WIRELINE TOOL STRING

The Wireline Tool String as an assembly of wireline tools connected to the

wireline (slickline) for setting, pulling, or servicing downhole equipment. An
assembly of wireline tools is used to deliver surface controlled impacts (jar
action) to manipulate devices within the well bore.

A standard set of wireline tools typically consists of:

• Wireline Socket (Rope socket) provides a means for connecting the wireline to
the tool string.
• Wireline Stem (Sinker bar) is used as weight to overcome well pressure, fluids,
and friction to sink the tools into the well bore. Stem is also used to transmit
force either upward or downward to set or retrieve downhole controls.
• Wireline Knuckle Joint is used for flexibility through the tool string.
• Wireline Jars (Spang type link jars) used for obtaining a hammering effect by
upward or downward movement.
• Wireline running tool, pulling tool, or other service tool required to perform
services desired.

Tool strings are available in various sizes that are designed by nominal
dimensions rather than tubing sizes.

ACCELERATOR
Purpose
Designed to intensify the jarring action and cushion the force on the rope socket.

Operation
Run in tool string directly below the rope socket when jarring up. The spring is collapsed and when the
hydraulic jars fire, the spring tension is released, accelerating the tool string upwards at a much higher
rate of speed.
This keeps the energy of the jarring force in the tool string and lessens the force on the line and rope
socket.

Precautions
Do not place vice jaws or pipe wrenches on the barrel where it can be crushed. Remove Cap Head
Screws before attempting disassembly. Check for cracks or damaged parts when servicing.

ANTI BLOW UP TOOL

Anti Blow Up Tool is a wireline service tool designed to be used as part of the tool string when downhole
instruments are to be deployed in to a multi zone completion well.
Anti Blow Up Tool will help to prevent a tool string being blown up the production string if the flow rates
between zones should try to push the tool string upwards.
Anti Blow Up Tool has been designed so that if the lower part of the tool string starts to lift, two arms are
thrown outward to lock into the tubing wall, stopping any further upward movement. To release the arms,
once engaged, you simply pick up on the wireline which lifts the upper body of the tool and closes the arms,
releasing the tool string.
Anti Blow Up Tool is available to suit all tubing sizes from 2-3/8" through to 5-1/2".

BLIND BOX
Purpose
Used to deliver downward jarring blows.

Description
For heavy downward jarring to move obstructions downhole, add sufficient stem weight.
Choose the correct blind box O.D. to cover the area of obstruction, ensuring the blind box is not too large to
pass any restrictions that maybe encountered.
When the blind box is ran on the end of a tool string to cut wire from a rope socket of lost wire and tools be
sure the O.D. of the blind box will be sufficient.

CENTRALIZER

Purpose
To centralize the tool string in large diameter tubing and casings.

Application
Generally ran just above the pulling tool, but some applications may require
multiple Centralizers higher in the tool string.

Precautions
After each use, inspect bow springs for cracks and wear. The mandrels are
much lighter than full size tool string, so excessive jarring should be avoided.
Running through profile nipples will score the seal bore, thus damaging the
nipple and plugs will not seal

HYDRAULIC TUBING PUNCH

Purpose
To provide a means of achieving well communication between annulus and
tubing.

Operation
Assemble the Components of the Hydraulic Tubing Punch and attach to the
tool string. Once attached to the tool string, release safety sleeve, and lower
into the wellbore to desired depth, set down on a pre run collar stop or other
firm base. Jar down to shear the shear pin and detonate the charge.
The punch is forced through the tubing wall when the firing shell is
detonated, gas pressure build up above the piston forces the piston down
which displaces the oil in the oil chamber to the punch housing. The oil
pressure transmitted to the punch housing shears the punch piston pin and
forces the punch piston from the punch housing and through the tubing wall.
The outside end of tapered punch being larger in diameter than the inside
end allowing the punch to fall outside tubing and clear of the perforator.
The hydraulic perforator is designed for three common tubing sizes; 2.375,
2.875 and 3.50 inch tubing. With the use of larger OD sleeves and longer
punch piston the 2.375 perforator is converted to 2.875 and 3.50 inch.

Two styles of firing pins and shell caps are available which are rim fire or
center fire. The style of firing pin must be matched with the charge.

KNUCKLE JAR

Purpose
Replacement for conventional jars where tool string length exceeds lubricator
length.

Description
Knuckle jars are made up of four components:
1. Fishing Neck
2. Knuckle Sleeve
3. Knuckle
4. Bottom Sub
When assembled a ball on the end of the stroke rod slides in a ball housing
similar to that of a tubular jar with a knuckle movement ability. The top sub has
a threaded pin connection with a fish neck and the bottom sub has a threaded
box.
Knuckle jars come in three and five inch strokes, creating an effective jarring
action with the added functionality of a knuckle joint.

Operation
Knuckle jars replace mechanical jars when the lubricator length is not sufficient
to except a wireline tool string with mechanical jars.
Knuckle jars are limited to running such things as static gradients tests or
extended tests where the recorders are hung at run depth, or in deviated wells.
Precautions
Do not run knuckle jars in any situation where it is known that jarring will be
part of the operation.

KNUCKLE JOINT

Purpose
To give tool string flexibility for running in deviated wells or crooked
tubing.
Designed same as a knuckle jar, but not having any stroke ability.

Applications
• Deviated wells
• Crooked tubing
• Flexibility for entering ON-OFF connectors
• Fishing operations in casing through tubing

Precautions
When using knuckle joints, well conditions and placement of
knuckle joint in tool string should be assessed carefully, e.g. knuckle
joints are not recommended for use in wells with high H2S content.

QUICK LOCK CONNECTION
Quick Lock Connection provides a fast safe and strong method of attaching and releasing tools by
hand. The male half is mated with the female half, then rotated through 90 deg. Whereon a
spring loaded spade in the female section engages a slot in the male section and locks the
assembly in place. It is released by pushing upon the spring and rotating again through 90 deg. It
eliminates the chance of items backing off and does away with the need for pipe wrenches.
ADVANTAGES:
Joint strength of Wireline Tools with Quick Lock Connection is much higher than joint strength of
API Sucker Rod Connection.
•There is no need to use wrenches to make or break connection.
•It is safer & faster method of connection.
•There is no possibility of unscrewing downhole.

The Quick Lock Connections are available in following sizes:

1) 1-1/2
2) 1-7/8
3) 2-1/8

SSJ ADAPTER

Purpose
Provides a method of downward jarring to shear the tool without core
contact of sub surface control being manipulated.

Description
The top sub consists of 7 components:
1. Shear Body
2. Core
3. Body
4. Shear Pin Cover
5. Lug Retainer
6. Lugs
7. Spring
Shear pin placement is now provided with a shear pin hole through the
upper part of shear body and core.
When the top sub is set and pinned, the lug retainer contacts the pulling tool
core nut holding the core in a relative running and pulling position.
The lower shear pin in the “S” series pulling tool portion must now be
removed.
When the upper shearing sub is sheared, the core and top sub adapter move
down from the downward jarring to the shear pin. This allows the lug
segments to move inward to a recessed area of the sub adapter.
The lug segments will now have enough room to move up past their original
locking profile in the shear body. When the lug segments move up so does
the lug retainer, allowing the lower core of the “S” series pulling tool to
move up and retract pulling dogs to release from the sub surface control.

Page 69
SSJ ADAPTER

Operation
The “SSJ” is used mainly for running type “X” selective test tools, the “SSJ” is
attached to tool string and ran to desired depth setting test tool in nipple
profile. This allows the option of remaining latched to fish neck at top of test
tool equalizing stem or shearing and leaving test tool set in nipple profile.
By shearing with the bottom skirt of the pulling tool landing on the main
body of the test tool eliminates damaging equalizing stem seats. Where as
conventional jar down to shear pulling tools require pin to be sheared by
core contact with downward jarring.

Precautions
“SSJ” pulling tool is pinned in the upper shear pin hole only.
Ensure the upper lug spring does not become weak, as this could cause the
pulling tool to release if the bottom of the test tool hangs up suddenly while
running in.

D-2 SHIFTING TOOL
Description
The “D-2” shifting tool is designed to shift Baker style “L” sliding sleeves.

Made up of several components, the main parts of the “D-2” shifting tool are:
1. Fishneck
2. Mandrel
3. Collet
4. Connecting Adjuster
5. Control Sleeve
6. Nut
7. Spring
8. Retractor
9. Retaining Sleeve
10. Dog
11. Dog Retainer
12. Dog Spring
13. Key
14. Thread Protector

Collets come in different OD measurements, each sleeve ID will require a corresponding

collet with a larger OD.

The purpose of the collet is to locate the sleeve desired to be shifted, the tool can then be
extended allowing the spring loaded dogs to move outward latching the inner sleeve for
shifting.

The collet design allows locating and shifting any desired sleeve in a completion with two
or more sleeves.

The selective collet feature includes both the opening and closing “L” sleeves.

The tool requires a specific distance from the square face of the shifting dog to the collet
locating profile. This measurement is done with the tool in the retracted position and
allows for the shifting tool to disengage the sleeve when the shifting sequence is complete.

Although the shifting tool can be deliberately released three steel shear pins are
incorporated at the base of the shifting dogs allowing for a safety release feature.

CASING OVERSHOT HOUSING

Purpose
The BT Casing Overshot Housing is designed to house a conventional
pulling tool while giving the user the versatility of having a larger OD
while trying to latch a small fishing neck.

Applications
The Casing Overshot Housing is generally used when there is a need to
latch a small fishing neck in larger diameter pipe or tubing, by inserting
a conventional pulling tool into the top sub, and installed the proper
size bell on the overshot housing, the ability to latch a small fishing
neck in larger bores is possible with great ease.

The Casing Overshot Housing is also valuable during fishing operations,

the bell on the bottom of the overshot eliminates the risk of travelling
past the desired target during fishing operations, bells can be machined
to specific sizes to accommodate job specifics.

SANDLINE CUTTER
Purpose
Cutting sand line from the top of tool strings stuck in the well bore.

Description
The hydraulic sand line cutter consists of many components.
The hydraulic cutter when assembled at surface is sealed with the use of
O-rings, keeping contaminated well materials from entering the internal parts of the tool. The
sand line cutter is attached to the cable to be cut at surface, when released from surface, the
cutter drops to the top of the stuck tools using the cable as a guide.

The drop bar is then released in the same manner as the cutter. The drop bar follows the same
path as the cutter landing on the striker pin driving the firing pin down, detonating the firing shell.

The Sandline Cutter may also be fired with pressure, this is accomplished by installing and
dropping the cutter in the same manner, but instead of dropping a drop bar, the wellbore is
pressure up, at a predetermined pressure set by the amount of shear pins placed within the firing
head, the shear pins will shear allowing the firing pin to contact the powder charged shell.

The detonated powder charged shell, creates gas pressure in the chamber above the piston,
driving the piston down, creating hydraulic pressure in the knife housing.

The hydraulic pressure forces the knife piston and the crimper piston out of the knife housing
cutting the cable, wedging the cable between the crimping piston and the outer sleeve at the
same time.

The crimper piston is used only in conjunction with the cutting tool outer sleeve.

The crimper piston can be used in all sizes of tubing and casing except 2 3/8”. There is now a blank
crimper piston available for use when cutting in 2 3/8” tubing.

Designed to cut wire rope or steel cable with diameters of 3/16” to 9/16” OD.
The sand line cutter has a curved slot the length of the knife housing and the upper neck of the
striker pin. The cutter is held to the cable with an upper guide and outer sleeve attached to the
knife housing.

Standard fishing necks are incorporated on the drop bar and the cutter for fishing after retrieving
the cut cable from 2 3/8” tubing should removal be required.

S LOCK MANDREL

Purpose
To selectively lock subsurface controls in compatible “F” seating nipples.

Description
The “S” lock assemblies have an external fishing neck and consist of:
1. Lock Mandrel
2. Four Lock Dogs
3. Lock Springs
4. Pins
The locks are fitted and pinned in the mandrel with two locks facing up to prevent upward
movement and two locks facing down to prevent downward movement once the lock
assembly is locked into place in the “F” seating nipple.

The “S” lock assemblies are made selective by two components, they are graduated nipple
seal bore sizes and the running tool locator ring sizes. The “S” lock assembly is ran with the
“C-1” running tool complete with locator ring and model “A” shank.

The shank is required if the lock assembly is not equipped with a removable equalizing
mandrel in the subsurface control.

The model “A” shank when threaded into the running tool and pinned to the “S” lock
assembly retracts the down facing locks for running in the well. Pulled with a “JUC” or “JDC”
pulling tool and model “A” swivel probe to unlock the up facing locks.

‘ASB’ TUBING STOP

Purpose
Setting in tubing strings without upsets, typically integral joint where couplings do
not exist.
Setting in tubing strings directly above “Baker” style plugs, or other equipment
where there is a desire not to interfere with the fishing neck.

Description
Consists of four parts:
1. Body
2. Slips
3. Retainer Band
4. Threaded Slip Carrier
5. Extension Sleeve

Applications
Set in wellbore directly above and / or on top of plugging equipment to secure in
place. The “extension sleeve” allows for setting on equipment with equalizing
prongs (such as a Baker Style FSG) so as not to impact or damage the prong.

Operation
The “ASB” slip type tubing stops are latched into a jar down to shear pulling tool
and / or a slip stop running tool and attached to the tool string.
The stop is lowered to the depth of the existing plug or sub surface tool desired to
use as a platform to set the slip type stop.
Jar down to force the slips up the tapered body and into the tubing wall, this will
also shear the pulling tool and release the stop.
Pulling the slip type tubing stop is done by attaching a pulling tool to the tool
string and lowering it to stop depth and latching the stop. Once the stop is
latched, jarring upward will unseat the stop for removal from the wellbore.

*ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE MINIMUM O.D. OF THIS TOOL WHEN IN THE RUNNING
POSITION, WILL PASS THROUGH ANY PROFILE NIPPLES ABOVE THE BLANKING
PLUG YOU ARE SETTING IT ON.

*IF USING AN A TUBING STOP ON A BAKER STYLE BLANKING PLUG, GREAT CAUTION
SHOULD BE USED TO ENSURE THAT THE O.D. OF THE TUBING STOP WILL PASS
THROUGH ALL PROFILE NIPPLES THAT MAY BE ABOVE THE BLANKING PLUG!
IT IS RECOMMENDED TO USE A ‘B’ TUBING STOP FOR THIS APPLICATION AS THEY HAVE
A SMALLER MINIMUM O.D.

Page 171
‘B’ SLIP STOPS

Purpose
Setting in tubing strings without upsets, typically integral joint where couplings
do not exist.

Description
Consists of four parts:
1. Tapered Slip Mandrel
2. Slips
3. Retaining band
4. Slip Carrier
When setting the tapered slip carrier forces the slips tight to the inner tubing wall.
Ran with a shear down pulling tool (SB/JDC).
Pulled with a “JDC” or “JUC” pulling tool.

Applications
Used to set below profile nipples and restrictions where a conventional “A” type stop would
be limited due to O.D. May also be used to secure plugging equipment in place.

Operation
Slip type tubing stops are latched into a jar down to the shear pulling tool and attached to
the tool string.
The stop is lowered down the tubing slowly until desired depth has been reached, the tool
string is accelerated downward rapidly. The velocity forces the slips up the tapered slip
mandrel setting them against the inner tubing wall.
Downward jarring sets the slips tight to the tubing wall and shears the pulling tool, setting
the stop.
Pulling the slip type stop is done by attaching a “JDC” or “JUC” pulling tool to tool string and
lowering to the stop depth latching the stop, once the stop is latched upward jarring
unseats the stop for removal from the well.

Precautions
Slip type tubing stops require velocity for setting making precise setting depths difficult to
achieve.

*Extensions may be fitted to B Stop Slip Carriers for use with Baker style blanking plugs.

‘BR’ TUBING STOP

Purpose
Setting in tubing strings without upsets, typically integral joint where couplings
do not exist.
Setting in tubing strings where there is a need for a more secure and / or
positive barrier than a conventional Slip type stop.

Description
Consists of eight parts:
1. Body
2. Slips
3. Retainer Band
4. Slip Carrier
5. Ratchet
6. Retainer
7. O-Ring
8. Set Screw

Applications
Set in wellbore to provide a platform for numerous wireline operations, Plunger lift, or as a
safeguard to prevent debris from falling down the wellbore. Used where there is a need to
retrieve stops from below profile nipples where smaller diameters will not accommodate “A”
Type Slip Stops.

Operation
The “ Ratchet” slip type tubing stops are latched into a jar down to shear pulling tool and / or a
slip stop running tool and attached to the tool string.
The stop is lowered down the tubing slowly until desired depth has been reached, the tool
string is accelerated downward rapidly. The velocity forces the slipup, the tapered slip
mandrel (body) setting them against the tubing wall, at the same instance the ratchets in the
slip carrier move over the serrated teeth on the body and lock in place at the point where the
slips are fully engaged in the tubing wall.
Jar down to ensure the slips and ratchets are securely set, this will also shear the jar down
pulling tool setting the stop.
Pulling the slip type tubing stop is done by attaching a pulling tool to the tool string and
lowering it to stop depth and latching the stop.
Once the stop is latched, jarring upward will unseat the stop, and shear the ratchets for
removal from the wellbore.

Precautions
Slip type tubing stops require velocity for setting, making precise setting depths difficult to
achieve.
Extensions may be fitted to B Stop Slip Carriers for use with Baker style blanking plugs.

Description
Consists of 3 parts:
1. Fishneck
2. Slips
3. Retainer Wire
Internal fishing neck.
When setting, the tapered slip carrier forces the slips tight to the inner
tubing wall.
Ran with a shear down pulling tool, “G” Running Tool, or a GS. Pulled with a
“GS” or “GR” pulling tool.

Operation
Attach to desired running tool and lower into wellbore to desired depth. Set
slips by jarring tapered fishneck down and forcing slips against inner tubing
wall, shear off and remove tool string wellbore.

ELEMENT

Purpose
Designed to pack off the wellbore via an expandable rubber element, used in
tandem as a straddle pack-off for isolating and containing deteriorated or damaged
tubing or as a standalone pack off when conventional plugging equipment
is not available.

Description
The BT “G” element assembly can be used for a number of different wireline operations, it can
be attached to a second element assembly via a flow tube that threads in the bottom of the
upper element assembly and the top of the lower, tubing stops above and below may be use to
lock the pack off in place.
The “G” element assembly may also be used individually in conjunction with a “G” anchor and
any of a number of different types of equalizing assemblies for various applications, the most
common being a stand alone pack off for packing off tubing where a conventional plug is not
available, or profile nipples are absent.

Operation
The “G” element assembly when run in conjunction with a “G” anchor requires that a stop of
some type set to act as a base for the pack off.
It is critical that the element be energized and the centralizing lugs are deployed before the
anchor is engaged therefore steel shear pins should be installed in the anchor to ensure that
the element assembly is engaged and a proper seal with the tubing wall is made.
When run as a straddle pack off, a conventional fishing neck will be run in place of an anchor,
tubing stops should be utilized above and below to hold the pack off in position.
To retrieve the pack off, ensure that the pressure is equalized above and below the pack off via
the preferred equalizing assembly installed prior to installation in the well bore, latch and
release the anchor, jar with spangs (or preferred type of jar) until the element assembly
disengages the tubing wall and retrieve from well.

*(excessive or heavy jarring may damage pack off)

**(it is recommended that small holes be drilled around circumference of the element to
eliminate the chance of hydraulics occurring while setting or unsetting the rubber element)

attached to the bottom and used to check for leaks in tubing string by starting at the bottom
of the tubing string and moving upward using the tubing stop as a setting platform until the
leak is found.

Operation
The BT “A” Circulating Plug can be used various ways, the first is to be set upon a tubing stop
below either a hole, or perforation in the tubing string to act as a check valve.
Another use for the circulating plug is to act as a hole finder, attach a tubing stop to the
bottom of the circulating plug via the 0.625 SR box, run into the bottom of the tubing string
and set in lower most tubing collar, at which time The hole
is filled and pressure tested for leaks. This may be repeated many times by unsetting the
tubing stop and moving up hole until the leak is isolated.

Precautions
Insure of the proper size and composition of Pump / Choke cup is used as
wellbore conditions dictate.

Purpose
Used to pressure test tubing.

Description
BT “AW” Test Plug consists of 4 components:
1. Mandrel
2. Equalizing Fishing neck
3. Body
4. Bottom No go Sub

Application
Set in a PSN or profile nipple to check the integrity before or after the tubing is
run.

Operation
Install the AW test plug in the desired nipple, this may be achieved by either
wireline or by dropping the test plug and pumping it into place.
After pressure testing, lower the tool string with a JUS / RS pulling tool into
wellbore and latch the second fishing neck of the AW test plug, jar up to shear the
pin and slide fishing neck up to expose equalizing ports. After the tubing string
has been equalized, pull the AW test plug from seal bore and remove tool string
from the wellbore.

Precautions
The BT AW Test Plug holds pressure from above only, Ensure that the no-go on
the AW test plug corresponds to the nipple to be utilized.
