Questions:
1. Define homologous and analogous structures.
Analogous structure is defined as the similarity of function and superficial resemblance of
structures that have different origins. For example, the wings of a fly, a moth, and a bird are
analogous because they developed structures intended for the same function which is flying.
Homologous structures on the other hand, it’s when different animals have structures that seem to
have similar form or function and seem to be related.
2. How are plants and animals classified?
Biological scientists classify the animals and plants based upon physical structures and
characteristics. They place them in a hierarchy of groupings, beginning with the kingdom animalia
and proceeding through phyla, classes, orders, families, genera and species.
3. How does DNA relate to the classification and naming of organisms?
Biochemical similarities can be used to identify closely related organisms. Proteins such as
enzymes and hemoglobin have more differences in their amino acid sequences as organisms become
more distantly related
4. Why there is need to classify organisms?
 It makes the study of living organisms and their relationships much easier.
 Classifying organisms also help us keep track on the organisms with similar characteristics
that are endangered or nearly extinct.
 The study of a few representatives from each distinct group helps us to know about the
characteristic features of organisms of that group.
 It indicates the evolutionary relationship between different groups of organisms.
Generalization:
Animals, plants and all other organisms are classified according to Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order,
Family, Genus and Species. Homology and Analogy are evidences of evolution that help in studying and
interpreting evolutionary relationships between organisms. DNA also play a vital role in classifying organisms
which gives more accuracy as it goes deeper in a cellular and molecular level. As curious human beings, it is
necessary for us to classify these organisms for us to be able to understand better about how life came into
existence and eventually diversify into various organisms.
