As a first military equipment deal between China and Malaysia, China started building four littoral
mission ships for Malaysian navy. According to Chinese military experts, China’s ships have advanced
command and weapon systems and thus more South Asian and African countries will buy Chinese

After the US state department announced that it would impose sanctions on the Equipment
Development Division of the Central Military Commission of China, China has urged United States to
immediately correct its wrongdoings and withdraw sanctions on Chinese military. The sanctions are
reported to be related to China’s purchase of SU-35 combat aircraft and S-400 missiles from Russia.
China feels that the US move has seriously breached the basic rules of international relations and

China delivered Y-8 mid-size transport aircraft to Kazakhstan, marking the first instance of Chinese
aircraft acquired by member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Y-8 transport aircraft

Kazakhstan increases China’s potential to enter the Middle East and African countries.

After Donald Trump signed Taiwan related National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA), Chinese
mainland official urged the US not to implement the act so as to avoid damaging US-China relations
and peace and stability in Taiwan strait. Various clauses such as directing a whole-of-government
strategy on China and assessing and planning on strengthening Taiwan’s force readiness. Taiwan
Affairs Office spokesperson said that this issue concerns China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In response to a new high school curriculum passed by Taiwan’s education authorities which makes
the Chinese history part of East Asian history, Chinese spokesperson made the remarks that
including Chinese history in East Asian history is a form of ‘Taiwan Independence’. China believes
that pushing ‘de-sinicization’ and ‘Taiwan independence’ in education will poison the younger
generation of Taiwan, further intensifying cross-strait confontrations.

Residents of Taiwan as well as Hong Kong and Macau will be allowed to apply for mainland
residential permits as per the resolution issued by the State Council Information Office. With this
permits residents will enjoy more rights, basic public services and other conveniences. It can be used
to register vehicles, apply for driver’s licence, take professional exams and check-ins in hotels.

This regulation is one of the efforts to ensure that people in Taiwan can share mainland’s
development opportunities and enjoy the same treatment as mainland residents.

According to Chinese mainland’s Taiwan Affairs chief, people aspire and wish for closer, better cross-
strait relations and that any attempts to obstruct and damage communication across the strait and
attempts to post for ‘Taiwan independence’ will hurt the fundamental interests on both sides. While
stating that mainland always takes care of needs of Taiwan he mentioned that the mainland coastal

use mainland students for espionage and spying purposes. These spies are basically used to serve
intelligence needs of Taiwan authorities. Chinese national security organ has warned Chinese people
against these Taiwan spies’ attempt to recruit mainland students. China also asked Taiwan
authorities to ensure the personal safety of students from mainland.

In a move that will consolidate Communist Party’s leadership, party’s Central Committee has revised
regulations on CPC disciplinary action. The revised regulations aim at strengthening the core status
of General Secretary Xi Jinping and the authority of CPC Central Committee. Most of the new clauses
are about punishments for corrupt behaviour and political indiscipline. Party members who behave
disloyally to the party, who spread political rumours can be expelled from the party according to the
new regulations. These revised regulations o disciplinary actions became effective on 1st October,
2018

CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission will hire
guest supervisors to oversee the work of anti-graft bodies at all levels. These supervisors will be
selected from members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative
Conference, personnel of central CPC and government organs, members of non-Communist parties,
people without party affiliation, and community-level representatives from all walks of life. The
guest supervisors are also supposed to submit opinions and suggestions to improve disciplinary
inspection and supervision work.

As a disciplinary measure China expelled two corrupt officials Wang Xiaoguang, former vice governor
of Ghizhou province and Zhang Shaochun, former vice minister of finance, from the CPC and

In another instance of corruption, Li Yanping, a former cashier from the Red Cross society was
charged with embezzlement of relief finds. She took advantage of her job to embezzle relief funds
worth up to 2.47 million Yuan and spent them for private use.
