Driving Historical Question

Why has the Holocaust had such a lasting impact on society’s memory?

Lesson Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Hook/Accessing Prior Knowledge) ‖ Time: 8

Minutes
Students will work with a partner to complete a K-W-L chart on the topic of The Holocaust.

Vocabulary (Content Language Development) ‖ Time: Accounted for in Lecture

The key terms listed here will be infused in the presentation used for the lecture. The key
terms will be introduced during their respective relevant points in the lecture, rather than
being listed off at the beginning of the presentation.

Key Terms: Holocaust, Kristallnacht, Auschwitz, Final Solution

Content Delivery (Method of Instruction) ‖ Time: 40 Minutes

Students will listen to, and engage, with a Prezi presentation which will accompany a
lecture given by the teacher. The lecture will be focused on the primary events which
involved unfair, inhumane treatment towards the Jewish people by the Nazi government.
The presentation will be embedded with pictures and a video to help illustrate the
information covered.

Student Engagement (Critical Thinking & Student Activities) ‖ Time: Accounted for in
Lecture
Students will be given guided notes which will assist them in keeping the plethora of
information organized. Questions will be embedded within the lecture which students will
answer within their notes; students will be asked to work together in order to keep them
engaged not only with the content, but, as well as each other.

Lesson Closure ‖ Time: 10 Minutes

Students will work with their partner to complete their K-W-L chart, and they will then
complete a QuickWrite in which they will explain the series of actions taken against the
Jewish people.

Assessments (Formative & Summative)

Formative Assessment: Students will be given a quiz following the completion of the lesson,
it will utilize multiple-choice and true-false questions to test students retention of the key
terms and major events of the Holocaust.

Summative Assessment: Upon completion of the unit, students will be required to create a
short movie which depicts the struggles of a minority group during WWII; the Jewish
people will be one of the options for this assessment.

Accommodations for English Learners, Striving Readers and Students with Special Needs
This entire lesson is designed in a way where students are receiving help through a
majority of the content and activities. In the opening activity, students are required to work
with a partner; this ensures students who need more individual help have someone who
can help introduce them to the material. The guided notes used for the lecture will let these
students know what to focus on while the lecture is going on. The only activity which will
require students to work individually would be the QuickWrite. However, these students
will have had plenty of assistance in understanding the material, so there should be a lower
likelihood of them needing help in accomplishing this specific task.

Resources (Books, Websites, Handouts, Materials)

The presentation would be made available online prior to teaching the lesson, the guided
notes and K-W-L chart would be returned shortly after grading them, the students will also
be reminded of the resources available on the class website.
