Computer Assignment 2

1. Refer to (Appendix A: A.1 Dataset 1-Real Estate. Lind, Marchal and Wathen:
Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics, 14th Edition.) which reports
information on homes sold in the Denver, Colorado, area during last year.
 Sort the data into a table that shows the number of homes that have a pool versus
the number that don’t have a pool in each of the five townships. If a home is selected
at random, compute the probability that
i. The home is in Township 1 or has a pool.
ii. Given that it is in Township 3, that it has a pool.
iii. Has a pool and is in Township 3.
 Construct probability distribution of number of bedrooms and compute its mean
and variance from the data.

2. Refer to (Appendix A: A.2 Dataset 2- Major League Baseball Data. Lind, Marchal
and Wathen: Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics, 14th Edition.)
which reports information on the 30 Major League Baseball teams for the 2007
season. Set up a variable that divides the team into two groups, those that had a
winning season and those that did not. That is, create a variable to count the
teams that won 81 games or more, and those that won 80 or less. Next create a
new variable for attendance using 3 categories: attendance less than 2.0 million,
attendance of 2.0 upto 3.0 million, and attendance of 3.0 million or more.
i. Create a table that shows the number of teams with a winning season
versus those with a losing season by three categories of attendance. If a
team is selected at random, compute the following probabilities:
 Having a winning season.
 Having a winning season or attendance of more than 3.0 million.
 Given attendance of more than 3.0 million, having a winning
season.
 Having a losing season and drawing less than 2.0 million.
3. Refer to (Appendix A: A.4 Dataset 4-CIA International Economic and Demographic
Data. Lind, Marchal and Wathen: Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics,
14th Edition.) which reports information on the sample of 46 countries.
 Sort the data into a table that shows the number of countries which are member of
G-20 versus the number of countries having petroleum as a natural resource. If a
county is selected at random, compute the probability that
i. The country is a member of G-20 or has petroleum as natural resource.
ii. Given that petroleum is a natural resource, it is a member of G-20 also.
iii. Given that it is a member of OPEC, it is a member of G-20 also.
iv. The country is a member of G-20 and has petroleum as natural resource.
 Construct probability distribution number of countries have petroleum as a
natural resource and compute its mean and variance from the data.
