Questions 1-8 are based on the following passage.

Cordyceps sinensis is one of the most valued of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. It is also
known as Dong Chong Xiao Cao or “winter worm, summer plant”. The reason for this is
because long ago, its medicinal property was thought to come from a worm that lived inside
this plant. In recent years, scientists have discovered that cordyceps is actually a type of
fungus.
For over a thousand years, Chinese medicinal practitioners have used cordyceps as an
effective tonic for several health complaints. It is said to help strengthen the body, improve
organ functions, build up body resistance and promote a long and healthy life. It was also
prescribed for the treatment of asthma, weak lungs, shortness of breath and other related
health problems.
Research has shown that this fungus can lower the LDL “bad” cholesterol level while
increasing the HDL “good” cholesterol level. It also helps to “thin” the blood to prevent
plaque or clot formation that may block blood vessels. In this way, it helps reduce the risk of
cardiovascular problems such as heart attack and stroke.
The benefits of cordyceps were first discovered 1500 years ago in the mountains of Tibet.
Cowherds in these mountains noticed that their cattle became more energetic after eating
this tiny grass-like herb. However, it only received international fame after a group of
Chinese athletes broke world records in the 1993 World Outdoor Track and Field
Championships in Germany. Their coach said that their achievement was due to the use of
