T
he Match That’s Made was originally published by William Byrd in Psalms,
Sonnets and Songs of Sadness and Pietie in 1588. The lyrics of this madrigal
or choral work pertain to marriage, but reflect the customs of a very
different era. Historically The Match That’s Made would have been an arranged
marriage with the ultimate goal of increasing the wealth of both families.
The reader will notice that there is a lack of time signature in this arrangement.
This was a deliberate action on the part of the arranger. Music from the time
of the Renaissance held no time signature as every part held it’s own individual
melody line resulting in a polyphony unmatched by modern composers. The
Stanzas roughly works out to common 3 or 3/2. The chorus, which is in Latin
roughly works out to 9/4. However, it holds an inconsistent number of beats
varying between nine, eight and seven. This song should be performed at a mod-
erately slow tempo.
If you are interested in receiving all of the systems broken down by part,
feel free to contact the arranger through the contact form in the website,

Where Plenty wants there Love will wear away.
