I’m sending you this long email with an update
on the e‐companion component of this course. As some of you may be aware, the Pearson
eCollege tool that Finlandia currently uses to manage online, online‐blended, and e‐companion
courses (basically any course with a web component) is in the process of being discontinued.
The university is in the process of finding another tool to support its electronic course
components (e.g., online syllabi, course schedules, discussion forums, assignment drop boxes,
etc.). As a new faculty member, I felt that it would be relatively pointless to devote my efforts
to creating electronic course components for a system that is being phased out and have
instead opted to use Schoology, which is one of the new candidate tools that Finlandia is
considering migrating its electronic course components to. Just as an FYI, Prof. Jillian Stuart, the
other new psychology faculty member has also opted to use Schoology for her online course
components.
**PLEASE NOTE** All of the online course components for my courses will be posted on the
applicable Schoology course website. This will include announcements, readings,
assignments, etc. (anything that would previously have been housed on an eCollege course
website).
There will be a learning curve for all of us as we adjust to the particulars of the Schoology
system. A first step in getting started is for all students to sign‐up for a free Schoology Student
account and then go through the process of adding the relevant courses to their schedule.
Detailed instructions on the process of signing up for an account, logging in, and joining courses
can be found at the Schoology website under support and students and can be accessed from
this link.
