〔Application method and screening〕 〔How to read the chart〕

(1) Confirmation of qualifications * “Qualifier”

Ⅲ .Scholarships by Local Governments and International Associations

Please read the application qualifications given in the list carefully and confirm which
scholarship you are qualified to apply for.
(2) Application forms
When submitting an application, first of all inquire at the local government foundation or
your school and obtain the necessary documents (please read the list carefully to confirm
where inquiries should be made and beware not to make a mistake).
(3) Filling in the application forms
Fill in the necessary items in the application forms, gather the necessary documents as
required (ex. personal history, school attendance certificate, a recommendation from your
teacher, a health certificate, photographs, a copy of your alien registration certificate, etc.),
and submit them to the foundation or your school.
(4) Screening test
Screening takes place in a variety of ways - on the basis of documents alone, a written
test (general education, special subject knowledge, Japanese-language ability, etc.) or
inter views. In the inter views, consideration is also given to character and ability to
contribute to cultural exchange between Japan and the applicant's country or region.
(5) Screening results
Applicants are notified of the results of screening either directly by the foundation or
through their school.
The academic level of grantees are indicated.
－ UJ: University Japanese Programs - refers to the "Preparatory Japanese language
programs" established by private universities and junior colleges（"College Student" visa
status）.
－ JL: Japanese Language Institutes- refers to Japanese language institutes other than the
above.
* “Plural Grants and Limits”
Foundations that allow their grants to overlap with other funding are marked in this
column with " Ｙ ." In cases when limits are imposed on scholarships received from
other sources, the maximum funding permitted is listed.
* “Reapplication”
Cases when a recipient from the previous year is permitted to reapply are marked with "
Ｙ ."
* “Duration”
Cases when it is possible to extend the scholarship duration are marked with " Ｙ ."
* “Selection”
The ways of selection are indicated in the parenthesis.
