The documentary opens with the tile card followed

by a few lines of information, a mix between facts
and statements to do with editing and what I will
be covering in this film
In this Documentary, I plan to answer one thing.
Why is editing so important to Film? Now, Before I With a black background, in plain text put up the
answer this we need to understand how this all question, so the audience understand what the
came to be and how it has evolved as an industry. documentary is about.

December 28th 1895. It all started in the Basement Show an image of the grand cafe
of the Grand Café, the Lumiere Brothers organised Show image of Lumiere Brothers
a screening for the first ever film. The name of the
film is called ‘Leaving the Lumiere Factory’. -Show a section of ‘Leaving the Lumiere Factory’-
Especially for us modern film viewers this is
nothing special, in fact it’s just a video of people
leaving a factory, but back then, this was
revolutionary and is what started the film industry
itself. Although the Lumiere Brothers started this,
there was someone in the audience who would
change the industry and actually invent the art of
Film Editing. That person was Georges Melies, at Show image of Georges Melies
the time Georges was a magician, but after seeing
this show, he was inspired to create films of his
own. Georges actually tried to purchase a Show image of a cinematograph
Cinematographe from the Lumiere Brothers, but
they saw him as competition, so they refused. This
wouldn’t hold back Melies though, as he ended up
buying an Animatograph for a lot cheaper than he Show Melies Animatograph
was requesting to purchase for the
Cinematographe. Melies had a mechanic
background, so he was actually able to craft his
own camera from the Animatograph. In the
autumn of 1896 Melies was filming a bus when his Show a bus with someone taking a video and it
camera suddenly jammed. By the time he actually jamming and being replaced by a car
fixed the camera, the bus was long gone, and a car
ended up taking the buses place. When he
processed the film he saw that it jumped from the
bus to the car, which in turn was the creation of
the first ever piece of edited film. Melies carried on -Show clip of Melies using editing to make
using this technique in his film, usually to create a someone disappear-
magic trick, making someone disappear and
reappear. In Melies run, he invented three iconic
effects that are still used today; Fade, Overlapping List of the three techniques he invented (possible
Dissolves and Stop Motion Photography. Melies is clip example of each)
definitely one of the most important people in the
industry and is the person who invented the idea
of video editing. Across the Atlantic we were
introduced to Edwin S. Porter, the person who Show image of Edwin porter
helped create the first Edison projector the Show image of projector
Vitascope. He worked in this industry until the
early 1900’s at which he decided to join the Edison
Production Company. He was appointed the go-to
Cameraman or Director due to the vast knowledge
he had in the field. Porter decided that he would
make his very own narrative production what was -Show extract from ‘The life of a Fireman’-
later titled ‘The life of an American Fireman’. This
production was created in 1903 and was created
by Compiling staged scenes and Stock footage -Show extract of the stock footage used-
together to create an interesting narrative for the
audience. One of Porters most important films ‘The -Show extract of ‘Great Train Robbery’-
Great Train Robbery’ which is the movie that
pushed the idea of a narrative based film further
and truly help mould film production to where it is
now. This movies importance to editing is very
substantial as he created film without using the
most common edits such as fades and dissolves
and that editing can be used to compress time to
go through a longer story with more content. In Show image of D.W. Griffith
1908 porter hired an Actor by the name of D.W -Show extract of ‘Rescued from an eagle’-
Griffith for the film ‘Rescued from an Eagle’. After
this Griffith started to instead write scenarios for
Porter under the name Lawrence Griffith. Griffith
eventually found work at a failing company called Show image of biograph
Biograph. They needed a Director and Griffith was
more than happy to fill the role. This job was quite
important for Griffith and the evolution of Film as
he ended up making more than 450 Films in his run
from 1908-1911. The reason he is so important is
because he created a lot of the modern techniques
used today but one of his most important
techniques that he invented, is ‘continuous
editing’. This effectively means that your edit
creates a sense of time throughout the film that
the audience can understand. He invented a few
more things which were quite important such as Show Cut in and 180 degree rule
the ‘Cut in’ and the ‘180 Degree rule’ which has
changed the way create and edit films. Griffith then
left Biograph so that he could create his own
independent film. This film was very important in
the timeline of editing as this film was a
culmination of all of the editing techniques Griffith
had invented incorporated to make a revolutionary
film. The film was called ‘Birth of a Nation’. It was a -Show extract of ‘Birth of a Nation’-
huge hit, but had a lot of backlash. The story was
seen as racist and was actually banned in a few
countries. Griffith didn’t make the subject any
better as he took offence as he thought people
were attacking him. Although it was a monumental
film, this was the beginning of the end of his
career, the backlash he got from this was too
severe.

Now, It’s many peoples understanding that Editing

is the most important part of a film. To me I feel
that editing is the glue that holds a film together, if
the editing is weak, the production will fall apart,
but if it is done carefully, efficiently and
successfully it will serve the purpose it’s meant to
and will overall be a strong production.

[ INTRODUCE EVERYBODY I AM INTERVIEWING

WITH THEM SAYING THEIR NAME AND
OCCUPATION (q1) AND HOW THEY GOT TO WHERE
THEY ARE NOW (q2) ]
-Show Star Wars introduction-
To really understand and know why Editing is so
important we would need evidence for something
that deals with this, Take Star Wars for example.
Star Wars is one of the biggest film franchises in Show an image of new articles talking about star
the world and is a revolutionary film, But, what a wars being saved by editors
lot of people do not know, is that star wars was
quote on quote ‘saved’ by the editors. As you can Show images of Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew and
see here, this is a few of the original scenes from Marcia Lucas
Star Wars.
It looks and sounds completely different from what
you remember. That’s because, thanks to Paul Show image of darth vader
Hirsch, Richard Chew and Marcia Lucas the film
was completely changed in Post Production. One of
the biggest changes, which was probably one of
the best changes, was Darth Vader’s voice.
Originally acted and voiced by David Prowse, Darth -Show extract of Darth Vader’s voice before with
Vader did not sound threatening or evil, if anything david prowses voice-
hysterical. It was in Post Production that these
editors thought that the best move was to re cast
the voice.

That’s where the infamous voice for Darth Vader

arrived in the form of James Earl Jones. Another
voice you probably didn’t expect, was Chewbacca’s -Show extract of Chewbacca speaking-
voice. As seen in this footage it was shown that
Chewie actually spoke to the others rather than
using his usual growl.

This again is something that had an astounding

effect once changed and was definitely something Show image of John Jympson
that improved this film. Now talking about these
three saving Star Wars would probably make you
believe that they were the first to edit the film,
which is false. John Jympson was the first tasked Show images of news saying it was a disaster
with editing the film. Due to the fact that he
received the footage so late into production, he did Show the three people with crowns on their heads
not have a lot of time to actually edit the film. They
screened the film to a few people, and it turned
out to be a ‘disaster’, Jympson was fired and it was
then that Paul, Richard and Marcia where hired,
and later, saved the film.

Something that especially is more prominent in

modern times, is the variety of fields that Editing
can apply in. This could range from a Major Motion -Show clips of music videos, documentaries and
Picture to a Music Video or in my current case, a films-
Documentary. Due to the evolution of the industry,
the style of editing actually varies to define the
type of Production you are trying to create.
[SHOW interviewees responses to Question 3]

There has been a rise of popularity in this industry,

and because of that I want to understand more
about people in the industry and what got them to
their respective places. A key reason that film
making is so important to modern day society is
due to its creativeness. Now something that comes
from this urge to create is inspiration. I want to
understand what it was that actually inspired these
people who spend the majority of their time doing
Editing.
[Show responses to Question 4]

Now in the Film Industry there has been a number

of people who have made significant advances
through history to get film editing to where it is
now. I want to understand what films changed the
progression of editing and how they did it. The first
film that sparked the idea of video editing is 'Come -Show extract of ‘come along do’-
along, do!' the 1898 film created by Robert W.
Paul. This film was the first ever film to incorporate
more than one cut. Now although that sounds like
nothing, back then this technique was truly
revolutionary and proved to people the potential
of film production through editing. The film itself,
especially for the modern viewer does not have an
astounding appeal or intrigue but in 1898 this was
seen as something that could change the whole
entertainment industry itself. This simple cut was
the starting point of all the marvels we see in
modern times. 'Life of an American Fireman' was a -Show extract of ‘Life of an American Fireman’-
film created by Edwin Porter in 1903. Now I have
already talked about Edwin Porter and this film, Show Edwin Porter
but I needed to include him to this list as he is
someone who pushed the industry further and
created some of the techniques we use today. The
way the film was created alone is something that
proved to the world the endless limitations the
platform has. Porter created this film by splicing -Show extracts of transition from Staged to Stock
together both staged scenes and real life stock footage-
footage to create a narrative. This film opened the
world to the idea of random shots compiling
together to show a story. Speaking of this, another
of Edwin S. Porter’s films that is known for pushing -Show extract of ‘great train robbery’-
forward the idea of a narrative is 'The Great Train
Robbery'. This was one of his earlier films, but was
probably one of his most important films. This film
is the film that really pushed the idea of a narrative
story in a film. This film was created to really
portray a story through a collection of different
videos that could portray emotion for the
audience. This changed the way film creators
thought about creating films, and the new
possibilities that arose. It changed the way that
Productions were filmed and cut together to
portray the story in the correct way manner for the
audience to understand. D.W. Griffith was a very
important part of the evolution of the film
industry. I think his most important piece of work
and his most iconic piece of work was the film 'The -Show extract from ‘Birth of A Nation’-
Birth of a Nation'. This film was created in 1915
and was Griffith’s first independent film. In this film
he incorporated every single one of the techniques
he had invented which are still used to this day.
This film truly showed the world the capability of
the film industry, and showed the world how far it
had progressed in less than 20 years. The reason
this film was also very iconic is due to the content.
The content shown was quite racist and many
places even decided to ban people from watching
it. This showed the world and the industry the
importance of the story in a film, and the
limitations that come with it. Although it wasn’t a
good story to portray, it still showed how the film
industry had evolved from just showing a moving
picture, to an interesting story that needs to be
pieced together to portray the right message to the
audience. The 1976 sequel to 'Westworld',
‘Futureworld’ was a very iconic film. The reason it -show extract from ‘futureworld’-
was so iconic and important to the evolution of
film making is because it was the first ever film to
use 3D visual effects. This showed that the film -Show use of 3D visual effects-
industry was evolving and reaching new heights.
The prequel to this film, 'Westworld' was also quite
important because it was one of the first films to -show extract of westworld-
use 2D visual effects in a films, which inspired the
creation of 3D visual effects in ‘Futureworld’. This
film showed the amazing improvement of film and
the new things we could do since the creation of
digital editing. Last but definitely not least is James -show extract of ‘avatar’-
Cameron's 'Avatar' film. It is truly one of, if not, the
most important and revolutionary films of all time.
This was the first film to ever use motion capture
to create the movement and actions for CGI – -show clip of mo cap-
digitally created characters through the actors
themselves. The film itself was an absolute marvel,
and to this day is one of the most recognised and
respected films ever created. The film itself broke a
numerous amount of records, one of which was
the first film to gross more than $2 Billion, and to
this day is still the highest grossing film of all time.
This film proved to the world the endless amount
of creative freedom that can be harnessed and
portrayed through a film, welcoming the new wave
of technology. This film compared the first ever cut
film, which was 111 years prior, shows how films -show comparison of first ever film and avatar-
and editing itself has evolved into a beautiful
platform that can create the impossible. The
thought of a creation like this all originating from
someone getting two different shots and splicing
them together is truly jarring. The industry has
progressed so far, and has so much room to evolve.
