EXPERIMENT C3: SIMULATION BASED ON NETWORK THEOREMS

Related course: KEEE1113 (Circuit Analysis 1)

OBJECTIVES:
1. To verify KVL and KCL input resistance
2. To study the effect of some modifications in special circuits

EQUIPMENT:
PC with PSpice

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Record all your results and observations in the PC that you are using
2. Follow the demonstrator’s instructions throughout the experiment

REFERENCE(S):
Refer to the main references of KEEE1113 (Circuit Analysis 1)

TESTS:
TEST 1: KCL and KVL
TEST 2: Superposition Theorem
TEST 3: Special circuits

TEST 1: KCL and KVL

S’ I1 I2 I5 C
S 100Ω 100Ω 50Ω

V1 5V I3 220Ω I4 220Ω 150Ω

Figure 1

1. Construct the circuit as shown in Figure 1 in PSpice.

2. Using PSpice, determine the current I1, I2 and I3. Then,
a) Verify that I1, I2 and I3 obey KCL.
b) Calculate the input resistance = V1/I1.
3. Also determine the current I2, I4 and I5. Again, verify that they obey KCL.
4. Determine the voltages between (i)S and A, (ii) A and B, (iii) B and G. Verify that they
obey KVL.
5. Verify KVL for loops SAGS, ABGA and SABGS.
6. Insert a 470 Ω resistance between S’ and G. Note the change in the current I5.
Explain why does this happen.

TEST 2: Superposition Theorem

1. Open the circuit BC. Insert a 5V DC voltage between C and G (in series with 150 Ω
resistor) (G negative w.r.t. C).
2. Determine the current I2.
3. Then, determine I2 with source V1 replaced by a short circuit. Verify the Superposition
Theorem.

TEST 3: Special circuits

1. Construct the network as shown in Figure 2, where each R=120 Ω.

2. Insert 5V DC voltage between A and B.
3. Determine the current in branch AA’.
4. Calculate the input resistance.
5. Determine the voltages between (i) B and C, (ii) B and D, (iii) C and D. Comment on
your results.
6. Replace branch CD by a short circuit. Determine the current in branch AA’. Comment
on your results.
7. Replace branch CD by an open. Determine the current in branch AA’. Comment on
your results.
