FOREWORD
During this first quarter of 1995, Sabbath school members around the
world will be studying Lessons From the Epistles ofPeter. Why is this such an
important subject for us today? Peter's epistles bring out certain circum-
stances which directly affect the people of God in these last days of earth's
history. We all need to be refreshed with a solid biblical understanding of
key points such as the hope of salvation, the priesthood of all believers, the
true Christian's demeanor in the home, church, and society (particularly
when facing persecution), shepherding the flock of Christ, the discernment
of true prophecy as opposed to false, and planning for the glorious hereafter.
Another essential point in the epistles of Peter is the path of Christian pro-
gress by which we become partakers of the divine nature. The following
excerpts from the pen of Inspiration emphasize the importance of this expe-
rience in advancing to perfection of character.
" 'Partakers of the divine nature.' Is this possible? Of ourselves we can
do no good thing. How, then, can we be partakers of the divine nature?-By
coming to Christ just as we are, needy, helpless, dependent. He died to make
it possible for us to be partakers of the divine nature. He took humanity
upon Himself that He might reach humanity. With the golden chain of His
matchless love he has bound us to the throne of God. We are to have power
to overcome as He overcame.... We are to cooperate with God. Thus only
can we be partakers of the divine nature.
"Here is the consistency of true religion. We are to be 'laborers together
with God,' working in harmony with Him. 'Ye are God's husbandry, ye are
God's building.' This figure represents human character, which is to be
wrought upon point by point. Each day God works on His building to perfect
the structure, that it may become a holy temple for Him. Man is to cooperate
with God, striving in His strength to make himself what God designs him to be,
building his life with pure, noble deeds."- The Review and Herald, April 14, 1904.
"Those who are partakers of the divine nature will not give way to temp-
tation. The enemy is working with all his might to overcome those who are
striving to live the Christian life. He comes to them with temptations, in the
hope that they will yield. Thus he hopes to discourage them. But those who
have planted their feet firmly on the Rock of Ages will not yield to his devices.
devices. They will remember that God is their Father and Christ their Helper.
The Saviour came to our world to bring to every tried, tempted soul strength
to overcome even as He overcame. I know the power of temptation; I know
the dangers that are in the way; but I know, too, that strength sufficient for
every time of need is provided for those who are struggling against temptation.
" 'God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are
able: but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be
able to bear it.' And we also have a part to act. We are not to place ourselves
needlessly in the way of temptation. God says, 'Come out from among them,
and be ye separate, ... and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive

-3-
you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters.'
If by associating with worldlings for pleasure, by conforming to worldly
practises, by uniting our interests with unbelievers, we place our feet in the
path of temptation and sin, how can we expect God to keep us from falling?
"Keep yourselves away from the corrupting influences of the world. Do not
go unbidden to places where the forces of the enemy are strongly entrenched.
Do not go where you will be tempted and led astray. But if you have a mes-
sage for unbelievers, and if you live so near to God that you can speak to
them a word in season, you can do a work that will help them and will honor
God. 'I pray not,' Christ said, 'that thou shouldest take them out of the
world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.' "-Messages to Young
People, pp. 81, 82.
"We shall pass through this world only once. Let us, then, be careful
how we speak and act. Let us be careful where we place our feet, lest the
lame be turned out of the way. Let us so live that God can make us partakers
of the divine nature, enabling us to obtain victories, and overcome as Christ
overcame.
"God asks us to live only one day at a time. You need not look a week or
a month ahead. Today do your best. Today speak and act in a way that will
honor God. The promise is, 'As thy days, so shall thy strength be.
"Troublous times are before us. The judgments of God are abroad in the
land. Calamities follow one another in rapid succession. Soon God is to rise
out of His place to shake terribly the earth, and to punish the inhabitants for
their iniquity. Then He will stand up in behalf of His people, and will give
them His protecting care. He will throw His everlasting arms around them
to shield them from all harm.
"After the passing of the time in 1844, a number of the brethren and
sisters were assembled in a meeting. All were very sad; for the disappoint-
ment had been sore. Presently a man came in, crying, 'Courage in the Lord,
brethren, courage in the Lord.' This he repeated again and again, till every
face was aglow, and every voice was lifted in praise to God. And this morn-
ing 1 say to you, 'Courage in the Lord.' Ever since 1844 1 have been pro-
claiming present truth, and today this truth is dearer to me than ever
before." - The Review and Herald, April 14, 1904.
"Will it make us miserable to follow this plan of Christian progression?-
No. It will bring heaven nearer to us. We may have the sweet peace and con-
solation of God in doing this work. These steps will take us into the atmo-
sphere of heaven; for as God sees His children seeking to carry out His
instruction in their habits and thoughts, He multiplies grace, and gives them
wisdom that cometh down from above, that is 'first pure, then peaceable,
gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits.' 'Wherefore
the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure;
for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.' "-Ibid., February 21, 1888.

Peter
"The word Peter signifies a stone-a rolling stone. Peter was not the
rock upon which the church was founded. The gates of hell did prevail
against him when he denied his Lord with cursing and swearing. The
church was built upon One against whom the gates of hell could not
prevail."-The Desire of Ages, p. 413.

KEY TEXT: "Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas,
which is by interpretation, A stone" (John 1:42).

THE CALL January 1

1. Who were the first disciples called by Jesus? What motivated them
to follow Him? John 1:35-42.

"[These first disciples] had responded to the Holy Spirit's call in the
preaching of John the Baptist. Now they recognized the voice of the heavenly
Teacher. To them the words of Jesus were full of freshness and truth and
beauty. A divine illumination was shed upon the teaching of the Old Testa-
ment Scriptures. The many-sided themes of truth stood out in new light. ...
"Andrew sought to impart the joy that filled his heart. Going in search
of his brother Simon, he cried, 'We have found the Messias.' Simon waited
for no second bidding. He also had heard the preaching of John the Baptist,
and he hastened to the Saviour. The eye of Christ rested upon him, reading
his character and his life history. His impulsive nature, his loving, sym-
pathetic heart, his ambition and self-confidence, the history of his fall, his
repentance, his labors, and his martyr death-the Saviour read it all."- The
Desire of Ages, p. 139.

2. To what social class did Peter belong, and what was his occupation?
Matthew 4: 18-20.

"The first pupils of Jesus were chosen from the ranks of the common
people. They were humble, unlettered men, these fishers of Galilee; men
unschooled in the learning and customs of the rabbis, but trained by the
stern discipline of toil and hardship. They were men of native ability and of
teachable spirit; men who could be instructed and molded for the Saviour's
work."-Education, p. 85.

CHARACTER TRAITS BEFORE CONVERSION January 2

3. What was Peter's reaction when he heard that his Master-and also
His followers-must suffer persecution and death? What strong
rebuke did he have to accept? Matthew 16:21-23.

"Peter did not desire to see the cross in the work of Christ. The impres-
sion which his words would make was directly opposed to that which Christ
desired to make on the minds of His followers, and the Saviour was moved
to utter one of the sternest rebukes that ever fell from His lips." - The Desire
of Ages, pp. 415, 416.
"There had been a time in Peter's experience when he was unwilling to
see the cross in the work of Christ. When the Saviour made known to the
disciples His impending sufferings and death, Peter exclaimed, 'Be it far
from Thee, Lord: this shall not be unto Thee.' Matthew 16:22. Self-pity,
which shrank from fellowship with Christ in suffering, prompted Peter's
remonstrance. It was to the disciple a bitter lesson, and one which he learned
but slowly, that the path of Christ on earth lay through agony and humilia-
tion." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 525.

4. What high opinion did Peter have of himself? Mark 14:27,29; Luke
22:33. What serious warning should have shocked him out of his
presumptuous self-trust? Luke 22:31, 32, 34.

"When Peter said he would follow his Lord to prison and to death, he
meant it, every word of it; but he did not know himself. Hidden in his heart
were elements of evil that circumstances would fan into life. Unless he was
made conscious of his danger, these would prove his eternal ruin. The Sav-
iour saw in him a self-love and assurance that would overbear even his love
for Christ. Much of infirmity, of unmortified sin, carelessness of spirit,
unsanctified temper, heedlessness in entering into temptation, had been
revealed in his experience. Christ's solemn warning was a call to heart search-
ing.... But Peter felt that he was distrusted, and he thought it cruel. He was
already offended, and he became more persistent in his self-confidence."-
The Desire of Ages, pp. 673, 674.

TEST AND FALL January 3

5. What rash act did the impulsive Peter perform when Jesus was
arrested? How did Jesus rebuke him? John 18:10; Matthew
26:52-54.

"[The disciples] were disappointed and indignant as they saw the cords
brought forward to bind the hands of Him whom they loved. Peter in his
anger rashly drew his sword and tried to defend his Master, but he only cut
off an ear of the high priest's servant. When Jesus saw what was done, He

-6-
released His hands, though held firmly by the Roman soldiers, and saying,
'Suffer ye thus far,' He touched the wounded ear, and it was instantly made
whole."- The Desire of Ages, p. 696.

6. How soon was the Saviour's warning of Peter's fall fulfilled? Mat-
thew 26:57,58,69-74. What could have protected him from this
sin? Matthew 26:40,41.

"It was in sleeping when Jesus bade him watch and pray that Peter had
prepared the way for his great sin. All the disciples, by sleeping in that
critical hour, sustained a great loss. Christ knew the fiery ordeal through
which they were to pass. He knew how Satan would work to paralyze their
senses that they might be unready for the trial. Therefore it was that He
gave them warning. Had those hours in the garden been spent in watching and
prayer, Peter would not have been left to depend upon his own feeble
strength. He would not have denied his Lord."-TheDesireofAges, pp. 713, 714.

D Wednesday
THE CONVERSION January 4

7. When did Peter's pride and self-conceit break down? Luke 22:61,62.

"While the degrading oaths were fresh upon Peter's lips, and the shrill
crowing of the cock was still ringing in his ears, the Saviour turned from the
frowning judges, and looked full upon His poor disciple. At the same time
Peter's eyes were drawn to his Master. In that gentle countenance he read deep
pity and sorrow, but there was no anger there.
''The sight of that pale, suffering face, those quivering lips, that look of
compassion and forgiveness, pierced his heart like an arrow. Conscience was
aroused. Memory was active....
"He pressed on in solitude and darkness, he knew not and cared not
whither. At last he found himself in Gethsemane....
"It was torture to his bleeding heart to know that he had added the
heaviest burden to the Saviour's humiliation and grief. On the very spot where
Jesus had poured out His soul in agony to His Father, Peter fell upon his face,
and wished that he might die."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 712, 713.

8. What expression did Peter see in the eyes of the Saviour after he had
denied Him? What hope does this give to every tried and tempted soul?
John 13:1 (last part).

"If the look that Jesus cast upon him had spoken condemnation instead of
pity; if in foretelling the sin He had failed of speaking hope, how dense would
have been the darkness that encompassed Peter! how reckless the despair of
that tortured soul! In that hour of anguish and self-abhorrence, what could have
held him back from the path trodden by Judas?
"He who could not spare His disciple the anguish, left him not alone to its
bitterness. His is a love that fails not nor forsakes."-Eduaztion, pp. 89, 90.

THE REINSTATEMENT D Thursday
TO HIS FORMER POSITION January 5

9. Which disciple was mentioned by name in the first message of

Christ's resurrection? Mark 16:5-7.

10. On what occasion was Peter reinstated to his former position

among the disciples, after they had witnessed his repentance and
changed attitude? John 21:15-17.

"Three times Peter had openly denied his Lord, and three times Jesus
drew from him the assurance of his love and loyalty, pressing home that
pointed question, like a barbed arrow to his wounded heart. Before the
assembled disciples Jesus revealed the depth of Peter's repentance, and
showed how thoroughly humbled was the once boasting disciple....
"The close, testing questions of the Lord had not called out one for-
ward, self-sufficient reply; and because of his humiliation and repentance,
Peter was better prepared than ever before to act as shepherd to the
flock. ...
"Before his fall, Peter was always speaking unadvisedly, from the
impulse of the moment. He was always ready to correct others, and to express
his mind, before he had a clear comprehension of himself or of what he had
to say. But the converted Peter was very different. He retained his former
fervor, but the grace of Christ regulated his zeal. He was no longer impe-
tuous, self-confident, and self-exalted, but calm, self-possessed, and
teachable. He could then feed the lambs as well as the sheep of Christ's
flock." - The Desire of Ages, pp. 812, 815.

The Great Hope of Salvation

"In this hope of a sure inheritance in the earth made new, the early
Christians rejoiced, even in times of severe trial and affliction."-The
Acts of the Apostles, pp. 517, 518.

KEY TEXT: "Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see
him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full
of glory: receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of
your souls" (1 Peter 1:8, 9).

A. ZEALOUS WITNESS FOR CHRIST January 8

1. After the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, what evidence

do we have that Peter was a particularly zealous and untiring
witness for Christ? Acts 2:14, 32-36. What was the result of his
preaching? Acts 2:37-41.

"Little mention is made in the book of Acts of the later work of the
apostle Peter. During the busy years of ministry that followed the outpour-
ing of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, he was among those who put forth
untiring efforts to reach the Jews who came to Jerusalem to worship at the
time of the annual festivals." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 514.

2. What fearless words did Peter use to address the Jewish leaders
when the apostles appeared before the council? Acts 4:8-12,19,20.

"Annas and Caiaphas, with the other dignitaries of the temple, met
together for the trial, and the prisoners were brought before them. In that
very room and before some of those very men, Peter had shamefully denied
his Lord. This came distinctly to his mind as he appeared for his own trial.
He now had an opportunity of redeeming his cowardice."- The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 62.
"[Acts 4:10-12 quoted.] This courageous defense appalled the Jewish
leaders. They had supposed that the disciples would be overcome with fear
and confusion when brought before the Sanhedrin. But, instead, these wit-
nesses spoke as Christ had spoken, with a convincing power that silenced
their adversaries."- The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 63, 64.

A FAITHFUL UNDERSHEPHERD January 9

3. How was Peter used as a prominent instrument in the progress of

the first Christian church? Acts 5:12-15.

"As the number of believers multiplied in Jerusalem and in other places

visited by the messengers of the cross, the talents possessed by Peter proved
of untold value to the early Christian church. The influence of his testimony
concerning Jesus of Nazareth extended far and wide."- The Acts of the Apostles,
p.514.

4. What advice, given by Peter to the elders, reveals how seriously he

regarded the commission given to him by the Lord? 1 Peter 5:2, 3.

"Throughout his ministry, Peter faithfully watched over the flock

entrusted to his care, and thus proved himself worthy of the charge and
responsibility given him by the Saviour. Ever he exalted Jesus of Nazareth
as the Hope of Israel, the Saviour of mankind. He brought his own life under
the discipline of the Master Worker. By every means within his power he
sought to educate the believers for active service. His godly example and
untiring activity inspired many young men of promise to give themselves
wholly to the work of the ministry. As time went on, the apostle's influence
as an educator and leader increased; and while he never lost his burden to
labor especially for the Jews, yet he bore his testimony in many lands and
strengthened the faith of multitudes in the gospel."- The Acts of the Apostles,
pp. 516, 517.

D Tuesday
INTRODUCTION TO THE FIRST EPISTLE January 10

5. How did Peter introduce himself in his first epistle? To whom was
this letter addressed? 1 Peter 1:1,2.

"In the later years of his ministry, Peter was inspired to write to the
believers 'scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and
Bithynia.' His letters were the means of reviving the courage and strength-
ening the faith of those who were enduring trial and affliction, and of renew-
ing to good works those who through manifold temptations were in danger
of losing their hold upon God. These letters bear the impress of having been
written by one in whom the sufferings of Christ and also His consolation had
been made to abound; one whose entire being had been transformed by
grace, and whose hope of eternal life was sure and steadfast." - The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 517.

6. To what great hope did Peter direct the attention of the believers?
1 Peter 1:3-5.

-10 -
"Peter wrote to the believers at a time of peculiar trial to the church.
Many had already become partakers of Christ's sufferings, and soon the
church was to undergo a period of terrible persecution. Within a few brief
years many of those who had stood as teachers and leaders in the church
were to lay down their lives for the gospel. Soon grievous wolves were to
enter in, not sparing the flock. But none of these things were to bring dis-
couragement to those whose hopes were centered in Christ. With words of
encouragement and good cheer Peter directed the minds of the believers
from present trials and future scenes of suffering 'to an inheritance incor-
ruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away.' "- The Acts of the Apostles,
p.528.
o Wednesday
AFTER ALL TRIALS, SALVATION January 11

7. With what are all believers to comfort themselves and fellow

believers when they suffer trials, temptations, and persecution?
1 Peter 1:6-9; James 1:12; 1 Peter 4:12, 13.

"In the future we shall see how closely all our trials were connected
with our salvation, and how these light afflictions worked out for us 'a far
more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.' "-The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1099.

8. Which sublime theme did the patriarchs and prophets and even the
angels desire to study? 1 Peter 1:10-12.

"The prophets to whom these great scenes were revealed longed to

understand their import. ... To us who are standing on the very verge of
their fulfillment, of what deep moment, what living interest, are these
delineations of the things to come-events for which, since our first parents
turned their steps from Eden, God's children have watched and waited,
longed and prayed!"-Education, p. 183.

YOU SHALL BE HOLY January 12

9. What command is given to all who are earnestly preparing for sal-
vation? 1 Peter 1:13-16. What had God commanded ancient Israel?
Leviticus 19:2.

"The thoughts must be centered upon God. We must put forth earnest
effort to overcome the evil tendencies of the natural heart. Our efforts, our
self-denial and perseverance, must be proportionate to the infinite value of
the object of which we are in pursuit. Only by overcoming as Christ over-
came shall we win the crown of life."-The Ministry of Healing, p. 455.
"As Jehovah is holy, He requires His people to be holy, pure, undefiled;
for without holiness no man shall see the Lord."- The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 939.

-11-
10. What should be a constant source of encouragement to us in our
daily striving for the high goal of holiness? 1 Peter 1:17-20;
1 Corinthians 6: 19, 20.

"Jesus is our atoning sacrifice. We can make no atonement for our-

selves; but by faith we can accept the atonement that has been made. [1 Peter
3:18; 1:18, 19 quoted.] It was through infinite sacrifice and inexpressible suf-
fering that our Redeemer placed redemption within our reach. He was in
this world unhonored and unknown, that, through His wonderful condescen-
sion and humiliation, He might exalt man to receive eternal honors and
immortal joys in the heavenly courts." -Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 321, 322.
"God has bought us, and He claims a throne in each heart. Our minds
and bodies must be subordinated to Him, and the natural habits and appe-
tites must be made subservient to the higher wants of the soul. But we can
place no dependence upon ourselves in this work. We cannot with safety
follow our own guidance. The Holy Spirit must renew and sanctify us. In
God's service there must be no halfway work."-The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1088.

1:22, 23; John 13:35.

"Love is a heavenly attribute. The natural heart cannot originate it.

This heavenly plant only flourishes where Christ reigns supreme. Where
love exists, there is power and truth in the life. Love does good and nothing
but good. Those who have love bear fruit unto holiness, and in the end ever-

"The children of God love one another, truly, sincerely, unaffectedly-
'without partiality, and without hypocrisy.' And this because the heart is in
love with Jesus.... When compared with this true, sanctified, disciplined
affection, the shallow courtesy of the world, the meaningless expression of effu-
sive friendship, are as chaff to the wheat."-Sons and Daughters of God, p. 101.

the world and its people and the living Word of God? 1 Peter 1:24,

"Truths, precious, vital truths, are bound up with man's eternal well-
being both in this life and in the eternity that is opening before us. 'Sanctify
them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.' John 17:17. The word of God is

folly, and backbiting. They will say aecidedly, 'Take this dish away. I do not

ing the very spirit of the devil; for it is his business to be an accuser of the

4. What are all believers called to be and to do? 1 Peter 2:5; Ephesians
2:19-22.

"Upon this living stone, Jews and Gentiles alike may build. This is the
only foundation upon which we may securely build. It is broad enough for
all, and strong enough to sustain the weight and burden of the whole world.
And by connection with Christ, the living stone, all who build upon this foun-
dation become living stones. Many persons are by their own endeavors
hewn, polished, and beautified; but they cannot become 'living stones,'
because they are not connected with Christ. Without this connection, no
man can be saved. Without the life of Christ in us, we cannot withstand the
storms of temptation."- The Desire of Ages, p. 599.

THE PRECIOUS CORNERSTONE January 17

5. What symbol did the prophet Isaiah use to portray the Saviour? To
which incident in the history of Israel did this symbol refer? Isaiah
28:16.

"When the temple of Solomon was erected, the immense stones for the
walls and the foundation were entirely prepared at the quarry; after they
were brought to the place of building, not an instrument was to be used upon
them; the workmen had only to place them in position. For use in the founda-
tion, one stone of unusual size and peculiar shape had been brought; but the
workmen could find no place for it, and would not accept it. It was an annoy-
ance to them as it lay unused in their way. Long it remained a rejected stone.
But when the builders came to the laying of the corner, they searched for a
long time to find a stone of sufficient size and strength, and of the proper
shape, to take that particular place, and bear the great weight which would
rest upon it. ... [A]t last attention was called to the stone so long rejected.
It had been exposed to the air, to sun and storm, without revealing
the slightest crack. The builders examined this stone. It had borne every

-14 -
test but one. If it could bear the test of severe pressure, they decided to
accept it for the cornerstone. The trial was made. The stone was accepted,
brought to its assigned position, and found to be an exact fit. In prophetic
vision, Isaiah was shown that this stone was a symbol of Christ." - The Desire
of Ages, pp. 597, 598.

6. What else was prophesied about this precious stone? How can He
become a stumbling stone to people? Isaiah 8:13-15. How did
Christ link this prophecy to Himself and His mission? Matthew
21:42-44.

"To those who believe, Christ is the sure foundation. These are they
who fall upon the Rock and are broken. Submission to Christ and faith in
Him are here represented. To fall upon the Rock and be broken is to give up
our self-righteousness and to go to Christ with the humility of a child,
repenting of our transgressions, and believing in His forgiving love. And so
also it is by faith and obedience that we build on Christ as our foundation."
- The Desire of Ages, p. 599.
" 'To them which stumble at the word, being disobedient,' Christ is a
rock of offense....
"And on 'whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.' The
people who rejected Christ were soon to see their city and their nation
destroyed. Their glory would be broken, and scattered as the dust before the
wind. And what was it that destroyed the Jews? It was the rock which, had
they built upon it, would have been their security. It was the goodness of
God despised, the righteousness spurned, the mercy slighted. Men set them-
selves in opposition to God, and all that would have been their salvation was
turned to their destruction." -Ibid., p. 600.

7. How does Peter explain the truth about the precious cornerstone,
and what is its practical application? 1 Peter 2:6-8.

"The apostle Peter, writing by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, clearly

shows to whom Christ is a foundation stone, and to whom a rock of offense."
- The Desire of Ages, p. 599.

8. Which precious Bible text encompasses both a promise and a great

responsibility? To whom does it especially apply? 1 Peter 2:9, 10;
Romans 9:25, 26, 30-33.

"In these final hours of probation for the sons of men, when the fate of
every soul is so soon to be decided forever, the Lord of heaven and earth
expects His church to arouse to action as never before. Those who have been
made free in Christ through a knowledge of precious truth, are regarded by
the Lord Jesus as His chosen ones, favored above all other pyople on

-15 -
the face of the earth; and He is counting on them to show forth the praises of
Him who hath called them out of darkness into marvelous light. The bless-
ings which are so liberally bestowed are to be communicated to others. The
good news of salvation is to go to every nation, kindred, tongue, and
people." -Prophets and Kings, p. 716.

A VIGILANT, FIERCE ENEMY January 19

9. Who is always prepared to dispute our precious privilege to be a

chosen race and a royal priesthood? What should we do? 1 Peter
5:8, 9; 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8.

"The inspired warning is sounding down the centuries to our time: 'Be
sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,
walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.' 1 Peter 5:8. 'Put on the whole
armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.'
Ephesians 6:11.
"From the days of Adam to our own time, our great enemy has been
exercising his power to oppress and destroy. He is now preparing for his last
campaign against the church. All who seek to follow Jesus will be brought
into conflict with this relentless foe. The more nearly the Christian imitates
the divine Pattern, the more surely will he make himself a mark for the
attacks of Satan."- The Great Controversy, p. 510.

GOOD BEHAVIOR January 22

1. What are God's children on earth? Against what must they espe-
cially be on their guard? Hebrews 11:13 (last part); 1 Peter 2:11.

"The apostle Peter understood the relation between the mind and the
body." -Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 166.
"Every perverted appetite becomes a warring lust. Appetite indulged
to the injury of physical strength causes disease of the soul. The lust which
the apostle mentions is not confined to the violation of the seventh com-
mandment, but every indulgence of the taste which lessens physical vigor is
a warring lust. The apostle declares that he who would gain special victories
and make higher attainments in righteousness must be 'temperate in all
things.' Temperance in eating and drinking at our tables, as well as the exer-
cise of temperance in every other respect, is essential if we would overcome
as Christ overcame. God has given us light, not to be treated indifferently,
but to be our guide and help."-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 215.
2. How should Christians conduct themselves before the world?
Philippians 3:20; 1 Peter 2:12; Matthew 5:16.

"Truthfulness and frankness should be ever cherished by all who claim

to be followers of Christ. God and the right should be the motto. Deal hon-
estly and righteously in this present evil world. Some will be honest when
they see that honesty will not endanger their worldly interests, but all who
act from this principle will have their names blotted out of the book of life."

1 Peter 2:13-16; Romans 13:1,2.

"Weare to recognize human government as an ordinance of divine

appointment, and teach obedience to it as a sacred duty, within its legitimate

CARE, TACT, AND RESPECT January 24

5. What duty should we perform conscientiously and honestly?

Romans 13:5-7; Matthew 22:16-21. What special admonition
does the Spirit of Prophecy give in this regard?

"It is not wise to find fault continually with what is done by the rulers of
government. It is not our work to attack individuals or institutions. We
should exercise great care lest we be understood as putting ourselves in
opposition to the civil authorities. It is true that our warfare is aggressive,
but our weapons are to be those found in a plain 'Thus saith the Lord.' Our
work is to prepare a people to stand in the great day of God. We should not
be turned aside to lines that will encourage controversy or arouse antag-
onism in those not of our faith.
"We should not work in a manner that will mark us out as seeming to
advocate treason. We should weed out from our writings and utterances
every expression that, taken by itself, could be so misrepresented as to make
it appear antagonistic to law and order: Everything should be carefully con-
sidered, lest we place ourselves on record as encouraging disloyalty to our
country and its laws. We are not required to defy authorities. There will
come a time when, because of our advocacy of Bible truth, we shall be
treated as traitors; but let not this time be hastened by unadvised move-
ments that stir up animosity and strife."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 394.

6. What is our duty in cases where the authorities and their legislation
conflict with God and His Law? What examples are recorded in
Scripture? Daniel 3:4-6, 16-18; 6:7-11; Acts 4:18-20; 5:27-29.

"It is our duty in every case to obey the laws of our land, unless they
conflict with the higher law which God spoke with an audible voice from
Sinai, and afterward engraved on stone with His own finger. 'I will put My
laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a
God, and they shall be to Me a people.' He who has God's law written in the
heart will obey God rather than men, and will sooner disobey all men than

-18 -
deviate in the least from the commandment of God. God's people, taught by
the inspiration of truth, and led by a good conscience to live by every word of
God, will take His law, written in their hearts, as the only authority which
they can acknowledge or consent to obey. The wisdom and authority of the
divine law are supreme."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 361.
"When [the claims of earthly governments] conflict with the claims of
God, we must obey God rather than men. God's word must be recognized as
above all human legislation. A 'Thus saith the Lord' is not to be set aside for
a 'Thus saith the church' or a 'Thus saith the state.' The crown of Christ is
to be lifted above the diadems of earthly potentates." - The Acts of the Apostles,
p.69.

mandment of the Lord will they obey by doing so? Matthew
5:43-45.

"To be kind to the unthankful and to the evil, to do good hoping for
nothing again, is the insignia of the royalty of heaven, the sure token by
which the children of the Highest reveal their high estate."- Thoughts From
the Mount of Blessing, p. 75.

8. In what words can our duty to God, to our brethren, to worldly

authorities, and to all people, be summarized? 1 Peter 2:17.

"The characteristics most needful to be cherished by God's command-

ment-keeping people are patience and long-suffering, peace and love."-

CHRIST OUR EXAMPLE January 26

9. What advice of the apostle is given to all who in their daily work are
subject to various types of superiors? 1 Peter 2:18-20.

"We cannot afford to let our spirits chafe over any real or supposed
wrong done to ourselves. Self is the enemy we most need to fear. ... We
should not allow our feelings to be easily wounded. We are to live, not to
guard our feelings or our reputation, but to save souls. As we become inter-
ested in the salvation of souls we cease to mind the little differences that so
often arise in our association with one another. Whatever others may
think of us or do to us, it need not disturb our oneness with Christ, the
fellowship of the Spirit."- The Ministry of Healing, p. 485.

10. What example did Christ give with regard to this question? Of
whom should we continually be aware? 1 Peter 2:21-25.

-19 -
"[Christ] stirred up no strife, He resented no personal injuries, but met
with meek submission the insults, the false accusations, and the cruel
scourging of those who hated Him and condemned Him to death. Christ is
our example. His life is a practical illustration of His divine teachings. His
character is a living exhibition of the way to do good and overcome evil."-
Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 139.
"We may learn the lessons of meekness and lowliness of mind as we go
up to Mount Calvary, and, looking upon the cross, see our Saviour in agony,
the Son of God dying, the Just for the unjust. Behold Him who could sum-
mon legions of angels to His assistance with one word, a subject of jest and
merriment, of reviling and hatred. He gives Himself a sacrifice for sin.
When reviled, He threatened not; when falsely accused, He opened not His
mouth. He prays on the cross for His murderers. He is dying for them. He is
paying an infinite price for everyone of them. He would not lose one whom
He has purchased at so great cost. He gives Himself to be smitten and
scourged without a murmur. And this uncomplaining victim is the Son of
God. His throne is from everlasting, and His kingdom shall have no
end.... Look, 0 look upon the cross of Calvary; behold the royal victim suf-
fering on your account. ...
"The Son of God was rejected and despised for our sakes. Can you, in
full view of the cross, beholding by the eye of faith the sufferings of Christ,
tell your tale of woe, your trials? Can you nurse revenge of your enemies in
your heart while the prayer of Christ comes from His pale and quivering lips
for His revilers, His murderers-'Father, forgive them; for they know not
what they do'? "- That I May Know Him, p. 65.

"The inward adorning of a meek and quiet spirit is priceless. In the life
of the true Christian the outward adorning is always in harmony with the
inward peace and holiness....
"No outward adorning can compare in value or loveliness with that
'meek and quiet spirit,' the 'fine linen, white and clean' (Revelation 19:14),
which all the holy ones of earth will wear. This apparel will make them beau-
tiful and beloved here, and will hereafter be their badge of admission to the
palace of the King."- The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 523, 524.
2. How should Christian parents and children relate to one another?
Ephesians 6:1-4.

"Happy are the parents whose lives are a true reflection of the divine,
so that the promises and commands of God awaken in the child gratitude and
reverence; the parents whose tenderness and justice and long-suffering
interpret to the child the love and justice and long-suffering of God; and who,

3. What characteristics should we be cultivating as brethren and
sisters in Christ? 1 Peter 3:8-12; Ephesians 4:32; Philippians 2:1-4.

"When the right way is so plainly marked out, why do not the professed
people of God walk in it? Why do they not study and pray and labor earnestly

- 21-
to be of one mind? Why do they not seek to cherish compassion for one
another, to love as brethren, instead of rendering evil for evil and railing for
railing? Who does not love life and desire good days? yet how few comply
with the conditions, to refrain the tongue from evil and the lips from speak-
ing guile. Few are willing to follow the Saviour's example of meekness and
humility. Many ask the Lord to humble them, but are unwilling to submit to
the needful discipline. When the test comes, when trials and even annoy-
ances occur, the heart rebels, and the tongue utters words that are like
poisoned arrows or blasting hail."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 176.
"Grace and peace rest upon those who refuse to join in the strife of
tongues. When vendors of scandal are passing from family to family, those
who fear God will be chaste keepers at home.... If our brethren and sisters
would become missionaries for God, visiting the sick and afflicted, and
laboring patiently and kindly for the erring -in short, if they would copy the
Pattern-the church would have prosperity in all her borders." -Ibid.

4. How should we be preparing for the challenges soon to confront us

from society? 1 Peter 3:13-17; Proverbs 15:28 (first part); 2 Tim-
othy 2:15.

"When for Christ's sake we are called to pass through trials that are of
a humiliating nature, if we have the mind of Christ we shall suffer them with
meekness, not resenting injury, or resisting evil. We shall manifest the spirit
that dwelt in Christ."-That I May Know Him, p. 104.
"Every position of truth taken by our people will bear the criticism of
the greatest minds; the highest of the world's great men will be brought in
contact with truth, and therefore every position we take should be critically
examined and tested by the Scriptures. Now we seem to be unnoticed, but
this will not always be. Movements are at work to bring us to the front, and
if our theories of truth can be picked to pieces by historians or the world's
greatest men, it will be done.
"We must individually know for. ourselves what is truth, and be pre-
pared to give a reason of the hope that we have with meekness and fear, not
in a proud, boasting, self-sufficiency, but with the spirit of Christ. We are
nearing the time when we shall stand individually alone to answer for our
belief." -Evangelism, p. 69.

spoke to the inhabitants of the old world in messages of warning, reproof,

"As the waters descended upon the earth, and one after another was
drowning, [the ungodly] beheld that ark, of which they had made so much
sport, riding safely upon the waters, preserving the faithful Noah and His
family. So I saw that the people of God, who had faithfully warned the world
of His coming wrath, would be delivered. God would not suffer the wicked
to destroy those who were expecting translation and who would not bow to
the decree of the beast or receive his mark."-Early Writings, p. 284.
"In baptism we are given to the Lord as a vessel to be used. Baptism is
a most solemn renunciation of the world. Self is by profession dead to a life
of sin. The waters cover the candidate, and in the presence of the whole
heavenly universe the mutual pledge is made. In the name of the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit, man is laid in his watery grave, buried with Christ
in baptism, and raised from the water to live the new life of loyalty to God."

"Sound an alarm through the land. Tell the people that the day of the
Lord is near, and hasteth greatly. Let none be left unwarned....
"We have no time to lose. The powers of darkness are working with

8. What are some distinctive qualities of true love? 1 Peter 4:8 (last
part)-II; 1 Corinthians 13:4, 5; James 5:19, 20; Hebrews 13:2.

"The love that suffers long and is kind will not magnify an indiscretion
into an unpardonable offense, neither will it make capital of others' misdo-
ings. The Scriptures plainly teach that the erring are to be treated with
forbearance and consideration. If the right course is followed, the apparently
obdurate heart may be won to Christ. The love of Jesus covers a multitude of
sins. His grace never leads to the exposing of another's wrongs unless it is a
positive necessity." -Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 267.
"Brethren and sisters, invite to your homes those who are in need of

9. How should we respond to persecution? 1 Peter 4:4, 14-16, 19.

"If we can bear persecution for His dear name's sake, His love becomes
a ruling power in our hearts, for we have the assurance that nothing can
separate us from the love of Christ. Never is the tempest-tried soul more
dearly loved by his Saviour than when he is suffering reproach for the truth's
sake. When for the truth's sake the believer stands at the bar of unrighteous
tribunals, Christ stands by his side. All the reproaches that fall upon the
human believer fall upon Christ in the person of His saints. 'I will love him,'
said Christ, 'and will manifest myself to him' (John 14:21). Christ is con-
demned over again in the person of His believing disciples. When for the
truth's sake the believer is incarcerated in prison walls, Christ manifests
Himself to him and ravishes his heart with His love. When he suffers death for
the sake of Christ, Christ says to him, They may kill the body, but they cannot
hurt the soul. 'Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world' (John 16:33)."

1. What great responsibility has been placed on the elders (ministers,

pastors) of the church? To what is the church compared? 1 Peter
5:1, 2; Acts 20:28. What attitude should every servant of Christ
manifest? 1 Timothy 4:16.

"Those who labor in this cause are bearing to the world the most ele-
vated truth that was ever committed to mortals."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 446.
"I never realized more than I do today the exalted character of the
work, its sacredness and holiness, and the importance of our being fitted for
it. I see the need in myself. I must have a new fitting up, a holy unction, or I
cannot go any further to instruct others. I must know that I am walking with
God. I must know that I understand the mystery of godliness. I must know
that the grace of God is in my own heart, that my own life is in accordance
with His will, that I am walking in His footsteps. Then my words will be true
and my actions right." -Ibid., vol. 2, p. 618.

2. What great danger exists for those who receive office and position?
What admonition did Jesus give His disciples with regard to this
danger? 1 Peter 5:3 (first part); Mark 10:42-45.

"Let those who occupy positions of trust rid themselves of the unmer-
ciful spirit which so greatly offends God. Justice and judgment are the habi-

tation of His throne. Let no one suppose that God has given to men the power
of ruling their fellowmen. He will accept the service of no man who hurts
and discourages Christ's heritage. Now is the time for every man to examine
himself, to prove himself, that he may see whether he is in the faith. Investi-
gate closely the motives which prompt you to action. We are engaged in the
work of the Most High. Let us not weave into the web of our work one

preach? 1 Peter 5:3 (last part); Titus 2:4; 1 Timothy 4: 12.

"The Lord Jesus loves His heritage; and if men will not think it their
special prerogative to prescribe rules for their fellow laborers, but will bring

4. What could the apostle Paul recommend to the believers? What is

the only way in which a preacher can do good work in the churches?
1 Corinthians 11:1; Philippians 3:17.

"Human devices, human plans, and human counsels will be without

power. Only in Christ Jesus will the church near the period of Christ's com-

break down self-erected barriers, and will cause to cease the feeling that 'I
am holier than thou.' There will be a humble spirit with all, more faith and
love; self will not be exalted.... Christ's spirit, Christ's example, will be
exemplified in His people. We shall follow more closely the ways and works
of Jesus.... The love of Jesus will pervade our hearts."-That I May Know

FALSE SHEPHERDS February 7

5. What do false shepherds do? What is their main concern with

regard to Christ's flock? Ezekiel 34:2, 3. What holy duty do they ne-
glect? Ezekiel 34:4.

6. What words of judgment will be pronounced against every false

shepherd? Jeremiah 23:1,2; Ezekiel 34:10.

- 26-
"Upon those who have taken upon them the work of shepherds of the
flock, will be visited the heaviest judgments, because they have presented to
the people fables instead of truth.... Church members, who have seen the
light and been convicted, but who have trusted the salvation of their souls to
the minister, will learn in the day of God that no other soul can pay the ran-
som for their transgression. A terrible cry will be raised, 'I am lost, eternally
lost.' Men will feel as though they could rend in pieces the ministers who
have preached falsehoods and condemned the truth. The pure truth for this
time requires a reformation in the life, but they separate themselves from
the love of the truth, and of them it can be said, '0 Israel, thou hast destroyed
thyself.' "-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1157.

GREAT CARE COMMANDED February 8

7. Against what dangers should the church especially guard? What

type of men are the only ones that may be considered for leading
positions in God's work? Exodus 18:21; 1 Timothy 3:8-10.

"The Lord's work must be carried forward without guile, hypocrisy, or

covetousness."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 341.

8. What requirements are necessary for all, especially those ordained

to be workers in the cause of God? Titus 1:5-9; 1 Timothy 3:2-7.

"There is need of men of faith, who will not only preach, but will
minister to the people. Men are needed who walk daily with God, who have a
living connection with heaven, whose words have power to bring conviction
to hearts." -Gospel Workers, p. 33.
"Men should not be encouraged to go into the field as ministers without
unmistakable evidence that God has called them. The Lord will not entrust
the burden of His flock to unqualified individuals. Those whom God calls
must be men of deep experience, tried and proved, men of sound judgment,
men who will dare to reprove sin in the spirit of meekness, men who under-
stand how to feed the flock. God knows the heart, and He knows whom to
select."- Ibid., p. 437.

GOD NEVER FORSAKES HIS FLOCK February 9

9. What great distinction does Christ make between a true and a false
shepherd? What is a false shepherd also called? John 10:12, 13.

"Jesus calls Himself the 'Good Shepherd.' He does this in contrast with
those who occupy positions of trust in connection with the church, but who
have no right to these places, because they put a wrong mold upon the work.
What is natural will appear.

- 27-
"Compare the Good Shepherd, who gave His life for His sheep, with
those who are filled with self-esteem, puffed up, dictatorial, loving to rule in
the church. The prophets have specified Christ's attributes. They foretold
Him as a gentle Shepherd, who would carry the lambs in His bosom. There
are others pointed out by prophecy, who have accepted the position of
leaders and religious instructors, whom the Word of God rebukes for their
neglect, in their ignorance, to do the work which they should have been
doing in their places of responsibility."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 7, p. 915.

10. Will the Lord ever leave His flock? What will He do, if He sees that
there are no true shepherds? Ezekiel 34:11, 12, 15, 16.

"We have been inclined to think that where there are no faithful
ministers there can be no true Christians, but this is not the case. God has
promised that where the shepherds are not true He will take charge of the
flock Himself. God has never made the flock wholly dependent upon human
instrumentalities."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 80.

Partakers of the Divine Nature

"In the second letter addressed by Peter to those who had obtained 'like
precious faith' with himself, the apostle sets forth the divine plan for the
development of Christian character."-The Acts of the Apostles, p. 529.

KEY TEXT: "For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that
ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of
our Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 1:8).

D Sunday
A PRECIOUS PRIVILEGE February 12

1. How does the apostle Peter introduce his second epistle? To whom
were his words addressed, and to whom do they still apply today?
2 Peter 1:1, 2.

"These precious words are spoken to those who have obtained like
precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour
Jesus Christ. In order to realize the greatness of the promise, we must know
by experimental knowledge who is back of the promise."- Testimonies to
Ministers, p. 258.
"What a grand theme this is for contemplation-the righteousness of
God and our Saviour Jesus Christ! Contemplating Christ and His righteous-
ness leaves no room for self-righteousness, for the glorifying of self. In this
chapter [2 Peter 1] there is no standstill. There is continual advancement in
every stage in the knowledge of Christ. Through the knowledge of Christ is
life eternal."- That I May Know Him, p. 159.

2. What have we been given as a result of our acceptance of God and

Jesus Christ? What great privilege has been granted us? 2 Peter 1:3;
Hebrews 3:1.

"God has called His people to glory and virtue, and these will be
manifest in the lives of all who are truly connected with Him. Having
become partakers of the heavenly gift, they are to go on unto perfection,
being 'kept by the power of God through faith.' 1 Peter 1:5. It is the glory of
God to give His virtue to His children. He desires to see men and women
reaching the highest standard; and when by faith they lay hold of the power

- 29-
of Christ, when they plead His unfailing promises, and claim them as their
own, when with an importunity that will not be denied they seek for the
power of the Holy Spirit, they will be made complete in Him."- The Acts of
the Apostles, p. 530.

D Monday
PROGRESS STEP BY STEP February 13

3. Under what conditions will we reach the standard to which we have

been called, and become partakers of the divine nature? 2 Peter
1:4; Galatians 5:24; Titus 2:11, 12.

4. Is it possible to become perfect in a few days? What is therefore

essential? Ephesians 4:15; Colossians 1:11.

"The work of transformation from unholiness to holiness is a con-

tinuous one. Day by day God labors for man's sanctification, and man is to
cooperate with Him, putting forth persevering efforts in the cultivation of
right habits. He is to add grace to grace; and as he thus works on the plan of
addition, God works for him on the plan of multiplication." - The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 532.

D Tuesday
THE FOUNDATION AND SPRINGBOARD February 14

5. What basic step is the first condition for progress in the Christian
life? Hebrews 11:6.

"Faith is the first round in the ladder of advancement. Without faith it

is impossible to please God. But many stop on this round and never ascend
higher. They seem to think that when they have professed Christ, when
their names are on the church record, their work is completed. Faith is
essential; but the Inspired Word says, 'Add to your faith, virtue.' Those who
are seeking for eternal life and a home in the kingdom of God must lay for
their character building the foundation of virtue. Jesus must be the chief cor-
nerstone."-My Life Today, p. 96.

6. What qualities will genuine faith produce and develop in our lives?
2 Peter 1:5-7.

"The apostle presents before the believers the ladder of Christian pro-
gress, every step of which represents advancement in the knowledge of God,
and in the climbing of which there is to be no standstill. Faith, virtue, knowl- .
edge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity are
the rounds of the ladder. We are saved by climbing round after round, mount-
ing step after step, to the height of Christ's ideal for us. Thus He is made
unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption."-
The Acts of the Apostles, p. 530.

VIRTUE February 15

7. Name some Christian virtues that genuine faith will develop in us.
How did Christ exemplify these virtues? Colossians 3: 12.

"Having received the faith of the gospel, the next work of the believer is
to add to his character virtue, and thus cleanse the heart and prepare the mind
for the reception of the knowledge of God."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 530.
"Our Redeemer met insult and mockery with uncomplaining silence.
All the cruel taunts of the murderous throng who exulted in His humiliation
and trial in the judgment hall could not bring from Him one look or word of
resentment or impatience. He was the Majesty of heaven, and in His pure
breast there dwelt no room for the spirit of retaliation, but only for pity and
love."-That I May Know Him, p. 139.

8. What additional virtues does Christ reveal as being equally neces-

sary for victory in the fight of faith? 1 Corinthians 16:13; Joshua
1:9.

"Christian life is more than many take it to be. It does not consist wholly
in gentleness, patience, meekness, and kindliness. These graces are essen-
tial; but there is need also of courage, force, energy, and perseverance. The
path that Christ marks out is a narrow, self-denying path....
"Some who engage in missionary service are weak, nerveless, spirit-
less, easily discouraged. They lack push. They have not those positive traits
of character that give power to do something-the spirit and energy that kin-
dle enthusiasm. Those who would win success must be courageous and
hopeful. They should cultivate not only the passive but the active virtues.
While they are to give the soft answer that turns away wrath, they must
possess the courage of a hero to resist evil. With the charity that endures all
things, they need the force of character that will make their influence a
positive power."- The Ministry of Healing, pp. 497, 498.

KNOWLEDGE February 16

9. From whom does all wisdom and knowledge proceed? What is the
greatest knowledge a man can gain? Proverbs 2:6; Colossians 2:2,
3; Jeremiah 9:23, 24.

"In a knowledge of God all true knowledge and real development have
their source. Wherever we turn, in the physical, the mental, or the spiritual
realm; in whatever we behold, apart from the blight of sin, this knowledge is
revealed. Whatever line of investigation we pursue, with a sincere purpose
to arrive at truth, we are brought in touch with the unseen, mighty Intel-
ligence that is working in and through all. The mind of man is brought into

- 31-
communion with the mind of God, the finite with the Infinite. The effect of
such communion on body and mind and soul is beyond estimate."-Education,
p. 14.
"This knowledge is the foundation of all true education and of all true
service. It is the only real safeguard against temptation; and it is this alone
that can make one like God in character. Through the knowledge of God and
of His Son Jesus Christ, are given to the believer 'all things that pertain unto
life and godliness.' "- The Acts oj the Apostles, pp. 530, 531.

10. What further knowledge does God intend for His people to gain?
Colossians 1:9; 1 Timothy 2:3,4. How is this knowledge obtained
and how can it be increased? Isaiah 34:16; John 5:39.

"The great storehouse of truth is the word of God-the written word,

the book of nature, and the book of experience in God's dealing with human
life. Here are the treasures from which Christ's workers are to draw."-
Christ's Object Lessons, p. 125.
"In proportion as the Lord has made them the depositaries of sacred
truth will be their desire that others shall receive the same blessing. And as
they make known the rich treasures of God's grace, more and still more of
the grace of Christ will be imparted to them. They will have the heart of a lit-
tle child in its simplicity and unreserved obedience. Their souls will pant
after holiness, and more and more of the treasures of truth and grace will be
revealed to them to be given to the world."-Ibid.

TEMPERANCE February 19

1. What is a prerequisite for the attainment and practice of patience?

2 Peter 1:6.

"An intemperate man never can be a patient man. Temperance comes

first, and then patience."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],
vol. 7, p. 944.

2. What is included in the concept of "temperance"? Luke 21:34;

Galatians 5:19, 21, 24. What advice of the apostle should we take
to heart? 1 Corinthians 9:24-27.

"In referring to these races as a figure of the Christian warfare, Paul

emphasized the preparation necessary to the success of the contestants in
the race-the preliminary discipline, the abstemious diet, the necessity for
temperance. 'Every man that striveth for the mastery,' he declared, 'is
temperate in all things.' The runners put aside every indulgence that would
tend to weaken the physical powers.... How much more important that the
Christian, whose eternal interests are at stake, bring appetite and passion
under subjection to reason and the will of God! Never must he allow his
attention to be diverted by amusements, luxuries, or ease. All his habits and
passions must be brought under the strictest discipline. Reason, enlightened
by the teachings of God's word and guided by His Spirit, must hold the reins
of control."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 311.

PATIENCE February 20

3. What virtue receives particular attention in the Holy Scriptures?

Lamentations 3:26; Luke 21:9. Who will help us obtain this virtue?
Hebrews 12:1 (last part), 2.

"Many become the sport of the enemy, because when temptation

comes, they do not rest in Jesus, but worry themselves out of His arms....
We make failures in our little, daily difficulties, and allow them to irritate
and vex us; we fall under them, and so make stumbling blocks for ourselves
and others. But blessings of the greatest importance are to result from the
patient endurance of these daily vexations, for we are to gain strength to
bear greater difficulties."- That I May Know Him, p. 139.
"Hold firmly to the One who has all power in heaven and in earth.
Though you so often fail to reveal patience and calmness, do not give up the
struggle. Resolve again, this time more firmly, to be patient under every
provocation. And never take your eyes off your divine Example." -Messages
to Young People, p. 136.

4. In which time is the virtue of patience particularly necessary?

Hebrews 10:36,37; James 5:7, 8; Romans 12:12. What special char-
acteristic will be the hallmark of the people gathered by the three
angels' messages at the end of time? Revelation 14:12 (first part).

"Fellow pilgrim, we are still amid the shadows and turmoil of earthly
activities; but soon our Saviour is to appear to bring deliverance and rest.
Let us by faith behold the blessed hereafter as pictured by the hand of God.
He who died for the sins of the world is opening wide the gates of Paradise to
all who believe on Him. Soon the battle will have been fought, the victory
won." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 731, 732.

GODLINESS February 21

5. What follows after the believer has attained patience through

temperance? What promise is linked to this virtue? 2 Peter 1:6 (last
part); 1 Timothy 4:7 (last part), 8.

"The Spirit of God is continually impressing the minds of men to seek

for those things which alone will give peace and rest-the higher, holier joys
of heaven. Christ, the Lord of life and glory, gave His life to redeem man
from Satan's power. Our Saviour is constantly at work, through influences
seen and unseen, to attract the minds of men from the unsatisfying pleasures
of this life to the priceless treasure which may be theirs in the immortal
future ....
"God enjoins upon all His followers to bear a living testimony in unmis-
takable language by their conduct, their dress and conversation, in all the

- 34-
pursuits of life, that the power of true godliness is profitable to all in this life
and in the life to come; that this alone can satisfy the soul of the receiver."-
Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 580, 581.

6. What wonderful prophecy is soon to be fulfilled in the remnant?

How can we prepare ourselves for this time? Acts 3:19-21.

"Before the final visitation of God's judgments upon the earth there will
be among the people of the Lord such a revival of primitive godliness as has
not been witnessed since apostolic times. The Spirit and power of God will
be poured out upon His children."- The Great Controversy, p. 464.

BROTHERLY KINDNESS AND CHARITY February 22
7. What is said about brotherly love, and with which forceful words
did Jesus impress the disciples' minds with the need for this love?
Romans 12:10; Hebrews 13:1; John 13:34, 35. For what is broth-
erly love a prerequisite? 1 John 4:12,20.

"In the church of God today brotherly love is sadly lacking. Many who
profess to love the Saviour do not love one another. Unbelievers are watch-
ing to see if the faith of professed Christians is exerting a sanctifying influ-
ence upon their lives; and they are quick to discern the defects in character,
the inconsistencies in action. Let Christians not make it possible for the
enemy to point to them and say, Behold how these people, standing under
the banner of Christ, hate one another. Christians are all members of one
family, all children of the same heavenly Father, with the same blessed hope
of immortality. Very close and tender should be the tie that binds them
together."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 550.

8. Which virtue crowns all the others? 2 Peter 1:7; 1 Corinthians

13:13.

"Supreme love for God and unselfish love for one another-this is the
best gift that our heavenly Father can bestow. This love is not an impulse,
but a divine principle, a permanent power. The unconsecrated heart cannot
originate or produce it. Only in the heart where Jesus reigns is it found. 'We
love Him, because He first loved us.' In the heart renewed by divine grace,
love is the ruling principle of action. It modifies the character, governs the
impulses, controls the passions, and ennobles the affections. This love,
cherished in the soul, sweetens the life and sheds a refining influence on all
around."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 551.

D Thursday
GENERAL LOVE February 23

9. Which godly commandment encompasses both "brotherly" and

"general, neighborly" love? Leviticus 19:18 (second part); Mat-
thew 22:39; 5:46, 47.

- 35-
"When love fills the heart, it will flow out to others, not because of
favors received from them, but because love is the principle of action. Love
modifies the character, governs the impulses, subdues enmity, and ennobles
the affections. This love is as broad as the universe, and is in harmony with
that of the angel workers. Cherished in the heart, it sweetens the entire life
and sheds its blessing upon all around."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing,
p.38.

10. What is the highest level of neighborly love? Who was a perfect
example of this? Matthew 5:43-45; Luke 23:33, 34. To what can
loving your enemies contribute? Romans 12:20.

"Weare to love our enemies with the same love that Christ manifested
toward His enemies by giving His life to save them. Many may say, 'This is
a hard commandment; for I want to keep just as far as I can from my
enemies.' But acting in accordance with your own inclination would not be
carrying out the principles that our Saviour has given. 'Do good,' He says,
'to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and
persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in
heaven: for He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and
sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.' This scripture illustrates one
phase of Christian perfection. While we were yet enemies of God, Christ
gave His life for us. We are to follow His example." -Medical Ministry, pp. 253,
254.
"Let us daily represent Christ's great love by loving our enemies, as
Christ loves them. If we would thus represent the grace of Christ, strong
feelings of hatred would be broken down and into many hearts genuine love
would be brought. Many more conversions than are now seen would
follow."-Ibid., p. 254.

BIBLICAL ELECTION February 26

1. What appeal did the apostle Peter make once more to the believers,
in view of the fact that he knew that his earthly life was soon to end?
2 Peter 1:10, 11.

"For many years Peter had been urging upon the believers the necessity
of a constant growth in grace and in a knowledge of the truth; and now,
knowing that soon he would be called to suffer martyrdom for his faith, he
once more drew attention to the precious privileges within the reach of
every believer. In the full assurance of his faith the aged disciple exhorted
his brethren to steadfastness of purpose in the Christian life. [2 Peter 1:10,
11 quoted.] Precious assurance! Glorious is the hope before the believer as
he advances by faith toward the heights of Christian perfection!" - The Acts of
the Apostles, p. 533.

2. What did Paul say about the subject of call and election? Is our elec-
tion a guarantee that we will be saved? 2 Thessalonians 2: 13, 14.

"There is an election of individuals and a people, the only election found

in the word of God, where man is elected to be saved. Many have looked at
the end, thinking they were surely elected to have heavenly bliss; but this is
not the election the Bible reveals. Man is elected to work out his own salva-
tion with fear and trembling. He is elected to put on the armor, to fight the
good fight of faith. He is elected to use the means God has placed within his
reach to war against every unholy lust, while Satan is playing the game of
life for his soul. He is elected to watch unto prayer, to search the Scriptures,

- 37-
and to avoid entering into temptation. He is elected to have faith continually.
He is elected to be obedient to every word that proceedeth out of the mouth
of God, that he may be, not a hearer only, but a doer of the word. This is
Bible election."- Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 453, 454.

in the time of the first Christian church. Hebrews 9:23-28; 10:19-
23; Acts 10:34, 35; 11:2,3, 17, 18; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4.

IN OUR DAY February 28

5. Do we also have "present truth"? What is it called and where is it

found in the Bible? Revelation 14:6-11. From what deception must
we particularly guard ourselves? Colossians 2:8.

"Satan is working that the history of the Jewish nation may be repeated
in the experience of those who claim to believe present truth.... There are
persons ready to catch up every new idea. The prophecies of Daniel and the
Revelation are misinterpreted. These persons do not consider that the truth
has been set forth at the appointed time by the very men whom God was
leading to do this special work. These men followed on step by step in the
very fulfillment of prophecy, and those who have not had a personal expe-
rience in this work, are to take the Word of God and believe on 'their word'
who have been led by the Lord in the proclamation of the first, second, and
third angels' messages. These messages, received and acted upon, are doing
their work to prepare a people to stand in the great day of God. If we search
the Scriptures to confirm the truth God has given His servants for the world,
we shall be found proclaiming the first, second, and third angels' messages."
-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 111.

6. What particular point of truth is closely linked to the three angels'

messages and is a testing truth for this time? Exodus 20:8-11; Rev-
elation 11:19.

"Special truths have been adapted to the conditions of the generations

as they have existed. The present truth, which is a test to the people of this
generation, was not a test to the people of generations far back. ...

- 38-
"When the temple of God was opened in heaven, John saw in holy
vision a class of people whose attention was arrested and W:RO were looking
with reverential awe at the ark, which contained the law of God. The special
test upon the fourth commandment did not come until after the temple of
God was opened in heaven.
"Those who died before the light was given upon the law of God and
the claims of the fourth commandment were not guilty of the sin of violating
the seventh-day Sabbath....[God] has made provision that all may be holy
and happy if they choose. Sufficient light has been given to this generation,
that we may learn what our duties and privileges are, and enjoy the precious
and solemn truths in their simplicity and power."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 693.

witness will we give as a result? Psalm 34:8; 1 Peter 2:3; John 3:33;

"The apostle was well qualified to speak of the purposes of God con-
cerning the human race; for during the earthly ministry of Christ he had seen
and heard much that pertained to the kingdom of God....
"Yet convincing as was this evidence of the certainty of the believer's
hope, there was another still more convincing in the witness of prophecy,
through which the faith of all might be confirmed and securely anchored."-
The Acts of the Apostles, p. 534.

10. What are we told about the origin of the Scriptures and the word of
prophecy? 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:20,21. Relate the expe-
rience of Ellen White in regard to the prophetic gift she was given.

- 39-
"It is not the words of the Bible that are inspired, but the men that were
inspired. Inspiration acts not on the man's words or his expressions but on
the man himself, who, under the influence of the Holy Ghost, is imbued with
thoughts. But the words receive the impress of the individual mind. The
divine mind is diffused. The divine mind and will is combined with the
human mind and will; thus the utterances of the man are the word of God."
-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 21.
"Although I am as dependent upon the Spirit of the Lord in writing my
views as I am in receiving them, yet the words I employ in describing what I
have seen are my own, unless they be those spoken to me by an angel, which
I always enclose in marks of quotation."-Ibid., book 3, p. 49.
"I want every jot and tittle of my strength to reproduce the representa-
tions the Lord has given me, and to make them as vivid as possible while I
can do so.
"The goodness of the Lord to me is very great. I praise His name that
my mind is clear on Bible subjects. The Spirit of God works upon my mind
and gives me appropriate words with which to express the truth."-Ibid.,
p.51.
"I am exceedingly anxious to use words that will not give anyone a
chance to sustain erroneous sentiments. I must use words that will not be
misconstrued and made to mean the opposite of that which they were
designed to mean."-Ibid., p. 52.

Lesson 10 Sabbath, March 11, 1995

Characteristics of Deceivers

"While exalting the 'sure word of prophecy' as a safe guide in times of

peril, the apostle solemnly warned the church against the torch of false
prophecy, which would be uplifted by 'false teachers,' who would privily
bring in 'damnable heresies, even denying the Lord.' "-The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 535.

KEY TEXT: "And many false prophets shall arise, and shall deceive many"
(Matthew 24:11).

WARNING AGAINST FALSE PROPHETS D Sunday

AND TEACHERS March 5

1. How did Peter warn the believers against false prophets and teach-
ers? What had Paul predicted about this danger? 2 Peter 2:1-3;
Acts 20:29,30.

"Never" never was there a time when the truth will suffer more from
being misrepresented, belittled, demerited through the perverse disputings
of men than in these last days. Men have brought themselves in with their
heterogeneous mass of heresies which they represent as oracles for the peo-
ple. The people are charmed with some strange, new thing, and a're not wise
in experience to discern the character of ideas that men may frame up as
something. But to call it something of great consequence and tie it to the
oracles of God does not make it truth. Oh, how this rebukes the low standard
of piety in the churches."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],
vol. 6, p, 1064.
"Much so-called Christianity passes for genuine, faithful soundness,
but it is because those who profess it have no persecution to endure for the
truth's sake. When the day comes when the law of God is made void, and the
church is sifted by the fiery trials that are to try all that live upon the earth, a
great proportion of those who are supposed to be genuine will give heed to
seducing spirits, and will turn traitors and betray sacred trusts."-Ibid.,
p. 1065.

2. How did Christ warn the believers? Matthew 24:4, 5, 11. What will
these false prophets be able to do, and who could even be in danger?
Matthew 24:23, 24.

- 41-
"After the truth has been proclaimed as a witness to all nations, every
conceivable power of evil will be set in operation, and minds will be confused
by many voices crying, 'Lo, here is Christ; 10, He is there. This is the truth, I
have the message from God, He has sent me with great light.' Then there
will be a removing of the landmarks, and an attempt to tear down the pillars
of our faith ....
"Satan and his angels are wide awake and intensely active, working
with energy and perseverance through human instrumentalities to bring
about his purpose of obliterating from the minds of men the knowledge of
God. But while Satan works with his lying wonders, the time will be fulfilled
foretold in the Revelation, and the mighty angel that shall lighten the earth
with his glory will proclaim the fall of Babylon, and call upon God's people to
forsake her."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 985.

o Monday
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DECEIVERS March 6
3. What does Peter say about the character of those who prowl
around, trying to lead souls astray? What sins are often evident in
their lives? 2 Peter 2:12-14. How does Paul describe this class of
people? 2 Timothy 3:5-7; Titus 1:16.

"The ones here referred to are not those who openly claim to have no
faith in Christ, but those who profess to believe the truth and by their vileness
of character bring a reproach upon it, causing it to be evil spoken of."-
Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 145.
"There are many who possess brilliant talents who wickedly devote
them to the service of Satan. What warning can I give to a people who pro-
fess to have come out from the world and to have left its works of darkness?
to a people whom God has made the repositories of His law, but who, like
the pretentious fig tree, flaunt their apparently flourishing branches in the
very face of the Almighty, yet bear no fruit to the glory of God? Many of
them cherish impure thoughts, unholy imaginations, unsanctified desires,
and base passions. God hates the fruit borne upon such a tree. Angels, pure
and holy, look upon the course of such with abhorrence, while Satan exults."
-Ibid., p. 146.

4. How should God's children react when they come into contact with
such deceivers? Ephesians 5:6-12.

"As those who practice these defiling sins are steadily increasing in the
world and would intrude themselves into our churches, I warn you to give no
place to them. Turn from the seducer. Though a professed follower of
Christ, he is Satan in the form of man; he has borrowed the livery of heaven
that he may the better serve his master. ...
"Choose poverty, reproach, separation from friends, or any suffering
rather than to defile the soul with sin. Death before dishonor or the trans-
gression of God's law should be the motto of every Christian."-Testimonies,
vol. 5, pp. 146, 147.

o Tuesday
WATERLESS WELLS March 7

5. With which apostate Old Testament prophet are these heretics

compared? What way have they forsaken? 2 Peter 2:15.

"At the time Balak sent messengers for him [Balaam], he was double-
minded, pursuing a course to gain and retain the favor and honor of the
enemies of the Lord, for the sake of rewards he received from them. At the
same time he was professing to be a prophet of God."- The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1116.
"Balaam loved the reward o~ unrighteousness. The sin of covetousness,
which God ranks with idolatry, he did not resist and overcome. Satan obtained
entire control of him through this one fault, which deteriorated his
character, and made him a time-server. He called God his master; but he did
not serve Him; he did not work the works of God."-Ibid.

6. How did Peter describe those who have followed the way of
Balaam? 2 Peter 2:17.
o Wednesday
SERVANTS OF CORRUPTION March 8

7. What deceptive arts are practiced by those who have yielded

themselves to Satan? 2 Peter 2:18, 19.

"There is always a bewitching power in heresies and in licentiousness.

The mind is so deluded that it cannot reason intelligently, and an illusion is
continually leading it from purity. The spiritual eyesight becomes blurred,
and persons of hitherto untainted morals become confused under the delu-
sive sophistry of those agents of Satan who profess to be messengers of
light. It is this delusion which gives these agents power. Should they come
out boldly and make their advances openly they would be repulsed without a
moment's hesitation; but they work first to gain sympathy and secure confi-
dence in themselves as holy, self-sacrificing men of God. As His special
messengers they then begin their artful work of drawing away souls from
the path of rectitude by attempting to make void the law of God."- Testi-
monies, vol. 5, pp. 142, 143.

8. What is the condition of those who once experienced the power of

the truth, but then forsook the way of righteousness? 2 Peter 2:20-
22. How did Christ illustrate this condition? Luke 11:24-26.

"The garnished house represents the self-righteous soul. Satan is

driven out by Christ. But he returned, in the hope of finding entrance. He
finds the house empty, swept, and garnished. Only self-righteousness is
abiding there ....
"Self-righteousness is a curse, a human embellishment, which Satan
uses for his glory. Those who garnish the soul with self-praise and flattery

- 43-
prepare the way for the seven other spirits more wicked than the first."

HOW CAN WE ESCAPE THE SNARE? March 9

9. By what standard are we told to test all teachings that come to us?
Isaiah 8:20. How can we recognize false prophets and teachers?
Matthew 7: 15-20.

10. What advice does the apostle give us, so that we do not fall prey to
wicked people? 2 Peter 3:17, 18 (first part); 1 Peter 5:7-9 (first
part).

"I speak to our people. If you draw close to Jesus and seek to adorn
your profession by a well-ordered life and godly conversation, your feet will
be kept from straying into forbidden paths. If you will only watch, continually
watch unto prayer, if you will do everything as if you were in the immediate
presence of God, you will be saved from yielding to temptation, and may
hope to be kept pure, spotless, and undefiled till the last. If you hold the
beginning of your confidence firm unto the end, your ways will be estab-
lished in God; and what grace has begun, glory will crown in the kingdom of
our God."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 148.

God's Justice
in Dealing With His Creatures
"Never fail to show that there is a marked difference between the one
who serves God and the one who serves Him not. God is love, but He
cannot excuse willful disregard for His commands.... Man's conduct
in this world decides his eternal destiny. As he has sown, so he must
reap."-The Ministry of Healing, p. 180.

GOD'S CHARACTER REVEALED March 12
1. How did God reveal Himself to Moses and at Sinai, and how did He
represent His own character? Exodus 34:6,7; 20:5 (second part), 6.
How can this be expressed in other words? 2 Peter 2:9; Psalm
145:20.

"The power and authority of the divine government will be employed to

put down rebellion; yet all the manifestations of retributive justice will be
. perfectly consistent with the character of God as a merciful, long-suffering,
benevolent being."- The Great Controversy, p. 541.
2. How is God's mercy and love most clearly expressed? John 3:16;
1 John 4:9. What is the clearest and most irrefutable evidence of
His justice? Matthew 27:46, 50.

"God has given in His word decisive evidence that He will punish the
transgressors of His law. Those who flatter themselves that He is too mer-
ciful to execute justice upon the sinner, have only to look to the cross of
Calvary. The death of the spotless Son of God testifies that 'the wages of sin
is death,' that every violation of God's law must receive its just retribution.
. . . All this sacrifice was made that sinners might be redeemed. In no other
way could man be freed from the penalty of sin. And every soul that refuses
to become a partaker of the atonement provided at such a cost must bear in
his own person the guilt and punishment of transgression."- The Great Con-
troversy, pp. 539, 540.

CAUSE AND EFFECT March 13

3. W~ich natural law is also valid for human life and is irrevocable?
Gahltians 6:7, 8; Romans 8: 13.

"God discerns the purposes of man and all his works. Every man will be
rewarded according as his -works have been, whether good or evil. That
which a man sows will he also reap. There will be no failure in the crop. The
harvest is sure and plentiful."- Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 300, 301.

4. When is the decision made regarding which harvest every person

shall reap? 2 Corinthians 5:10. How do the wages meted out differ?
Romans 2:5-11.-

"This is a two-edged sword which cuts both ways. This life and death
question is before the whole human race. The choice we make in this life will
be our choice through all eternity. We shall receive either eternal life or eter-
nal death. There is no middle ground, no second probation."- The SDA Bible
Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1112.

o Tuesday
EXAMPLES OF REWARD OR PUNISHMENT March 14

5. Which example does Peter give of God's justice in His dealings with
humanity? 2 Peter 2:5; Genesis 6:5-8; 7:1-4. What was the
underlying cause of the corruption of the antediluvian world?
Genesis 6:2, 3 (first part).

"The Spirit of God keeps evil under the control of conscience. When
man exalts himself above the influence of the Spirit, he reaps a harvest of
iniquity. Over such a man the Spirit has less and less influence to restrain
him from sowing seeds of disobedience. Warnings have less and less power
over hirp.. He gradually loses his fear of God. He sows to the flesh; he will
reap corruption. The harvest of the seed that he himself has sown, is ripen-
ing. He has a contempt for God's holy commandments. His heart of flesh
becomes a heart of stone. Resistance to truth confirms him in iniquity. It is
because men sowed seeds of evil, that lawlessness, crime, and violence
prevailed in the antediluvian world."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 6, p. 1112.

6. Give another example of God's justice. Explain God's purpose and

how, even in judgment, His mercy. was revealed. 2 Peter 2:6-8.

"In mercy to the world, God blotted out its wicked inhabitants in
Noah's time. In mercy He destroyed the corrupt dwellers in Sodom.
Through the deceptive power of Satan the workers of iniquity obtain sym-
pathy and admiration, and are thus constantly leading others to rebellion. It

-46-
was so in Cain's and in Noah's day, and in the time of Abraham and Lot; it is
so in our time. It is in mercy to the universe that God will finally destroy the
rejecters of His grace."- The Great Controversy, p. 543.

D Wednesday
EXAMPLES FROM THE HISTORY OF ISRAEL March 15

7. What event in Israel's history shows clearly that God distinguishes

between the faithful and the unfaithful? Numbers 14:21-24. What
kind of men are needed now?

"Caleb was faithful and steadfast. He was not boastful, he made no

parade of his merits and good deeds; but his influence was always on the side
of right. And what was his reward? ... While the cowards and murmurers
perished in the wilderness, faithful Caleb had a home in the promised
Canaan."- Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 303, 304.
"While the doubting ones talk of impossibilities, while they tremble at
the thought of high walls and strong giants, let the faithful Calebs, who have
'another spirit,' come to the front."-Ibid., p. 380.

8. What judgment was meted out to many in Israel who were guilty of
the sin of rebellion? Numbers 16:28-35; 17:10-13.

"Love no less than justice demanded that for [the sin of idolatry] judg-
ment should be inflicted. God is the guardian as well as the sovereign of His
people. He cuts off those who are determined upon rebellion, that they may
not lead others to ruin....
"It was the mercy of God that thousands should suffer, to prevent the
necessity of visiting judgments upon millions. In order to save the many, He
must punish the few.... It was necessary for the good of Israel, and also as
a lesson to all succeeding generations, that crime should be promptly punished.
And it was no less a mercy to the sinners themselves that they should be cut
short in their evil course. Had their life been spared, the same spirit that led
them to rebel against God would have been manifested in hatred and strife
among themselves, and they would eventually have destroyed one another.
It was in love to the world, in love to Israel, and even to the transgressors,
that crime was punished with swift and terrible severity." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, pp. 325, 326.
"God works by the manifestation of His Spirit to reprove and convict
the sinner; and if the Spirit's work is finally rejected, there is no more that
God can do for the soul. The last resource of divine mercy has been
employed. The transgressor has cut himself off from God, and sin has no
remedy to cure itself. There is no reserved power by which God can work to
convict and convert the sinner. 'Let him alone' (Hosea 4: 17) is the divine
command. Then 'there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain
fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the
adversaries.' "- Ibid., p. 405.

THE FINAL DESTRUCTION March 16

9. What is written in the Bible about the angels who have supported
Satan in his rebellion? 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6.

10. What will be the final end of Satan and the fallen angels together
with all Godless people? What distinction will again clearly appear?
Revelation 20:9, 10, 15; Malachi 4:1,2; Psalm 37:37,38.

"Like the waters of the Flood the fires of the great day declare God's
verdict that the wicked are incurable. They have no disposition to submit to
divine authority. Their will has been exercised in revolt; and when life is
ended, it is too late to turn the current of their thoughts in the opposite direc-
tion, too late to turn from transgression to obedience, from hatred to love."
- The Great Controversy, p. 543.
" 'The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through
Jesus Christ our Lord.' Romans 6:23. While life is the inheritance of the
righteous, death is the portion of the wicked." - Ibid., p. 544.

SCOFFERS IN THE LAST DAYS March 19

1. Of what did Peter remind the believers for the last time? What did
he enjoin on them? 2 Peter 3:1, 2.

"The memory is to be refreshed by Bible principles. The mind is to be

kept clear and pure that it may distinguish between good and evil." -Mind,
Character, and Personality, vol. 1, p. 328.

2. What did the apostle predict about a certain class of people? How
would they react to the teachings about the second coming of
Christ? 2 Peter 3:3, 4.

"Before the Lawgiver shall come to punish the disobedient, transgres-

sors are warned to repent, and return to their allegiance; but with the majority
these warnings will be in vain. Says the apostle Peter, 'There shall come in
the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is
the promise of His coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things con-
tinue as they were from the beginning.' 2 Peter 3:3,4. Do we not hear these
very words repeated, not merely by the openly ungodly, but by many who
occupy the pulpits of our land? 'There is no cause for alarm,' they cry.
'Before Christ shall come, all the world is to be converted, and righteousness
is to reign for a thousand years. Peace, peace! all things continue as they
were from the beginning. Let none be disturbed by the exciting message of
these alarmists.' But this doctrine of the millennium does not harmonize
with the teachings of Christ and His apostles." -Patriarchs and Prophets,

AS IN THE TIME OF NOAH March 20

3. In what ways are these people similar to the inhabitants of the

earth before the Flood? 2 Peter 3:5,6; Matthew 24:37-39.

"As the time of their probation was closing, the antediluvians gave them-
selves up to exciting amusements and festivities. Those who possessed influ-
ence and power were bent on keeping the minds of the people engrossed
with mirth and pleasure, lest any should be impressed by the last solemn
warning. Do we not see the same repeated in our day? While God's servants
are giving the message that the end of all things is at hand, the world is
absorbed in amusements and pleasure seeking. There is a constant round of
excitement that causes indifference to God and prevents the people from
being impressed by the truths which alone can save them from the coming
destruction." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 103.

4. What has been prophesied about the present heaven and today's
world? 2 Peter 3:7, 10; Isaiah 66:15, 16.

"In Noah's day philosophers declared that it was impossible for the
world to be destroyed by water; so now there are men of science who
endeavor to show that the world cannot be destroyed by fire-that this
would be inconsistent with the laws of nature. But the God of nature, the
Maker and Controller of her laws, can use the works of His hands to serve
His own purpose....
"When the reasoning of philosophy has banished the fear of God's
judgments; when religious teachers are pointing forward to long ages of
peace and prosperity, and the world are absorbed in their rounds of business
and pleasure, planting and building, feasting and merrymaking, rejecting
God's warnings and mocking His 'messengers-then it is that sudden
destruction cometh upon them, and they shall not escape." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, pp. 103, 104,

o Tuesday
THE PROMISE IS SURE March 21

5. Of what can we be sure, even if the fulfillment of the prophecy is

delayed? 2 Peter 3:8; Habakkuk 2:3.

"The fulfillment of God's promise may seem to be long delayed-for

'one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one
day' (2 Peter 3:8); it may appear to tarry; but at the appointed time 'it will
surely come, it will not tarry.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 170.

6. Why is the Lord still delaying His appearing? For whom is He show-
ing consideration? 2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4.

- 50-
"The long night of gloom is trying; but the morning is deferred in mercy,
because if the Master should come, so many would be found unready. God's
unwillingness to have His people perish has been the reason for so long
delay. But the coming of the morning to the faithful, and of the night to the
unfaithful, is right upon us."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 194.

o Wednesday
GET READY March 22
7. What is our most important duty in this time of delay and waiting?
2 Peter 3:11, 12; Matthew 26:41. What specific warning is given
especially to God's last-day remnant?

"1 saw that the remnant were not prepared for what is coming upon the
earth. Stupidity, like lethargy, seemed to hang upon the minds of most of
those who profess to believe that we are having the last message. My accom-
panying angel cried out with awful solemnity, 'Get ready! get ready! get
ready! for the fierce anger of the Lord is soon to come. His wrath is to be
poured out, unmixed with mercy, and ye are not ready. Rend the heart, and
not the garment. A great work must be done for the remnant. Many of them
are dwelling upon little trials.' Said the angel, 'Legions of evil angels are
around you, and are trying to press in their awful darkness, that ye may be
ensnared and taken. Ye suffer your minds to be diverted too readily from the
work of preparation and the all-important truths for these last days. And ye
dwell upon little trials and go into minute particulars of little difficulties to
explain them to the satisfaction of this one or that.' ... If pride and selfish-
ness were laid aside, five minutes would remove most difficulties."-Early
Writings, p. 119.

8. How should we be spending our waiting time? 2 Peter 3: 14; Luke

12:35-40; John 9:4. Why?

"Because we know not the exact time of His coming, we are commanded
to watch. 'Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when He cometh shall
find watching.' Luke 12:37. Those who watch for the Lord's coming are not
waiting in idle expectancy. The expectation of Christ's coming is to make
men fear the Lord, and fear His judgments upon transgression. It is to
awaken them to the great sin of rejecting His offers of mercy. Those who
are watching for the Lord are purifying their souls by obedience to the truth.
With vigilant watching they combine earnest working. Because they know
that the Lord is at the door, their zeal is quickened to cooperate with the
divine intelligences in working for the salvation of souls." - The Desire ofAges,
p.634.

THE GLORIOUS INHERITANCE March 23

9. What has been the hope of all true children of God since the begin-
ning of the world? Hebrews 11: 13-16. On what was the apostle
Peter's entire hope fixed, and what is to be our comfort and our
hope? 2 Peter 3:13; 1 Peter 1:3,4.

- 51-
"In the Bible the inheritance of the saved is called 'a country.' Hebrews
11:14-16. There the heavenly Shepherd leads His flock to fountains of living
waters. The tree of life yields its fruit every month, and the leaves of the tree
are for the service of the nations. There are ever-flowing streams, clear as
crystal, and beside them waving trees cast their shadows upon the paths pre-
pared for the ransomed of the Lord. There the wide-spreading plains swell
into hills of beauty, and the mountains of God rear their lofty summits. On
those peaceful plains, beside those living streams, God's people, so long
pilgrims and wanderers, shall find a home."- The Great Controversy, p. 675.

10. About what can we already be happy? 1 Corinthians 2:9; Revelation

21:1-7.

"This earth is the place of preparation for heaven. The time spent here
is the Christian's winter. Here the chilly winds of affliction blow upon us,
and the waves of trouble roll against us. But in the near future, when Christ
comes, sorrow and sighing will be forever ended. Then will be the
Christian's summer. All trials will be over, and there will be no more sick-
ness or death. 'God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall
be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying ... : for the former things are
passed away.' "-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7,

Special Project Offering
for Chapels and a Headquarters in Mozambique

The republic of Mozambique covers an area in east Africa of

771,125 square kilometers (309,494 square miles). For centuries it
was a Portuguese colony until gaining independence in 1975.
Mozambique has an extensive coastline 2,795 kilometers in length,
and is bordered by South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia,
Malawi, and Tanzania. The population is over 15 million, 48% of
whom adhere to traditional beliefs; 31% are Roman Catholic, 13%
are Muslims, and the remaining 8% are of other faiths.
In spite of being a land rich in natural resources, Mozambique
faces a situation of extreme poverty. Because of the prolonged civil
war which has lasted more than 15 years, the national economy is
ruined, making the population totally dependent on foreign
humanitarian aid. The worst drought of the age, which has ravaged
the African continent, has also affected Mozambique. Scores of per-
sons are dying of starvation daily.
Because of the chaotic state of the country, many people are
turning to Christianity with great fervor.
The SDA Reform Movement began its activities in Mozambique
a short time ago. Since our interview with the President of the Repub-
lic, Mr. Joaquim Chissano (February 1991), and the announcement of
our registration as an organization (May 1991), new souls from dif-
ferent parts of the country have accepted the message of reformation.
At the 16th General Conference Delegation Session in September
1991, we were officially recognized as a Mission.
To promote the progress of the work in Mozambique, we
urgently need to construct our headquarters in the capital, Maputo,
and to build two chapels, one in the south (Maputo) and the other in
the north (Nampula).
Without financial assistance from each Sabbath school student,
it will be impossible to complete these projects. We, therefore,
count on your generous offerings at the end of this quarter.
