A teacher (also called a school teacher or, in some contexts, an educator) is a

person who helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or values. Informally the
role of teacher may be taken on by anyone (e.g. when showing a colleague how to

perform a specific task). In some countries, teaching young people of school age may be
carried out in an informal setting, such as within the family (homeschooling), rather than
in a formal setting such as a school or college. Some other professions may involve a
significant amount of teaching (e.g. youth worker, pastor). In most
countries, formal teaching of students is usually carried out by paid professional teachers.
This article focuses on those who are employed, as their main role, to teach others in
a formal education context, such as at a school or other place of initial formal education
or training. What is importance of teacher in student? What is the most important value of
a teacher? what the teachers doing in our community?

Teachers play a vital role in the education and also student’s life.

A person with proper vision, experience, and an education degree can enter the teaching
profession.

Teaching job is a more of a responsibility than a mere job.

It has an impact on the growth and well-being of the nation.

The teacher today is quite diverse than past and has an extensive role in almost every
occupation.

In many cases of a successful student, there seems to be a good teacher. The relation in
between seems to be very harmonious with complete dedication and affection from the
teacher towards the student. This phenomenon had never been the other way.
2

A teacher plays an important role after parents in molding the students. Students are to be
handled with affection and courtesy.

Students generally keep a watch on the teacher’s life. So, a teacher has to maintain a good
set of manners and try to be a role model.

This not only helps students adopt it but also improves their respect and regards to the
teacher.

Teachers should encourage student welfare program, sports, tutoring, etc. during regular
school days.

Even education trips are to be included in the school life of the children.

It is common that children try to imitate their teachers out of inspiration from them.

Hence, the teacher should try to balance his mindset by not showing fear, anxiety,
overexcitement. He must maintain his coolness and be of the composed mind.

The student’s point of view must always be considered once before teacher applies his
opinion on them.

In case, the parents of any students willing to meet, the teacher must be ready to listen
and cooperate with them.

This implies that one should play the role of a teacher with dedication, honesty, affection,
and patience.

The phrase “The relationship between a teacher and student should be like a fish and
water but not like a fish and fisherman.” is to be considered once by every teacher.

Give respect and take respect is a practice in the society… But in a student and teacher’s
relation, it changes to “give affection & attention and take respect and regards from the
student.” 1

Students are the reflections of a teacher. The way teacher acts, behaves, talks, everything
is followed by his/her student. So, it is very necessary for a teacher to be mindful about
his/her actions. There are some values teacher should always possess. Upon possessing
these values both inside and outside classroom, he/she shall find the students getting in
proper path and eventually producing better results. After all, it's result that determines a
teacher’s success. Result might not be only in terms of marks but a student’s overall
performance does determine degree of the success of a teacher. Moreover, teachers
3

should also understand that they aren't only content tutors but are also leaders. They
guide students and show them the path for better future.

Here are 5 Core Values that shall help a teacher in being an outstanding leader in a
classroom.

1. Integrity
It's necessary for a teacher to be honest with his/her job role and responsibility. Students
always follow what teacher does and reflect on them. Teachers should be careful about
what he or she does and also make sure of fulfilling commitments he/she makes. Once a
student finds teacher not sticking to his/her words then the student shall also start
ignoring the teacher. Pretending to know everything might not be a good idea for
teachers. Teachers could be doing so to make sure students always follow him/her but
should there be any confusion to teacher himself/herself, he/she should have integrity to
explain the situation. The teacher can tell the student that he/she will get back with the
solution.

2. Sense of Hope For Students

Teachers should always possess a sense of hope that their students can do better. Some
students could be weak and might not be able to catch up along with the pace. It's a major
responsibility for a teacher to always stick with the possibility of those students
progressing in their academics and in their life as well. All students don't have the same
capacity of learning. They have different learning styles so, teachers should exercise
different ways of explaining core concepts and have confidence in their students instead
of giving up on them.

3. Sense of Urgency
If something's to be done, just go for it with feeling and sense of urgency. Don't just wait
or linger as time is valuable and students invest a lot of time expecting to learn something
meaningful and important and you can't just procrastinate. The more you linger, you shall
find yourself with little time in the days to come for your lesson plans, objectives and you
4

could struggle in meeting academic as well as non-academic goals you set for your
students.

4. Continuous Self-Learning
If you are thinking, teachers are meant to teach to students then you are missing
something. Teachers aren't just to teach but they are in continuous process of learning
too. Should they stop learning themselves, their teaching turns dull. The world advances
with technology, knowledge steadily and it is responsibility of a teacher to stay updated
in order to prepare student for all the upcoming changes in the society and world.
Moreover, teachers should be accountable in learning from students as well. Classroom is
a mini-society itself and teacher can also learn a lot of things about different culture and
beliefs in a classroom from students.

5. Mutual Respect and Responsibility

Students aren't the only ones accountable to exhibit respect. Teachers also need to have
respect and responsibility towards students. In fact, a teacher who doesn't respect his/her
students cannot earn their respect. Teachers should always feel the responsibility towards
students. Parents, society as well as the children invest having faith in teachers and
should teacher be willing to get rid of the responsibility, the whole learning and teaching
process turns meaningless. Teachers are responsible in overall development of society via
the education he/she passes to students to build educated, capable manpower.

Upon possessing and exhibiting these core values, teachers shall be able to appear as a
better leader, facilitator and educator. 2

Great teachers do it all. Across all ages, languages, ethnicities, and subjects, teachers
are some of the most widely skilled people around in order to be successful. A day in the
life of a teacher can vary greatly depending on the subject and grade level in which they
teach. From Kindergarten to high school and special education to statistics, one theme
runs consistently throughout every great teacher’s career: their job does not end with the
school day. Although standing in front of the classroom is a huge part of a teacher’s
responsibilities, they extend far beyond that into the lives of their students, their students’
families and their community.
5

Teachers are in a unique position to have a direct impact on their students. Teachers can
see their work in action, see the changes they affect, and in so doing they witness
firsthand their goals coming to fruition. No matter what the goals are, they can pretty
much be summed into a single sentence: You want to help people. And there are many
ways you can help someone as a teacher. To name a few, teachers aspire to educate, to
inspire, to learn and to affect positive change.

Educate

A great teacher should love educating students, and one of the principal goals many
teachers set for themselves is to be the best educator they can be. There is something
extremely gratifying about imparting information to your students and working with them
to ensure they understand, not only concepts, but practical applications as well. There are
different methods you can use to teach, and while your teaching style is unique to you,
the most important thing is that you engage, motivate and inspire students to learn. Many
people teach out of a passion for their subject. If you truly love a particular topic, you
may have a desire to share that knowledge with others indeed, that passion can make you
excel at it! Other people teach out of a concern for some of the issues facing the
education system and because they want to be a part of the solution. Whatever the reason,
a teacher can do nothing if not educate their students, so many teachers set this at the
forefront of their goals: impart lessons that will last a lifetime.

Inspire

Teachers seek to inspire students in all aspects of their lives, and for many teachers, their
greatest goal is to be a role model. A role model is someone who inspires and encourages
students to strive for greatness, and teaches them through experience and commitment
how to realize their full potential to become the best they can be. Teachers can inspire an
uninterested student to become engrossed in learning. They can motivate them to
participate and focus, and even bring introverted students out of their shells. A great
teacher can get students reading, inspire a passion for languages, make math or science
fun, and turn history lessons into fun and exciting stories. For many teachers, one of their
simplest goals is to inspire their students to love learning. But the inspirational power of a
teacher can transcend the classroom. So often, we hear people say that they were inspired
to pursue their careers because of their teachers. A great teacher can leave an indelible
mark that lasts a lifetime, and for many of us, some of our most important decisions were
inspired by our teachers.

Learn

Teaching is one of those careers where you learn something new every day, and many
educators cite this as one of the main things they hope to get out of their career.
6

On a strictly professional level, the education you attain to become a teacher opens your
eyes to many things you may never have been exposed to before. Pursuing a degree in
education teaches you so much about learning itself: pedagogy, methodology, etc. You
learn how people learn and how to best teach students. Additionally, so many other
elements go into teaching that the process of becoming an educator in itself teaches you a
great deal. No matter what you teach, your knowledge in many fields will deepen and
expand. Then there’s the question of the teacher credentialing process which is also a
learning experience.

Teachers also learn a great deal about themselves through teaching. Teaching requires
you to step out of yourself in a way you may have never done before, and
through this you learn about yourself as a teacher and as a person. You may learn more
about how you work with others, particularly with children, and better understand how to
communicate effectively and teach efficiently. You can learn how to better handle stress,
and the organizational skills you’ll gain from planning lessons and grading assignments
will be invaluable. Furthermore, many teachers say the lessons they learn from their own
students are the ones that make the job so fulfilling. Students bring a lot of their own life
experiences to the classroom, and some of the things they have to say will enlighten you
in ways you might not expect. Hearing your students out when they want to voice their
opinions can broaden your perspective.

Change

Ambitious teachers are the ones who enter this career to affect change. These are the ones
who want to meet the demand for great teachers: They make it their goal to help improve
the quality of education for everyone. These teachers are willing to work in high needs
schools, where there is low teacher retention and impoverished communities desperate
for committed, talented teachers.

Very ambitious teachers take it a step further. As described in our “Benefits of a

Master’s” page, having a Master’s in Education or another advanced degree increases a
teacher’s career prospects. Teachers with advanced degrees (Master’s, Doctorate, etc.)
are eligible for more promotions and many go into the field with the intention of
becoming a principal or school administrator. You can even end up working for your
district or state’s board of education. At this level, you can effect real change by helping
shape the future of education in your area.

When a teacher says their goal is to "make a difference", this is what they mean. They not
only want to change the lives of their students, they want to change the face of
education.3
