Background
The National Privacy Commission launched the Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) last May of
2018, as the biggest event for Data Protection officers in the country. The PAW is an initiative
started to promote and raise awareness on data privacy issues and to call on the importance of
protecting personal information. Due to the NPC’s effort, the President of the Republic declared
on July 3, 2018 Proclamation No. 527 declaring and institutionalizing an annual National Data
Privacy Awareness Week.
In its continuing effort to raise the awareness of Filipinos across the archipelago, the Commission
is bringing the Data Privacy Conference to Cebu city. The Commission recognizes that part of its
dynamic sectoral approach, it needs to achieve Maximum compliance in the regions. After 19
DPO Summits, 14 DPO Assemblies and 3 Regional Summits, the Commission aims to bring a
regional Conference to ensure comprehensive compliance across regions.
Rationale
Protecting the Filipino’s right to Data Privacy
The NPC recognizes that every Filipino benefit from the services offered by the Commission since
every Filipino is a valuable Data subject. As part of raising awareness to the importance of Data
Privacy the Commission aimed at training Data Protection Officers to deliver service that every
valuable Filipino data subject, deserves.
Building Data Privacy Resilience
The Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) endeavors to provide Data Protection Officers (DPO)
across different sector the necessary tools to enable them, capacitate them and train them to
comply with the Data Privacy Act (DPA). This capacity building and knowledge sharing to be
cascaded by the NPC together with a stellar line up of speakers will cover a wide array of topics
from the basic nuances to more advance concerns in Data Privacy.
Enabling the Filipino DPO
The program aims to create a comprehensive and advance approach in creating Data Privacy
resilience. In undertaking contemporary issues and approaches with a comprehensive discussion
of recent developments on the international laws on Data Privacy. The Commission aims to
provide the proper lenses in looking at the aspects and concepts of compliance by comparing the
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other Data Privacy rules. This recourse will be
expedient in providing a proper framework in approaching different realities operating across
diverse networks of data privacy compliance.
