Figure Me Out!

Grade: 3rd

Subject: Math

Length of Lesson: 2 Hours

Lesson Overview/Rationale:
Students will understand the concept of multiplying and dividing to figure out problems to learn
about their partner. Students will work in groups of 2.

Curriculum Framework/Standard:
“Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal
groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol
for the unknown number to represent the problem.” Page 25.

Learning Objectives:
 Students will be able to multiply two numbers to get a solution.
 Students will be able to divide two numbers to get a solution.
 Students will learn a little more about their partner.
Technology Uses:
 Projector/ Promethean Board

Materials:
 Poster Board
 Markers
 Sticky Notes
 Pencil
 Paper
Procedure:
1. Teacher will present example figure me out poster over promethean board to class.
2. Students will then think of 10 questions about themselves they have number problems to
solve, ex. My age, my shoe size, my birth month, my birthdate, etc.
3. Then students will write the questions and problems on a sheet of paper.
4. Will show teacher to make sure the problem line up with their answers.
5. Students will then get poster board, markers, and sticky notes.

6. Then they will write the questions on the poster board and the answer under the question,
and then write the problem on the sticky note and place on top of answer.
7. Students will then draw a picture of themselves using the markers.
8. Then they will get in groups of two and solve their partner’s questions, and present their
partners to their class.
9. Each person will solve for their partners answer and write them on a sheet of paper, then
they write two new things they learned about their partner that they know already.

Assessment:
 I will check if students were able to choose two numbers that equaled their answer when
they come and show the teacher.
 Each student will turn in a paper of their partners name questions and how they solved to
get to the answer.
 Students will present to the class about their partner.
