Dr. Tony La Viña is a teacher, thinker, and lawyer. He
is currently Dean of the Ateneo School of Government, taking this position in 2006 when he returned to the Philippines after an eight year stint in a Washington DC environmental think tank, the World Resources Institute (WRI). From 1996-1998, Dean Tony was an Undersecretary at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Before that, he co-founded the Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center, a leading human rights and environmental organization. Dean Tony obtained his Masters (LLM) and Doctorate in Law (JSD) from Yale Law School and his first degrees from the University of the Philippines (in law) and the Ateneo de Manila University (in philosophy). He placed third in the 1989 bar examinations.
Dean Tony is a professor of the Philippine Judicial Academy, a member of
its Constitutional Law department. He teaches Constitutional law, Administrative Law, Local Government and Environmental Law in the University of the Philippines College of Law and Theory of Law and International Environmental Litigation at the Ateneo Law School. He also teaches courses in the Environmental Science, Political Science and Philosophy Departments in the Loyola Schools of the Ateneo de Manila University. He has authored many books, research monographs and journal articles and these have been published widely in the Philippines and internationally.
