UNESCO’s Earth Science Education Initiative in Africa

Strengthening capacity in geological mapping training through African Network of Earth Science Institutions
(ANESI)
Call for application

In the framework of the Earth Science Education Initiative in Africa, UNESCO has facilitated the setting
up of the African Network of Earth Science Institutions (ANESI) to promote high quality research and
training. Enhancing the capacity in Earth science training is one of the core activities of ANESI. The
programme is funded in the general framework of 2014-2017 Programme Cooperation Agreement
between UNESCO and the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida).

It is a well-established fact that African universities are poorly equipped for field and laboratory
geological mapping teaching. This was highlighted by UNESCO during a review of Earth science training
in Africa, review that led to the UNESCO’s Earth Science Education Initiative in Africa. There is a shortage
of skills in geological mapping on a continent specially endowed with huge potential in mineral
resources as highlighted by the African Mining Vision. In view of supporting the efforts of institutions,
UNESCO is looking for an institution to host a pilot experience to enhance training capacity in geological
mapping practices.

Target
Earth science departments from countries with 2015 lowest Human Development Index, especially
Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic Democratic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia,
Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Sierra Leone.

Focus
To promote a conducive environment for geological mapping practices (for example refurbish facilities,
supporting field works, upgrade hardware (computers, GPS) training on digitalization of maps…))

Application
Each institution willing to participate to this call must submit an application comprising:
1. A detailed proposal, including actions to be undertaken and how they will contribute to improve the
teaching;
2. An estimate cost of the project;
3. A letter of endorsement by the dean of the related faculty.

Level of funding
A maximum of 13,000 USD will be available for the project.

Deadline
All applications should reach in UNESCO Nairobi before 30 September 2016.

Selection
The selection will be on a competitive basis. To that end, an international committee will be set up by
UNESCO. Priority will be given to those institutions having provision of funds for the same activity and
having expressed interest to join ANESI.
