FOREWORD
Rebellion is in the very air we breathe. The philosophy of pleasing one's
self seems to be the keynote of our age. In an era when coldhearted cynicism
and blatant, hardened iniquity are so prevalent, the old-fashioned quality of
"wide-eyed" innocence known in earlier days has now become nearly extinct.
The concept of reverence is a direct contrast to today's casual, self-
centered attitudes. Reverence is' defined as honor mixed with love and awe.
It implies a humble, childlike wonder which is very precious and rare now-
adays, even among the professed people of God.
The lessons for this quarter, entitled In the Presence of God, are designed
to strengthen and enhance our appreciation of the beautiful graces of rever-
ence and respect that should freely flow from the hearts of worshipers of the
true God. Only with this deep sense of awe and wonder at the marvelous
creative and redeeming power of our Lord, can we press on in the footsteps
of holy men of old and prepare our souls for the glories of eternity.
"Some seem to think that if a man has a wholesome fear of the judg-
ments of God, it is a proof that he is destitute of faith, but this is nof so. A
proper fear of God, in believing His threatenings, works the peaceable fruits
of righteousness, by causing the trembling soul to flee to Jesus. Many ought
to have this spirit today, and turn to the Lord with humble contrition, for the
Lord has not given so many terrible threatenings, pronounced so severe judg-
ments in His Word, simply to have them recorded, but He means what He
says. One says, 'Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that
forsake thy law.' Paul says, 'Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we per-
suade men.' "-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1100.
"There should be an intelligent knowledge of how to come to God in
reverence and godly fear with devotional love. There is a growing lack of
reverence for our Maker, a growing disregard of His greatness and His
majesty. But God is speaking to us in these last days. We hear His voice in
the storm, in the rolling thunder. We hear of the calamities He permits in the
earthquakes, the breaking forth of waters, and the destructive elements
sweeping all before them. We hear of ships going down in the tempestuous
ocean. God speaks to families who have refused to recognize Him, sometimes
in the whirlwind and storm, sometimes face to face as He talked with Moses.
Again He whispers His love to the little trusting child and to the gray-haired
sire in his dotage. And earthly wisdom has a wisdom as it beholds the unseen.
"When the still small voice which succeeds the whirlwind and the tem-
pest that moves the rocks out of position, is heard, let all cover their face, for
God is very near. Let them hide themselves in Jesus Christ; for He is their
hiding place. The cleft in the rock is hidden with His own pierced hand while
the humble seeker waits in bowed attitude to hear what saith the Lord unto
His servant."-Selected Messages, book 2, pp. 315, 316.

Lesson 1 Sabbath, July 1, 1995

The Fear of God

"Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of judgment is come:
and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the.
fountains of waters" (Revelation 14:7).

"As we learn more and more of what God is, and of what we ourselves are
in His sight, we shall fear and tremble before Him." - Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 283.

D Sunday
THE OMNIPOTENT CREATOR June 25

1. What aspects of creation should inspire us with reverence for God?

Psalms 96:4,5; 139:14; Revelation 14:7.

"It is not by an original power inherent in nature that year by year the
earth yields its bounties and continues its march around the sun. The hand of
infinite power is perpetually at work guiding this planet. It is God's power
momentarily exercised that keeps it in position in its rotation." - Testimonies,
vol. 8, p. 260.
"The mechanism of the human body cannot be fully understood; it
presents mysteries that baffle the most intelligent. It is not as the result of a
mechanism, which, once set in motion, continues its work, that the pulse
beats and breath follows breath. In God we live and move and have our
being. The beating heart, the throbbing pulse, every nerve and muscle in the
living organism, is kept in order and activity by the power of an ever-present
God."-The Ministry of Healing, p. 417.

2. How do the Scriptures measure the wisdom of man compared with

that of God? Isaiah 40:6, 7, 13-15, 21-23. How can man obtain
true wisdom? Job 28:28; Psalm 111:10.

"Men of the greatest intellect cannot understand the mysteries of

Jehovah as revealed in nature....The judgment and purposes of God are
past finding out. His wisdom is unsearchable."- Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 261.
"Many illustrations from nature are used by the Bible writers, and as
we observe the things of the natural world, we shall be enabled, under the
guiding of the Holy Spirit, more fully to understand the lessons of God's
word."-Education, p. 120.

THE HEAVENLY ATTITUDE June 26
3. According to visions given to the prophets, what is the attitude
manifested by heavenly beings toward their Creator? Isaiah 6: 1~3;
Revelation 4:8-11.

"The seraphim before the throne are so filled with reverential awe in
beholding the glory of God that they do not for an instant look upon them-
selves with self-complacency, or in admiration of themselves or one another.
Their praise and glory are for the Lord of Hosts, who is high and lifted up,
and the glory of whose train fills the temple .... They are fully satisfied to
glorify God; and in His presence, beneath His smile of approbation, they
wish for nothing more. In bearing His image, in doing His service and wor-
shiping Him, their highest ambition is reached."-The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 4'-Jp. 1140.

4. What can we learn about God's sustaining power as shown in vision

to the prophet Ezekiel? Ezekiel 1:8.

"In Ezekiel's vision, God had His hand beneath the wings of the
cherubim. This is to teach His servants that it is divine power that gives
them success. He will work with them if they will put away iniquity, and
become pure in heart and life. The heavenly messengers seen by Ezekiel,
like a bright light going among the living creatures with the swiftness of
lightning, represent the speed with which this work will finally go forward to
completion. He who slumbers not, who is continually at work for the accom-
plishment of His designs, can carry forward His great work harmoniously.
That which appears to finite minds entangled and complicated, the Lord's
hand can keep in perfect order."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 4, p. 1161.
D Tuesday
THE STATE OF HUMANITY June 27
5. In contrast to the cooperative atmosphere of Heaven, how does the
Lord describe the condition on earth, even among the majority of
His professed followers? Ezekiel 2:4 (first part); Romans 1:21 ..

"Through Satan's temptations the whole human race have become

transgressors of God's law."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 338.
"If Adam, at his creation, had not been endowed with twenty times as
much vital force as men now have, the race, with their present habits of living
in violation of natural law, would have become extinct." - Testimonies, vol. 3,
pp. 138, 139.

6. What problems in attitude are intensified in the last days, and how
can sincere Christians avoid being affected by them? 2 Timothy 3:1,
2, 5; Romans 16: 1 7.

-6-
"Rebellion and apostasy are in the very air we breathe. "-- The SDA Bible
Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1114.
"To the end of time, men will arise to create confusion and rebellion
among the people who profess to obey the law of God."-Ibid., vol. 4, p. 1158.
"We are not to unite with the rebellious and call this charitYo"-TheActs
of the Apostles, p. 555.

OVERCOMING HUMAN TENDENCIES June 28

7. What warning and recommendation are given to all who profess to

be children of God? 1 Corinthians 10:1-5; Psalm 105:1-5.

"All who profess to be children of God I 'would invite to consider the

history of the Israelites, as recorded in the one hundred and fifth, the one
hundred and sixth, and the one hundred and seventh psalms. By carefully
studying these scriptures, we may be able to appreciate more fully the good-
ness, mercy, and love of our God."-Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 107.
"[1 Corinthians 10:1-5 quoted.] The experience of Israel, referred to in
the above words by the apostle, and as recorded in the one hundred fifth and
one hundred sixth psalms, contains lessons of warnings that the people of
God in these last days especially need to study. I urge that these chapters be
read at least once a week."- Testimonies to A1inisters, pp. 98, 99.

80 I-Iow can both laymen and ministers be sure that their fear is
applied in the right direction? Isaiah 51:12, 13; Matthew 10:28.

"Christ's followers today should guard against the tendency to lose the
spirit of reverence and godly fear."-Prophets and Kings, p. 48.
"Would that every minister of God realized the holiness of his work and
the sacredness of his calling. As divinely appointed messengers, ministers
are in a position of awful responsibility.... God calls for men who, like
Nathan, Elijah, and John, will bear His message with fearlessness, regard-
less of consequences; who will speak the truth, though to do this calls for the
sacrifice of all they have." -Gospel Workers, p. 150.

THE CONVERTED RESPONSE TO GOD June 29

90 What call we learn from the attitude of men whose worship God has
endorsed? Ezra 9:5, 6; Ezekiel 1:28; Ephesians 3:14.

"We hope that our brethren will not manifest less reverence and awe as
they approach the only true and living God than the heathen manifest for
their idol deities, or these people will be our judges in the day of final deci-
sion.... Men and women, do not dishonor God by your irreverence and
pomposity. Do not st~nd up in your Pharisaism and offer your prayers to
God. Mistrust your own strength. Depend not in it; but often bow down on
your knees before God, and worship Him."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 314.

-7-
"1 was shown that when God sent His angels anciently to minister or
communicate to individuals, and these persons learned that they had seen
and talked with an angel, they were struck with awe and were afraid that
they should die. They had so exalted views of the terrible majesty and power
of God that they thought it would destroy them to be brought into close con-
nection with one direct from His holy presence."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 410.

10. Describe the contrast between God's true people with that of
halfhearted professors in an hour of religious crisis. Revelation
3:14-19; Matthew 24:42-50.

"1 saw some, with strong faith and agonizing cries, pleading with God.
Their countenances were pale and marked with deep anxiety, expressive of
their internal struggle. Firmness and great earnestness was expressed in
their countenances; large drops of perspiration fell from their foreheads.
Now and then their faces would light up with marks of God's approbation,
and again the same solemn, earnest, anxious look would settle upon them. . . .
"Some, 1 saw, did not participate in this work of agonizing and plead-
ing. They seemed indifferent and careless.... 1 asked the meaning of the
shaking 1 had seen and was shown that it would be caused by the straight tes-
timony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to the Laodiceans."
-Early Writings, pp. 269, 270.
"Soon everything that can be shaken will be shaken, that those things
i
that cannot be shaken may remain."-Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 15, 16.

Lesson 2 Sabbath, July 8, 1995

The Narne of God

"Holy and reverend is his name" (Psalm 111:9).

"Angels, when they speak [God's] name, veil their faces. With what
reverence, then, should we, who are fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips!"
-Prophets and Kings, p. 49.

D Sunday
THE MEANING OF GOD'S NAME July 2

1. How did God express His name to Moses, and how is this significant
for us? Exodus 3:13-15.

"I AM means an eternal presence; the past, present, and future are
alike to God. He sees the most remote events of past history, and the far dis-
tant future with as clear a vision as we do those things that are transpiring
daily. We know not what is before us, and if we did, it would not contribute
to our eternal welfare. God gives us an opportunity to exercise faith and
trust in the great I AM."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],
vol. 1, p. 1099.

2. Regardless of the language or dialect in which references to the

Eternal One may be expressed, what should we realize about Him-
and about His name? Psalms 99:1-3; 111:9; Jeremiah 10:6, 7.

"We are never in any manner to treat lightly the titles or appellations of
the Deity."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 106.
"Holy angels have been displeased and disgusted with the irreverent
manner in which many have used the name of God, the great Jehovah.
Angels mention that sacred name with the greatest awe, ever veiling their
faces when they speak the name of God; and the name of Christ is so sacred
to them that they speak it with the greatest reverence. But how opposite the
spirit and influence attending the 1854 time movement. Some who are still
under the same influence speak of God as they would of a horse or of any
other commonplace thing. In their prayers they use the words God Almighty
in a very common and irreverent manner. Those who do this have no sense
of the exalted character of God, of Christ, or of heavenly things."-Testimo-
nies, vol. 1, p. 410.

CARE TO BE EXERCISED July 3

3. Elaborate on the principle given by God in the third commandment

of the Decalogue. Exodus 20:7.

"This commandment not only prohibits false oaths and common swear-
ing, but it forbids us to use the name of God in a light or careless manner,
without regard to its awful significance. By the thoughtless mention of God in
common conversation, by appeals to Him in trivial matters, and by the fre-
quent and thoughtless repetition of His name, we dishonor Him.... All
should meditate upon His majesty, His purity and holiness, that the heart may
be impressed with a sense of His exalted character; and His holy name should
be uttered with reverence and solemnity."-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 306, 307.
"Those who take the name of the Lord in vain will find it a fearful thing
to fall into the hands of the living God."-My Life Today, p. 282.

4. What additional counsel does God give us in reference to His name?

Leviticus 18:21; 19:12; 21:6.

"[When in vision] I saw a light coming from the glory that encircled the
Father, and as it approached near to me, my body trembled and shook like a
leaf. I thought that if it should come near me I would be struck out of exis-
tence, but the light passed me. Then could I have some sense of the great
and terrible God with whom we have to do. I saw then what faint views some
have of the holiness of God, and how much they take His holy and reverend
name in vain, without realizing that it is God, the great and terrible God, of
whom they are speaking." -Early Writings, p. 70.
D Tuesday
ADDRESSING GOD IN PRAYER July 4
5. What does Jesus teach us about the manner in which we should ad-
dress our heavenly Father in prayer? Matthew 6:9.

"To hallow the name of the Lord requires that the words in which we
speak of the Supreme Being be uttered with reverence.... In prayer we
enter the audience chamber of the Most High; and we should come before
Him with holy awe."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 106.
"This name is hallowed by the angels of heaven, by the inhabitants of
unfallen worlds. When you pray, 'Hallowed be Thy name,' you ask that it
may be hallowed in this world, hallowed in you."-Ibid.., p. 107.

6. What are some irreverent prayer practices against which we are

warned? Matthew 6:7,8.

"While praying, many use careless and irreverent expressions, which

grieve the tender Spirit of the Lord and cause their petitions to be shut out of
heaven."-My Life Today, p. 282. .

-10 -
"Let not those who kneel around the family altar put their faces in their
hands close down to the chair when they address God. Let them lift up their
heads and with holy awe speak to their heavenly Father, uttering their
words in tones that can be heard."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 381.
"Reverence should be shown ... for the name of God. Never should
that name be spoken lightly or thoughtlessly. Even in prayer its frequent or
needless repetition should be avoided." -Education, p. 243.
"I saw that God's holy name should be used with reverence and awe.
The words God Almighty are coupled together and used by some in prayer
in a careless, thoughtless manner, which is displeasing to Him. Such have no
realizing sense of God or the truth, or they would not speak so irreverently
of the great and dreadful God, who is soon to judge them in the last day. Said
the angel, 'Couple them not together; for fearful is His name.' Those who
realize the greatness and majesty of God, will take His name on their lips
with holy awe. He dwelleth in light unapproachable; no man can see Him
and live. I saw that these things will have to be understood and corrected
before the church can prosper."-Early Writings, p. 122.
D Wednesday
OATH TAKING July 5

7. In regard to oath taking, what distinction did Jesus clarify in Mat-

thew 5:34-36 and Matthew 26:63, 64 (first part)?

"[The Jews] had many devices for freeing themselves from the obliga-
tion imposed by an oath. They did not fear to indulge in what was really pro-
fanity, nor did they shrink from perjury so long as it was veiled by some
technical evasion of the law.
"Jesus condemned their practices, declaring that their custom in oath
taking was a transgression of the commandment of God. Our Saviour did
not, however, forbid the use of the judicial oath, in which God is solemnly
called to witness that what is said is truth and nothing but the truth."-
Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 66, 67.

8. What basic principle did Jesus teach, and what are its implications
for us in everyday life? Matthew 5:37.

"Jesus proceeded to lay down a principle that would make oath taking
needless. He teaches that the exact truth should be the law of speech. [Mat-
thew 5:37 quoted.]
"These words condemn all those meaningless phrases and expletives
that border on profanity. They condemn the deceptive compliments, the
.evasion of truth, the flattering phrases, the exaggerations, the misrepresen-
tations in trade, that are current in society and in the business world. They
teach that no one who tries to appear what he is not, or whose words do not
convey the real sentiment of his heart, can be called truthful.
"If these words of Christ were heeded, they would check the utterance
of evil surmising and unkind criticism; for in commenting upon the actions

-11-
and motives of another, who can be certain of speaking the exact truth? How
often pride, passion, personal resentment, color the impression given! A
glance, a word, even an intonation of the voice, may be vital with falsehood.
Even facts may be so stated as to convey a false impression. And 'whatso-
ever is more than' truth, 'is of the evil one.' "-Thoughts From the Mount of
Blessing, pp. 67, 68.

D Thursday
GLORIFYING HIS NAME July 6

9. How does a faithful Christian glorify the name of God? Psalm 96:8
(first part); Revelation 15:4.

"In all you do glorify [God's] name. Divest yourselves of selfishness and
selfish love."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 71.
"In every act of life you are to make manifest the name of God.... You
cannot hallow His name, you cannot represent Him to the world, unless in
life and character you represent the very life and character of God. This you
can do only through the acceptance of the grace and righteousness of
Christ."-Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 107.

10. How can we continually reap the benefits of God's holy name? Prov-
erbs 18:10; John 14:13, 14; 1 John 3:22. Explain how God's glory
must be fully manifested by those who receive His seal of protec-
tion in the last days. Revelation 14:1.

"Unless the name of God is written in your forehead-written there

because God is the center of your thoughts-you will not be meet for the

Honoring the Son of God

"That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the
Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which
hath sent him" (John 5:23).

THE PREEXISTENCE OF CHRIST July 9

1. How long has Christ existed? John 1:1,2; Proverbs 8:22-30; Micah
5:2.

"Christ was God essentially, and in the highest sense. He was with God
from all eternity, God over all, blessed forevermore.
"The Lord Jesus Christ, the divine Son of God, existed from eternity, a
distinct person, yet one with the Father."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1126.
"In speaking of His preexistence, Christ carries the mind back through
dateless ages. He assures us that there never was a time when He was not in
close fellowship with the eternal God."-Li/t Him Up, p. 17.

2. What caused the Jews to reject this essential truth, and how can
professed believers today fall into the same trap? John 8:56-59
(first part); 2 Corinthians 3:14; 4:4; 1 Timothy 4:1, 2.

"[1 Timothy 4:1,2 quoted.] Before the last developments of the work of
apostasy there will be a confusion of faith. There will not be clear and
definite ideas concerning the mystery of God. One truth after another will be
corrupted.... There are many who deny the preexistence of Christ, and
therefore deny His divinity; they do not accept Him as a personal Saviour.
This is a total denial of Christ. He was the only-begotten Son of God, who
was one with the Father from the beginning. By Him the worlds were
made." - The Signs of the Times, May 28, 1894.

3. How were the universe and its inhabitants created? John 1':3; Ephe-
sians 3:9; Colossians 1:15-17.

"The Father wrought by His Son in the creation of all heavenly beings."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 34.
"It was Christ that spread the heavens, and laid the foundations of the
earth. It was His hand that hung the worlds in space, and fashioned the
flowers of the field. 'His strength setteth fast the mountains.' 'The sea is
His, and He made it.' Psalm 65:6; 95:5. It was He that filled the earth with
beauty, and the air with song. And upon all things in earth, and air, and sky,
He wrote the message of the Father's love."-The Desire of Ages, p. 20.
"The hand that sustains the worlds in space, the hand that holds in their
orderly arrangement and tireless activity all things throughout the universe
of God, is the hand that was nailed to the cross for uS."-Education, p. 132.

4. What can we learn from the statements of God regarding His Son?
Matthew 17:5; Hebrews 1:1-10.

"[Hebrews 1:4-12 quoted.] In this language is represented the omnipo-

tence of the Lord Jesus. He is introduced to the Bible student as the Creator
of the world, and was its rightful Ruler."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.

GOD GAVE ALL July 11

5. For what reasons did the Son of God personally come to planet
Earth? Isaiah 9:6; John 3:16,34-36; 1 John 4:9.

"By coming to dwell with us, Jesus was to reveal God both to men and
to angels. He was the Word of God-God's thought made audible.... But
not alone for His earthborn children was this revelation given. Our little
world is the lesson book of the universe. God's wonderful purpose of grace,
the mystery of redeeming love, is the theme into which 'angels desire to
look,' and it will be their study throughout endless ages. Both the redeemed
and the unfallen beings will find in the cross of Christ their science and their
song. It will be seen that the glory shining in the face of Jesus is the glory of
self-sacrificing love."- The Desire of Ages, pp. 19, 20.

6. Why is a personal knowledge of Jesus Christ so important to

human beings? John 17:3; 1 John 2:23; 5:11, 12.

"In the light from Calvary it will be seen that the law of self-renouncing
love is the law of life for earth and heaven; that the love which 'seeketh not

-14 -
her own' has its source in the heart of God; and that in the meek and lowly
One is manifested the character of Him who dwelleth in the light which no
man can approach unto."-The Desire of Ages, p. 20.
"In following Christ, looking unto Him who is the Author and Finisher
of your faith, you will feel that you are working under His eye, that you are
influenced by His presence, and that He knows your motives. At every step
you will humbly inquire: Will this please Jesus? Will it glorify God? Morning.
and evening your earnest prayers should ascend to God for His blessing and
guidance. True prayer takes hold upon Omnipotence and gives us the vic-
tory. Upon his knees the Christian obtains strength to resist temptation."-

REVERENCE EXPECTED July 12

7. How does the Bible illustrate God's longsuffering towards His peo-
ple? Isaiah 5:1-4, 7. What does the parable of the vineyard teach?
Matthew 21:33-37.

"Prophets and messengers were sent to urge God's claim upon the hus-
bandmen; but instead of being welcomed, they were treated as enemies. The
husbandmen persecuted and killed them.... As a last resource, God sent His
Son, saying, 'They will reverence My Son.' "-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 293.

8. Describe the attitude which Heaven clearly bids us manifest toward

Christ. John 5:23; Revelation 5:11, 12; Philippians 2:9-11. What
duty must be realized more fully by church leaders and laypersons
alike?

"Men handling sacred things do not feel the reverence and awe that
they should. They do not speak with trembling of the things of God. This is
the sure result of a lack of personal piety. They take very little time to seek
God's counsel in humble contrition of soul."-Manuscript Releases, vol. 21,
pp. 454, 455.
"When we approach the subject of Christ's divinity clothed with the
garb of humanity, we may appropriately heed the words spoken by Christ to
Moses at the burning bush, 'Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place
whereon thou standest is holy ground.' We must come to the study of this
subject with the humility of a learner, with a contrite heart." - The SDA Bible

which He could reach men was to veil His glory by a garb of humanity. The

-15 -
angels beheld the hiding of His glory, that divinity might touch humanity.
Christ ever retained the utmost hatred for sin, but He loved the purchase of
His blood. He suffered in the place of sinful men, taking them into union
with Himself.
"This is the mystery into which angels desire to look. They desire to
know how Christ could live and work in a fallen world, how He could mingle
with sinful humanity. It was a mystery to them that He who hated sin with
intense hatred felt the most tender, compassionate sympathy for the beings
that committed sin."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7,
p.904.

10. What is the twofold role of Christ in the judgment of mankind?

1 John 2:1; John 5:22; 2 Corinthians 5:10.

"Jehovah did not deem the plan of salvation complete while invested.
only with His love. He has placed at His altar an Advocate clothed in our
nature. As our Intercessor, Christ's office work is to introduce us to God as
His sons and daughters. He intercedes in behalf of those who receive Him.
With His own blood He has paid their ransom." - Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 177, 178.
"God designed that the Prince of sufferers in humanity should be judge
of the whole world. He who submitted to be arraigned before an earthly tri-
bunal, He who came from the heavenly courts to save man from eternal
death, He whom men despised, rejected, and upon whom they heaped all the
contempt of which human beings inspired by Satan are capable, He who suf-
fered the ignominious death of the cross-He alone was to pronounce the
sentence of reward or of punishment."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.

Grieve Not the Holy Spirit

"Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the
day of redemption" (Ephesians 4:30).

"It is through the Spirit that Christ dwells in us; and the Spirit of God,
received into the heart by faith, is the beginning of the life eternaL" - The
Desire of Ages, p. 388.

THIRD PERSON OF THE GODHEAD July 16

1. How was the Spirit of God involved in both the creation of the uni-
verse and the initiation of the plan of redemption? Genesis 1:1, 2.

"The Godhead was stirred with pity for the race, and the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit gave Themselves to the working out of the plan of
redemption." -Counsels on Health, p. 222.

2. What evidences do we have that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person as

well as a power? Acts 13:2-4; 15:28; Ephesians 4:30.

"There are three living persons of the heavenly trio; in the name of
these three great powers-the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit-those
who receive Christ by living faith are baptized." -Evangelism, p. 615.
"The Holy Spirit has a personality, else He could not bear witness to
our spirits and with our spirits that we are the children of God. He must also
be a divine person, else He could not search out the secrets which lie hidden
in the mind of God. 'For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the
s·pirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but
the Spirit of God.' "-Ibid., p. 617. -

THE OPERATION OF THE SPIRIT July 17

3. What work does the Holy Spirit do in behalf of the heirs of salva-
tion? Acts 2:3, 4; John 3:8; 16:13 (first part).

"The Holy Spirit is Christ's representative, but divested of the per-

sonality of humanity, and independent thereof. Cumbered with humanity,

-17 -
Christ could not be in every place personally. Therefore it was for [the disci-
ples'] interest that He should go to the Father, and send the Spirit to be His
successor on earth. No one could then have any advantage because of his
location or his personal contact with Christ. By the Spirit the Saviour would
be accessible to all. In this sense He would be nearer to them than if He had
not ascended on high."- The Desire of Ages, p. 669.
"The plant grows by receiving that which God has provided to sustain
its life. So spiritual growth is attained through cooperation with divine agen-
cies. As the plant takes root in the soil, so we are to take root in Christ. As
the plant receives the sunshine, the dew, and the rain, so are we to receive
the Holy Spirit." -Education, p. 106.

4. Why was the psalmist awestruck by the power of God's Spirit?

Psalm 139:7-12.

"The greatness of God is to us incomprehensible. 'The Lord's throne is

in heaven' (Psalm 11:4); yet by His Spirit He is everywhere present. He has
an intimate knowledge of, and a personal interest in, all the works of His
hand."-Education, p. 132.

A GENTLE WOOING July 18

5. How is the voice of the Holy Spirit different from what people might
naturally expect? 1 Kings 19:11-13; Isaiah 30:21.

"The Holy Spirit, sent from heaven by the benevolence of infinite love"
takes the things of God and reveals them to every soul that has an implicit
faith in Christ. By His power the vital truths upon which the salvation of the
soul depends are impressed upon the mind, and the way of life is made so
plain that none need err therein. As we study the Scriptures, we should pray
for the light of God's Holy Spirit to shine upon the word, that we may see
and appreciate its treasures." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 113.
"In the secret place of prayer, where no eye but God's can see, no ear
but His can hear, we may pour out our most hidden desires and longings to
the Father of infinite pity, and in the hush and silence of the soul that voice
which never fails to answer the cry of human need will speak to our hearts."
- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 84.

6. What kind of habitation is appropriate for the indwelling of the

Holy Spirit? John 14:17; 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17; Isaiah 57:15.

"Those whom heaven recognizes as holy oiles are the last to parade
their own goodness." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 160.
"God does not bid you fear that He will fail to fulfill His promises, that
His patience will weary, or His compassion be found wanting. Fear lest your
will shall not be held in subjection to Christ's will, lest your hereditary and

-18 -
cultivated traits of character shall control your life. 'It is God which worketh
in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.' Fear lest self shall inter-
pose between your soul and the great Master Worker. Fear lest self-will
shall mar the high purpose that through you God desires to accomplish. Fear
to trust to your own strength, fear to withdraw your hand from the hand of
Christ and attempt to walk life's pathway without His abiding presence."-
Ibid., p. 161.

THE UNPARDONABLE SIN July 19

7. What warnings are given against resisting the voice of the Holy
Spirit? Acts 7:51; Hebrews 6:4-6; 10:26,27.

"Conscience is the voice of God, heard amid the conflict of human pas-
sions; when'it is resisted, the Spirit of God is grieved.
"We want all to understand how the soul is destroyed. It is not that God
sends out a decree that man shall not be saved. He does not throw a dark-
ness before the eyes which cannot be penetrated. But man at first resists a
motion of the Spirit of God, and, having once resisted, it is less difficult to do
so the second time, less the third, and far less the fourth. Then comes the
harvest to be reaped from the seed of unbelief and resistance. Oh what a har-
vest of sinful indulgences is preparing for the sickle!
"When secret prayer and re~ding of the Scriptures are neglected today,
tomorrow they can be omitted with less remonstrance of conscience. There
will be a long list of omissions, all for a single grain sown in the soil of the
heart."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 120.
"It is through the agency of the Holy Spirit that God communicates
with man; and those who deliberately reject this agency as satanic, have cut
off the channel of communication between the soul and Heaven.
"God works by the manifestation of His Spirit to reprove and convict
the sinner; and if the Spirit's work is finally rejected, there is no more that
God can do for the soul. The last resource of divine mercy has been
employed. The transgressor has cut himself off from God, and sin has no
remedy to cure itself. There is no reserved power by which God can work to
convict and convert the sinner. 'Let him alone' (Hosea 4:17) is the divine
command." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 405.

8. What sin cannot be forgiven? Matthew 12:31, 32. How can we

avoid this serious danger? Hebrews 2:1-3; Psalm 19:13, 14.

"It is dangerous to utter a word of doubt, dangerous to question and

criticize divine light. The habit of careless and irreverent criticism reacts
upon the character, in fostering irreverence and unbelief. Many a man
indulging in this habit has gone on unconscious of danger, until he was ready
to criticize and reject the work of the Holy Spirit." - The Desire ofAges, p. 323.
"The sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit does not lie in any sud-
den word or deed; it is the firm, determined resistance of truth and ~vidence.

-19 -
"No one need look upon the sin against the Holy Ghost as something
mysterious and indefinable. The sin against the Holy Ghost is the sin of per-
sistent refusal to respond to the invitation to repent." - The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1093.

NOW IS THE TIME July 20

9. How do we receive the Holy Spirit? Acts 8:14, 15; Luke 11:13.

"Why do we not hunger and thirst for the gift of the Spirit, since this is
the means by which we are to receive power? Why do we not talk of it, pray
for it, preach concerning it? The Lord is more willing to give the Holy Spirit
to us than parents are to give good gifts to their children. For the baptism of
the Spirit every worker should be pleading with God. Companies should be
gathered together to ask for special help, for heavenly wisdom, that they Ilfay
know how to plan and execute wisely. Especially should men pray that God
will baptize His missionaries with the Holy Spirit."- Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 22.

10. What promise is given especially for these last days, and what is
one main condition attached to it? Zechariah 10:1.

"The dispensation in which we are now living is to be, to those that ask,
the dispensation of the Holy Spirit. Ask for His blessing. It is time we were
more intense in our devotion. To us is committed the arduous, but happy,
glorious work of revealing Christ to those who are in darkness. We are called
to proclaim the special truths for this time. For all this the outpouring of the
Spirit is essential. We should pray for it. The Lord expects us to ask Him. We
have not been wholehearted in this work."- Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 511, 512.

NOURISHMENT FOR THE SOUL July 23
1. How did the Lord seek to impress ancient Israelites with a sense of
their spiritual need? Deuteronomy 8:2, 3. How can this lesson be
applied to modern Israel?

"Those are blessed with clearest light who are willing ... to accept the
living oracles upon the authority of God. If asked to explain certain state-
ments, they can only answer: 'It is so presented in the Scriptures.' They are
obliged to acknowledge that they cannot explain the operation of divine
power or the manifestation of divine wisdom. It is as the Lord intended it
should be, that we find ourselves compelled to accept some things solely by
faith." - Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 700, 701.
"Let the word of God stand just as it is. Let not human wisdom presume
to lessen the force of one statement of the Scriptures. The solemn denuncia-
tion in the Revelation should warn us against taking such ground. In the
name of my Master I bid you: 'Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the
place whereon thou standest is holy ground.' "-Ibid., p. 711.
2. What illustrations depict the life-giving nourishment gained from
communion with God? Psalm 63:1, 5 (first part); Isaiah 55:1, 2;
John 6:35, 63. How should we treat God's holy Word?

"The creative energy that called the worlds into existence is in the
word of God. This word imparts power; it begets life. Every command is a
promise; accepted by the will, received into the soul, it brings with it the life
of the Infinite One. It transforms the nature and re-creates the soul in the
image of God."-Education, p. 126.
"We should reverence God's word. For the printed volume we should

And never should Scripture be quoted in a jest, or paraphrased to point a
witty saying." -Ibid., p. 244.

OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS July 24

3. How did Jesus affirm the sacred inspiration of the Old Testament
scriptures? Mark 12:24; Luke 16:29, 31; John 5:39, 46, 47.

"Many professed Christians now discard the Old Testament, claiming

that it is no longer of any use. But such is not Christ's teaching....
"The Saviour is revealed in the Old Testament as clearly as in the New.
It is the light from the prophetic past that brings out the life of Christ and the
teachings of the New Testament with clearness and beauty."-The Desire of
Ages, p. 799.

4. How do the Scriptures depict the Old and New Testaments? Revela-
tion 11:3,4.

"The two witnesses represent the Scriptures of the Old and New Testa-
ment. Both are important testimonies to the origin and perpetuity of the law
of God. Both are witnesses also to the plan of salvation. The types, sacri-
fices, and prophecies of the Old Testament point forward to a Saviour to
come. The Gospels and Epistles of the New Testament tell of a Saviour who
has come in the exact manner foretold by type and prophecy."-The Great
Controversy, p. 267.

A POWERFUL TOOL July 25

5. How is the Word of God similar to a surgeon's knife to cut away

spiritual disease? Hebrews 4:12.

"Practical truth must be brought into the life, and the Word, like a
sharp, two-edged sword, must cut away the surplus of self that there is in
our characters.
"The Word makes the proud humble, the perverse meek and contrite,-
the disobedient obedient. The sinful habits natural to man are interwoven
with the daily practice. But the Word cuts away the fleshly lusts. It is a
discerner of the thoughts and intents of the mind. It divides the joints and
marrow, cutting away the lusts of the flesh, making men willing to suffer for
their Lord."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 928.

6. How can the powerful Word of God become a dangerous weapon

when wrongly used? 2 Peter 3:16 (last part); Luke 11:52.

"There is much reading of the Bible that is.without profit and in many
cases a positive injury. When the word of God is opened without reverence
and without prayer; when the thoughts and affections are not fixed upon
God or in harmony with His will, the mind is clouded with doubt; and in the

- 22-
very study of the Bible, skepticism strengthens. The enemy takes control of
the thoughts, and he suggests interpretations that are not correct." - Testi-
monies, vol. 5, pp. 704, 705.
"Every student, as he opens the Scriptures, should ask for the enligh-
tenment of the Holy Spirit; and the promise is sure that it will be given. The
spirit in which you come to the investigation of the Scriptures will determine
the character of the assistant at your side. Angels from the world of light will
be with those who in humility of heart seek for divine guidance. But if the Bible
is opened with irreverence, with a feeling of self-sufficiency, if the heart is
filled with prejudice, Satan is beside you, and he will set the plain statements
of God's word in a perverted light."- Testimonies to Ministers, p. 108.

THE SUPREME EDUCATOR July 26
7. What words of caution apply to some of the teachings in secular
and even religious schools? 1 Timothy 6:20,21; 2 Timothy 3:7; 4:4.
How do many follow the example of Judas in distorting the Scrip-
tures?

"[Judas, the betrayer] would introduce texts of Scripture that had no

connection with the truths Christ was presenting. These texts, separated
from their connection, perplexed the disciples, and increased the discour-
agement that was constantly pressing upon them. Yet all this was done by
Judas in such a way as to make it appear that he was conscientious. And
while the disciples were searching for evidence to confirm the words of the
Great Teacher, Judas would lead them almost imperceptibly on another
track. Thus in a very religious, and apparently wise, way he was presenting
matters in a different light from that in which Jesus had given them, and
attaching to His words a meaning that He had not conveyed."- The Desire of
Ages, p. 719.
"Those who look to the Scriptures to find discrepancies have not
spiritual insight. With distorted vision they will see many causes for doubt
and unbelief in things that are really plain and simple. But to those who take
God's word with reverence, seeking to learn His will that they may obey it,
all is changed. They are filled with awe and wonder as they contemplate the
purity and exalted excellence of the truths revealed." - Testimonies, vol. 5,
p.705.

8. Why are the Scriptures, when reverently employed, appropriate as

the chief textbook in educational settings? Psalms 12:6; 119:105,
130; Proverbs 9:10.

"In true science there can be nothing contrary to the teaching of the
word of God, for both have the same Author. A correct understanding of
both will always prove them to be in harmony." - Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 258.
"The Bible contains all that is needful for the saving of the soul, and at
the same time it is adapted to strengthen and discipline the mind. Used as a
textbook in our schools, it will be found far more effective than any other

- 23-
book in guiding wisely in the affairs of this life, as well as in aiding the soul
to climb the ladder that reaches to heaven. The Bible gives the true seeker

9. How have some individuals, long deprived of easy access to the

Word of God manifested an intense respect for it? 2 Chronicles

10. How and why should we treasure the Word of God especially in
these last days? Psalm 119:161; Amos 8:11, 12; John 12:48.

"The Bible is God's voice speaking to us, just as surely as if we could

hear it with our ears. If we realized this, with what awe we would open God's
Word and with what earnestness we would search its precepts." -My Life To-
day, p. 283.
"When a real love for the Bible is awakened, and the student begins to
realize how vast is the field and how precious its treasure, he will desire to
seize upon every opportunity for acquainting himself with God's word. Its
study will be restricted to no special time or place. And this continuous study
is one of the best means of cultivating a love for the Scriptures. Let the stu-
dent keep his Bible always with him. As you have opportunity, read a text
and meditate upon it. While walking the streets, waiting at a railway station,

A SACRED TRANSCRIPT July 30
1. Since ancient times, what has been the basis of God's holy covenant
with His people? Genesis 2:16, 17; 17:7; Deuteronomy 4:9-13.

"The law of God is as sacred as God Himself. It is a revelation of His

will, a transcript of His character, the expression of divine love and wisdom.
. . . While everything in nature is governed by natural laws, man alone, of all
that inhabits the earth, is amenable to moral law. To man, the crowning
work of creation, God has given power to understand His requirements, to
comprehend the justice and beneficence of His law, and its sacred claims
upon him; and of man unswerving obedience is required."-Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 52.

2. In His earthly ministry, how did Jesus Christ reaffirm the sacred-
ness of God's holy law? Matthew 19:16, 17; 22:36-40.

"The ten holy precepts spoken by Christ upon Sinai's mount were the
revelation of the character of God, and made known to the world the fact
that He had jurisdiction over the whole human heritage. That law of ten pre-
cepts of the greatest love that can be presented to man is the voice of God
from heaven speaking to the soul in promise, 'This do, and you will not come
under the dominion and control of Satan.' There is not a negative in that law,
although it may appear thus. It is DO, and Live."-The SDA Bible Commentary

3. How does the Bible describe the timeless, changeless law of God?
Psalms 119:142; 89:34; Luke 16:17.

- 25-
"The law of God existed before man was created. It was adapted to the
condition of holy beings; even angels were governed by it....
"After the fall, the principles of those precepts were not changed, but
additional precepts were given to meet man in his fallen stat~ ... This was
necessary in consequence of the minds of men being blinded by transgres-
sion."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1104.

4. Explain how God's plan of redemption and His holy law powerfully
work together. Psalm 19:7; Romans 7:7-12; 8:3, 4.

"God has given us His holy precepts, because He loves mankind. To

shield us from the results of transgression, He reveals the principles of
righteousness. The law is an expression of the thought of God; when received
in Christ, it becomes our thought. It lifts us above the power of natural
desires and tendencies, above temptations that lead to sin. God desires us to
be happy, and He gave us the precepts of the law that in obeying them we
might have joy....
"In the life of Christ the principles of the law are made plain; and as the
Holy Spirit of God touches the heart, as the light of Christ reveals to men
their need of His cleansing blood and His justifying righteousness, the law is
still an agent in bringing us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith."-

THE FRUIT OF GENUINE CONVERSION August 1

5. Explain the "old" and "new" covenants. Exodus 24:7, 8; Hebrews

8:6-12; 2 Corinthians 3:3.

"The same law that was engraved upon the tables of stone is written by
the Holy Spirit upon the tables of the heart. Instead of going about to estab-
lish our own righteousness we accept the righteousness of Christ. His blood
atones for our sins. His obedience is accepted for us. Then the heart renewed
by the Holy Spirit will bring forth 'the fruits of the Spirit.' Through the
grace of Christ we shall live in obedience to the law of God written upon our
hearts." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 372.
6. How does God make obedience to His law a delight through genuine
conversion, sustaining His children even in a world of apostasy?
Ezekiel 36:26, 27; Psalm 40:8; 1 John 2:3,4.

"There will be a sharp conflict between those who are loyal to God and
those who cast scorn upon His law. Reverence for God's law has been sub-
verted. The religious leaders are teaching for doctrine the commandments
of men. As it was in the days of ancient Israel, so it is in this age of the world.
But because of the prevalence of disloyalty and transgression, will those who
have reverenced the law of God now cherish less respect for it? Will they

- 26-
unite with the powers of earth to make it void? The loyal will not be carried
away by the current of evil. They will not throw contempt on that which God
has set apart as holy. They will not follow Israel's example of forgetfulness;
they will call to remembrance God's dealings with His people in all ages, and
will walk in the way of His commandments."-Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 120.

THE TESTIMONIES OF GOD'S SPIRIT August 2

7. How does God define "the testimony of Jesus" among His remnant
people, and affirm its inspiration and purpose? Revelation 12:17;
19:10 (last part).

"We must follow the directions given through the Spirit of prophecy. We
must love and obey the truth for this time. This will save us from accepting
strong delusions. God has spoken to us through His word. He has spoken to us
through the testimonies to the church, and through the books that have helped
to make plain our present duty and the position we should now occupy. The
warnings that have been given, line upon line, precept upon precept, should be
heeded. If we disregard them, what excuse can we offer?"-Gospel Workers,
p.308.

8. Why is it so needful that we have a wholehearted appreciation of the

Spirit of prophecy? 2 Chronicles 20:20 (last part); Hosea 12:13.

"Here you are crying before God, in the anguish of your souls, for more
light. I am authorized from God to tell you that not another ray of light
through the Testimonies will shine upon your pathway until you make a prac-
tical use of the light already given....
"Some that have received special warnings through testimony have
forgotten in a few weeks the reproof given. The testimonies to some have
been several times repeated, but they have not thought them of sufficient im-
portance to be carefully heeded.... When you gather up the rays of light
which God has given in the past, then will He give an increase of light."

"God designs that His people shall be a unit, that they shall see eye to eye
and be of the same mind and of the same judgment." - Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 361.

to separate all sin and wickedness from them, that they may perfect holiness
in His fear."-Ibid., vol. 2, p. 452.

10. What special cautions are given to safeguard the faith of those who
believe in the gift of prophecy in these last days? Acts 20:30, 31;
1 John 4:1; Isaiah 8:20.

"Soon every possible effort will be made to discount and pervert the
truth of the testimonies of God's Spirit.... There will be those once united
with us in the faith who will search for new, strange doctrines, for something
odd and sensational to present to the people. They will bring in all conceiv-
able fallacies, and will present them as coming from Mrs. White, that they
may beguile souls."-Selected Messages, book 1, p. 41.

lished works. Are there any points of interest concerning which she has not

"There will be false dreams and false visions, which have some truth,
but lead away from the original faith.... If they belittle the law of God, if
they pay no heed to His will as revealed in the testimonies of His Spirit, they
are deceivers."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7,

The Presence of· God

"Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world
stand in awe of him" (Psalm 33:8).

"True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness

and a realization of His presence." -Education, p. 242.

HOLY GROUND August 6

1. What can we learn from the experience of Moses when he came into
the presence of God? Exodus 3:1-5. How did Joshua act when in
the presence of Christ? Joshua 5:13-15.

"Humility and reverence should characterize the deportment of all who

.come into the presence of God." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 252.

2. What description of God's power, as manifested on Mount Sinai,

should motivate us with reverence and fear? Exodus 19:20-24;
Hebrews 12:25, 26, 28, 29. Even without outward manifestations
of God's presence, when do we stand on holy ground today?

"God purposed to make the occasion of speaking His law a scene of

awful grandeur, in keeping with its exalted character. The people were to be
impressed that everything connected with the service of God must be
regarded with the greatest reverence." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 303.
"So terrible were the tokens of Jehovah's presence that the hosts of
Israel shook with fear, and fell upon their faces before the Lord. Even Moses
exclaimed, 'I exceedingly fear and quake.' "-Ibid., p. 304.

3. What mentality reveals the foolishness of many people, including

some who have been once entrusted with great light? Psalm 73:11;
Ezekiel 8: 12.

- 29-
4. With what simple explanations does the Bible. depict the omni-
science of God, especially in regard to the heavenly records being
gathered in these last days? Psalms 11:4; 102:19; Revelation 11:1.

"The all-seeing eye of God is upon us; the secret thoughts of our hearts
are not hidden. Everyone of us will be judged according to the deeds done in
the body. I inquire of you today, How do you stand before God? How does
He who can understand every motive, see every thought, hear every word,
behold every action of your life, regard your case?" - The Youth's Instructor,
July 21, 1892.
"The grand judgment is taking 'place and has been going for some time.
Now the Lord says, 'Measure the temple and the worshipers thereof.'
Remember when you are walking the streets about your business, God is
measuring you; when you are attending your household duties, when you
engage in conversation, God is measuring you. Remember that your words
and actions are being daguerreotyped [photographed] in the books of
heaven, as the face is reproduced by the artist on the polished plate." - The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 972.

LIFE BEFORE HEAVENLY WITNESSES August 8

5. How does the example of Joseph warn us against succumbing to

temptations that will come to us in secret? Genesis 39:3-9; Prov~
erbs 7:7-10, 18-20.

"Joseph's faith and integrity were to be tested by fiery trials. His mas-
ter's wife endeavored to entice the young man to transgress the law of God.
Heretofore he had remained untainted by the corruption teeming in that
heathen land; but this temptation, so sudden, so strong, so seductive-how
should it be met? ... With inexpressible anxiety, angels looked upon the
scene.
"Joseph's answer reveals the power of religious principle. He would not
betray the confidence of his master on earth, and, whatever the conse-
quences, he would be true to his Master in heaven. Under the inspecting eye
of God and holy angels many take liberties of which they would not be guilty
in the presence of their fellow men, but Joseph's first thought was of God."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 217.

6. What will result from a more vivid understanding of God's omni-

science and omnipresence? Hebrews 4:13; Psalm 33:8, 14, 15.

"If we were to cherish an habitual impression that God sees and hears
all that we do and say and keeps a faithful record of our words and actions,
and that we must meet it all, we would fear to sin. Let the young ever
remember that wherever they are, and whatever they do, they are in the
presence of God. No part of our conduct escapes observation. We cannot
hide our ways from the Most High. Human laws, though sometimes severe,

- 30-
are often transgressed without detection, and hence with impunity. But not
so with the law of God. The deepest midnight is no cover for the guilty one.
He may think himself alone, but to every deed there is an unseen witness.
The very motives of his heart are open to divine inspection. Every act, every
word, every thought, is as distinctly marked as though there were only one
person in the whole world, and the attention of heaven were centered upon
him."-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 217, 218.

GOD'S CONTINUAL PRESENCE August 9

7. How is an awareness of God's omniscience and omnipresence to

comfort our hearts? 2 Chronicles 16:9 (first part); Matthew 6:4;
Hebrews 4:14-16.

"Only the sense of God's presence can banish the fear that, for the
timid child, would make life a burden. Let him fix in his memory the prom-
ise, 'The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and
delivereth them.' Psalm 34:7." -Education, p. 255.

8. With what words did the apostle Paul seek to instill in his flock a
desire to please God, and not merely Paul? Philippians 2:12, 13.
How should a realization of God's presence keep fresh in our minds
scenes of the judgment and prevent us from committing secret sins?

"Various sins that are cherished and practiced by professed Christians

bring the frown of God upon the church. In the day when the Ledger of
Heaven shall be opened, the Judge will not in words express to man his guilt,
but will cast one penetrating, convicting glance, and every deed, every trans-
action of life, will be vividly impressed upon the memory of the wrongdoer.
The person will not, as in Joshua's day, need to be hunted out from tribe to
family, but his own lips will confess his shame, his selfishness, covetousness,
dishonesty, dissembling, and fraud. His sins, hidden from the knowledge of
man, will then be proclaimed, as it were, upon the housetop."- Testimonies,
vol. 4, p. 493.
"As a shield from temptation and an inspiration to purity and truth, no
other influence can equal the sense of God's presence."-Education, p. 255.

GOD'S SPECIAL PRESENCE August 10

9. Explain the benefits of secret prayer. Psalms 4:4; 62:8; 63:1, 2, 5, 6.

"We should pray in the family circle, and above all we must not neglect
secret prayer, for this js the life of the soul. It is impossible for the soul to
flourish while prayer is neglected. Family or public prayer alone is not suffi-
cient. In solitude let the soul be laid open to the inspecting eye of God.
Secret prayer is to be heard only by the prayer-hearing God. No curious ear

- 31-
is to receive the burden of such petitions. In secret prayer the soul is free
from surrounding influences, free from excitement. Calmly, yet fervently,
will it reach out after God. Sweet and abiding will be the influence emanat-
ing from Him who seeth in secret, whose ear is open to hear the prayer aris-
ing from the he.art. By calm, simple faith the soul holds communion with God
and gathers to itself rays of divine light to strengthen and sustain it in the
conflict with Satan. God is our tower of strength." -Steps to Christ, p. 98.

10. How does the Bible depict the beauty and delight of time devoted
exclusively to God? Psalm 84:4-8, 12; Song of Solomon 2:3,4.

"We all lose much sweet communion with God by our restlessness, by
not encouraging moments of reflection and prayer." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 492.
"Many, even in their seasons of devotion, fail of receiving the blessing
of real communion with God. They are in too great haste. With hurried steps
they press through the circle of Christ's loving presence, pausing perhaps a
moment within the sacred precincts, but not waiting for counsel. They have
no time to remain with the divine Teacher. With their burdens they return to
their work.
"These workers can never attain the highest success until they learn
the secret of strength. They must give themselves time to think, to pray, to
wait upon God for a renewal of physical, mental, and spiritual power. They
need the uplifting influence of His Spirit. Receiving this, they will be
quickened by fresh life. The wearied frame and tired brain will be refreshed,
the burdened heart will be lightened.
"Not a pause for a moment in His presence, but personal contact with
Christ, to sit down in companionship with Him-this is our need."-Educa-
tion, pp. 260, 261.

"Everything connected with the service of God must be regarded with

the greatest reverence." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 303.

A HOLY GOD August 13

1. Describe the needed attitude with which we are to approach our

Creator in these last days. Psalm 99:1-5.

"Man must come on bended knee, as a subject of grace, a suppliant at

the footstool of mercy."-Selected Messages, book 2, p. 315.
"Parents, elevate the standard of Christianity in the minds of your
children; help them to weave Jesus into their experience; teach them to have
the highest reverence for the house of God and to understand that when they
enter the Lord's house it should be with hearts that are softened and sub-
dued by such thoughts as these: 'God is here; this is His house. I must have
pure thoughts and the holiest motives. I must have no pride, envy, jealousy,
evil surmising, hatred, or deception in my heart, for I am coming into the
presence of the holy God. This is the place where God meets with and
blesses His people. The high and holy One who inhabiteth eternity looks
upon me, searches my heart, and reads the most secret thoughts and acts of
my life." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 494.

r 2. What should we all consider when entering God's house of worship?

Exodus 25:8; Psalms 77:13; 89:7.

"There are those who conduct themselves in [God's] house as they

would not presume to do in the audience chamber of an earthly ruler. These
should remember that they are in His sight whom seraphim adore, before
whom angels veil their faces. God is greatly to be reverenced; all who truly
realize His presence will bow in humility before Him, and, like Jacob
beholding the vision of God, they will cry out, 'How dreadful is this place!
This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.' "
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 252.

HEAVENLY ORDER August 14

3. How can true reverence for God be fostered even in small groups
assembling for worship? Isaiah 66:1,2; John 4:24; Matthew 18:20.

"The hour and place of prayer are sacred, because God is there. And as
reverence is manifested in attitude and demeanor, the feeling that inspires it
will be deepened."-Prophets and Kings, pp. 48, 49.

4. What should characterize every aspect of the worship of God, includ-

ing the premises where worshipers meet? Leviticus 26:2; 1 Corin-
thians 14:40.

"[God] will have a clean and a holy people in whom He can delight. ...
I saw that the house of God had been desecrated by the carelessness of par-
ents with their children and by the untidiness and uncleanness there. I saw
that these things should meet with an open rebuke, and if there was not an
immediate change in some that profess the truth in these things they should
be put out of the camp. "-Selected Messages, book 3, pp. 273, 274.

PRINCIPLES OF WORSHIP August 15

5. What can we, who are living in the antitypical Day of Atonement,
learn from the worship of God in"Old Testament times? 1 Corin-
thians 10:11.

"From the sacredness which was attached to the earthly sanctuary,

Christians may learn how they should regard the place where the Lord
meets with His people."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 491.
"In the sanctuary and the temple, that were the earthly symbols of
God's dwelling· place, one apartment was sacred to His presence. The veil
inwrought with cherubim at its entrance was not to be lifted by any hand
save one. To lift that veil and intrude unbidden into the sacred mystery of
the most holy place was death. For above the mercy seat and the bowed,
worshiping angels dwelt the glory of the Holiest, glory upon which no man
might look and live. On the one day of the year appointed for ministry in the
most holy place, the high priest with trembling entered God's presence,
while clouds of incense veiled the glory from his sight. Throughout the
courts of the temple every sound was hushed. No priests ministered at the
altars. The hosts of worshipers, bowed in silent awe, sent up their petitions
for God's mercy."-Ibid., vol. 8, pp. 284, 285.
"We have abundant reason to maintain a fervent, devoted spirit in the
worship of God. We have reason even to be more thoughtful and reverential
in our worship than had the Jews."-Ibid., vol. 5, p. 496.

6. What essential point is carelessly overlooked by many professed

Sabbathkeepers? Ecclesiastes 5:1, 2; Habakkuk 2:20.

- 34-
"The precincts of the church should be invested with a sacred reverence."
- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 494.
"When the word is spoken, you should remember, brethren, that you
are listening to the voice of God through His delegated servant. Listen atten-
tively.... Sometimes young men and women have so little reverence for
the house and worship of God that they keep up a continual communication
with each other during the sermon. Could these see the angels of God look-
ing upon them and marking their doings, they would be filled with shame,
with abhorrence of themselves."-Ibid., p. 493.
"Common talking, whispering, and laughing should not be permitted in
the house of worship, either before or after the service."-Ibid., p. 492.

FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED August 16

7. What do we learn from faithful Esther about the significance of

one's apparel? Esther 5:1, 2 (first part). How can a balanced under-
standing of this principle apply to our meetings with the King of the
universe?

"In the minds of many there are no more sacred thoughts connected with
the house of God than with the most common place. Some will enter the place
of worship with their hats on, in soiled, dirty clothes. Such do not realize that
they are to meet with God and holy angels.... Because of the irreverence in
attitude, dress, and deportment, and lack of a worshipful frame of mind, God
has often turned His face away from those assembled for His worship.
"All should be taught to be neat, clean, and orderly in their dress, but
not to indulge in that external adorning which is wholly inappropriate for the
sanctuary. There should be no display of apparel; for this encourages irrev-
erence. The attention of the people is often called to this or that fine article
of dress, and thus thoughts are intruded that should have no place in the
hearts of the worshipers. God is to be the subject of thought, the object of
worship; and anything that attracts the mind from the solemn, sacred serv-
ice is an offense to Him."- Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 498, 499.

8. Describe the type of music appropriate for the worship of God.

Isaiah 30:29.

"Those who make singing a part of the divine worship should select
hymns with music appropriate to the occasion, not funeral notes, but cheer-
ful, yet solemn melodies. The voice can and should be modulated, softened,
and subdued."-Evangelism, p. 508.
"All the service should be conducted with solemnity and awe, as if in
the visible presence of the Master of assemblies. "-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 493.

GUIDING THE WHOLE FAMILY August 17

9. What are some of the basic lessons that families need to understand
about worshipping God? Psalms 95:3-6; 100:3, 4.

- 35-
"It is too true that reverence for the house of God has become almost
extinct....
"Nearly all need to be taught how to conduct themselves in the house of
God. Parents should not only teach, but command, their children to enter the
sanctuary with sobriety and reverence.
"The moral taste of the worshipers in God's holy sanctuary must be
elevated, refined, sanctified. This matter has been sadly neglected. Its im-
portance has been overlooked, and as the result, disorder and irreverence
have become prevalent, and God has been dishonored. When the leaders in
the church, ministers and people, fathers and mothers, have not had ele-
vated views of this matter, what could be expected of the inexperienced
children? They are too often found in groups, away from the parents, who
should have charge of them. Notwithstanding they are in the presence of
God, and His eye is looking upon them, they are light and trifling, they
whisper and laugh, are careless, irreverent, and inattentive. They are
seldom instructed that the minister is God's ambassador, that the message
he brings is one of God's appointed agencies in the salvation of souls."-
Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 495-497.

10. Why is it so important that we understand how to properly worship

the God of heaven? Isaiah 1:12, 13; Ephesians 5:17.

"Unless correct ideas of true worship and true reverence are impressed
upon the people, there will be a growing tendency to place the sacred and
eternal on a level with common things, and those professing the truth will be
an offense to God and a disgrace to religion. They can never, with their
uncultivated ideas, appreciate a pure and holy heaven, and be prepared to
join with the worshipers in the heavenly courts above, where all is purity and
perfection, where every being has perfect reverence for God and His
holiness."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 500.

A BLESSING PRONOUNCED August 20

1. How and why does God explicitly state His will for mankind regard-
ing the seventh day of the week? Genesis 2:1-3; Exodus 20:8-11.

"In the fourth commandment, God is revealed as the Creator of the

heavens and the earth, and is thereby distinguished from all false gods. It
was as a memorial of the work of creation that the seventh day was sanc-
tified as a rest day for man. It was designed to keep the living God ever
before the minds of men as the source of being and the object of reverence
and worship."- The Great Controversy, pp. 53, 54.
"The seventh day is God's chosen day. He has not left this matter to be
remodeled by priest or ruler. It is of too great importance to be left to human
judgment. God saw that men would study their own convenience, and choose
a day best suited to their inclinations, a day bearing no divine authority; and
He has stated plainly that the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord."-
Maranatha, p. 238.

2. Why is God so deserving of our worship on the memorial of His

creation? Psalm 111:2,4.

"When the foundations of the earth were laid, when the morning stars
sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy, then was laid the
foundation for the Sabbath.... Well may this institution demand our rever-
ence; it was ordained by no human authority and "rests upon no human tradi-
tions; it was established by the Ancient of Days and commanded by His eter-
nal word." - The Great Controversy, p. 455.

A CUSTOM-MADE GIFT August 21

3. For whom was the Sabbath made, and why? Mark 2:27,28.

"The Sabbath was made for man, to be a blessing to him by calling his
mind from secular labor to contemplate the goodness and glory of God. It is
necessary that the people of God assemble to talk of Him, to interchange
thoughts and ideas in regard to the truths contained in His word, and to
devote a portion of time to appropriate prayer." - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 583.
"The Sabbath-oh! make it the sweetest, the most blessed day of the
whole week.... Parents can and should give attention to their children,
reading to them the most attractive portions of Bible history, educating
them to reverence the Sabbath day, keeping it according to the command-
ment.... They can make the Sabbath a delight if they will take the proper
course. The children can be interested in good reading or in conversation
about the salvation of their souls." -My Life Today, p. 287.

4. In these busy, fast-paced last days, how will the true Christian
reveal his appreciation of God's special gift of Sabbath time?
Psalms 8:3, 4; 92:5, 6.

"Many seem to begrudge moments spent in meditation, and the search-

ing of the Scriptures, and prayer, as though the time thus occupied was lost.
I wish you could all view these things in the light that God would have you;
for you would then make the kingdom of Heaven of the first importance."-
Sons and Daughters of God, p. 109. .
"The world, filled with sport and pleasure-loving, is always thirsting for
some new interest. And how little time and thought are given to the Creator
of the heavens and the earth. God calls upon His creatures to turn their
attention from the confusion and perplexity around them, and admire His
handiwork."-Ibid., p. 110.
"You will ever find with the true Christian a marked cheerfulness, a holy,
happy confidence in God, a submission to His providences, that is refreshing
to the soul. By the Christian, God's love and benevolence can be seen in every
bounty he receives. The beauties in nature are a theme for contemplation. In
studying the natural loveliness surrounding us, the mind is carried up
through nature to the Author of all that is lovely." - Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 377.

HONORING THE CREATOR AND REDEEMER August 22

5. How will God's people honor Him on the Sabbath day? Isaiah 56: 1,
2; 58:13, 14; Matthew 11:28-30.

"To all who receive the Sabbath as a sign of Christ's creative and
redeeming power, it will be a delight. Seeing Christ in it, they delight
themselves in Him. The Sabbath points them to the works of creation as an

- 38-
evidence of His mighty power in redemption. While it calls to mind the lost
peace of Eden, it tells of peace restored through the Saviour." - The Desire of
Ages, p. 289.
" 'Remember' is placed at the very first of the fourth commandment.
Parents, you need to remember the Sabbath day yourselves to keep it holy.
And if you do this, you are giving the proper instruction to your children;
they will reverence God's holy day."-My Life Today, p. 287.
6. What solemn warning is given against hallowing a counterfeit Sab-
bath of man's devising? Revelation 14:9-11. What does true
seventh-day Sabbathkeeping reveal about our relationship with
God? Exodus 31:13-17; Ezekiel 20:12, 20.

"The Sabbath given to the world as the sign of God as the Creator is
also the sign of Him as the Sanctifier. The power that created all things is
the power that re-creates the soul in His own likeness. To those who keep
the Sabbath day it is the sign of sanctification. True sanctification is har-
mony with God, oneness with Him in character. It is received through obe-
dience to those principles that are the transcript of His character. And the
Sabbath is the sign of obedience. He who from the heart obeys the fourth
commandment will obey the whole law. He is sanctified through obedience.
To us as to Israel the Sabbath is given 'for a perpetual covenant.' To those
who reverence His holy day the Sabbath is a sign that God recognizes them
as His chosen people."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 350.

PREPARING FOR REST August 23

7. How does the Lord calculate the beginning and end of a day?
Genesis 1:5 (last part); Leviticus 23:32.

8. What type of activities should be finished before sunset on the sixth

day of the week? Exodus 16:4, 5, 23; Mark 15:42; Luke 23:56.

"All through the week we are to have the Sabbath in mind and be mak-
ing preparation to keep it according to the commandment." - Testimonies, vol. 6,
p.353.
"The precious words might well be often repeated: 'My soul, wait thou
only upon God; for my expectation is from Him.' Psalm 62:5. When the Sab-
bath is thus remembered, the temporal will not be allowed to encroach upon
the spiritual. No duty pertaining to the six working days will be left for the
Sabbath. During the week our energies will not be so exhausted in temporal
labor that on the day when the Lord rested and was refreshed we shall be too
weary to engage in His service.
"While preparation for the Sabbath is to be made all through the week,
Friday is to be the special preparation day."-Ibid., p. 354.
"The Sabbath is not to be given to the repairing of garments, to the
cooking of food, to pleasure seeking, or to any other worldly employment.
Before the setting of the sun let all secular work be laid aside and all secular

- 39-
papers be put out of sight.... We should jealously guard the edges of the
Sabbath. Remember that every moment is consecrated, holy time."-Ibid.,
pp. 355, 356.

TRUE SABBATHKEEPING August 24

9. What important activity did Jesus include on the Sabbath day?

John 5:5-9; Luke 6:9, 10.

"According to the fourth commandment the Sabbath was dedicated to

rest and religious worship. All secular employment was to be suspended, but
works of mercy and benevolence were in accordance with the purpose of the
Lord. They were not to be limited to time or place. To relieve the afflicted,
to comfort the sorrowing, is a labor of love that does honor to God's holy
day."- Welfare Ministry, p. 77.

10. How is God's sign and seal of sanctification to be manifest in our

lives every day of the week? 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 4:3, 4; Revela-
tion 14:4, 5, 12.

"We are not merely to observe the Sabbath as a legal matter. We are to
understand its spiritual bearing upon all the transactions of life. All who
regard the Sabbath as a sign between them and God, showing that He is the
God who sanctifies them, will represent the principles of His government.
They will bring into practice the laws of His kingdom. Daily it will be their
prayer that the sanctification of the Sabbath may rest upon them. Every day
they will have the companionship of Christ and will exemplify the perfection
of His character. Every day their light will shine forth to others in good
works." - Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 353, 354.

The Sacred vs. the Common

"And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy
and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the
clean" (Ezekiel 44:23).

"In order that men may do their best work in showing forth the praises
of God, their associations must be such as will keep the sacred distinct from
the common, in their minds."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 491.

LESSONS FROM BIBLE HISTORY August 27
1. What explicit warnings and reproofs did God give to members of
the priesthood? Leviticus 22:15; Jeremiah 23:11; Ezekiel 22:26.

2. How has the Lord sought to impress His people with the need to
avoid presumption? 1 Samuel 6:19, 20; 2 Samuel 6:1-11.

"Let men of today take warning from the fate of those who in ancient
times presumed to make free with that which God had declared sacred.
When the Israelites ventured to open the ark on its return from the land of
the Philistines, their irreverent daring was signally punished. [1 Samuel
6:19,20 quoted.]
"Again, consider the judgment that fell upon Uzzah. As in David's
reign, the ark was being carried to Jerusalem, Uzzah put forth his hand to
keep it steady. For presuming to touch the symbol of God's presence, he was
smitten with instant death." - Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 283, 284.

MYSTERIES OF GOD August 28
3. What are some of God's greatest mysteries and what should be our
attitude toward them? Exodus 33:17-23; Psalm 33:8.

"I saw a throne, and on it sat the Father and the Son. I gazed on Jesus'
countenance and admired His lovely person. The Father's person I could not
behold, for a cloud of glorious light covered Him. I asked Jesus if His Father
had a form like Himself. He said He had, but I could not behold it, for said
He, 'If you should once behold the glory of His person, you would cease to
exist.' "-Early Writings, p. 54.

- 41-
" 'Those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children
forever;' but 'the secret things belong unto the Lord our God.' Deuteronomy
29:29. The revelation of Himself that God has given in His word is for our
study. This we may seek to understand. But beyond this we are not to
penetrate....
"Even the angels were not permitted to share the counsels between the
Father and the Son when the plan of salvation was laid. Those human beings
who seek to intrude into the secrets of the Most High show their ignorance
of spiritual and eternal things. Far better might they, while mercy's voice is
still heard, humble themselves in the dust and plead with God to teach them
His ways."- Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 279.
4. What great mystery does God intend for us to understand, and
what is our sacred obligation in light of this truth? 1 Timothy 3:16;
2 Corinthians 7:1. Describe how the early Advent believers gained
deeper insight in their understanding of God's holy Word.

"We would come together burdened in soul, praying that we might be

one in faith and doctrine; for we knew that Christ is not divided. One point at
a time was made the subject of investigation. The Scriptures were opened
with a sense of awe. Often we fasted, that we might be better fitted to
understand the truth. After earnest prayer, if any point was not understood
it was discussed, and each one expressed his opinion freely; then we would
again bow in prayer, and earnest supplications went up to heaven that God
would help us to see eye to eye, that we might be one as Christ and the
Father are one. Many tears were shed."- Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 24, 25.

MYSTERIES OF DARKNESS August 29

5. Name some of the various disguises with which the enemy of souls
mysteriously cloaks his power in these last days. Revelation 17:1-
5; 13:11-14; 16:13, 14; 2 Corinthians 11:14.

"One of the chief causes of mental inefficiency and moral weakness is

the lack of concentration for worthy ends.... With the immense tide of
printed matter constantly pouring from the press, old and young form the
habit of reading hastily and superficially, and the mind loses its power of
connected and vigorous thought. Furthermore, a large share of the perio-
dicals and books that, like the frogs of Egypt, are overspreading the land,
are not merely commonplace, idle, and enervating, but unclean and degrad-
ing. Their effect is not merely to intoxicate and ruin the mind, but to corrupt
and destroy the soul." -Education, pp. 189, 190.

6. What careless attitude can sweep professed believers and their

children straight into the clutches of the .enemy? Ephesians 5:3, 4.

"Many heads of families make the [church] service a subject of crit-

icism at home, approving a few things and condemning others. Thus the

-42 -
message of God to men is criticized and questioned, and made a subject of
levity. 'Vhat impressions are thus made upon the young by these careless,
irreverent remarks the books of heaven alone will reveal. The children see
and understand these things very much quicker than parents are apt to
think." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 497.
"Our present habits and customs, which dishonor God and bring the
sacred and heavenly down to the level of the common, are against us. We
have a sacred, testing, sanctifying truth; and if our habits and practices are
not in accordance with the truth, we are sinners against great light, and are
proportionately guilty. It will be far more tolerable for the heathen in the day
of God's retributive justice than for us."-Ibid., p. 495.

D Wednesday
SACRED OR COMMON FIRE? August 30

7. How did the Lord impress His people with the sacredness of the
temple services? Leviticus 6:8-13; 10:1, 2, 8-10.

"Nadab and Abihu would never have committed that fatal sin had they
not first become partially intoxicated by the free use of wine. They under-
stood that the most careful and solemn preparation was necessary before
presenting themselves in the sanctuary, where the divine Presence was
manifested; but by intemperance they were disqualified for their holy office.
Their minds became confused and their moral perceptions dulled so that they
could not discern the difference between the sacred and the common."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 361, 362.
"God designed to teach the people that they must approach Him with
reverence and awe, and in His own appointed manner. He cannot accept par-
tial obedience. It was not enough that in this solemn season of worship nearly
everything was done as He had directed. God has pronounced a curse upon
those who depart from His commandments, and put no difference between
common and holy things."-Ibid., p. 360. [Author's italics.]

8. What warnings should be heeded from this principle today? Isaiah

50:11.

"Many will stand in our pulpits with the torch of false prophecy in their
hands, kindled from the hellish torch of Satan. If doubts and unbelief are
cherished, the faithful ministers will be removed from the people who think
they know so much."- Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 409, 410.
"It is not true that brilliant young men always make the greatest success.
How often men of talent and education have been placed in positions of trust,
and have proved failures. Their glitter had the appearance of gold, but when it
was tried, it proved to be but tinsel and dross.... They were not willing to
begin at the bottom of the ladder, and with patient toil, ascend round aft~r
round till they reached the top. They walked in the sparks (their bright flashes
of thought) of their own kindling. They did not depend on the wisdom which
God alone can give." -Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 193.

SEPARATION FROM SIN AND SINNERS August 31

9. What trend is currently being promoted by the religious world, and

how does the Lord expect His people to respond to it? Isaiah 8:12,
13; James 4:4; Ezekiel 44:23.

"You know what a confederacy is-a union of men in a work that does
not bear the stamp of pure, straightforward, unswerving integrity."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1142.
"We can afford to lose the friendship of worldly men. Those who join
themselves to worldly men, that they may carry out their unsanctified purposes,
make a fearful mistake; for they forfeit the favor and blessing of God....
"There is no such thing as maintaining concord between the profane
and the holy. There can be no concord between Christ and BeliaL" - This Day
With God, p. 354.

10. What has the Lord consistently directed His chosen ones to do?
Genesis 12:1, 4; 2 Corinthians 6:17, 18. Why is this especially
important during the sealing time now taking place? Revelation
18:4,5.

"[T]he Lord Himself has placed a wall of separation between the world
and that which He has established on the earth. God's people are to serve
Him, for Christ has called them out of the world, and sanctified and refined
them, that they may do His service.... And this consecration to the Lord,
this separation from the world, is plainly declared and positively enjoined in
both the Old and the New Testaments."-This Day With God, p. 354.
"The [sealing] angel is to place a mark [the seal of God] upon the fore-
head of all who are separated from sin and sinners, and the destroying angel
will follow, to slay utterly both old and young."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 505.

A FIRST BASIC STEP September 3
1. Describe the implications of God's fifth commandment and the
blessing promised to the obedient. Ephesians 6:1-3. Why is Satan
so eager to undermine this commandment?

"Parents are entitled to a degree of love and respect which is due to no

other person. God Himself, who has placed upon them a responsibility for
the souls committed to their charge, has ordained that during the earlier
years of life, parents shall stand in the place of God to their children. And he
who rejects the rightful authority of his parents is rejecting the authority of
God. The fifth commandment requires children not only to yield respect,
submission, and obedience to their parents, but also to give them love and
tenderness, to lighten their cares, to guard their reputation, and to succor
and comfort them in old age."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 308.
"To the great principle of love and loyalty to God, the Father of all, the
principle of filial love and obedience is closely related. Contempt for parental
authority will soon lead to contempt for the authority of God. Hence Satan's
efforts to lessen the obligation of the fifth commandment."-Ibid., p. 337.

2. Who else is to be included in this commandment? 1 Peter 5:5 (first

part); Leviticus 19:32.

A GOD-FEARING UNIT September 4
3. Describe God's plan for husbands and wives. Ephesians 5:22-33;
1 Peter 3:1-7; Colossians 3:18, 19. According to counsels and
reproofs given by Inspiration, explain how this plan is often violated.

"Licentiousness is the special sin of this age." - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 346.

"There is a sacred circle around every family which should be preserved.
No other one has any right in that sacred circle."- The Adventist Home, p. 177.

-45 -
"How careful should the husband and father be to maintain his loyalty
to his marriage vows! ... I have been shown families where the husband
and father has not preserved that reserve, that dignified, godlike manhood
which is befitting a follower of Christ." -Ibid., pp. 336, 337.
"[Brother N,] I was shown that Satan took advantage of you because
your wife did not embrace the truth. You were thrown into the society of a
corrupt woman, one whose steps take hold on hell. She professed great sym-
pathy for you because of the opposition you received from your wife....
You went for sympathy to this apparent angel in speech. You poured into her
ears that which should have been entrusted alone to your wife whom you had
vowed to love, honor, and cherish as long as you both should live. You forgot
to watch and pray always lest you should enter into temptation." - Testimonies,
vol. 2, p. 89. [Author's italics.]
"Oh, how many lives are made bitter by the breaking down of the walls
which inclose the privacies of every family, and which are calculated to
preserve its purity and sanctity! ...
"When a woman relates her family troubles or complains of her hus-
band to another man, she violates her marriage vows; she dishonors her hus-
band and breaks down the wall erected to preserve the sanctity of the mar-
riage relation." - The Adventist Home, pp. 337, 338.
4·. What kind of family pleases God? Joshua 24:15 (last part).

"Angels delight in a home where God reigns supreme, and the children
are taught to reverence religion, the Bible, and their Creator."-Testimonies,
vol. 5, p. 424.
"The sacred privilege of communing with God makes distinct and clear
the sight of the glorious things prepared for-those who love God and rever-
ence His commandments. We need to bring reverence into our daily lives."-
My Life Today, p. 284.
D Tuesday
A SPECIAL CHALLENGE September 5
5. What problem is seriously intensifying in these last days of earth's
history? 2 Timothy 3:2; Lamentations 4:16 (last part). How are we
to meet this challenge? Ephesians 6:13.
"Anciently, parental authority was regarded; children were then in subjec-
tion to their parents, and feared and reverenced them; but in these last days the
order is reversed. Some parents are in subjection to their children. They fear
to cross the will of their children, and therefore yield to them. But just as long
as children are under the roof of the parents, dependent upon them, they
should be subject to their control. Parents should move with decision, requir-
ing that their views of right be followed out."-Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 216, 217.
6. What solemn warning must be taken into account by adults, also
regarding their relationship with children and youth? Luke 17:1, 2.
"The salvation of children depends very much upon the course pursued
by the parents. In their mistaken love and fondness for their children, many
parents indulge them to their hurt."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 217.

- 46-
"Some children, as they grow older, think it a matter of course that
they must have their own way, and that their parents must submit to their
wishes. They expect their parents to wait upon them.... The parents have
borne the burden, and have suffered them to grow up in idleness, without
habits of order, industry, or economy. They have not been taught habits of
self-denial, but have been petted and indulged, their appetites gratified....
Many children will rise up in judgment and condemn their parents for not
restraining them."-Ibid., p. 219.

TRUE HOME DISCIPLINE September 6

7. In the Elijah message of the last days, who is affected first? Malachi
4:5, 6 (first part); Deuteronomy 6:6-8; Proverbs 23: 13, 14. How
does the church suffer when parents fail to respond to this call?

"Children who are ... brought up undisciplined, have everything to

learn when they profess to be Christ's followers. Their whole religious expe-
rience is affected by their bringing up in childhood. The same self-will often
appears; there is the same lack of self-denial, the same impatience under
reproof, the same love of self and unwillingness to seek counsel of others, or
to be influenced by others' judgment, the same indolence, shunning of bur-
dens, lack of bearing responsibilities. All this is seen in their relation to the
church. It is possible for such to overcome, but how hard the battle! how
severe the conflict! How hard to pass through the course of thorough disci-
pline which is necessary for them to reach the elevation of Christian
character!"- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 219.

8. Describe the careful balance needed in raising children for God.

Ephesians 6:4; Proverbs 29:15.

"Parents should have perfect control over their own spirits, and with
mildness and yet firmness bend the will of the child until it shall expect
nothing else but to yield to their wishes." - Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 218.
"The family firm is a sacred, social society, in which each member is to
act a part, each helping the other."-The Adventist Home, p. 179.
"Parents should not permit business cares, worldly customs and max-
ims, and fashion to have a controlling power over them, so that they neglect
their children in babyhood and fail to give their children proper instruction
as they increase in years." -Ibid., p. 183.

ENLARGING THE TENTS September 7

9. What can we learn from Abraham and his family? Genesis 18:19.

"It is the duty of those who claim to be Christians to present to the

world well-ordered, well-disciplined families-families that will show the
power of true Christianity."-Child Guidance, p. 233.

- 47-
"A well-disciplined family, who love and obey God, will be cheerful and
happy. The father, when he returns from his daily labor, will not bring his
perplexities to his home. He will feel that home, and the family circle, are
too sacred to be marred with unhappy perplexities. When he left his home,
he did not leave °his Saviour and his religion behind. Both were his compan-
ions. The sweet influence of his home, the blessing of his wife, and love of
his children, make his burdens light, and he returns with peace in his heart,
and cheerful encouraging words for his wife and children, who are waiting to
joyfully welcome his coming. As he bows with his family, at the altar of
prayer, to offer up his grateful thanks to God, for His preserving care of
himself and loved ones through the day, angels of God hover in the room,
and bear the fervent prayers of God-fearing parents to Heaven, as sweet in-
cense, which are answered by returning blessings." -Selected Messages, book 2,
pp. 439, 440.

10. What promises, extended to believers not blessed with the privilege
of Christian family ties, imply a responsibility for the church?
Isaiah 56:4-7; 54:1-3; Job 29:15, 16.

"Brethren and sisters, invite to your homes those who are in need of
entertainment and kindly attention. Make no parade; but, as you see their
necessity, take them in and show them genuine Christian hospitality."-
Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 347.
"If we would follow Jesus we cannot restrict our interest and affection
to ourselves and our own families; we cannot give our time and attention to
temporal matters and forget the eternal interests of those around us. I have
been shown that it is the result of our own selfishness that there are not one
hundred young men where now there is one engaged in earnest labor for the
salvation of their fellow men." -Ibid., vol. 5, pp. 34, 35.

IN THE BODY OF CHRIST September 10

1. Explain the timeless lessons taught in the Scriptures regarding the

appropriate treatment of God's aged servants. Proverbs 16:31;
Numbers 12:1-10; 2 Kings 2:22-24.

"Reverence should be shown for God's representatives-for ministers,

teachers, and parents who are called to speak and act in His stead. In the
respect shown to them He is honored." -Education, p. 244.
"Parents mourn over the hardness of heart in their children and the dif-
ficulty in arousing their moral sensibility to answer to the claims of God. But
the books of heavenly record trace with unerring pen the true cause....
Their low, common ideas of the sacredness of the ministry and of the sanc-
tuary of God were woven into the education of their children." - Testimonies,
vol. 5, p. 497.
"Parents, be careful what example and what ideas you give your chil-
dren. Their minds are plastic, and impressions are easily made. In regard to
the service of the sanctuary, if the speaker has a blemish, be afraid to men-
tion it. Talk only of the good work he is doing, of the good ideas he pre-
sented, which you should heed as coming through God's agent. It may be
readily seen why children are so little impressed with the ministry of the
word and why they have so little reverence for the house of God. Their edu-
cation has been defective in this respect." -Ibid., p. 498.

2. Who are cited as worthy recipients of heartfelt appreciation, and

why? 1 Timothy 5:17-19; Hebrews 13:17.

"Many do not realize the sacredness of church relationship and are

loath to submit to restraint and discipline. Their course of action shows that
they exalt their own judgment above that of the united church, and they are

-49 -
not careful to guard themselves lest they encourage a spirit of opposition to
its voice. Those who hold responsible positions in the church may have
faults in common with other people and may err in their decisions; but not-
withstanding this, the church of Christ on earth has given to them an author-
ity that cannot be lightly esteemed. Christ, after His resurrection, delegated
power unto His church, saying, 'Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remit-
ted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained.' ...
"Every believer should be wholehearted in his attachment to the
church. Its prosperity should be his first interest, and unless he feels under
sacred obligations to make his connection with the church a benefit to it in
preference to himself, it can do far better without him." - Testimonies, vol. 4,
pp. 17, 18.

who fully intended to kill him? 1 Samuel 24:4-6; 26:8, 9.

4. Describe the immediate effect David's attitude had upon Saul, at

least temporarily. 1 Samuel 24:16-19; 26:21-25.

"[1 Samuel 26:21 quoted.] This second instance of David's respect for
his sovereign's life made a still deeper impression upon the mind of Saul and
brought from him a more humble acknowledgment of his fault. He was
astonished and subdued at the manifestation of such kindness." -Patriarchs

EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES September 12

5. What appeal did the apostle Paul make to Philemon concerning his
wayward servant? Philemon 15-16. What principles can employers
learn from this? Matthew 5:7; Philippians 2:4; Colossians 4:1.

"Have you, who have hired help, let your light shine to your workmen,
that they, too, may be laborers together with God? God has given you
precious privileges and advantages in sending you the light of His truth, and
you are to improve these blessings, and let others share your mercies."-
Reflecting Christ, p. 206.

6. How do the Scriptures teach also respect towards all types of mas-
ters and employers? Colossians 3:22, 23; 1 Timothy 6: 1, 2; 1 Peter
2:18-20.

"Be faithful in deal, thorough in labor, ever bearing in mind that it is not
your employer's eye alone that is to inspect your work, but that the eye of
God is upon all the transactions of your life. Angels of God are viewing your
work, and it should be a part of your religion to have every piece of work
marked with truth and faithfulness."-Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 78.

CIVIL AUTHORITIES September 13

7. How do the manners of the ungodly present a sharp contrast to the

Christian attitude toward civil authorities and laws? Jude 8; 1 Peter
2:13, 14, 17; Romans 13:1,2.

"It is not wise to find fault continually with what is done by the rulers of
government. It is not our work to attack individuals or institutions. We
should exercise great care lest we be understood as putting ourselves in
opposition to the civil authorities....
"We should not work in a manner that will mark us out as seeming to
advocate treason. We should weed out from our writings and utterances
every expression that, taken by itself, could be so misrepresented as to make
it appear antagonistic to law and order....
"The time will come when unguarded expressions of a denunciatory
character, that have been carelessly spoken or written by our brethren, will
be used by our enemies to condemn us. These will not be used merely to con-
demn those who made the statements, but will be charged upon the whole
body of Adventists.... Let all beware lest by reckless expressions they
bring on a time of trouble before the great crisis which is to try men's souls."
- Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 394, 395.
"Let God have the matter of condemning authorities and governments
wholly in His own keeping."-Ibid., p. 397.

8. What advice does Paul give concerning our duty towards the
authorities? 1 Timothy 2:1; Titus 3:1. Describe the tenderness
shown by Paul toward the jailer who was persecuting him. Acts
16:23-28.

"The severity with which the jailer had treated the apostles had not
aroused their resentment. Paul and Silas had the spirit of Christ, not the spirit
of revenge. Their hearts, filled with the love of the Saviour, had no room for
malice against their persecutors." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 216.

AN EXEMPLARY ATTITUDE September 14

9. How do we treat those whom we think are in error or spiritual dark-

ness? Ecclesiastes 7:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:14, 15; 2 Timothy 2:24-26.

"There are some who indulge in levity, sarcasm, and even mockery
toward those who differ with them....We should beware of indulging the
spirit which controlled the Jews. They would not learn of Christ, because
His explanation of the Scriptures did not agree with their ideas."- Testimonies
to Ministers, p. 108.
"Some persons speak in a harsh, uncourteous manner, that wounds the
feelings of others, and then they justify themselves by saying, 'It is my way;

- 51-
I always tell just what I think'; and they exalt this wicked trait of character
as a virtue. Their uncourteous deportment should be firmly rebuked.
"That unkind word should be left unspoken, that selfish disregard for
the happiness of others should give place to sympathy and thoughtfulness."
-Our High Calling, p. 229.
"Let us pray, not only for ourselves, but for those who have hurt us, and
are continuing to hurt us."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments],
vol. 3, p. 1141.

10. Describe the consistent attitude of Christ toward His religious per-
secutors. Matthew 5:44; John 18:23. What was His attitude
toward the devil? Jude 9.

"[While hanging on the cross], the Saviour made no murmur of com-

plaint. His face remained calm and serene, but great drops of sweat stood
upon His brow. There was no pitying hand to wipe the death dew from His
face, nor words of sympathy and unchanging fidelity to stay His human
heart. While the soldiers were doing their fearful work, Jesus prayed for His
enemies, 'Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.' His mind
passed from His own suffering to the sin of His persecutors, and the terrible
retribution that would be theirs. No curses were called down upon the sol-
diers who were handling Him so roughly. No vengeance was invoked upon
the priests and rulers, who were gloating over the accomplishment of their
purpose. Christ pitied them in their ignorance and guilt. He breathed only a
plea for their forgiveness- 'for they know not what they do.' "- The Desire of
Ages, p. 744.

Enoch? Genesis 5:24 (first part); Hebrews 11:5.

"Pray in your closet, and as you go about your daily labor let your heart
be often uplifted to God. It was thus that Enoch walked with God. These
silent prayers rise like precious incense before the throne of grace. Satan
cannot overcome him whose heart is thus stayed upon God."-Steps to Christ,
pp. 98, 99.

2. How did the experience of Enoch connect reverence for God's pres-
ence with the true sanctification of souls preparing for translation
in these last days? Genesis 5:24; 1 John 3:2, 3.

"Enoch kept the Lord ever before him, and the Inspired Word says that
he 'walked with God.' He made Christ his constant companion. He was in
the world, and performed his duties to the world; but he was ever under the
influence of Jesus. He reflected Christ's character, exhibiting the same
qualities of goodness, mercy, tender compassion, sympathy, forbearance,
meekness, humility, and love. His association with Christ day by day trans-
formed him into the image of Him with whom he was so intimately con-
nected. Day by day he was growing away from his own way into Christ's
way, the heavenly, the divine, in his thoughts and feelings. He was constant-
ly inquiring, Is this the way of the Lord? His was a constant growth, and he
had fellowship with the Father and the Son. This is genuine sanctification."
-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, pp. 1097, 1098.
"In the midst of a world by its iniquity doomed to destruction, Enoch
lived a life of such close communion with God that he was not permitted to
fall under the power of death.... As Enoch was translated to heaven before

- 53-
the destruction of the world by water, so the living righteous will be trans-
lated from the earth before its destruction by fire."-Patriarchs and Prophets,
pp. 88, 89.

CLEANLINESS AND PURITY September 18

3. What is God's plan for His chosen people, and what outward re-
quirement does He enjoin upon them in their preparation to meet
Him in peace? Exodus 19:10,11.

"There is a class who are continually harping upon pride and dress,
who are careless of their own apparel, and who think it a virtue to be dirty,
and dress without order and taste; and their clothing often looks as if it flew
and lit upon their persons. Their garments are filthy, and yet such ones will
ever be talking against pride. They class decency and neatness with pride."
-Child Guidance, p. 415.
"The Lord commanded the children of Israel to wash their clothes and
put away all impurity from their encampment, lest in passing by He should
see their uncleanness. God is passing by our homes today, and He looks
upon the unsanitary conditions of families and the lax habits. Had we not
better reform, and that without delay?" -Ibid., p. 106.
"If God was so particular to enjoin cleanliness upon those journeying in
the wilderness, who were in the open air nearly all the time, He requires no
less of us who live in ceiled houses, where impurities are more observable
and have a more unhealthful influence." -Counsels on Health, p. 82.

4. What does this cleanliness symbolize? Revelation 19:8; Matthew

5:8; 1 Timothy 5:22 (last part).

"I saw that God would not acknowledge an untidy, unclean person as a
Christian. His frown was upon such. Our souls, bodies, and spirits are to be
presented blameless by Jesus to His Father, and unless we are clean in per-
son, and pure, we cannot be presented blameless to God. I saw that the
houses of the saints should be kept tidy and neat, free from dirt and filth and
all uncleanness." -Selected Messages, book 3, pp. 273, 274.
"Unclean, neglected corners in the house will tend to make impure,
neglected corners in the soul." -Child Guidance, p. 114.
"Impurity of thought, word, or action will not be indulged by the child
of God. Every encouragement and the richest blessings are held up before
the overcomers of evil practices, but the most fearful penalties are laid upon
those who profane the body and defile the soul."-Counsels to Parents, Teachers,
and Students, p. 103.

DEPORTMENT, DEMEANOR, AND DRESS September 19

5. Name some of the Christian characteristics to be instilled from the

time of youth. Titus 2:11-14; 3:2.

- 54-
"The world will judge us by what we appear to be. Let those who are
seeking to represent Christ be careful not to exhibit inconsistent features of
character.... In meekness and love let us as faithful sentinels defend the
principles of truth as it is in Jesus."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 397.

6. Describe the simple, balanced perspective on dress to be con-

sidered by all of Christ's followers in the antitypical Day of Atone-
ment. 1 Timothy 2:9, 10.

"Our words, our actions, and our dress are daily, living preachers, gath-
ering with Christ or scattering abroad. This is no trivial matter to be passed
off with a jest. The subject of dress demands serious reflection and much
prayer....
"Your dress is telling either in favor of Christ and the sacred truth or in
favor of the world. Which is it? Remember we must all answer to God for the
influence we exert."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 641.
"There is a decided contradiction between the love of outward adorning
and the grace of meekness, the quiet spirit. It is only when we seek in all
things to conform to the will of God that peace and joy will reign in the soul."
-Ibid., p. 645.

A CIRCUMSPECT LIFE September 20

7. Explain the long-forgotten theme underlying the basic character-

istics to be cultivated by Christians of all ages. Titus 2:1-7.

"We are living in perilous times. Seventh-day Adventists are professed-

ly the commandment-keeping people of God; but they are losing their devo-
tional spirit. This spirit of reverence for God teaches men how to approach
their Maker-with sacredness and awe through faith, not in themselves, but

I in a Mediator. Thus man is kept fast, under whatever circumstances he is

placed." -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 314.

8. What kind of speech will characterize a true Christian? Ephesians

5:17,20. Name the irreverent speech habits of today which are in
contrast to the spirit of the Gospel. Ephesians 5:4 (first part).

"When men cast off the fear of God they are not long in departing from
honor and integrity."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 557.
"Be careful how you speak. Be careful how you represent the religion
you have accepted. You may feel it no sin to gossip and talk nonsense, but
this grieves your Saviour, and saddens the heavenly angels."-Fundamentals
of Christian Education, p. 457.
"Jesting and joking may please a class of cheap minds, and yet the
influence of this kind of conduct is destructive to spirituality. I speak to you
as a class and also as individuals: Guard your words. Let sobriety and sound
common sense characterize your conversation. Do not trifle with the purity

- 55-
and nobility of your souls by condescending to indulgence in stale jokes, and
in cultivating habits of trifling conversation." -Our High Calling, p. 292.

WITNESSING FOR CHRIST September 21

9. When questioned about our faith, how important is our choice of

words with which to respond? Proverbs 15:23, 28 (first part).

"You must respect your own faith in order successfully to introduce it

to others. By example as well as precept, you must show that you reverence
your faith, speaking reverently of sacred things. Never allow one expression
of lightness or trifling to escape your lips when quoting Scripture.... Let
your conduct be such that you will leave the impression upon every soul with
whom you associate that a pure and holy atmosphere surrounds you. One
vain word, one trifling laugh, may balance a soul in the wrong direction. Ter-
rible are the consequences of not having a constant connection with God."-
Fundamentals of Christian Education, pp. 194, 195.

10. Name some essential points in effective witnessing for Christ. Prov-
erbs 15:33; Colossians 4:6. What evidence should we be prepared
to give, and in what manner? 1 Peter 3:15.

"[1 Peter 3:15 quoted.] The fear here spoken of does not mean distrust
or indecision, but with due caution, guarding every point, lest an unwise
word be spoken, or excitement of feeling get the advantage, and thus leave
unfavorable impressions upon minds, and balance them in the wrong direc-
tion. Godly fear, humility, and meekness are greatly needed by all in order to
correctly represent the truth of God."-Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 258, 259.

Lesson 14 Sabbath, September 30, 1995

An Awesome Eternity
"The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever" (Psalm 19:9, first
part).

. "In view of the solemn responsibilities that rest upon us, let us con-
template the future, that we may understand what we must do in order to
meet it." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 343.

D Sunday
A PROPER PERSPECTIVE September 24

1. What important truth did the psalmist realize in the sanctuary?

Psalm 19:9; 73:1-3, 17.

"The despisers of God and His truth may seem to prosper for a time;
but their day of adversity is sure to come. The indifferent, the irreverent,
those who are robbing God of their service, spread themselves in pride, and
boast of their independence. They intrench themselves in resistance of
every appeal that God sends to them; but erelong His hand will be laid upon
them. Their dishonesty, their irreverence, their defiance of heaven, will all
be revealed, and it will be seen that an exact record has been kept, and the
hour of their retribution is come." - The Youth's Instructor, July 21, 1892.

2. In view of the shortness of probationary time remaining, what must

be our attitude? 1 Corinthians 10:12; Psalm 2:11; Isaiah 55:6.

"The time is coming when it will be too late to seek God, and I have
been thinking how we shall feel when probation is closed, and all our life-
work ended. With what feeling shall we review the past? Shall we then wish
that our efforts to serve God had been more earnest? Shall we wish that we
had lived more in harmony with His revealed will? Shall we then be
accounted as faithful servants? What if at this moment we should hear the
voice of Christ saying, 'It is done?' ...
"Those who have made sport of solemn things connected with the judg-
ment, will be sobered as they face its terrible reality. Those who have despised
the Word of God, will then face the Author of the inspired oracles. We can-
not afford to live with no reference to the day of judgment; for though long
delayed, it is now near, even at the door, and hasteth greatly."-Sons and
Daughters of God, p. 343.

AWAKENING TO REALITY September 25

3. What will be the outcome of the wicked, including the most pros..
perous church/state conglomeration on earth? Zechariah 14:12;
Revelation 18:3, 7~10. Describe also the final judgment of professed
Sabbathkeepers who fail to warn them.

"The great day of the execution of God's judgment seemed to have

come....
"The names of all who profess the truth were mentioned. Some were
reproved for their unbelief, others for having been slothful servants. They
had allowed others to do the work in the Master's vineyard, and to bear the
heaviest responsibilities, while they were selfishly serving their own tem-
poral interests. Had they cultivated the abilities God had given them, they
could have been reliable burden bearers, working for the interest of the
Master. Said the Judge: 'All will be justified by their faith and judged by
their works.' How vividly then appeared their neglect, and how wise the
arrangement of God in giving to every man a work to do to promote the
cause and save his fellow men. Each was to demonstrate a living faith in his
family and in his neighborhood, by showing kindness to the poor, sympathiz-
ing with the afflicted, engaging in missionary labor, and by aiding the cause
of God with his means. But, like Meroz, the curse of God rested upon them
for what they had not done. They had loved the work which would bring the
greatest profit in this life; and opposite their names in the ledger devoted to
good works there was a mournful blank.
"The words spoken to these were most solemn: 'You are weighed in the
balances and found wanting. You have neglected spiritual responsibilities
because of busy activity in temporal matters, while your very position of
truth made it necessary that you should have more than human wisdom and
greater than finite judgment. This you needed in order to perform even the
mechanical part of your labor; and when you disconnected God and His glory
from your business, you turned from His blessing."- Testimonies, vol. 4,
pp. 384-387.

4 . How should this solemn reality affect our daily lives and conversa.,
tion? 2 Peter 3:11~13; Ezekiel 33:8, 9, 18, 19.

"On a certain occasion, when Betterton, the celebrated actor, was din-
ing with Dr. Sheldon, archbishop of Canterbury, the archbishop said to him,
'Pray, Mr. Betterton, tell me why it is that you actors affect your audiences
so powerfully by speaking of things imaginary.' 'My lord,' replied Betterton,
'with due submission to Your Grace, permit me to say that the reason is
plain: It all lies in the power of enthusiasm. We on the stage speak of things
imaginary as if they were real, and you in the pulpit speak of things real as if
they were imaginary.' "-Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 255.
"If there is anything in our world that should inspire enthusiasm, it is
the cross of Calvary.... Christ is to be accepted, believed on, and exalted.
This is to be the theme of conversation-the preciousness of Christ."-Ibid.,
p.338.

ONLY A REMI~ANT SAVED September 26

50 What basic condition ttnderlies all the promises of God? Matthew

24:13; Revelation 2:7, 11, 17,26; 3:5, 12,21; 21:7. Contrast this
with the smooth teachings promoted in the popular churches.

"There is nothing in the popular ministry that stirs the wrath of Satan,
makes the sinner tremble, or applies to the heart and conscience the fearful real-
ities of a judgment soon to come. Wicked men are generally pleased with a form
of piety without true godliness, and they will aid and support such a religion.
"Said the angel [in Ellen White's vision], 'Nothing less than the whole
armor of righteousness can enable men to overcome the powers of darkness
and retain the victory over them. Satan has taken full possession of the chur-
ches as a body. The sayings and doings of men are dwelt upon instead of the
plain, cutting truths of the Word of God.' "-Early Writings, pp. 273, 274.

6. Describe the characteristics of the faithful remnant to be saved

from destructiono Zephaniah 2: 1-3; 3:9, 12, 13; Psalm 24:3-60

"It is your own course of action that will mold your character for destruc-
tion or for the bliss of the ceaseless ages of eternity." -Sons and Daughters of
God, p. 343.

A MELODIOUS LIFE September 27

7 . What is the significance of the song of the 144,000 who gain the
victory over the beast and his image? Revelation 15:2-4; 14: 1-5.

"[The 144,000] sing 'a new song' before the throne, a song which no
man can learn save the hundred and forty and four thousand. It is the song of
Moses and the Lamb-a song of deliverance. None but the hundred and
forty-four thousand can learn that song; for it is the song of their experience
-an experience such as no other company has ever had."-The Great Con-
troversy, pp. 648, 649.

8. Describe the eternal life of the redeemed. Revelation 21:1-5; 22:1-

5, 14; Isaiah 51:3.

"Then we shall see [God] face to face, without a dimming veil between.
We shall stand in His presence and gaze upon the glory of His countenance."
- The Story of Redemption, p. 432.
"There every power will be developed, every capability increased. The
grandest enterprises will be carried forward, the loftiest aspirations will be
reached, the highest ambitions realized. And still there will arise new
heights to surmount, new wonders to admire, new truths to comprehend,
fresh objects to call forth the powers of mind and body and soul.

- 59-
"All the treasures of the universe will be open to the study of God's
children. With utterable delight we shall enter into the joy and the wisdom of
unfallen beings. We shall share the treasures gained through ages upon ages
spent in contemplation of God's handiwork. And the years of eternity, as
they roll, will continue to bring more glorious revelations." -Education, p. 307.
"As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence, and happiness
increase. The more men learn of God, the greater will be their admiration of
His character."- The Great Controversy, p. 678.

A FRESH, EXHAUSTLESS THEME September 28

9. What will be the most joyous aspect of eternity? Isaiah 66:22, 23.

10. What is the main theme of that beautiful land? Zechariah 13:6.

"The cross of Christ will be the science and the song of the redeemed
through all eternity. In Christ glorified they will behold Christ crucified.
Never will it be forgotten that He whose power created and upheld the
unnumbered worlds through the vast realms of space, the Beloved of God,
the Majesty of heaven, He whom cherub and shining seraph delighted to
adore-humbled Himself to uplift fallen man; that He bore the guilt and
shame of sin, and the hiding of His Father's face, till the woes of a lost world
broke His heart and crushed out His life on Calvary's cross. That the Maker
of all worlds, the Arbiter of all destinies, should lay aside His glory and
humiliate Himself from love to man will ever excite the wonder and adora-
tion of the universe."- The Great Controversy, p. 651.

Special Project Offering
for Poland

Poland is a country in eastern Europe with an area of 312,683 square

kilometers and a population of about 38 million. The people speak the Polish
language, which, due to its grammar and pronunciation, is one of the most
difficult languages in the world. The nation's economy is based equally on
industry and agriculture. The great majority of the population, 900/0, profess
the Roman Catholic faith, while 100/0 are of other religious affiliations, mostly
Protestant.
In Poland, the work of the SDA Reform Movement was established
after World War I. Among the first members of our church were those who
had remained true to the original principles of the Advent message during
the war. The period between World War I and World War II was of great
importance to the message of reformation in our country. A good number of
souls accepted the present truth, and new groups were organized. But with
the outbreak of World War II, this progress came to a halt. Our church was
proscribed and our church properties confiscated. Our workers and many of
our members were put in prison, and all our religious activities were forbid-
den by law. Because of their love for the truth, some of our brethren for-
feited their lives. Parents who refused to send their children to public school
on the Sabbath were severely punished. Their children were taken away from
them to be interned in monasteries, convents, or in state-run institutions.
After the war, our church enjoyed religious liberty only until 1950, when
it was proscribed for the second time. Because of the Christian principles we
uphold, our church members were declared to be promoters of unrest and
confusion, and were accused of endangering the safety of the country. Affilia-
tion with the SDA Reform Movement was prohibited by law, and, for this
reason, some of us were punished with imprisonment. So the work of God in
Poland, through the message of reformation, was greatly hindered for another
40 years. Nevertheless, through God's grace, the message was still kept alive
-underground. By 1971 our people were rejoicing at indications which
promised religious freedom. In 1990, when great political changes were tak-
ing place in Europe, liberty of conscience was finally restored to Poland.
Since that time, the believers have been openly active, printing and distrib-
uting pamphlets, sending Bibles and religious publications to other eastern
European countries, and preaching the message on the radio. But something
is yet lacking. We still continue to meet for worship only in private homes
because our financial situation does not enable us to purchase or erect a
building that could serve as a chapel and church headquarters.
The brethren and sisters here are helping as much as possible in order to
build or renovate. But we still need financial assistance from abroad to
establish a monument for the Lord in this country. Please remember the pro-
ject in Poland and be prepared to make a special sacrifice on the last Sabbath
of this quarter. May the Lord impress your hearts with our needs!
