LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Dear Neighbors,
It is with great regret that we announce the demise of the West Park View
Community League. Due to a lack of participation and interest, we have no
slate of officers to present to the league membership for the 2011 league
year.
The Board met with the nominating committee Chair, Donna Wooley, last
Monday night and were unable to fill the positions of President, Vice
President, Treasurer and Secretary.
The current Board has served for many years in multiple positions as well
as volunteering for every event and they are ready to pass on the reins. To
be able to maintain neighborhood safety, our reputation in the community
and to continue to accomplish the many things we have worked on for
years, we need new faces.
This is YOUR neighborhood. Think about why you chose to live in West
Park View and how you see your home and neighborhood in your future.
At the October 11th league meeting the floor will be open for discussion
and nominations from the floor for the 2011 slate of officers. Are you
interested in a position and would like to know what each office requires?
Please reference your league directory for a brief description of each
office. If you have any questions before Monday night please contact any
of the officers listed in this newsletter.

The View is produced monthly for All league business will continue until Dec 31, 2010 with the current

COMMUNITY YARD SALE

We will be having a community yard sale on Saturday, October 30, 2010, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the
home of Sue Cavalieri, 1519 SPRATLEY STREET. We will be selling coffee and danish/muffins for
breakfast and hotdogs at lunch. If you have anything you wish to donate, please call me. If you would like to
rent a space of your own, call me and I will put your name on the list. One space will rent for $10.00. Please
do not bring food to sell from your space. As usual, we will need plenty of help setting up and pricing items,
cooking, etc. If you can volunteer your time, please call me. The proceeds will be divided between West Park
View Community and Owens Creek Park. We always have a good time at these functions so come out and join
us. You may find something you just can’t live without. Kathy Cary – 399-8283.
MAYFLOWER MARATHON

The annual Mayflower Marathon supporting the South Hampton Roads Food Bank is Nov19-22nd. 106.9 radio
station has sponsored this event for many years. Last year several of our new families put together a great idea
and we filled the red and blue school bus you see in the neighborhood. We donated over 1500 lbs of food last
year and hope to do more this year. Sunday Nov 14th you will receive a Food Lion bag with instructions on
how to fill it up. Leave the bag on your porch Friday evening Nov 19th before 7pm. The bus will be parked on
the corner of McDaniel and Peninsula, by the park that afternoon for early drop offs. (3-6:30p) Starting at
6:30pm the team will drive the bus thru the neighborhood and collect the rest of the filled food bags. The party
continues at the Marathon drop site. Thanks for your continued support.

The Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Candidate Forum October 14th in City Council chambers at 5:30pm.
The Special election for Mayor is November 2, 2010

OWENS CREEK PARK

The Scott’s Creek Park Committee is asking for your newspapers this month! The newspapers will be used this
Fall in the preparation of plantings around the benches and a bird/butterfly garden at our park. Bag all you can
and leave a message at 397-4301. Someone will drive by and pick up your bags from your yard on said date.
With your help, you'll be seeing some positive progress on our park. If you have ideas to share concerning
Owens Creek Park. please attend the civic league meetings and share Thank you! Donna Wooley

URGENT!! URGENT!! URGENT!! URGENT!! URGENT!! URGENT!!

Time to pay attention folks. We have had several burglaries and attempted break-ins that have occurred both
daytime and nighttime. Please be very cautious. If you see any unusual activity in West Park View, please call
Officer Bill Baker, the Portsmouth non-emergency number or 911 - but please make anything you see that is out
of the ordinary a priority and call it in. We've had activity on Barron, McDaniel, Bain and A Streets (that I
know of so far). PLEASE keep your home well lit, front, side and back. It costs pennies to keep those lights on
and $$ to replace your personal belongings when someone decides to take them from you. Some of our streets
are not well lit by the light poles. If you need some help installing additional lighting. I'm sure we can get
someone to help you out. If you see someone near a house where they don't belong...anything unusual..,
CALL!!! This is really important. It is time to stick together and protect our homes. Watching out for
