and.
~ glazings of fire resistance categories G (glazings
Fesistant against fire)
These components must in adition fulfil other require
‘ments not mentioned in this Standard (see also Section 4).
Other components such as ¢.9. load-bearing and nan-toad
bearing walls, floors, columns, joists and glazings of fire
resistance category F') are dealt with in DIN 4102 Part2;

3. Definitions
“The fire behaviour of special components covered by this
Standard is characterized by the fire resistance time and
by other properties listed below.
‘The fire resistance time is the minimum time in minutes
during which the components fulfil the requirements of
‘Sections 5.2, 6.2 or 7.2 in the test according to Sections
53,630r73.
Components are classified into the fire resistance cate-
gories according to Table 1 or Table 2 corresponding to
their fire resistance time.
Barriers in lift wells of fire resistance category F 90 are
rot themselves classified in fire resistance categories.
4 Proof of fire behaviour
4.1, With fire tests
‘The fire resistance time must be proved in accordance
with this Standard for
— fire barriers, by tests according to Section 6.3,
— barriers in lift wells of fire resistance category F 20,
by tests according to Section 6.3,
~ alazings, by the test according to Section 7.3,
“The classification shall be based on the least favourable
result of tests on at least two test specimens.
The usability of nomstandardized types of fire barriers,
barriers in lift wells of fire resistance category F 90 and
glazings of fire resistance categories G cannot be assessed
solely from test certificates according to this Standard;
further proots of suitability have to be provided, e.g. jn
the context of the granting of a general “bauaufsichtliche
Zulassung’” (building code licence).
42. Without fir
For components classified in a fire resistance category in
DIN 4102 Part 4, no further proof is necessary.

5 Fire barriers
5.1 Definition
Fire barriers are automatically closing doors and auto
matically closing barriers of other types (e.9. shutters,
*) Glazings of fire resistance categories F must all Fulfil
the requirements for space-enclosing walls of the
appropriate fire resistance category ~ in particular
they must also prevent the passage of thermal radia
tion — see DIN 4102 Part 2.
2) Compare also “Directions for licensing of fre barriers"
of the Institut far Bautechnik, Berlin (December 1976
issue)roller shutters, gates) designed, when they are installed,
to prevent passage of a fire through openings in walls of
floors.
5.2. Requirements
5.2.1. Fire barriers must fulfil the following requirements
‘and there must be no ground for objection with respect,
‘0 the information to be included in the test certificate
‘according to Section 5.4
The following fire resistance categories are distinguished:

5.2.2. Fire barriers must withstand the mechanical stress
Of the test according to Section 8.3.2 in such a manner
‘that they remain fully functional, exhibit no externally
Visible damage and fulfil the following requiroments.
5.2.3. Fire barriers must close automatically.
5.2.4. Fire barriers must not collapse during the fire test
within a test period corresponding to the fire resistance
time according to Table 1 nor must they open either
partly or completely as a result of failure of the closure
‘or locking parts or holding devices (e.g. hinges).
5.2.5 With a fire test for a test period corresponding to
the fire resistance time according to Table 1,
— the space-enclosing effect of the fire barriers must be
maintained and
— passage of the fire must be prevented.
‘This requirement is deemed to have been fulfilled if, on
the unexposed side.
1, apad of cotton woo! placed against the barrier dows
not catch fire (smouldering of the pad of cotton woo!
is considered as ignition) in the test according to
DIN 4102 Part 2, September 1977 issue, Section 6.2.6.
2. no flames occur
Note: Smouldering of the surface of the fire barrier
‘may occur in the strip-shaped edge surface according
10 Section 5.2.6 provided it does not ignite the pad of
‘cotton wool.
3. at the measuring points on the measurement canopy
(see Section 5.3.7) the average temperature rises by
no more than 140 K above the initial temperature at
the start of the test and that at no measuring point
does the temperature rises by more than 180 K above
the initial temperature.
6.2.6 In the fire test during a test period corresponding
10 the fire resistance time according to Table 1, the
unexposed side of the fire barriers shall not heat up by
‘more than 140 K,, taking an average of measuring points
110 5, above the initial temperature of the test specimen
at the start of the test.
‘At no measuring point must a temperature rise of more
than 180 K above the initial temperature occur. The edge

strip of the movable part of barriers and the wall surface
adjacent to the opening and in the reveal, the temperature
"ise during the fire tests should be ignored, This strip has
width of Vag of the inside height of the opening, subject
toa maximum of 100mm and runs directly adjacent to
‘the boundary of the inside opening and around the door
handle penetration. In the case of multileaf doors, such
2 strip should also be allowed on each side of a line
bisecting the rebated area common to two leaves of the
door.
5.2.7 Fire barriers must comply with the above condi
tions after being subjected to the strength test according
to DIN 4102 Part 2, September 1977 issue, Section 6.2.9.
5.2.8 If the barriers contain light-admitting elements,
the light-admitting area and the retaining devices must
also comply with the above requirements. A test according
to Section 7 of this Standard is not considered a sufficient.
53 Tests
53.1. Before the fire test, the test specimens should be
‘ested in the built-in condition for effectiveness of the
closure devices.
5.3.2. Before the fire test, door leaves (in the case of
‘wo4eaf doors, both leaves) should be tested by closing
5000 times from an opening angle of 50°; the closing
action for this purpose must be in conformity with prac
tice. Sliding oF lifting doors or gates or roller shutters
should be tested in a similar manner according to their
type.
5.3.3 The test specimens should be subjected to the tests
‘according to DIN 4102 Part 2 in the dimensions as pro:
posed for their practical use, including fixings, closure
devices, locks and fittings and with a curface treatment
corresponding to the service condition (if necessary, with
‘out a final coat 2).
If the fire barriers are to be installed in masonry walls at
least 11.5¢m thick according to DIN 1053 Part 1 with
brick strengths 2 10 N/mm? or in concrete walls at least
10m thick according to DIN 1045 of at least strength
category Bn 100, the test specimens shall be set with
their frames in a wall 11.5em thick according to
DIN 1053 Part 1, using bricks HLz A 1.4/180 according
{0 DIN 105, mortar group IL
If the fire barriers are to be installed, for practical use, in
‘masonry walls according to DIN 1063 Part 1 at least
24cm thick, with brick strengths 2 10 N/mm? or in con:
crete walls according to DIN 1045 at least 20 om thick
and at least of strength category Bn 100, the test speci
mens shall be set in 24m thick walls constructed as,
above,
If the fire barriers, when used in practice, are to be
installed in other walls (e.g. lightly constructed partitions
(or walls of lower strength building materials), the test
specimens shall be subjected to fire tests in conjunction
with walls of this type.
In the fire tests, the heating should be on the hinge side
of one test specimen and then on the other side of the
other test specimen, When the fire exposure is on the
‘opposite side to the hinges of the fire barrier, the distance
Of the measuring points for measuring temperature in the
fire room should be referred to the surface of the wall
exposed to flame.
