Count On To Add

Count on to add, 1st Grade, Math, 25-35 minutes

Introduction/Overview
This lesson helps to build the procedural skill of counting on to add. Pictures and number sentences are
used here because they support students' understanding of counting on through visuals and relationships
between numbers. This work develops students' understanding that we can use counting to add because
counting on from a number is the same as adding to a number. Students engage in Mathematical Practice
6 (Attend to precision) as they add two numbers using the counting on strategy accurately and efficiently
through a dice game.
Learning outcomes

Log on for computer is 5002607475 passcode is acmeron42 .This information is only if needed for answer
keys for: in class practice or additional practice) but there are copies on desk in labeled add on folder.
For the computer lab, the log on and passcode for 1st grade, Ms. Cameron’s class, is also in folder for add
on lesson plan. You will need 30 computers for each student to play games. If there is a shortage of
computers, the teacher may put the students into groups of two, and have them take turns.

The math games are intended to help reinforce the math concepts in the lesson. They are fun and colorful
games that will aid in understanding with the use of repetition.

Pre-activities
The teacher may briefly go over adding, and adding to. This subject matter has been covered for the last
few weeks.
Activities
Students will be assigned to groups of two. The first student will roll a die with numbers on it first.
Second, the same student will roll a die with dots on it. For example the first die will have a number four
on it; the second die will have 3 dots on it. The student will then count on from the first number 4, and
add the dots from the second die. The answer will be 7. The second student will record the information on
the in class practice sheets. The second student will record 4 under the first column, 3 in the second
column, with the answer being 7 in the 3rd column. Next the student that was recording the information
will now be rolling the die, and the student that was rolling the die, will now be recording the
information.
Assessment
Teacher will close the lesson by having the students read aloud the following instructions. We can count
on from a number to add two amounts together. We can use counting to add because counting on from a
number is the same as adding to a number.
