How should I start my signs?

Grade(s): 1-2

Subject(s): Language Arts, World Language

Length of Lesson: 5- 30 Minute Sessions

Lesson Overview/Rationale:

Students will have an understanding about the ALS community and how to communicate the basics of
ALS. Work in groups to help and encourage their peers in there group.

Learning Objectives:

· Students will be able to identify and demonstrate how to sign the ABC’s and numbers 0-10.

· Students will have an understanding of basic words such as please, thank you, more, eat, drink,
sorry, and bathroom.

· Students will have the understanding of facial expressions when signing basic words in the ALS
Community.
Technology Uses:

· Youtube Video

· Slide Show

Materials:

1. Pictures of the basic words

2. Pictures of expressions

3. Felt material with numbers

4. Plastic container

5. Dry erase board and dry erase markers

6. Pictures of ABC signs

Procedure:

1. Students will get into groups of three

2. Each group will have a unique set of images

3. Each group will review their images and match pictures of basic words to the correlating
expressions

4. Student one will quiz student two and three to determine understanding

5. Students will rotate and take turns quizzing each other

6. Then each group will take turns pulling numbers out of a container numbers written on material
and practicing their signs for the numbers.

7. Then each group will match pictures that start with the first letter of the alphabet to the
correlating ABC sign on dry erase board.

Assessment:

Teacher will watch each group to make sure students understand, can identify, and demonstrate
counting 0-10, ABC’s, and basic words such as please, thank you, more, eat, drink, sorry, and bathroom.
Teacher will keep track with check marks in separate columns for areas of understanding, identify, and
demonstration.
