6. All participants entering the competition must be
Australian residents.
7. Student entries are limited to University or Tafe
students currently enrolled in architecture or who
have not previously graduated in architecture,
design or similar course.
8. A combination of selected Boral Bricks, Masonry,
Roofing, and Timber products from the included
product sheet must be specified in all entries
submitted.
9. Employees and their immediate families of the
promoter and its agency associated with this
promotion are ineligible to enter.
10. Entry must be made according to the instructions
in the official entry pack. The winner will be
decided after 30 October 2009 and will be
published in The Australian newspaper on
21 November 2009.

11. The competition opens 10 June 2009 and
closes 30 October 2009. All submissions will be
assessed for accuracy, originality and creativity by
Boral Montoro Pty Ltd, trading under Boral (herein
after referred to as Boral). The judges’ decision is
final and no correspondence will be entered into.
12. The Professional Category prizes are first place:
$20,000 and second place: $10,000. Winners will
be notified by phone and email.
13. The Student Category prize is a cash prize of
$4,000. The winner will be notified by phone
and email.
14. Boral shall not be liable for any loss or damage
whatsoever suffered (including but not limited
to the indirect or consequential loss) or personal
injury suffered or sustained as a result of taking
part in the competition or winning the prize
except for any liability which cannot be excluded
by law.
15. Boral accepts no responsibility for incorrect or
mistaken attribution or accreditation of entries.
16. The promoter accepts no responsibility for late,
lost or misdirected submissions.
17. All entries will be entered into a database
and Boral may use the entrants’ names and
addresses for future promotional, marketing and
publicity purposes unless otherwise advised
by the entrant. Boral have the right to publish,
exhibit, photograph, archive, electronically store,

18. The entrant assigns to Boral all existing and
future intellectual property rights subsisting in
any material provided by the entrant to Boral in
connection with this competition. The entrant
warrants that it is the owner of the submitted
entry and that the entry does not infringe the
intellectual property rights of any third party.
The entrant acknowledges that all material
submitted will be deemed to be the original
work of the entrant.
19. Boral accepts no responsibility for any copyright
or other intellectual property infringements on the

20. If the winner of the prize is under the age of
18 years, the prize will be awarded to the
winner’s parent or guardian.

INSPIRED LIVING RESIDES IN THE DESIGN

Introduction
This is your invitation to bring your vision
to life in the Boral Design Award, which
celebrates and promotes innovative
concepts in realistic residential design.
For the first time, this national competition
has broadened its parameters so that
architects can specify from a range of
selected Boral products including bricks,
concrete pavers, retaining walls, roof tiles
and timber.
Clay, concrete, and timber are ubiquitous
building materials that contribute to
sustainability, with long lasting high
quality dwellings that are thermally and
acoustically sound.
The Boral Design Award is an opportunity
to embrace the individual benefits of
these materials, incorporating a lifecycle
approach to the design of a home and its
landscape.
The Brief
The competition opens on 10 June and the
deadline for all entries is 30 October 2009.
It is open to architects, building designers,
landscape designers and homebuilders.
There is also a student category, open to
all architectural or design students who
are enrolled at a University or Tafe. All
participants must be Australian residents.
Three prizes will be awarded from a
shortlist of finalists selected by the Awards
Jury in early November. In the Professional
Category, the first place winner will be
awarded $20,000 in cash, with second
place awarded $10,000 in cash. In the
Student Category, the winner will receive
$4,000 cash. All concepts will be presented
at an Awards evening in November.
The jury of esteemed industry
representatives includes Drew Heath from
Drew Heath Architects, James Russell
from James Russell Architects, Nick
Drougas from Stockland and is chaired
by Andrew Mackenzie, Editor-in-Chief of
Architectural Review magazine.
Design a new family home on a
standard suburban site (see site plan
overleaf), with a floor area of 150sqm.
Your design must include landscaping
and exterior detailing that responds to
the specific challenges of the site, such
as orientation, slope etc.
The design must also demonstrate
innovation in the use of selected Boral
products from the competition product
sheet, embracing their passive design
potential and product strengths.
Overall, the concept must demonstrate
a commitment to sustainability,
affordability and a reasonable
expectation of construction feasibility,
as might apply to a mid-range
residential market.
Finally, the design must explore creative
opportunities for a house that fully
embraces an indoor/outdoor lifestyle.
Judging Criteria
The competition aims to encourage real
buildable outcomes. All designs will be
assessed for:
1. Overall design innovation;
2. Commitment to sustainability;
3. Construction viability within a mid-range
residential market;
4. Creative use of Boral products (bricks,
concrete pavers, retaining walls, roof
tiles, and timber) selected from the
competition product sheet. Responses
must reflect the versatile capacity of
Boral products to create a modern
Australian home.
These criterias will be at the heart of
the jury’s deliberations and the jury will
assess each submission on its capacity
to respond coherently to all.
Entry Details
Category Prizes
Professional Category
First place winner will receive a cash prize
of $20,000. The winning project concept
will be published on the Boral website and
will be featured in Architectural Review
Australia magazine.
Second place winner will receive a cash
prize of $10,000. The project concept will
be published on the Boral website and in
Architectural Review Australia magazine.
Student Category
The winner will receive a cash prize
of $4,000. The project concept will be
published on the Boral website and in
Architectural Review Australia magazine.
Entrants in the student category must
meet the same submission requirements
as the professional entries, however will
only be competing against other students.
All student entrants will receive a free
12 month subscription to Architectural
Review Australia magazine.

Please follow these steps to enter your
written and visual submission:
Written Submission
In a Microsoft Word document, a written
statement to provide a theoretical
context to support your entry is required.
Please provide the following information,
with the answers to Questions 4-6 in no
more than 300 words:
1. Name of Design Practice or Institution
2. Contact telephone number and email
address
3. Project design team
4. What is the conceptual intention of
this design?
5. Please advise which products from
the Boral product sheet are specified
and how your design fully exploits the
benefits of these products.
6. As the objective for the competition
is to provide design possibilities that
are both innovative and practical, please
describe in detail the construction method
of your design, giving particular emphasis
to any unusual construction details.
You are legally required to ensure
that all relevant accreditation and
acknowledgements in connection to your
design entry are made.
Visual Submission
On a CD or DVD, please provide:
1. One PDF showcasing your design over
a series of up to 4 pages, including all
relevant details, diagrams and project
text (up to a maximum of 1000 words)
2. Separate image files of up to 5
physical models or 3D renders for
publication purposes in the event of
short listing. These must be supplied as
300dpi jpeg or TIFF files.
3. A hard copy of the supplied PDF file
printed on A4 sheets. Projects submitted
on larger than A4 sheets will not be
accepted.
