FOREWORD

The theme of the lessons prepared for this quarter is holiness. This topic is
of great importance to all who want to have part in the kingdom of God. A proper
understanding of this subject is vital and perhaps even more particularly so is
the practical application of the truths connected with it. Holiness is the fitness
for heaven. "True holiness is wholeness in the service of God. This is the condition
of true Christian living." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 48. "Holiness is whole-
ness for God; it is the entire surrender of heart and life to the indwelling of the
principles of heaven." - The Desire of Ages, p. 556. Many will come to the gate
of the kingdom saying, "Lord, Lord," only to be turned back because they have
been satisfied with the theoretical knowledge or a formal compliance with external
religion that is acceptable by the human standards for church members.

True holiness is so closely allied with justification llnd sanctification that

a false understanding could defeat the hope of eternal life. Just at this time
when the end of all things is drawing ever closer, the evil one is trying to deceive,
if possible, the very elect. Few subjects suit his malevolent purposes so well. On
the one hand he can deceive or on the other introduce extremism.

The fanatical claims of some who profess to have already attained to holy,
sinless life, discourages some from seeking to obey the command of the Lord
Jesus to be perfect and to reflect His image fully through the power available
through faith in Jesus. This problem faced the apostles in the early ehurch. It
faced the Reformers in the time of Luther, and was repeatedly a problem in the
early days of the Advent movement. Sister White recorded many such confliets.

In our day there are different teachings with the same tendencies but this
should not discourage anyone from seeking true holiness - the holiness that
meets the approval of God and is motivated by the love for Jesus and a sincere
appreciation for all that He has done and will do for us. The possibility to be
entirely cleansed from sin and to live a victorious life is a possibility. To all who
believe on His name He gives power to become the sons of God (John 1:12) now,
right now and not in some dim and distant future. This is the glory that is to
be seen in His people when He will come to take them home. Let every student
seek to put into practice the lessons that may be learned in this series.

GENERAL CONFERENCE SABBATH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

From the Sabbath School Department -
Hearty greetings:
In order to encourage more faithful study of the Sabbath
School Lessons, we are changing the format of the lessons
slightly. The questions are grouped into five sets of two, so that
for the first five days of the week two questions are for con-
sideration each day and on the sixth day the whole ten
questions can be reviewed in preparation for the class study on
the Sabbath.
To encourage the daily study of the lesson-each day-a
box has been placed so that it may be checked off as each pair
of questions has been studied. We would encourage every stu-
dent to dig deep into the Scriptures and the Spirit of Prophecy
statements given with each lesson. The precious truths are not
all on the surface and each individual will find that which is
most interesting to him in his experience. May the Lord help
each one to discern what He is trying to convey to us in each
text and each lesson.

Your brethren in Christ,

The General Conference Sabbath
School Department

The Blessing of Daily Study

"Every day some portion of time should be appropriated to
the study of the lessons, not merely in learning to mechanically
repeat the words, while the mind does not comprehend the
meaning; but to go to the very foundation, and become
familiar with what is brought out in the lesson." -Counsels on
Sabbath School Work, page 53.

LESSON 1 MARCH 31 TO APRIL 6

RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS

KEY TEXT: "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man
shall see the Lord" (Heb 12:14).

DEFINITIONS D Sunday
March 31

1. What is to be understood by the expressions, "holiness," "holy," "righteous-

ness," and "sanctification"?

NOTE: Webster's Dictionary (School and Office edition):

holiuess, n. "the state or quality of being holy; freedom from sin; moral and
spiritual purity; sacredness."
holy, adj. "pure; morally and spiritually perfect; sinless; pre-eminently good;
pious; sacred; consecrated."
righteousness, n. "the quality of being righteous; holiness; justice; moral
integrity."
sanctification, n. "state of being sanctified; consecration."
While these definitions are given to make clear what is meant in the follow-
ing lessons, the counsel given below should be kept in mind:
"Many commit the error of trying to define minutely the fine points of dis-
tinction between justification and sanctification. Into the definitions of these two
terms they often bring their own ideas and speculations. Why try to be more
minute than is Inspiration on the vital question of righteousness by faith? Why
try to work out every minute point, as if the salvation of the soul depended upon
all having exactly your understanding of this matter? All cannot see in the same
line of vision (MS 21, 1891)." - SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 6, p. 1072.

2. While holiness may seem to be an abstract condition, how is it related to right-

eousness? EVh 4:21-24.

NOTE: "It is not a conclusive evidence that a man is a Christian because he

manifests spiritual ecstasy under extraordinary circumstances. Holiness is not
rapture: it is an entire surrender of the will to God; it is living by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of God; it is doing the will of our heavenly Father;
it is trusting God in trial, in darkness as well as in the light; it is walking by
faith and not by sight; it is relying on God with unquestioning confidence, and
resting in His love." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 51.

HOLINESS AND RIGHTEOUSNESS D Monday

April 1
3. Because we are advised to seek for righteousness (holiness), what should we
do? Lk 11:9; Mt 5:6.

NOTE: "Righteousness has its root in godliness. No human being is righteous

any longer than he has faith in God and maintains a vital connection with Him.
As a flower of the field has its root in the soil; as it must receive air, dew,
showers, and sunshine, so must we receive from God that which ministers to the
life of the soul. It is only through becoming partakers of His nature that we
receive power to obey His commandments. No man, high or low, experienced

-5-
or inexperienced, can steadily maintain before his fellowmen a pure, forceful
life unless his life is hid with Christ in God. The greater the activity among
men, the closer should be the communion of the heart with God." - Testimonies,
vol. 7, p. 194.

4. What is the nature of God? 1 In 4:8, 16.

NOTE: "Righteousness is holiness, likeness to God, and 'God is love.' 1 John 4:16.
It is conformity to the law of God, for 'all Thy commandments are righteousness'
(Psalm 119:172), and 'love is the fulfilling of the law' (Romans 13:10). Right-
eousness is love, and love is the light and the life of God. The righteousness
of God is embodied in Christ. We receive righteousness by receiving Him." -
Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 18.

ATTAINING RIGHTEOUSNESS D Tuesday

April 2

5. What underlying principle enables us to understand and appreciate righteous-

ness? Mt 22 :34-40.

6. What must all do to reach the unqualified holiness that is the only acceptable
standard for eternal life? Heb 12:14; Is 55:6, 7.

NOTE: "Do not listen to the enemy's suggestion to stay away from Christ until
you have made yourself better, until you are good enough to come to God. If you
wait until then you will never come. When Satan points to your filthy garments,
repeat the promise of the Saviour, 'Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise
cast out.' John 6:37. Tell the enemy that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from
all sin. Make the prayer of David your own: 'Purge me with hyssop, and I shall
be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.' Psalm 51 :7." - Prophets
and Kings, p. 320.

HOLINESS SETS APART D Wednesday

April 3

7. What do the Scriptures say concerning the difference between the holy and
the profane? Eze 22:26.

8. What must be clearly understood to prevent a mistake commonly found among

religious people? Rom 10:1-4.

TRUE HOLINESS D Thursday

April 4

9. What is characteristic of all God's work? Ps 145:17.

10. What visible changes must be seen in the life of a sinner who is seeking
righteousness and holiness? Rom 6:18.22; Gal 5:19-24.

NOTE: That religion which makes of sin a light matter, dwelling upon the love
of God to the sinner regardless of his actions, only encourages the sinner to

-6-
believe that God will receive him while he continues in that which he knows to
be sin. This is what some are doing who profess to believe present truth. The
truth is kept apart from the life, and that is the reason it has no power to con-
vict and convert the sou!." - Testimonies, vo!. 5, p. 540.

LESSON 2 APRIL 7 TO 13

HOLINESS BY WAY OF TRUTH

KEY TEXT: "And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that

perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they
might be saved" (2 Th 2:10).

FREEDOM LOST AND REGAINED D Sunday

April 7

1. How is joy and happiness and freedom lost? In 8:34; Rom 6:16; 2 Pe 2:19.

2. How is all falsehood, error and its consequent bondage corrected? In 8:32.

NOTE: "But Christ implants a principle. By implanting truth and righteousness,

He counterworks error and sin." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 77.

STEPS TO REGAIN FREEDOM D Monday

April 8

3. What was the gift of the Holy Spirit to do? In 16:13.

NOTE: "Ever since the first promise of redemption was spoken in Eden, the
life, the character, and the mediatorial work of Christ have been the study of
human minds. Yet every mind through whom the Holy Spirit has worked has
presented these themes in a light that is fresh and new. The truths of redemp-
tion are capable of constant development and expansion. Though old, they are
ever new, constantly revealing to the seeker for truth a greater glory and a
mightier power." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 127.

4. What is the source of truth? What are the three basic steps from sin and
death, to holiness and eternal life? In 14:6.

NOTE: "Truth in Christ and through Christ is measureless. The student of Scrip-
ture looks, as it were, into a fountain that deepens and broadens as he gazes into
its depths. Not in this life shall we comprehend the mystery of God's love in giving
His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. The work of our Redeemer on this
earth is and ever will be a subject that will put to the stretch our highest imag-
ination. Man may tax every mental power in the endeavor to fathom this mystery,
but his mind will become faint and weary. The most diligent searcher will see
before him a boundless, shoreless sea." - Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 128, 129.

-7-
TRUTH AS A FOUNDATION o Tuesday
April 9

5. What is revealed concerning the nature and power of truth? 2 Cor 13:8;'
Ps 117:2.

6. Why do men perish when truth is freely available? 2 Th 2 :10; 2 Ti 3 :7.

TRUTH AT WORK o Wednesday

April 10

7. What evidence reveals that the truth is operating in a soul? Ps 51:7;

1 Cor 13 :4-6.

NOTE: "A profession of faith and the possession of truth in the soul are two
different things. The mere knowledge of truth is not enough. We may possess
this, but the tenor of our thoughts may not be changed. The heart must be con-
verted and sanctified." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 97.

8. If the teacher of truth (the Holy Spirit) is ignored or rejected, what happens
to men's minds? 1 Ti 6 :3-5.

NOTE: "We must have more than an intellectual belief in the truth. Many 9f
the Jews were convinced that Jesus was the Son of God, but they were too proud
and ambitious to surrender. They decided to resist the truth, and they maintained
their opposition. They did not receive into the heart the truth as it is in Jesus.
When truth is held as truth only by the conscience, when the heart is not stimu-
lated and made receptive, only the mind is affected. But when the truth is
received as truth by the heart, it has passed through the conscience, and has
captivated the soul with its pure principles. It is placed in the heart by the Holy
Spirit, who reveals its beauty to the mind, that its transforming power may be
seen in the character. -Review and Herald, Feb. 14, 1899." - Evangelism, p. 291.

RESTORING THE DIVINE IMAGE o Thursday

April 11

9. What symbolic armour is necessary to guard the body, soul, and spirit, in
attaining holiness? Eph 6 :13-16.

10. With what simple parable did the Lord illustrate the effectiveness of truth?
Lk 13:20, 21.

NOTE: "The leaven of truth works a change in the whole man, making the coarse
refined, the rough gentle, the selfish generous. By it the impure are cleansed,
washed in the blood of the Lamb. Through its life-giving power it brings all there
is of mind and soul and strength into harmony with the divine life. Man with
his human nature becomes a partaker of divinity. Christ is honored in excellence
and perfection of character. As these changes are effected, angels break forth
in rapturous song, and God and Christ rejoice over souls fashioned after the divine
similitude." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 102.

THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS

KEY TEXT: "Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord
in the beauty of holiness" (Ps 29:2).

THE BEAUTY AND HOLINESS o Sunday

April 14

1. What is the highest form of human understanding and expression? Prov

9 :10, 1 Chr 16:29.

2. With what impressive expression did Jehosaphat acknowledge the beauty of

holiness? 2 Chr 20 :20, 21.

THE ULTIMATE GOAL o Monday

April 15

3. How has the Lord illustrated the beauty of character? Hos 14:4-9; Lk
12 :22-27.

NOTE: "'Consider the lilies.' Every flower that opens its petals to the sunshine
obeys the same great laws that guide the stars, and how simple and beautiful
and how sweet its life! Through the flowers, God would call our attention to the
loveliness of Christlike character. He who has given such beauty to the blossoms
desires far more that the soul be clothed with the beauty of the character of
Christ." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 97.

4. What was the supreme desire of the Psalmist? Ps 27 :4.

ATTAINING TRUE BEAUTY AND HOLINESS o Tuesday

April 16
5. What indispensible and progressive steps must be taken by all who will asso-
ciate with the Creator of the beautifnl? Is 33:15-17.

NOTE: "It is right to love beauty and to desire it; but God desires us to love and
to seek first the highest beauty - that which is imperishable. The choicest produc-
tions of human skill possess no beauty that can bear comparison with that beauty
of character which in His sight is of 'great price.''' - Education, p. 249.

6. How do the messengers of holiness appear in the sight of the Lord and the
hosts of heaven? Is 52:7.

NOTE: "True education does not ignore the value of scientific knowledge or lit-
erary acquirements; but above information it values power; above power, good-
ness; above intellectual acquirements, character. The world does not so much need
men of great intellect as of noble character. It needs men in whom ability is con-
trolled by steadfast principle." - Education, p. 225.

-9-
THE CHARACTERISTIC OF GOD'S CREATION 0 Wednesday
April 17

7. How is the beauty of holiness maintained? Ec 3:11; Col 1:16, 17.

NOTE: "'He hath made everything beautiful in its time' (Ecclesiastes 3:11, R.V.);
and true beauty will be secured, not in marring God's work, but in coming into
harmony with the laws of Him who created all things, and who finds pleasure in
their beauty and perfection." -Education, p. 198.

8. What does God call His people who have been born again and reconciled with
Him? Jer 13:20.

BEAUTY OF HOLINESS IN THE SANCTUARY OF GOD

Thursday o
April 18

9. Why was Zion considered beautiful by the people of God? Ps 48:1-3; 50:1, 2.

10. Where can God's peo\lle find the deepest and most satisfying spiritual emo-
tion in this life? Ps 96:9; 29 :2.

LESSON 4 APRIL 21 TO 27

BE YE HOLY FOR I AM HOLY

KEY TEXT: "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven
is pelieet" (Mt 5:48).

SONS OF A HOLY GOD o Sunday

April 21

1. What do the Scriptures say concerning the nature of God? Lev 11 :44, 45.

2. Because man was made in the image of God, what must have been his orig-
inal nature? Gen 1:26, 27; 1 Pe 1:15, 16.

NOTE: "The white robe of innocence was worn by our first parents when they
were placed by God in holy Eden. They lived in perfect conformity to the will of
God. All the strength of their affections was given to their heavenly Father. A
beautiful soft light, the light of God, enshrouded the holy pair. This robe of light
was a symbol of their spiritual garments of heavenly innocence. Had they re-
mained true to God it would ever have continued to enshroud them. But when sin
entered, they severed their connection with God, and the light that had encircled
them departed. Naked and ashamed, they tried to supply the place of the heavenly

-10-
garments by sewing together fig leaves for a covering." - Christ's Object Les-
sons, pp. 310, 311.

RESTORATION TO ORIGINAL o Monday

April 22

3. To what high status is the overcomer to be elevated ultimately? 1 Cor 6:2,3;

Rev 20:4, 6.

NOTE: "Then I saw thrones, and Jesus and the redeemed saints sat upon them;
and the saints reigned as kings and priests unto God. Christ, in union with His
people, judged the wicked dead, comparing their acts with the statute book, the
Word of God, and deciding every case according to the deeds done in the body.
Then they meted out to the wicked the portion which they must suffer, according
to their works; and it was written against their names in the book of death.
Satan also and his angels were judged by Jesus and the saints...." -- Early
Writings, pp. 290, 291.

4. What difference must exist between unbelievers and believers? Lev 10 :10.

A SPIRITUAL STATUS o Tuesday

April 23

5. What kind of temple is the believer said to be? 1 Cor 3:17.

NOTE: " ... From eternal ages it was God's purpose that every created being,
from the bright and holy seraph to man, should be a temple for the indwelling
of the Creator. Because of sin, humanity ceased to be a temple for God. Darkened
and defiled by evil, the heart of man no longer revealed the glory of the Divine
One. But by the incarnation of the Son of God, the purpose of Heaven is fulfilled.
God dwells in humanity, and through saving grace the heart of man becomes
again His temple. God designed that the temple at Jerusalem should be a con-
tinual witness to the high destiny open to every soul. But the Jews had not under-
stood the significance of the building they regarded with so much pride. They did
not yield themselves as holy temples for the Divine Spirit...." - The Desire
of Ages, p. 161.

6. When the principles of truth and faith are fully cultivated in the believers,
what is made? Eph 2:19-22.

EXAMPLE OF HUMAN HOLINESS o Wednesday

April 24

7. What staudard does God require of all, and are there different degrees of
this requiremeut? Mt 5 :48.

NOTE: "The germination of the seed represents the beginning of spiritual life,
and the development of the plant is a beautiful figure of Christian growth. As
in nature, so in grace; there can be no life without growth. The plant must either
grow or die. As its growth is silent and imperceptible, but continuous, so is the
development of the Christian life. At every stage of development our life may
be perfect; yet if God's purpose for us is fulfilled, there will be continual advance-
ment. Sanctification is the work of a lifetime. As our opportunities multiply, our

-11-
experience will enlarge, and our knowledge increase. We shall become strong to
bear responsibility, and our maturity will be in proportion to our privileges." -
Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 65, 66.

8. What example of the Lord must we also be willing to follow? Php 2:5-8;
Lk 9:23, 24.

HOLINESS IS ATTAINABLE o Thursday

April 25

9. What are the steps that must be taken before the perfection of heavenly
graces? 2 Pe 1 :5-8.

NOTE: "Before the believer is held out the wonderful possibility of being like
Christ, obedient to all the principles of the law. But of himself man is utterly
unable to reach this condition. The holiness that God's word declares he must
have before he can be saved is the result of the working of divine grace as he
bows in submission to the discipline and restraining influences of the Spirit of
truth. Man's obedience can be made perfect only by the incense of Christ's
righteousness, which fills with divine fragrance every act of obedience. The part
of the Christian is to persevere in overcoming every fault. Constantly he is to
pray to the Saviour to heal the disorders of his sin-sick soul. He has not the
wisdom or the strength to overcome; these belong to the Lord, and He bestows
them on those who in humiliation and contrition seek Him for help." - The Acts
of the Apostles, p. 532.

10. What confident assurauce did David keep in his heart during his earthly
pilgrimage? Ps 17 :15.

LESSON 5 APRIL 28 TO MAY J

THE HOLY SCRIPTURES
KEY TEXT: "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide
you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but what-
soever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you
things to come" (In 16:13).

THE PURPOSE OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURE o Sunday

April 28

1. What has ever been the central and basic purpose of the Scriptures?
Hom 1:1-5.

NOTE: "In every page, whether history, or precept, or prophecy, the Old Testa-
ment Scriptures are irradiated with the glory of the Son of God. So far as it
was of divine institution, the entire system of Judaism was a compacted prophecy
of the gospel." - The Desire of Ages, p. 211.

2. What is another reason for the giving of the Holy Scriptures? Rom 15 :4.

-12-
NOTE: "The words of God are the wellsprings of life. As you seek unto those
living springs you will, through the Holy Spirit, be brought into communion with
Christ. Familiar truths will present themselves to your mind in a new aspect,
texts of Scripture will burst upon you with a new meaning as a flash of light,
you will see the relation of other truths to the work of redemption, and you will
know that Christ is leading you, a divine Teacher is at your side." -Thoughts
from the Mount of Blessing, p. 20.

RIGHTLY DIVIDING D Monday

April 29

3. What provIsIon did God make for the holy education of His children, and
what is the effect of His words? Amos 3:7, Jer 23:29, Heb 4:12.

NOTE: "Whenever men choose their own way, they place themselves in contro-
versy with God. They will have no place in the kingdom of heaven, for they are
at war with the very principles of heaven. In disregarding the will of God, they
are placing themselves on the side of Satan, the enemy of God and man. Not
by one word, not by many words, but by every word that God has spoken, shall
man live. We cannot disregard one word, however trifling it may seem to us,
and be safe. There is not a commandment of the law that is not for the good
and happiness of man, both in this life and in the life to come. In obedience to
God's law, man is surrounded as with a hedge and kept from the evil. He who
breaks down this divinely erected barrier at one point has destroyed its power
to protect him; for he has opened a way by which the enemy can enter to waste
and ruin." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 52.

4. How clearly do the Scriptures teach that unholiness cannot associate with
holiness? Is 59 :2.

HOLY MESSENGERS AND THE ERRING o Tuesday

April 30

5. What kind of channels did God select to make divine communion with His
people? 2 Pe 1 :21; Eph. 3 :1-5.

6. What has inevitably followed when the Holy Scriptures have been ignored
or opposed? Hos 4 :6.

NOTE: "In every age, transgression of God's law has been followed by the same
result. In the days of Noah, when every principle of rightdoing was violated, and
iniquity became so deep and widespread that God could no longer bear with it,
the decree went forth, 'I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of
the earth.' Genesis 6:7. In Abraham's day the people of Sodom openly defied God
and His law; and there followed the same wickedness, the same corruption, the
same unbridled indulgence, that had marked the antediluvian world. The inhab-
itants of Sodom passed the limits of divine forbearance, and there was kindled
against them the fire of God's vengeance." -Prophets and Kings, p. 297.

POWER AND ENDURANCE OF THE WORD D Wednesday

May 1
7. How enduring are the Scriptures, and what will happen when they fulfill
their mission? Ps 119:152; Mt 24:35, 14.

-13-
8. Why is it difficult without the help of the Holy SJJirit to comprehend the
meaning and the power of the Holy Scriptures? Is 55 :8, 9.

NOTE: "Though the finite minds of men are inadequate to enter into the counsels
of the Infinite One, or to understand fully the working out of His purposes, yet
often it is because of some error or neglect on their own part that they so
dimly comprehend the messages of Heaven. Not infrequently the minds of the
people, and even of God's servants, are so blinded by human opinions, the tradi-
tions and false teaching of men, that they are able only partially to grasp the
great things which He has revealed in His word. Thus it was with the disciples
of Christ, even when the Saviour was with them in person. Their minds had
become inbued with the popular conception of the Messiah as a temporal prince,
who was to exalt Israel to the throne of the universal empire, and they could
not understand the meaning of His words foretelling His sufferings and death."
- The Great Controversy, PP. 344, 345.

SACRED BONDS THROUGH THE WORD o Thursday

May 2

9. What universal protection is constantly J)l'ovided for the truth and verity of
the Scriptures? In 16 :13.

NOTE: "I saw that angels of God were commissioned to guard with special care
the sacred, important truths which were to serve as an anchor to the disciples
of Christ through every generation. The Holy Spirit especially rested upon the
apostles, who were witnesses of our Lord's crucifixion, resurrection, and ascen-
sion - important truths which were to be the hope of Israel. All were to look
to the Saviour of the world as their only hope, and walk in the way which He
had opened by the sacrifice of His own life, and keep God's law and live. I saw
the wisdom and goodness of Jesus in giving power to the disciples to carry 011
the same work for which He had been hated and slain by the Jews. In His name
they had power over the works of Satan. A halo of light and glory centered about
the time of Jesus' death and resurrection, immortalizing the sacred truth that
He was the Saviour of the world." - Early Writings, pp. 196, 197.

10. What kind of conversation should be among those who are preparing for
holiness? Mal 3:16.

NOTE: "God has given us reason to be used for a noble purpose. We are here
as probationers for the next life. It is too solemn a period for any of us to be
careless or to move in uncertainty. Our intercourse with others should be char-
acterized by sobriety and heavenly-mindedness. Our conversation should be upon
heavenly things....

"What is more worthy to engross the mind than the plan of redemption? It is
a subject that is exhaustless. The love of Jesus, the salvation offered to fallen
man through His infinite love, holiness of heart, the precious, saving truth for
these last days, the grace of Christ - these are subjects which may animate the
soul and cause the pure in heart to feel that joy which the disciples felt when
Jesus came and walked with them as they traveled toward Emmaus...." -Tes-
timonies, vol. 5, p. 600.

D Sunday

1. Where is the constructive association of the Holy Spirit first seen with the
Father and the Son of God? Gen 1 :2.

2. Who were associated in the reformation of fallen man, in the plan of redemp-
tion? Zec 6 :12, 13.

NOTE: "'And the counsel of peace shall be between Them both.' The love of the
Father, no less than of the Son, is the fountain of salvation for the lost race.
Said Jesus to His disciples before he went away: 'I say not unto you, that I will
pray the Father for you: for the Father Himself loveth you.' John 16:26, 27.
God was 'in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself.' 2 Corinthians 5 :19. And
in the ministration in the sanctuary above, 'the counsel of peace shall be between
Them both.' 'God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' John
3:16." - The Great Controversy, pp. 416, 417.

"The Godhead was stirred with pity for the race, and the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Spirit gave Themselves to the working out of the plan of redemption."
- Counsels on Health, p. 222.

PART PLAYED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT D Monday

May 6
3. What specific work is done by the Holy Spirit in the Ilrocess of developing
holiness? Rom 8 :26.

NOTE: "Christ, our Mediator, and the Holy Spirit are constantly interceding in
man's behalf, but the Spirit pleads not for us as does Christ who presents His
blood, shed from the foundation of the world; the Spirit works upon our hearts,
drawing out prayers and penitence, praise and thanksgiving...." - SDA Bible
Commentary, vol. 6, p. 1077.

4. If we are justified by receiving the righteousness of Christ, how are we sanc-

tified? 2 Th 2 :13, 14; 1 Pe 1:2 (Note the Trinity in these verses.)

NOTE: "Our sanctification is the work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Spirit. It is the fulfillment of the covenant that God has made with those who
bind themselves up with Him, to stand with Him, with His Son, and with His
Spirit in holy fellowship. Have you been born again? Have you become a new
being in Christ Jesus? Then co-operate with the three powers of heaven who are
working in your behalf. Doing this you wili reveal to the world the principles of
righteousness. - The Signs of the Times, June 19, 1901." - Questions on Doc-
trine, p. 646.

5. What is the objective and ultimate result of the work of the Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit? Jn 17 :20-22.

6. In what way is the Holy Spirit connected with the sealing of the believers?
Eph 4:30; 1:12, 13.

WITHOUT MEASURE o Wednesday

7. What resulted from the rejection, by the Jews, of the fact and personality
of the Holy Spirit? 2 Cor 3 :15-18.

8. With what mighty display of power in the gospel will the Holy Spirit again
be associated? Acts 3 :19-21.

NOTE: "... At that time, while the work of salvation is closing, trouble will be
coming on the earth, and the nations will be angry, yet held in check so as not
to prevent the work of the third angel. At that time the 'latter rain,' or refresh-
ing from the presence of the Lord, will come, to give power to the loud voice of
the third angel, and prepare the saints to stand in the period when the seven last
plagues shall be poured out." - Early Writings, pp. 85, 86.

FINAL WORK o Thursday

May 9
9. What holy condition must the "remnant" possess to participate in the climax
of probation? Rev 18 :1, 2.

NOTE: "The remnant people of God must be a converted people. The presentation
of this message is to result in the conversion and sanctification of souls. We are
to feel the power of the Spirit of God in this movement. This is a wonderful,
definite message; it means everything to the receiver, and it is to be proclaimed
with a loud cry. We must have a true, abiding faith that this message will go forth
with increasing importance till the close of time." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 154.

"Angels were sent to aid the mighty angel from heaven, and I heard voices which
seemed to sound everywhere, 'Come out of her, My people, that ye be not par-
takers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have
reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.' This message
seemed to be an addition to the third message, joining it as the midnight cry-
joined the second angel's message in 1844. The glory of God rested upon the
patient, waiting saints, and they fearlessly gave the last solemn warning, pro-
claiming the fall of Babylon and calling upon God's people to come out of her
that they might escape her- fearful doom." - Early Writings, pp. 277, 278.

LAW AND SIN o Sunday
May 12

1. What has ever been necessary to preserve justice, and the relationships of
all intelligent beings? 1 Ti 1 :5, 8-10.

NOTE: "God requires perfection of His children. His law is a transcript of His
own character, and it is the standard of all character. This infinite standard is
presented to all that there may be no mistake in regard to the kind of people
whom God will have to compose His kingdom." - Christ's Object Lessons, p. 315.

2. What is the result of a rebellion against the law? 1 In 3:4; Rom 5:12.

LAW A BLESSING o Monday

May 13

3. What preserves peace and harmony among all responsible beings both in
heaven and in earth? Ps 119:165; 103:17-20.

NOTE: "It is the Creator of men, the Giver of the law, who declares that it is not
His purpose to set aside its precepts. Everything in nature, from the mote in the
sunbeam to the worlds on high, is under law. And upon obedience to these laws
the order and harmony of the natural world depend. So there are great principles
of righteousness to control the life of all intelligent beings, and upon conformity
to these principles the well-being of the universe depends. Before this earth was
called into being, God's law existed. Angels are governed by its principles, and
in order for earth to be in harmony with heaven, man also must obey the divine
statutes...." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 48.

4. If God is holy, and the law is a revelation of His character, then what must
rl be the nature of His law? Rom 7 :12.

LAW, A SURE FOUNDATION o Tuesday

May 14

5. What impressive parable did the Lord use to illustrate the fundamental basis
of the holy law? Mt 7:24-27.

-17-
NOTE: "The great principles of the law, of the very nature of God, are embodied
in the words of Christ on the mount. Whoever builds upon them is building upon
Christ, the Rock of Ages. In receiving the word, we receive Christ. And only those
who thus receive His words are building upon Him." -Thoughts From the Mount
of Blessing, pp. 148, 149.

"Holiness is not rapture; it is the result of surrendering all to God; it is doing

the will of our heavenly Father." - Ibid.

6. How enduring is the law of God? Ps 119 :89, 152; Mt 5 :18.

NOTE: "... On the mount He declared that not the smallest iota should pass
from the law till all things should be accomplished - all things that concern the
human race, all that relates to the plan of redemption. He does not teach that
the law is ever to be abrogated, but He fixes the eye upon the utmost verge of
man's horizon and assures us that until this point is reached the law will retain
its authority so that none may suppose it was His mission to abolish the precepts
of the law. So long as heaven and earth continue, the holy principles of God's law
will remain. His righteousness, 'like the great mountains' (Psalm 36:6), will
continue, a source of blessing, sending forth streams to refresh the earth." -
Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 49, 50.

AGENCY OF CONVERSION FROM SIN o Wednesday

May 15

7. What is the root cause of evil? Jer 44:23.

8. How is holiness developed by the law? Ps 19:7-11.

BASIS OF A HOLY LIVING o Thursday

9. What contrast does the apostle Paul use to reveal the difference between
God's holy law, and laws of human devising? Col 2:6-10.

10. What is the test of fellowship for human and heavenly beings, now and in
the future judgement? Ec 12:13, 14.

NOTE: "Obedience is the test of discipleship. It is the keeping of the command-

ments that proves the sincerity of our professions of love. When the doctrine we
accept kills sin in the heart, purifies the soul from defilement, bears fruit unto
holiness, we may know that it is the truth of God." - Thoughts From the Mount

THE HOLY SABBATH

KEY TEXT: "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be
glad in it" (Ps 118:24).

THE DAY OF REJOICING o Sunday

May 19

1. What was the first institution made for man on a holy earth? Gen 2:1-3.

2. How do we know that the other beings in the great universe of God were
actively interested in the creation of the earth and the memorial of that
creation? Job 38 :7.

NOTE: "I was shown that the law of God would stand fast forever, and exist in
the new earth to all eternity. At the creation, when the foundations of the earth
were laid, the sons of God looked with admiration upon the work of the Creator,
and all the heavenly host shouted for joy. It was then that the foundation of the
Sabbath was laid. At the close of the six days of creation, God rested on the
seventh day from all His work which He had made; and He blessed the seventh
day and sanctified it, because that in it He had rested from all His work. The
Sabbath was instituted in Eden before the fall, and was observed by Adam and
Eve, and all the heavenly host. God rested on the seventh day, and blessed and
hallowed it. I saw that the Sabbath never will be done away; but that the re-
deemed saints, and all the angelic host, will observe it in honor of the great Cre-
ator to all eternity." - Early Writings, p. 217.

SABBATH-KEEPING DEFINED o Monday

May 20

3. How long is the seventh-day Sabbath to be recognized as a sacred covenant?

Ex 31 :12, 13, 16, 17.

NOTE: "The Sabbath and the family were alike instituted in Eden, and in God's
purpose they are indissolubly linked together. On this day more than on any other,
it is possible for us to live the life of Eden. It was God's plan for the members
of the family to be associated in work and study, in worship and recreation, the
father as priest of his household, and both father and mother as teachers and
companions of their children. But the results of sin, having changed the condi-
tions of life, to a great degree prevent this association. Often the father hardly
sees the faces of his children throughout the week. He is almost wholly deprived
of opportunity for companionship or instruction. But God's love has set a limit
to the demands of toil. Over the Sabbath He places His merciful hand. In His own
day He preserves for the family opportunity for communion with Him, with na-
ture, and with one another." - Education, pp. 250, 251.

4. What definite requirement precludes any compromises and concession for

profaning the Sabbath day? Ex 34:21.

THE SABBATH DURING THE TIME OF JESUS 0 Tuesday

May 21
5. What was the custom of Jesus concerning Sabbath-keeping? Lk 4:16.

-19-
6. What respect and regard for the holy Sabbath did the close relatives and
friends of Jeslls show at the time of His death? Lk 23 :50-56.

NOTE: "Gently and reverently they [Joseph and Nicodemus] removed with their
own hands the body of Jesus from the cross. Their tears of sympathy fell fast
as they looked upon His bruised and lacerated form. Joseph owned a new tomb,
hewn in a rock. This he was reserving for himself; but it was near Calvary, and
he now prepared it for Jesus. The body, together with the spices brought by Nico-
demus, was carefully wrapped in a linen sheet, and the Redeemer was borne to
the tomb. There the three disciples straightened the mangled limbs, and folded
the bruised hands upon the pulseless breast. The Galilean women came to see that
all had been done that could be done for the lifeless form of their beloved Teacher.
Then they saw the heavy stone rolled against the entrance of the tomb, and the
Saviour was left at rest. The women were last at the cross, and last at the tomb
of Christ. While the evening shades were gathering, Mary Magdalene and the
other Marys lingered about the resting place of their Lord, shedding tears of
sorrow over the fate of Him whom they loved. 'And they returned, ... and rested
the Sabbath day according to the commandment.' Luke 23:56." - The Desire of
Ages, p. 774.

THE SABBATH IN APOSTOLIC TIMES o Wednesday

May 22
7. What was the cllstom of the apostles, disciples and followers of the Christian
faith? Acts 13:14; 16:13; 17:2; 18:4.

8. What kind of experience was the apostle John having when a significant
message was given to him, and how do we know that this was on the Sab-
bath day? Rev 1:10-13; Mk 2:28.

NOTE: "It was on the Sabbath that the Lord of glory appeared to the exiled
apostle. The Sabbath was as sacredly observed by John on Patmos as when he
was preaching to the people in the towns and cities of Judea. He claimed as his
own the precious promises that had been given regarding that day. 'I was in the
Spirit on the Lord's day,' John writes, 'and heard behind me a great voice, as of
a trumpet, saying, 1 am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last.... And 1 turned
to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, 1 saw seven golden candle-
sticks; and in the midst of the seven candlesticks One like unto the Son of man.'
Revelation 1 :10-13." -The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 581, 582.

9. Consequent on the sacrifice of Christ, what is one of the things that may be
expected to be restored? Acts 3 :21.

COUNTERFEIT HOLINESS
KEY TEXT: "Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into
the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father
which is in heaven" (Mt 7:21).

ANOTHER WAY o Sunday

May 26

1. Although Adam and Eve had been warned against Satan, upon what spurious
idea of holiness did they fall? Gen 3 :4, 5.

NOTE: "Like the angels, the dwellers in Eden had been placed upon probation;
their happy estate could be retained only on condition of fidelity to the Creator's
law. They could obey and live, or disobey and perish. God had made them the
recipients of rich blessings; but should they disregard His will, He who spared
not the angels that sinned, could not spare them; transgression would forfeit His
gifts and bring upon them misery and ruin.

"The angels warned them to be on their guard against the devices of Satan, for
his efforts to ensnare them would be unwearied. While they were obedient to God
the evil one could not harm them; for, if need be, every angel in heaven would
be sent to their help. If they steadfastly repelled his first insinuations, they would
be as secure as the heavenly messengers. But should they once yield to tempta-
tion, their nature would become so depraved that in themselves they would have
no power and no disposition to resist Satan." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 53.

2. How many of the most highly intelligent beings were similarly deceived?
Rev 12:9.

THE DEVIL TESTS THE SON OF MAN o Monday

May 27

3. What did the Lord say of the origin of all deception? In 8 :43-45.

4. When and where was the Lord tempted with counterfeit holiness? Mt 4:1.4,
8-11.

NOTE: "But faith is in no sense allied to presumption. Only he who has true
faith is secure against presumption. For presumption is Satan's counterfeit of
faith. Faith claims God's promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. Presump-
tion also claims the promises, but uses them as Satan did, to excuse transgression.
Faith would have led our first parents to trust the love of God, and to obey His
commands. Presumption led them to transgress His law, believing that His great
love would save them from the consequence of their sin. It is not faith that claims
the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions on which mercy is to
be granted. Genuine faith has its foundation in the promises and provisions of
the Scriptures." -The Desire of Ages, p. 126.

THE PERIL OF FORMALITY o Tuesday
May 28
5. What conditions had overcome the religious leaders in the time of Christ?
Mt 5:20; Rom 10:2, 3.

NOTE: "The people whom God had called to be the pillar and ground of the truth
had become representatives of Satan. They were doing the work that he desired
them to do, taking a course to misrepresent the character of God, and cause the
world to look upon Him as a tyrant. The very priest who ministered in the temple
had lost sight of the significance of the service they performed. They had ceased
to look beyond the symbol to the thing signified. In presenting the sacrificial
offerings they were as actors in a play. The ordinances which God Himself had
appointed were made the means of blinding the mind and hardening the heart.
God could do no more for man through these channels. The whole system must
be swept away." -The Desire of Ages, p. 36.

6. What positive danger exists in a merely formal experience of holiness?

Mt 7:21-23.

TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS o Wednesday

May 29
7. How did the Gentiles receive genuine holiness? Rom 9 :30-32.

8. What has always been the true test of every correct form of religious exer-
cise? Lk 6 :43-45; Rom 6 :1, 2, 17, 18.

NOTE: "When a cl'isis comes in the life of any soul, and you attempt to give
counselor admonition, your words will have only the weight of influence for good
that your own example and spirit have gained for you. You must be good before
you can do good. You cannot exert an influence that will transform others until
your own heart has been humbled and refined and made tender by the grace of
Christ. When this change has been wrought in you, it will be as natural for you to
live to bless others as it is for the rosebush to yield its fragrant bloom or the vine
its purple clusters." - Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, PP. 127, 128.

HEAVEN AND EARTH UNITED IN CHRIST

KEY TEXT: "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and
I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye
can do nothing" (In 15:5).

THE HOLY EXAMPLE D Sunday

June 2
1. What is said concerning Jesus as a child? Lk 1 :35; Acts 4 :27-30.

2. What is true of the life of Christ as the Son of God, and as the Son of man,
and how did this make reconciliation possible? 2 Cor 5 :18-21.

NOTE: "The ideal of Christian character is Christlikeness. As the Son of man

was perfect in His life, so His followers are to be perfect in their life. Jesus was
in all things made like unto His brethren. He became flesh, even as we are. He
was hungry and thirsty and weary. He was sustained by food and refreshed by
sleep. He shared the lot of man; yet He was the blameless Son of God. He was
God in the flesh. His character is to be ours. The Lord says of those who believe
in Him, 'I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they
shall be My people.' 2 Cor. 6:16." - The Desire of Ages, p. 311.

A MEDIATOR QUALIFIED TO FULFILL JUSTICE

D Monday
June 3
3. What conditions fulfilled by Christ make it )lossible for the demands of the
law broken by man to be satisfied with justice? 1 Pe 3 :18.

NOTE: "I then saw the glorious Redeemer, beautiful and lovely; that He left
the realms of glory and came to this dark and lonely world to give His precious
life and die, the just for the unjust. He bore the cruel mocking and scourging,
wore the plainted crown of thorns, and sweat great drops of blood in the garden,
while the burden of the sins of the whole world was upon Him. The angel asked,
'What for?' Oh, I saw and knew that it was for us; for our sins He suffered all
this, that by His precious blood He might redeem us unto God!" - Early Writ-
ings, p. 49.

4. Why could no other holy being or angel be an acceptable or qualified sacrifice

to reconcile an apostate earth with a holy heaven? Acts 4:12; 1 Ti 2:5.

NOTE: "Saith the angel, 'Think ye that the Father yielded up His dearly beloved
Son without a struggle? No, no. It was even a struggle with the God of heaven,
whether to let guilty man perish, or to give His beloved Son to die for him.' Angels
were so interested for man's salvation that there could be found among them
those who would yield their glory and give their life for perishing man, 'But,'
said my accompanying angel, 'that would avail nothing. The transgression was
so great than an angel's life would not pay the debt. Nothing but the death and
intercessions of His Son would pay the ·debt and save lost man from hopeless
sorrow and misery.''' - Early Writings, pp. 151, 152.

AN ACCEPTED INTERCESSOR o Tuesday
June 4
5. What is also necessary in earthly courts and in heaven, and who only could
fill this role for man? Is 59 :16"-19; Heb 7 :25.

NOTE: "As the human was upon Him, he felt His need of strength from His
Father. He had select places of prayer. He loved to hold communion with His
Father in the solitude of the mountain. In this exercise His holy, human soul was
strengthened for the duties and trials of the day. Our Saviour identifies Himself
with our needs and weaknesses, in that He became a suppliant, a nightly peti-
tioner, seeking from His Father fresh supplies of strength, to come forth invig-
orated and refreshed, braced for duty and trial. He is our example in all things.
He is a brother in our infirmities, but not in possessing like passions...." -
Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 201, 202.

6. After Christ's sacrifice and resurrection, what incident shows that there was
still a union to be restored? Jn 20:14-17.

EVIDENCE OF A COMPLETE RESTORATION o Wednesday

June 5
7. What evidence shows that through Christ, overcomers can and will be changed
from unholy to holy? Mt 27:52,53.

8. What event will reveal that sin and unholiness no longer exist upon this
earth? 1 Cor 15 :51-54.

NOTE: "... All heaven will be emptied of the angels, while the waiting saints
will be looking for Him and gazing into heaven, as were the men of Galilee when
He ascended from the Mount of Olivet. Then only those who are holy, those who
have followed fully the meek Pattern, will with rapturous joy exclaim as they
behold Him, 'Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us.'
And they will be changed 'in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last
trump' - that trump which wakes the sleeping saints, and calls them forth from
their dusty beds, clothed with glorious immortality, and shouting, 'Victory! Vic-
tory over death and the grave!' The changed saints are then caught up together
with the angels to meet the Lord in the air, never more to be separated from the
object of their love." -Early Writings, p. 110.

UNION IN OUR DAY o Thursday

June 6
9. What simple illustration did the Lord give to show how closely we can be
united with Him? Jn 15 :1-3.

10. What does the Scripture teach concerning our individual probation and the
uncertainty of human intentions apart from God? Jas 4:13-15.

NOTE: "We believe without a doubt that Christ is soon coming. This is not a
fable to us; it is a reality. We have no doubt, neither have we had a doubt for
years, that the doctrines we hold today are present truth, and that we are nearing
the judgment. Weare preparing to meet Him who, escorted by a retinue of holy
angels, is to appear in the clouds of heaven to give the faithful and the just the
finishing touch of immortality. When He comes He is not to cleanse us of our
sins, to remove from us the defects in our characters, or to cure us of the infirm-

-24-
ities of our tempers and dispositions. If wrought for us at all, this work will all
be accomplished before that time. When the Lord comes, those who are holy will
be holy still. Those who have preserved their bodies and spirits in holiness, in
sanctification and honor, will then receive the finishing touch of immortality. But
those who are unjust, unsanctified, and filthy will remain so forever. No work
will then be done for them to remove their defects and give them holy characters.
The Refiner does not then sit to pursue His refining process and remove their
sins and their corruption. This is all to be done in these hours of probation. It is
110W that this work is to be accomplished for us." - Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 355.

REFORMATION AND HOLINESS

KEY TEXT: "And the foul' beasts had each of them six wings about him; and
they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night,
saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is,
and is to come (Rev 4:8).

ORIGINAL HOLINESS o Sunday

June 9
1. What brought disruption iu the holiness and harmony of heaven, even before
the creation of man? Is 14 :12-14.

NOTE: "Until this time [when God said to His Son, 'Let us make man in our
image,' and Satan was jealous of Jesus] all heaven had been in order, harmony,
and perfect subjection to the government of God. It was the highest sin to rebel
against His order and will. All heaven seemed in commotion. The angels were
marshaled in companies, each division with a higher commanding angel at its
head. Satan, ambitious to exalt himself, and unwilling to submit to the authority
of Jesus, was insinuating against the government of God. Some of the angels
sympathized with Satan in his rebellion, and others strongly contended for the
honor and wisdom of God in giving authority to His Son. There was contention
among the angels. Satan and his sympathizers were striving to reform the gov-
ernment of God. They wished to look into His unsearchable wisdom, and ascertain
His purpose in exalting Jesus and endowing Him with such unlimited power and
command. They rebelled against the authority of the Son. All the heavenly host
were summoned to appear before the Father to have each case decided. It was
there determined that Satan should be expelled from heaven, with all the angels
who had joined him in the rebellion. Then there was war in heaven. Angels were
engaged in the battle; Satan wished to conquer the Son of God and those who
were submissive to His will. But the good and true angels prevailed, and Satan,
with his followers, was driven from heaven." - Early Writings, pp. 145, 146.

2. With what degree of perfection was man created? Gen 1 :26, 27.

NOTE: "Man was to bear God's image, both in outward resemblance and in
character. Christ alone is 'the express image' (Hebrews 1 :3) of the Father; but

- 25-
man was formed in the likeness of God. His nature was in harmony with the will of
God. His mind was capable of comprehending divine things. His affections were
pure; his appetites and passions were under the control of reason. He was holy
and happy in bearing the image of God and in perfect obedience to His wiIL"-
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 45.

pROMISED RESTORATION o Monday

June 10
3. What free association existed between man and holy angels? Ps 8 :4-6.

NOTE: "Holy angels often visited the garden, and gave instruction to Adam
and Eve concerning their employment and also taught them concerning the rebel-
lion and fall of Satan. The angels warned them of Satan and cautioned them not
to separate from each other in their employment, for they might be brought in
contact with this fallen foe. The angels also enjoined upon them to follow closely
the directions God had given them, for in perfect obedience only were they safe.
Then this fallen foe could have no power over them." - Early Writings, p. 147.

4. To what state will those who are overcomers be ultimately restored? Mt

22:29, 30; 1 In 3:2.

NOTE: "The Lord has given me a view of other worlds. Wings were given me,
and an angel attended me from the city to a place that was bright and glorious.
The grass of the place was living green, and the birds there warbled a sweet
song. The inhabitants of the place were of all sizes; they were noble, majestic,
and lovely. They bore the express image of Jesus, and their countenances beamed
with holy joy, expressive of the freedom and happiness of the place. I asked one
of them why they were so much more lovely than those on the earth. The reply
was, 'We have lived in strict obedience to the commandments of God, and have

HOLINESS IN ALL D Thursday

9. What is the central theme of the angelic choirs? Is 6:1-3; Rev 4:8.

10. What interesting promise is given for all to consider? What must all have?
1 Cor 2:9, 14-16.

NOTE: "I then saw Jesus leading His people to the tree of life, and again we
heard His lovely voice, richer than any music that ever fell on mortal ear, saying,
'The leaves of this tree are for the healing of the nations. Eat ye all of it.' Upon
the tree of life was most beautiful fruit, of which the saints could partake freely.
In the city was a most glorious throne, from which proceeded a pure river of
water of life, clear as crystal. On each side of this river was the tree of life, and
on the banks of the river were other beautiful trees bearing fruit which was good
for food.
"Language is altogether too feeble to attempt a description of heaven. As the
scene rises before me, I am lost in amazement. Carried away with the surpassing
splendor and excellent glory, I lay down the pen, and exclaim, 'Oh, what love!
what wondrous love!' The most exalted language fails to describe the glory of
heaven or the matchless depths of a Saviour's love." - Early Writings, p. 289.

HOLINESS OF GOD AND HIS TEMPLE D Monday

June 17

3. What vision given to the prophet John of certain servants of God reveals the
greatest of Christ's attributes? Rev 4 :8.

- 27-
NOTE: "... The crowning glory of Christ's attributes is His holiness. The angels
bow before Him in adoration, exclaiming, 'Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.'
Revelation 4:8. He is declared to be glorious in His holiness. Study the character
of God. By beholding Christ, by seeking Him in faith and prayer, you may become
like Him." - Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 402.

SIGNIFICANCE OF GOD'S PRESENCE o Tuesday

June 18
5. What great event did the Ill·O!Jhet Daniel witness at this place? Dan 7 :9, 10.

NOTE: "The matchless splendor of the earthly tabernacle reflected to human

vision the glories of that heavenly temple where Christ our forerunner ministers
for us before the throne of God. The abiding place of the King of kings, where
thousand thousands minister unto Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand
stand before Him (Daniel 7 :10); that temple, filled with the glory of the eternal
throne, where seraphim, its shining guardians, veil their faces in adoration, could
find, in the most magnificent structure ever reared by human hands, but a faint
reflection of its vastness and glory. Yet important truths concerning the heavenly
sanctuary and the great work there carried forward for man's redemption were
taught by the earthly sanctuary and its services." - The Great Controversy, p. 414.

6. What is it that makes places or things holy? Ex 25:8; Rev 21:3.

NOTE: "Oh, that I could present before you, and before others of my brethren,
the necessity of an ever-abiding sense of God's presence, which would put such
restraint on your life that your moral and religious standing before the people
would be far different. We must reach a higher standard. Every soul, in going
out and coming in, in all business transactions, at all times and in all places,
should act with the consciousness that he is moving under the inspection of God
and heavenly angels, and that the Being who will judge every man's work for
eternity accompanied him at every step, observing all his actions and scrutinizing
all his motives. A consciousness of the presence of God and the peril of violating
His precepts would take possession of his entire being. What a change would be
seen in man, what a change in society, what evils would be left undone! There
would be exclamations from all mnks and among all ages: 'I cannot do this great
wickedness, and sin against God.' " - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 628.

HEAVEN'S HONOR ROLL

neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they
which are written in the Lamb's book of life" (Rev 21:27).

PIONEERS OF FAITH D Sunday

1. What is written concerning Abel and Enoch, both of whom lived in this
fallen earth? Heb 11 :4, 5.

2. What kind of character did Moses have? Heb 11 :24-26.

VICTORS D Monday
June 24

3. Under what circumstances were Moses and Elijah seen as citizens in heaven?
Mt 17:1-8.

NOTE: "Moses upon the mount of transfiguration was a witness to Christ's vic-
tory over sin and death. He represented those who shall come forth from the
grave at the resurrection of the just. Elijah, who had been translated to heaven
without seeing death, represented those who will be living upon the earth at
Christ's second coming, and who will be 'changed, in a moment, in the twinkling
of an eye, at the last trump;' when 'this mortal must put on immortality,' and
'this corruptible must put on incorruption.' 1 Cor. 15 :51-53. Jesus was clothed with
the light of heaven, as He will appear when He shall come 'the second time with-
out sin unto salvation.' For He will come 'in the glory of His Father with the
holy angels.' Heb. 9 :28, Mark 8 :38. The Saviour's promise to the disciples was now

-29-
fulfilled. Upon the mount the future kingdom of glory was represented in min-
iature, - Christ the King, Moses a representative of the risen saints, and Elijah
of the translated ones." - The Desire of Ages, pp. 421, 422.

4. What great multitude of jleople have their names written on the roll of h'onor
in heaven? Heb 11 :32-40.

NOTE: "Under the fiercest persecution these witnesses for Jesus kept their faith
unsullied. Though deprived of every comfort, shut away from the light of the
sun, making their home in the dark but friendly bosom of the earth, they uttered
no complaint. With words of faith, patience, and hope they encouraged one an-
other to endure privation and distress, The loss of every earthly blessing could
not force them to renounce their belief in Christ. Trials and persecution were but
steps bringing them nearer their rest and their reward." - The Great Contro-
versy, p, 41.

REWARD OF HOLINESS D Tuesday

June 25

5. Where in heaven did John the Revelator see this great number, and from
whence had they come? Rev 7:9-17.

NOTE: "Nearest the throne are those who were once zealous in the cause of
Satan, but who, plucked as brands from the burning, have followed their Saviour
with deep, intense devotion. Next are those who perfected Christian characters
in the midst of falsehood and infidelity, those who honored the law of God when
the Christian world declared it void, and the millions, of all ages, who were
martyred for their faith. And beyond is the 'great multitude, which no man could
number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, ... before the
throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.'
Revelation 7:9, Their warfare is ended, their victory won. They have run the
race and reached the prize. The palm branch in their hands is a symbol of their
triumph, the white robe an emblem of the spotless righteousness of Christ which
now is theirs." -The Great Controversy, p. 665.

6. What kind 'of city is the New Jel"Usalem? Rev 21 :1. 2.

RESTORATION D Wednesday
June 26

7. What education that began with Adam will be restored for the redeemed?
Gen 2:8, 19, 20.

NOTE: "Heaven is a school; its field of study, the universe; its teacher, the
Infinite One. A branch of this school was established in Eden; and, the plan
of redemption accomplished, education will again be taken up in the Eden school."
- Education, p. 301.

-30-
"Between the school established in Eden at the beginning and the school of the
hereafter there lies the whole compass of this world's history - the history of
human transgression and suffering, of divine sacrifice, and of victory over death
and sin. Not all the conditions of that first school of Eden will be found in the
school of the future life. No tree of knowledge of good and evil will afford oppor-
tunity for temptation. No tempter is there, no possibility of wrong. Every char-
acter has withstood the testing of evil, and none are longer susceptible to its
power." - Ibid., pp. 301, 302.

9. What unqualified and unlimited fellowship will exist in a universe of holy

beings? Rev 21 :24-27.

NOTE: "There[in the new Jerusalem] the redeemed shall know, even as also
they are known. The loves and sympathies which God Himself has planted in
the soul shall there find truest and sweetest exercise. The pure communion with
holy beings, the harmonious social life with the blessed angels and with the
faithful ones of all ages who have washed their robes and made them white in
the blood of the Lamb, the sacred ties that bind together 'the whole family in
heaven and earth' (Ephesians 3 :15) - these help to constitute the happiness of
the redeemed." - The Great Controversy, p. 677.

10. What encouragement should the overcomer take from these records? Rev
