RIGHTE·OUSNESS

THROUGH CHRIST
SECOND QUARTER, 1979
SENIOR DIVISION
THIRTEENTH SABBATH OFFERING

The Thirteenth Sabbath Offering is designated to help Mision

Azteca. This is the name by which our work in Mexico is known.

In a little township called Tepoztlan, about fifty miles from

Ciudad de Mexico (Mexico City), there is a little group of believers
which has so increased that they need a place of worship. A visible
memorial should witness here for the work of the Lord in this area.

Several conferences have been held in Tepoztlan in past years and

like the Sabbath meetings, they have convened in the private quarters
of one of the believers. Naturally this means that during the week the
place is used for family activities and secular purposes and that is
not as convenient as would be desired.

The group appreciates the generosity and goodwill of those who

provide these facilities. Now, a nice corner building lot has been
donated to enable a small chapel to be built. The believers there are
not well-to-do but are in good courage and ready to cooperate and pro-
vide such as is in their power, especially the labor for the construc-
tion.

They asked for the help of their brethren around the world and the
General Conference Executive Committee considered this request and
approved the project to qualify for the Thirteenth Sabbath offering
made at the end of the second quarter in 1979. Several members of the
Executive Committe!:! have personal knowledge of this group and its
needs and also of the site for the proposed building and endorse the
project.

At the end of this quarter all are invited to sacrifice in order to

help with this project; please plan ahead to give generously.

For your brethren and sisters in Tepoztlan, Mexico

FOREWORD

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness:

for they shall be filled." Matthew 5:6.

"Righteousness is holiness, likeness to God, and 'God is love.' 1

John 4:16. It is conformity to the law of God, for 'all Thy command-
ments are righteousness' (Psalm 119:172), and 'love is the fulfilling of
the law' (Romans 13:10). Righteousness is love, and love is the light and
the life of God. The righteousness of God is embodied in Christ. We
receive righteousness by receiving Him." -The Mount of Blessing,
p.18.

This series of lessons, Righteousness Through Christ, is designed

to help all Sabbath school students to become more conscious of the
need to become righteous through the power given by Christ.

At this time when theologians and others find it fashionable to

discuss and dispute over various phases of the righteousness of Christ,
God is looking for a people who will demonstrate to the whole world,
His righteousness in their daily lives. These will be arguments that
none may dispute. He wants to impart His Spirit to His people for this
purpose.

The Bible and the books Steps to Christ, The Mount of Blessing,
The Desire of Ages, and Christ's Object Lessons, are particularly help-
ful in making a practical application of this subject and we would
encourage all to study them in connection with this series of lessons.
All need to be more conscious of their dependence on Christ and more
conscious of victories gained through that dependence.

A righteous character is formed by becoming a habitual over-

comer through entire dependence upon the power of the Holy Spirit
which has been supplied for this very purpose. This is the culmina-
tion of real reformation.

Lesson 1 Sabbath, April 7, 1979

GOD IS LOVE

The love of God is an infinite, eternal power, turning the curse to blessing, seek-
ing out sinners and recreating in them also, true love

KEY TEXT: "And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is
love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him."
1 John 4:16.

The Scope of God's Love o Sunday

April 1
1. What is a most outstanding quality of the Godhead? 1 John 4: 16.

" 'God is love' is written upon every opening bud, upon every spire of springing
grass. The lovely birds making the air vocal with their happy songs, the delicately
tinted flowers in their perfection perfuming the air, the lofty trees of the forest with
their rich foliage of living green-all testify to the tender, fatherly care of our God
and to His desire to make His children happy." -Steps to Christ, p. 10.

2. How has God manifested His love for fallen mankind? What shows the in-
finite extent of this love? John 3:16; I John 4:9.

"Before the Father He [Jesus] pleaded in the sinner's behalf, while the host of
heaven awaited the result with an intensity of interest that words cannot express.
Long continued was that mysterious communing-'the counsel of peace' (Zecha-
riah 6: 13) for the fallen sons of men. The plan of salvation had been laid before the
creation of the earth; for Christ is 'the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world'
(Revelation 13:8); yet it was a struggle, even with the King of the universe, to yield
up His son to die for the guilty race. But 'God so loved the world, that He gave His
only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.' John 3:16. Oh, the mystery of redemption! the love of God for a
world that did not love Him! Who can know the depths of that love which 'passeth
knowledge'? Through endless ages immortal minds, seeking to comprehend the
mystery of that incomprehensible love, will wonder and adore." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, pp. 63, 64.

An Everlasting Love o Monday

April 2
3. How does mercy reflect the love of God? What other qualities are con-
nected with love and mercy? Micah 7: 18; Ephesians 2:4-6.

4. What is revealed of the duration of God's love? How often are His mercies
renewed? Jeremiah 31:1, 3; Lamentations 3:22, 23.

"It is impossible for us, of ourselves, to escape from the pit of sin in which we are
sunken. Our hearts are evil, and we cannot change them. 'Who can bring a clean

-5-
thing out of an unclean? not one.' 'The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is
not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.' Job 14:4. Romans 8:7.
Education, culture, the exercise of the will, human effort, all have their proper
sphere, but here they are powerless. They may produce an outward correctness of
behavior, but they cannot change the heart; they cannot purify the springs of life.
There must be a power working from within, a new life from above, before men can
be changed from sin to holiness. That power is Christ. His grace alone can quicken
the lifeless faculties of the soul, and attract it to God, to holiness." -Steps to
Christ, p. 11.

Love Turns Curse to Blessing o Tuesday

April 3
5. Through this love what is made possible? What confirms this to the true
believer? 1 John 3:1; Romans 8:14-16.

"Our relations with one another should be pleasant. When we do right, the
testimony of our own spirit and the testimony of the Spirit of God bear witness that
the human mind is under the control ofthe divine mind.... His Word furnishes evi-
dence from which we may draw the conclusion that we are indeed His sons and
daughters.... True love for God carries with it true, reverential trust. And he who
loves God will love his brother also." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 193.

6. What had the love of God power to do in the time ofBalaam? What is said of
all who respond to the love of God? Deuteronomy 23:5; Romans 8:28.

"When trials come, remember that they are sent for your good.... When trials
and tribulations come to you know that they are sent in order that you may receive
from the Lord of glory renewed strength and increased humility, so that He may
safely bless and support and uphold you. In faith and with the hope that 'maketh
not ashamed,' lay hold of the promises of God." -My Life Today, p. 185.

True Love o Wednesday

April 4
7.. What God-like quality should be seen among "the sons of God"? 1 John
4:11; 3:16.

"After the descent of the Holy Spirit the disciples went forth to proclaim a risen
Saviour, their one desire the salvation of souls. They rejoiced in the sweetness of
the communion with saints. They were tender, thoughtful, self-denying, willing to
make any sacrifice for the truth's sake. In their daily association with one another
they revealed the love that Christ had commanded them to reveal. By unselfish
words and deeds they strove to kindle this love in other hearts." -Testimonies,
vol. 8, p. 241.

8. What shows the true nature of divine love as compared with human love?
What gives some idea of the scope of this love? Romans 5:7, 8.

"Herein His love commends itself in the most marvelous manner to the rebel-
lious race. What a sight for angels to behold! What a hope for man, 'that, while we

-6-
were yet sinners, Christ died for us'!" -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 246.
"Think of the Saviour's matchless love. While we were yet sinners, Christ died
to save us from eternal death." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 50.

God is the Source of All Loue o Thursday

April 5
9. What is the source of all genuine human love? 1 John 4:7, 19-21.

"The loveliness of the character of Christ will be seen in His followers. It was
His delight to do the will of God. Love to God, zeal for His glory, was the controlling
power in our Saviour's life. Love beautified and ennobled all His actions. Love is of
God. The unconsecrated heart cannot originate or produce it. It is found only in the
heart where Jesus reigns...." -Steps to Christ, p. 59.

10. What was the dominant wish of Paul for the Corinthian believers revealed
in the benediction of his epistle? 2 Corinthians 13: 14. Why has this always
been a favorite conclusion of Christian worship?

Lesson 2 Sabbath, April 14, 1979

LOVE PROVIDES A WAY

Man fell and cannot of himself be reconciled, so the love of God provided a Sub-
stitute whereby man can be restored
KEY TEXT: "And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without
shedding of blood is no remission." Hebrews 9:22.

Eden Lost o Sunday

AprilS
1. What is revealed concerning Adam before he disobeyed God?
a) The pattern and the purpose. Genesis 1:26, 27.
b) The responsibility over all creatures. Verse 28.
c) His origin and nature. Genesis 2:7.
d) The provision made for food and the restriction. Verses 9, 16, 17.

"God made man upright; He gave him noble traits of character, with no bias
toward evil. He endowed him with high intellectual powers, and presented before
him the strongest possible inducements to be true to his allegiance. Obedience, per-
fect and perpetual, was the condition of eternal happiness. On this condition he was
to have access to the tree of life." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.49.
2. What change was necessary when Adam disobeyed and sinned? Genesis
3:22-24.

" ... But after man's fall, holy angels were immediately commissioned to guard
the tree of life. Around these angels flashed beams of light having the appearance of a
glittering sword. None of the family of Adam were permitted to pass that barrier to
partake of the life-giving fruit; hence there is not an immortal sinner." -Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 60.

The Plan of Redemption Revealed o Monday

April 9
3. What plan was made known, whereby man could be reconciled with his
Maker? Genesis 3:15; Romans 5: 12-14, 18-21.

"Heavenly angels more fully opened to our first parents the plan that had been
devised for their salvation. Adam and his companion were assured that notwith-
standing their great sin, they were not to be abandoned to the control of Satan. The
Son of God had offered to atone, with His own life, for their transgression. A period
of probation would be granted them, and through repentance and faith in Christ
they might again become the children of God." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 66.

4. In what way did Cain's worship and offering indicate that he did not whole-
heartedly accept the divine plan? How did he know this was unacceptable?
Genesis 4:3-5.

-8-
"The two brothers erected their altars alike, and each brought an offering. Abel
presented a sacrifice from the flock, in accordance with the Lord's directions. 'And
the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering.' Fire flashed from heaven and
consumed the sacrifice. But Cain, disregarding the Lord's direct and explicit com-
mand, presented only an offering of fruit. There was no token from heaven to show
that it was accepted... ." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 71.

Only One Approved Plan D Tuesday

April 10
5. What counsels were given Cain concerning the divine plan and what was
the response? Genesis 4:6-8. What was the underlying motive in Cain?

"Because iniquity abounds, the love of many waxes cold. There are many who
have outgrown their advent faith. They are living for the world, and while saying in
their hearts, as they desire it shall be, 'My Lord delayeth His coming,' they are
beating their fellow servants. They do this for the same reason that Cain killed Abel.
Abel was determined to worship God according to the directions God had given.
This displeased Cain. He thought that his own plans were best, and that the Lord
would come to his terms. Cain in his offering did not acknowledge his dependence
upon Christ. He thought that his father Adam had been treated harshly in being
expelled from Eden. The idea of keeping that sin ever before the mind, and offering
the blood of the slain lamb as a confession of entire dependence upon a power out-
side of himself, was torture to the high spirit of Cain. Being the eldest, he thought
that Abel should follow his example. When Abel's offering was accepted of God, the
holy fire consuming the sacrifice, Cain's anger was exceedingly great. The Lord con-
descended to explain matters to him; but he would not be reconciled to God, and he
hated Abel because God showed him favor. He became so angry that he slew his
brother." -Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 77, 78.

6. How only may the penalty of sin be remitted and man restored to his
oril{inal relationship with God? John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 15:20-23.

" ...He who is trying to become holy by his own works in keeping the law, is
attempting an impossibility. All that man can do without Christ is polluted with
selfishness and sin. It is the grace of Christ alone, through faith, that can make us
holy." -Steps to Christ, p.60.

The Divine Origin of Redemption D Wednesday

April 11
7. In what simple terms does the apostle Paul describe the means of attaining
righteousness? Ephesians 2:5-8.

"The Lord saw our fallen condition; He saw our need of grace, and because He
loved our souls, He has given us grace and peace. Grace means favor to one who is
undeserving, to one who is lost. The fact that we are sinners, instead of shutting us
away from the mercy and love of God, makes the exercise of His love to us a positive
necessity in order that we may be saved." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G.
White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1117.

-9-
8. What Scriptural statement identifies clearly that the plan of reconciliation
originated with God and not with man? Colossians 1:19-21.

"The scheme of redemption far exceeds the comprehension of the human mind.
The great condescension on the part of God is a mystery that is beyond our
fathoming. The greatness of the plan cannot be fully comprehended, nor could in-
finite Wisdom devise a plan that would surpass it. It could only be successful by the
clothing of divinity with humanity, by Christ becoming man, and suffering the
wrath which sin has made because of the transgression of God's law. Through this
plan the great, the dreadful God can be just, and yet be the justifier of all who
believe in Jesus, and who receive Him as their personal Saviour.... " -The SDA
Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 5, p. 1133.
"Desponding soul, take courage, even though you have done wickedly. Do not
think that perhaps God will pardon your transgressions and permit you to come into
His presence. God has made the first advance. While you were in rebellion against
Him, He went forth to seek you...." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 188, 189.

The Extent of Redeeming Loue o Thursday

April 12
9. How did Jesus impressively illustrate the love and concern of God for each
and every individual? Matthew 18: 11-14.

"Jesus knows us individually, and is touched with the feeling of our infirmities.
He knows us all by name. He knows the very house in which we live, the name of
each occupant. He has at times given directions to His servants to go to a certain
street in a certain city, to such a house, to find one of His sheep.
"Every soul is as fully known to Jesus as if he were the only one for whom the
Saviour died." -The Desire of Ages, pp. 479, 480.

10. What is the essential element in the plan of salvation? What does this sig-
nify and how does it show the extent of God's love? Hebrews 9:22.

"Christ was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. To many it has
been a mystery why so many sacrificial offerings were required in the old dispensa-
tion, why so many bleeding victims were led to the altar. But the great truth that
was to be kept before men, and imprinted upon mind and heart, was this, 'Without
shedding of blood is no remission.' In every bleeding sacrifice was typified 'the Lamb
of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.' " -The SDA Bible Commentary,
E. G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 932.

Lesson Recapitulation o Friday

April 13
a. What is comprehended in the fact that "man fell"?
b. What was to be revealed in all true worship?
c. What is the only way of redemption and salvation?
d. What shows clearly that man is dependent upon God for Salvation?
e. How does the plan of redemption illustrate the extent of divine love?

Lesson 3 Sabbath, April 21, 1979

RIGHTEOUSNESS IS OF GOD

Righteousness and the law are inseparable and as man responds to the Gospel,
he is to be made righteous
KEY TEXT: "Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowl-
edge of God: I speak this to your shame." 1 Corinthians 15:34.

The Law and Righteousness o Sunday

April 15
1. According to the Word of God, what is the first thing necessary in order to
gain a knowledge of truth? Psalm 111:10.

"Those who are striving for an education in the sciences, but who have not
learned the lesson that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, are working help-
lessly and hopelessly, questioning the reality of everything. They may acquire an
education in the sciences, but unless they gain a knowledge of the Bible and a
knowledge of God, they are without true wisdom. The unlearned man, if he knows
God and Jesus Christ, has a more enduring wisdom than has the most learned man
who despises the instruction of God." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White
Comments, vol. 3, p. 1156.

2. What is the relationship between the commandments of God and right-

eousness? Psalms 111:3, 7, 8; 119:142, 172.

"So long as heaven and earth continue, the holy principles of God's law will
remain. His righteousness, 'like the great mountains' (Psalm 36:6), will continue, a
source of blessing, sending forth streams to refresh the earth." -The Mount of
Blessing, p. 50.

All Fall Short o Monday

April 16
3. How has the righteousness of God been manifested and how many have
fallen short of the demands of the law? Romans 3:19-23.

"Pardon and justification are one and the same thing. Through faith, the
believer passes from the position of a rebel, a child of sin and Satan, to the position
of a loyal subject of Christ Jesus, not because of an inherent goodness, but because
Christ receives him as His child by adoption.... Thus man, pardoned, and clothed
with the beautiful garments of Christ's righteousness, stands faultless before God."
-The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1070.

4. What is the full significance of transgression of the law? 1 John 3:4.

"There should be a clear understanding of that which constitutes sin, and we

should avoid the least approach to step over the boundaries from obedience to dis-
obedience." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1109.

-11-
Unrighteousness is Sin o Tuesday
April 17
5. What is incompatible with righteousness? What will hinder real knowl-
edge of God? 1 Corinthians 15:34.

"Righteousness is holiness, likeness to God, and 'God is love.' 1 John 4:16. It is

conformity to the law of God, for 'all Thy commandments are righteousness' (Psalm
119:172), and 'love is the fulfilling of the law' (Romans 13:10). Righteousness is love,
and love is the light and the life of God. The righteousness of God is embodied in
Christ. We receive righteousness by receiving Him." -The Mount of Blessing,
p.18.

6. What are some of the things listed as unrighteousness? Romans 1:28-31.

"The claims of God are equally binding upon all. Those who choose to neglect
the great salvation offered to them freely, who choose to serve themselves and
remain enemies of God, enemies of the self-sacrificing Redeemer, are earning their
wages. They are sowing to the flesh and will of the flesh reap corruption." -
Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 365.

Righteousness Revealed in the Gospel o Wednesday

April 18
7. By what means did the Lord teach the meaning and value of right-
eousness? What two things are associated? Matthew 13:45, 46; 6:33.

"Righteousness is right doing, and it is by their deeds that all will be judged.
Our characters are revealed by what we do. The works show whether the faith is gen-
uine." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 312.

8. Wherein is righteousness progressively revealed, according to the apostle

Paul? Romans 1:16, 17.

" ...From Paul's day to the present time, God by His Holy Spirit has been call-
ing after the Jew as well as the Gentile.... [Rom. 1:17 quoted.] It is of this gospel of
Christ, equally efficacious for Jew and Gentile, that Paul in his epistle to the
Romans declared he was not ashamed." -The Acts of the Apostles, p.380.

Man's Part o Thursday

April 19
9. What is man's part in securing righteousness? What change must take
place? Ephesians 4:22-24; Matthew 5:6.

" 'Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness.' The sense of
unworthiness will lead the heart to hunger and thirst for righteousness, and this
desire will not be disappointed. Those who make room in their hearts for Jesus will
realize His love. All who long to bear the likeness of the character of God shall be
satisfied. The Holy Spirit never leaves unassisted the soul who is looking unto Jesus.
He takes of the things of Christ and shows them unto him. If the eye is kept fixed on

-12-
Christ, the work of the Spirit ceases not until the soul is conformed to His image.
The pure element of love will expand the soul, giving it a capacity for higher attain-
ments, for increased knowledge of heavenly things, so that it will not rest short of the
fullness. [Matt. 5:6 quoted.]" -The Desire of Ages, p. 302.

10. By what contrast and opposites does the Lord reveal the nature of right-
eousness? What counsel applies especially for our time? Hebrews 1:9;
Proverbs 11: 18, 19; Hosea 10: 12, 13.

"The members of the church of Christ should gather up the divine rays of light
from Jesus, and reflect them to others, leaving a bright track heavenward in the
world. They are to be as the wise virgins, having their lamps trimmed and burning,
representing the character of Christ to the world. We are not to be satisfied with
anything short of this. We are not to be satisfied with our own righteousness, and
content without the deep movings of the Spirit of God." -Sons and Daughters of
God, p. 326.

Lesson Recapitulation o Friday

April 20
a. What relationship exists between the law and righteousness?

b. What condition exists when righteousness is not attained?

c. What lesson is to be learned from the contrast between righteousness and

sin?

d. How is it possible for man to become righteous in the sight of God?

e. What can and must man do?

-13-
Lesson 4 Sabbath, April 28, 1979

A DANGEROUS COUNTERFEIT

Satan leads men to be satisfied with self-righteousness, religious activity and

works while being devoid of His spirit and righteousness

KEY TEXT: "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal,
The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let everyone that nameth
the name of Christ depart from iniquity." 2 Timothy 2:19.

Judging Other's Motives o Sunday

April 22

1. How did Jesus forcibly show the danger confronting those who think they
are right? Matthew 7: 1-5. What leads one to condemn another?

"The sin that leads to the most unhappy results is the cold, critical, unforgiving
spirit that characterizes Pharisaism. When the religious experience is devoid of love,
Jesus is not there; the sunshine of His presence is not there. No busy activity or
Christless zeal can supply the lack. There may be a wonderful keenness of percep-
tion to discover the defects of others; but to everyone who indulges this spirit, Jesus
says, 'Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt
thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.' He who is guilty of
wrong is the first to suspect wrong. By condemning another he is trying to conceal or
excuse the evil of his own heart. It was through sin that men gained the knowledge of
evil; no sooner had the first pair sinned than they began to accuse each other; and
this is what human nature will inevitably do when uncontrolled by the grace of
Christ." -The Mount of Blessing, p. 126.

2. To whom has all judgement been given? When any other assumes the right
to judge the motives of another, what is he really doing? John 5:22; 2 Thes-
salonians 2:4.

"Christ is the only true standard of character, and he who sets himself up as a
standard for others is putting himself in the place of Christ. And since the Father
'hath committed all judgment unto the Son' (John 5:22), whoever presumes to judge
the motives of others is again usurping the prerogative of the Son of God. These
would-be judges and critics are placing themselves on the side of antichrist [2 Thes-
salonians 2:4 quoted]." -The Mount of Blessing, pp. 125, 126.

-14-
Danger of Zeal and Works D Monday
April 23
3. What warning is given by Paul to believers not to mistake zeal for merit?
What will identify true believers? 1 Corinthians 13: 1-7; Matthew 7:21-23.

"The spirit of unselfish labor for others gives depth, stability, and Christlike
loveliness to the character, and brings peace and happiness to its possessor. The
aspirations are elevated. There is no room for sloth or selfishness. Those who thus
exercise the Christian graces will grow and will become strong to work for God...."
-Steps to Christ, p. 80.

4. Against what danger did Jesus warn believers? What lesson is left par-
ticularly for our time? Matthew 15:9, 11, 16-20.

"The effort to earn salvation by one's own works inevitably leads men to pile up
human exactions as a barrier against sin. For, seeing that they fail to keep the law,
they will devise rules and regulations of their own to force themselves to obey. All
this turns the mind away from God to self. His love dies out of the heart, and with its
perishes love for his fellow men. A system of human invention, with its multitudi-
nous exactions, will lead its advocates to judge all who come short of the prescribed
human standard. The atmosphere of selfish and narrow criticism stifles the noble
and generous emotions, and causes men to become self-centered judges and petty
spies." -The Mount of Blessing, p. 123.

Blinded by Self-righteousness D Tuesday

April 24
ii. What mistaken ideas of righteousness developed in Old Testament times?
How were these corrected in the Christian dispensation? Romans 10:2-16.

"When we bring our lives to complete obedience to the law of God, regarding
God as our supreme Guide, and clinging to Christ as our hope of righteousness, God
will work in our behalf. This is a righteousness of faith, a righteousness hidden in a
mystery of which the worldling knows nothing, and which he cannot under-
stand .... " -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 1, p. 1118.

6. What lesson must all learn of Christ if they would become effective workers
for Him? How did the elder brother of the prodigal show that he did not
understand this lesson? Luke 5:29-32; 15:25-32.

"Self-righteousness not only leads men to misrepresent God, but makes them
coldhearted and critical toward their brethren. The elder son, in his selfishness and
jealousy, stood ready to watch his brother, to criticize every action, and to accuse
him for the least deficiency. He would detect every mistake, and make the most of
every wrong act. Thus he would seek to justify his own unforgiving spirit. Many
today are doing the same thing. While the soul is making its very first struggles
against a flood of temptations, they stand by, stubborn, self-willed, complaining,
accusing. They may claim to be children of God, but they are acting out the spirit of
Satan. By their attitude toward their brethren, these accusers place themselves
where God cannot give them the light of His countenance." -Christ's Object
Lessons, p. 210.

Looking in Faith D Wednesday
April 25
7. Contrary to human methods, how did the Spirit of Christ work in the early
Christian church? John 12:32.

"Seek, and you shall find. God is seeking you, and the very desire you feel to
come to Him is but the drawing of His Spirit. Yield to that drawing." -The Mount
of Blessing, p. 131.
"Christ does not drive but draws men unto Him. The only compulsion which He
employs is the constraint of love. When the church begins to seek for the support of
secular power, it is evident that she is devoid of the power of Christ-the constraint
of divine love." -Ibid., p. 127.

8. Where should the chief interest of every Christian be directed? What Old
Testament experience illustrates the lifegiving virtue in doing this?
Galatians 6: 14-16; Numbers 21 :8,9.

"He who looks often upon the cross of Calvary, remembering that his sins
placed the Saviour there, will never try to estimate the degree of his guilt in com-
parison with that of others. He will not climb upon the judgement seat to bring
accusation against another. There can be no spirit of criticism or self-exaltation on
the part of those who walk in the shadow of Calvary's cross." -The Mount of
Blessing, p. 128.

True Righteousness in Christians D Thursday

April 26
9. What is the only sure foundation for righteousness? Matthew 7:24, 25;
2 Timothy 2:19.

"Christ, the true foundation, is a living stone; His life is imparted to all that are
built upon Him. 'Ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house.' 'Each
several building, fitly framed together, groweth into a holy temple in the Lord.'
1 Peter 2:5, R.V.; Ephesians 2:21, R.V. The stones became one with the foundation;
for a common life dwells in all. That building no tempest can overthrow; for-'That
which shares the life of God, with Him surviveth alL'
"But every building erected on other foundation than God's word will fall. He
who, like the Jews in Christ's day, builds on the foundation of human ideas and
opinions, of forms and ceremonies of man's invention, or on any works that he can do
independently of the grace of Christ, is erecting his structure of character upon the
shifting sand. The fierce tempests of temptation will sweep away the sandy founda-
tion and leave his house a wreck on the shores of time." -The Mount of Blessing,
pp. 150, 151.

10. What parable is given as a warning against self-righteousness in Chris-

tians who may not suspect this of themselves? Matthew 20: 1-10.

"Christ warned the disciples who had been first called to follow Him, lest the
same evil should be cherished among them. He saw that the weakness, the curse of
the church, would be a spirit of self-righteousness. Men would think they could do

-16-
something toward earning a place in the kingdom of heaven. They would imagine
that when they had made certain advancement, the Lord would come in to help
them. Thus there would be an abundance of self and little of Jesus. Many who had
made a little advancement would be puffed up and think themselves superior to
others. They would be eager for flattery, jealous if not thought most important.
Against this danger Christ seeks to guard His disciples." -Christ's Object Lessons,
pp. 400, 401.

Lesson Recapitulation o Friday

April 27
a. What is to be judged by men? What is not to be judged?

b. What danger confronts workers who are zealous for the work?

c. How can we be on guard against self-righteousness?

d. What is the contrast between real righteousness and the counterfeit?

e. What manifestation of righteousness is dangerous to believers and

workers?

"The death of Abel was in consequence of Cain's refusing to accept God's plan
in the school of obedience, to be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, typified by the
sacrificial offerings pointing to Christ. Cain refused the shedding of blood, which
symbolized the blood of Christ to be shed for the world." -The SDA Bible Com-
mentary, E. G. White Comments, vo!. 6, p. 1109.

Lesson 5 Sabbath, May 5, 1979

THE POWER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

The natural man must receive divine power to become a spiritual man, holy and
righteous, and continually receive power to maintain this experience and avoid
self-righteousness
KEY TEXT: "It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a
natural body, and there is a spiritual body." 1 Corinthians 15:44.

Two Contrasting Classes o Sunday

April 29
1. Into what two categories do the Scriptures classify all mankind? 1 Corin-
thians 15:44.

" ...The old nature, born of blood and the will of the flesh, cannot inherit the
kingdom of God. The old ways, the hereditary tendencies, the former habits, must be
given up; for grace is not inherited. The new birth consists in having new motives,
new tastes, new tendencies. Those who are begotten unto a new life by the Holy
Spirit, have become partakers of the divine nature, and in all their habits and prac-
tices, they will give evidence of their relationship to Christ...." -Review and
Herald, April 12, 1892.

2. How does the natural man come into existence? What must he expect? Job
14: 1, 2; John 3:6 (first part).

A Change Possible o Monday

April 30
3. What is the contrast shown by John between the natural born sons of man
and the sons of God? What power is necessary to become a son of God? John
1:12, 13. (Compare Matthew 1:18.)

"When Jesus speaks of the new heart, He means the mind, the life, the whole
being. To have a change of heart is to withdraw the affections from the world, and
fasten them upon Christ. To have a new heart is to have a new mind, new purposes,
new motives. What is the sign of a new heart?-a changed life. There is a daily,
hourly dying to selfishness and pride." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White
Comments, vol. 4, pp. 1164, 1165.

4. What radical change must be seen in a converted soul? What must be

replaced and in which way? Romans 8:5-10.

"Christ's plan is the only safe one. He declares, 'Behold, I make all things new.'
'If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.' Christ gives man no encouragement
to think that He will accept a patchwork character, made up mostly of self, with a
little of Christ. This is the condition of the Laodicean church. At first there seems to
be some of self and some of Christ. But soon it is all of self and none of Christ. The

-18-
root of selfishness is revealed...." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White
Comments, vol. 6, p. 1101.

Maintaining the Spiritual Life o Tuesday

May 1
5. What is manifested in the converted soul? How is this condition main-
tained? 2 Corinthians 4:6-11.

"One of the most earnest prayers recorded in the Word of God is that of David
when he pled, 'Create in me a clean heart, 0 God.' God's response to such a prayer
is, A new heart will I give you. This is a work that no finite man can do. Men and
women are to begin at the beginning, seeking God most earnestly for a true Chris-
tian experience. They are to feel the creative power of the Holy Spirit. They are to
receive the new heart, that is kept soft and tender by the grace of heaven. The selfish
spirit is to be cleansed from the soul. They are to labor earnestly and with humility
of heart, each one looking to Jesus for guidance and encouragement... ." -The
SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 4, p. 1165.

6. How is spiritual life to be maintained? What cautions were given the

Hebrew believers in this regard? Romans 10:9·13; Hebrews 3:12-14.

"The Lord works in cooperation with the will and action of the human agent. It
is the privilege and duty of every man to take God at His word, to believe in Jesus as
his personal Saviour, and to respond eagerly, immediately, to the gracious proposi-
tions which He makes. He is to study to believe and obey the divine instruction in
the Scriptures. He is to base his faith not on feeling but upon the evidence and the
Word of God." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7,
p.928.

The Great Need o Wednesday

May 2
7. What will be manifest in those who accept the heavenly gift and accept the
righteousness of Christ? Jude 21, 23-25.

"This scripture [Jude from verse twenty to the close of the chapter] brings to
view the fact that there is most earnest work to be done, and we need divine intu-
ition that we may know how to work for souls ready to perish. There are souls to be
plucked out of the fire, there are souls who are to be treated with the tenderest com-
passion. Workers are needed who have learned in the school of Christ His method of
saving souls." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7,
p.953.

8. What is one of the great dangers for Laodiceans? Does this refer to worldly
or spiritual wealth and is there need? Revelation 3:17,18; I Timothy 6:9-12.

"Christ sees that which man does not see. He sees the sins which, if not
repented of, will exhaust the patience of a long-suffering God. Christ cannot take up
the names of those who are satisfied in their own self-sufficiency." - The SDA Bible
Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 964.

-19-
Righteousness to Prevail o Thursday
May 3
9. What mighty power will be used to call the righteous from their graves?
Matthew 24:30, 31; 1 Thessalonians 4:16.

" .. .In this book [Revelation] are depicted scenes that are now in the past, and
some of eternal interest that are taking place around us; other of its prophecies will
not receive their complete fulfilment until the close of time, when the last great con-
flict between the powers of darkness and the Prince of heaven will take place." -
Review and Herald, August 31, 1897.

10. How complete wil be the cleansing of the universe from sin by the power of
righteousness? Revelation 21 :27; Isaiah 35:8; 60: 18-21.

"The hand of Omnipotence is at no loss for ways and means to accomplish His
purposes." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 946.
"Water will never destroy the earth again, but the weapons of God are con-
cealed in the bowels of the earth, which He will draw forth to unite with the fire from
heaven to accomplish His purpose in the destruction of all those who would not
receive the message of warning and purify their souls in obeying the truth and being
obedient to the laws of God." -Ibid.

Lesson 6 Sabbath, May 12, 1979

JUSTIFICATION

Justification is pardon and comes by faith or believing in Christ and His pro-
visions for those who really commit their all to Him

KEY TEXT: "For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith:
as it is written, The just shall live by faith." Romans 1:17.

Definitions o Sunday
May 6
1. What is to be understood by being "justified" in the sight of God? 1 Tim-
othy 3:16.

"Justification is the opposite of condemnation." -The SDA Bible Commen-

tary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1070.
"Pardon and justification are one and the same thing." -Ibid.
"The righteousness by which we are justified is imputed; the righteousness by
which we are sanctified is imparted. The first is our title to heaven, the second is our
fitness for heaven." -Review and Herald, June 4, 1895.

2. What does Scripture clearly state regarding the guilty? What attributes of
God are also mentioned? Exodus 34:6, 7.

"True sanctification means perfect love, perfect obedience, perfect conformity

to the will of God. We are to be sanctified to God through obedience to the truth.
Our conscience must be purged from dead works to serve the living God. We are not
yet perfect; but it is our privilege to cut away from the entanglements of self and sin,
and advance to perfection. Great possibilities, high and holy attainments, are
placed within the reach of all." -The Acts of the Apostles, p.565.

Justified by Grace o Monday

May 7
3. What must all believers know and understand concerning good works in
relation to justification? Romans 3:20.

" .. .In our knowledge of Christ and His love the kingdom of God is placed in the
midst of us. Christ is revealed to us in sermons and chanted to us in songs. The
spiritual banquet is set before us in rich abundance. The wedding garment, provided
at infinite cost, is freely offered to every soul. By the messengers of God are
presented to us the righteousness of Christ, justification by faith, the exceeding
great and precious promises of God's word, free access to the Father by Christ, the
comfort of the Spirit, the well-grounded assurance of eternal life in the kingdom of
God. What could God do for us that He has not done in providing the great supper,
the heavenly banquet?" -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 317.

-21-
4. Through what means may all be justified? Romans 3:24; Titus 3:7.

" ...Holiness is not rapture: it is an entire surrender of the will to God; it is liv-
ing by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God; it is doing the will of our
heavenly Father; it is trusting God in trial, in darkness as well as in the light; it is
walking by faith and not by sight; it is relying on God with unquestioning con-
fidence, and resting in His love." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 51.

Just Men Made Perfect D Tuesday

May 8
5. What does the shed blood of Christ also bring the repentant sinner? Romans
5:9.

"God is approached through Jesus Christ, the Mediator, the only way through
which He forgives sins. God cannot forgive sins at the expense of His justice, His
holiness, and His truth. But He does forgive sins and that fully. There are no sins He
will not forgive in and through the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the sinner's only hope,
and if he rests here in sincere faith, he is sure of pardon and that full and free. There
is only one channel and that is accessible to all, and through that channel a rich and
abundant forgiveness awaits the penitent, contrite soul and the darkest sins are for-
given." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7, pp. 912,
913.

6. What kind of people must all be to have part in the true church of God?
Hebrews 12:22, 23.

"The Lord requires perfection from His redeemed family. He calls for perfec-
tion in character-building. Fathers and mothers especially need to understand the
best methods of training children, that they may cooperate with God. Men and
women, children and youth, are measured in the scales of heaven in accordance with
that which they reveal in their home life. A Christian in the home is a Christian
everywhere. Religion brought into the home exerts an influence that cannot be mea-
sured." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 5, p. 1085.

Cooperating with Christ D Wednesday

May 9
7. What should the repentant sinner remember as he recognizes Christ as His
personal Saviour? Why? Isaiah 51:1.

" ...When the sinner believes that Christ is his personal Saviour, then, ac-
cording to his unfailing promises, God pardons his sin, and justifies him freely. The
repentant soul realizes that his justification comes because Christ, as his substitute
and surety, has died for him, is his atonement and righteousness." -Review and
Herald, November 4, 1890.

8. What is expected of all who would receive and retain justification? 2 Corin-
thians 7:1; 1 John 3:23.

- 22-
"But while God can be just, and yet justify the sinner through the merits of
Christ, no man can cover his soul with the garments of Christ's righteousness while
practicing known sins, or neglecting known duties. God requires the entire sur-
render of the heart, before justification can take place; and in order for man to retain
justification, there must be continual obedience, through active, living faith that
works by love and purifies the soul." -Review and Herald, November 4, 1890.

Certainty of Justification o Thursday

May 10
9. What truth was clearly exposed by the prophet Isaiah concerning justifica-
tion in the dispensation before Christ came as Son of Man? Isaiah 50:7-9.

"The work of God in the earth presents, from age to age, a striking similarity in
every great reformation or religious movement. The principles of God's dealing with
men are ever the same. The important movements of the present have their parallel
in those of the past, and the experience of the church in former ages has lessons of
great value for our own time." -The Great Controversy, p.343.

10. What certainty of being justified do we have in the Christian dispensa-

tion? What is the foundation of this assurance? Romans 8:31-33; 1:17.

" ...Luther was one day devoutly climbing these steps, when suddenly a voice
like thunder seemed to say to him: 'The just shall live by faith.' Romans 1:17. He
sprang to his feet and hastened from the place in shame and horror. 'That text never
lost its power upon his soul. From that time he saw more clearly than ever before the
fallacy of trusting to human works for salvation, and necessity of constant faith in
the merits of Christ... ." -The Great Controversy, p. 125.

Lesson Recapitulation o Friday

May 11
a. What is the essential definition of justification?

b. What is Christ's part and what is man's part in justification?

c. What is the purpose of God in justification?

d. What is expected of the justified believer?

e. What makes justification a certainty to the believer?

Lesson 7 Sabbath, May 19, 1979

SANCTIFICATION

Justification having been imputed, righteousness must become part of the

believer's life perfecting him in the image of Christ

KEY TEXT: "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your
whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the com-
ing of our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

The Next Step o Sunday

May 13
1. What simple illustration did the apostle use to show how our faith is
imputed for righteousness? Genesis 15:1-6; Romans 4:17-25.

"In order to meet the requirements of the law, our faith must grasp the right-
eousness of Christ, accepting it as our righteousness. Through union with Christ,
through acceptance of His righteousness by faith, we may be qualified to work the
works of God, to be colaborers with Christ...." -Selected Messages, book 1,
p.374.

2. After righteousness is imputed, what further step is also necessary?

"The righteousness by which we are justified is imputed; the righteousness by

which we are sanctified is imparted. The first is our title to heaven, the second is our
fitness for heaven." -Review and Herald, June 4, 1895.

Examples of Sanctification o Monday

May 14
3. What was the purpose of God with His people Israel? What is His purpose
for His people in the last days? Isaiah 60: 1-3.

" ...The last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the
world, is a revelation of His character of love. The children of God are to manifest
His glory. In their own life and character they are to reveal what the grace of God has
done for them.
"The light of the Sun of Righteousness is to shine forth in good works-in words
of truth and deeds of holiness." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 415, 416.

4. Why is sanctification necessary? What is meant by sanctification? Romans

8:7; 1 Thessalonians 4:3, 4.

"It is the work of conversion and sanctification to reconcile men to God by

bringing them into accord with the principles of His law. In the beginning, man was
created in the image of God. He was in perfect harmony with the nature and the law

-24-
of God; the principles of righteousness were written upon his heart. But sin al-
ienated him from his Maker. He no longer reflected the divine image. His heart was
at war with the principles of God's law. 'The carnal mind is enmity against God: for
it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.' Romans 8:7. But 'God so
loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son,' that man might be reconciled
to God. Through the merits of Christ he can be restored to harmony with his Maker.
His heart must be renewed by divine grace; he must have a new life from above. This
change is the new birth, without which, says Jesus, 'he cannot see the kingdom of
God.' " -The Great Controversy, p.467.

A Growing Experience o Tuesday

May 15
5. What power is needed in the process of sanctification? What is the source of

.' that power? John 14:26; 16: 13.

"Our sanctification is the work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is
the fulfillment of the covenant God has made with those who bind themselves up
with Him, to stand with Him, His Son, and His Spirit in holy fellowship. Have you
been born again? Have you become a new being in Christ Jesus? Then cooperate
with the three great powers of heaven who are working in your behalf." -The SDA
Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 908.

6. What shows that true sanctification is not an instantaneous experience?

Hebrews 12:1,2; 2 Peter 3:18 (first part).

"The Scriptures plainly show that the work of sanctification is progressive.

When in conversion the sinner finds peace with God through the blood of the atone-
ment, the Christian life has but just begun. Now he is to 'go on unto perfection;' to
grow up 'unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.' ...And Peter sets
before us the steps by which Bible sanctification is to be attained: [2 Peter 1:5-10
quoted]." -The Great Controversy, p.470.

Step by Step o Wednesday

May 16
7. What provision is made for progress in sanctification? How does this keep
the converted sinners from becoming exalted or self-righteous? 2 Peter 1:5-
10.

"Those who experience the sanctification of the Bible will manifest a spirit of
humility. Like Moses, they have had a view of the awful majesty of holiness, and
they see their own unworthiness in contrast with the purity and exalted perfection of
the Infinite One.
"The prophet Daniel was an example of true sanctification. His long life was
filled up with noble service for his Master. He was a man 'greatly beloved' (Daniel
10: 11) of Heaven. Yet instead of claiming to be pure and holy, this honored prophet
identified himself with the really sinful of Israel as he pleaded before God in behalf
of his people: [Daniel 9:18 quoted]." -The Great Controversy, p.470.

8. What is a common modern error concerning sanctification? How can this be

a danger to those professing present truth? James 2:17-20.

-25-
"The sanctification now gaining prominence in the religious world carries with
it a spirit of self-exaltation and a disregard for the law of God that mark it as foreign
to the religion of the Bible. Its advocates teach that sanctification is an instan-
taneous work, by which, through faith alone, they attain to perfect holiness. 'Only
believe,' say they, 'and the blessing is yours.' No further effort on the part of the
receiver is supposed to be required. At the same time they deny the authority of the
law of God, urging that they are released from obligation to keep the command-
ments. But is it possible for men to be holy, in accord with the will and character of
God, without coming into harmony with the principles which are an expression of
His nature and will, and which show what is well pleasing to Him?" -The Great
Controversy, p. 471.

Like Jesus o Thursday

May 17
9. How much is involved in this work of sanctification and to what extent?
I Thessalonians 5:23.

"The sanctification set forth in the Scriptures embraces the entire being-
spirit, soul, and body... .In the time of ancient Israel every offering brought as a
sacrifice to God was carefully examined. If any defect was discovered in the animal
presented, it was refused; for God had commanded that the offering be 'without
blemish.' So Christians are bidden to present their bodies, 'a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God.' In order to do this, all their powers must be preserved in the
best possible condition. Every practice that weakens physical or mental strength un-
fits man for the service of his Creator... ." -The Great Controversy, p.473.

10. Why must sanctification continue making the believer a complete over-
comer? As what does the Lord consider such ones? Hebrews 2:11.

"Jesus teaches us to call His Father our Father. He is not ashamed to call us
brethren. Hebrews 2:11. So ready, so eager, is the Saviour's heart to welcome us as
members of the family of God, that in the very first words we are to use in
approaching God He places the assurance of our divine relationship, 'Our Father.' "
-The Mount of Blessing, p. 103.

Lesson Recapitulation o Friday

May 18
a. In what does sanctification differ from justification as considered in the
previous lesson?

b. Why must the people of God be sanctified?

c. How is it shown by its nature, sanctification is a continuing process rather

than the work of a moment?

d. What may we learn as we consider the order of progression mentioned by

Peter?

e. What is necessary in fallen man in order to rejoin the heavenly family?

Lesson 8 Sabbath, May 26, 1979

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND SANCTIFICATION

Because true sanctification cannot be obtained by human power alone, the Holy
Spirit is divinely delegated to make this possible

KEY TEXT: "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of
God." Romans 8:14.

The Divine Agency D Sunday

May 20
1. Who were closely associated in the plan of redemption? Romans 8:26, 27, 34.

"The Godhead was stirred with pity for the race, and the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Spirit gave Themselves to the working out of the plan of redemption." -
Counsels on Health, p. 222.

2. Who is continuing to work with man for the salvation of mankind? John
14:16, 17; 16:7-14.

"The Spirit of God is freely bestowed to enable every man to lay hold upon the
means of salvation." -The Great Controversy, p. 262.

Like the Son of Man D Monday

May 21
3. What did Christ leave for us to be used by the Holy Spirit in the work of
atonement and sanctification? John 6:63.

" ... [John 6:63 quoted.] But spiritual things are spiritually discerned, and the
reason of your lack of interest is that you lack the Spirit of God. When the heart is
brought into harmony with the word, a new life will spring up within you, a new light
will shine upon every line of the word, and it will become the voice of God to your
soul. ..." -Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 183.

4. How completely can a man be restored to his original character? I Thes-

salonians 3:13; Romans 6:22.

"Holiness is wholeness to God. The soul is surrendered to God. The will, and
even the thoughts, are brought into subjection to the will of Christ. The love of Jesus
fills the soul, and is constantly going out in a clear, refreshing stream, to make glad
the hearts of others." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments,
vol. 6, p. 1076.

-27-
Necessity of Holy Spirit D Tuesday
May 22
5. What is the power that makes righteous living possible? What is the agency
actually working in the believer? Philippians 2:12, 13.

"This work can be accomplished only through faith in Christ, by the power of
the indwelling Spirit of God. Paul admonishes believers: [Philippians 2:12, 13,
quoted]. The Christian will feel the promptings of sin, but he will maintain a con-
stant warfare against it. Here is where Christ's help is needed. Human weakness
becomes united to divine strength, and faith exclaims: 'Thanks be to God, which
giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.' 1 Corinthians 15:57." -The
Great Controversy, pp. 469, 470.

6. What halts the work of the Holy Spirit and sanctification? Isaiah 59: 1, 2;
Hebrews 6:4-6.

"Let none deceive themselves with the belief that they can become holy while
willfully violating one of God's requirements. The commission of a known sin
silences the witnessing voice of the Spirit and separates the soul from
God....Though John in his epistles dwells so fully upon love, yet he does not hesi-
tate to reveal the true character of that class who claim to be sanctified while living
in transgression of the law of God...." -The Great Controversy, p. 472.

A Divine Leader D Wednesday

May 23
7. What is promised to those who really hunger and thirst after righteous-
ness? How is this so? Matthew 5:6.

"If you have a sense of need in your soul, if you hunger and thirst after right-
eousness, this is an evidence that Christ has wrought upon your heart, in order that
He may be sought unto to do for you, through the endowment of the Holy Spirit,
those things which it is impossible for you to do for yourself. We need not seek to
quench our thirst at shallow streams; for the great fountain is just above us, of whose
abundant waters we may freely drink, if we will rise a little higher in the pathway of
faith." -The Mount of Blessing, p. 19.

8. What is the work of the Holy Spirit for believers as they would go forward
in sanctification? Romans 8: 14.

"We build on Christ by obeying His word. It is not he who merely enjoys right-
eousness, that is righteous, but he who does righteousness. Holiness is not rapture;
it is the result of surrendering all to God; it is doing the will of our heavenly Father.
When the children of Israel were encamped on the borders of the Promised Land, it
was not enough for them to have a knowledge of Canaan, or to sing the songs of
Canaan. This alone would not bring them into possession of the vineyards and olive
groves of the goodly land. They could make it theirs in truth only by occupation, by
complying with the conditions, by exercising living faith in God, by appropriating
His promises to themselves, while they obeyed His instruction.
" ...Not those whose hearts are touched by the Spirit, not those who now and
then yield to its power, but they that are led by the Spirit, are the sons of God." -
The Mount of Blessing, pp. 149, 150.

The Last Work o Thursday
May 24
9. What is essential to give power needed to bring a revival with work of
thorough reformation amongst God's people? Zechariah 4:6.

"Men of clear understanding are needed now. God calls upon those who are
willing to be controlled by the Holy Spirit to lead out in a work of thorough reforma-
tion. I see a crisis before us, and the Lord calls for His laborers to come into line....
"I have been deeply impressed by scenes that have recently passed before me in
the night season. There seemed to be a great movement-a work of revival-going
forward in many places. Our people were moving into line, responding to God's
call. ..." -Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 514, 515.

10. How will the Holy Spirit inspire reformers for the finishing of the work?
How is the spirit of compromise to be avoided? 2 Corinthians 6: 17.

"In vision I saw two armies in terrible conflict. One army was led by banners
bearing the world's insignia; the other was led by the bloodstained banner of Prince
Immanuel. Standard after standard was left to trail in the dust as company after
company from the Lord's army joined the foe and tribe after tribe from the ranks of
the enemy united with commandment-keeping people of God. An angel flying in the
midst of heaven put the standard of Immanuel into many hands, while a might gen-
eral cried out with a loud voice: 'Come into line. Let those who are loyal to the com-
mandments of God and the testimony of Christ now take their position. Come out
from among them, and be ye separate, and touch not the unclean, and I will receive
you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters. Let all
who will come up to the help of the Lord, to the help of the Lord against the
mighty.' " -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 41.

Lesson 9 Sabbath, June 2, 1979

FORGIVENESS

Forgiveness is a gift of grace for the repentant and this spirit of forgiveness
must be cultivated in all who would follow Christ
KEY TEXT: "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the
man Christ Jesus." 1 Timothy 2:5.

Through Christ D Sunday

May 27
1. What is the purpose and basis of all true forgiveness? Isaiah 55:7;
Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14.

"The law requires righteousness,-a righteous life, a perfect character; and this
man has not to give. He cannot meet the claims of God's holy law. But Christ, com-
ing to the earth as man, lived a holy life, and developed a perfect character. These
He offers as a free gift to all who will receive them. His life stands for the life of men.
Thus they have remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.
More than this, Christ imbues men with the attributes of God. He builds up the
human character after the similitude of the divine character, a goodly fabric of spir-
itual strength and beauty. Thus the very righteousness of the law is fulfilled in the
believer in Christ. God can 'be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in
Jesus.' Romans 3:26." -The Desire of Ages, p.762.

2. What part does Christ have in the forgiveness of sinners? Hebrews 7:25;
Luke 23:34; 1 Timothy 2:5.

" ...He [Christ] was to be an example to all the human family. He qualified
Himself to be, not only the representative of the race, but their advocate, so that
every soul if he will may say, I have a Friend at court. He is a High Priest that can be
touched with the feelings of our infirmities." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G.
White Comments, vol. 7, p. 930.

Justice and Mercy Meet D Monday

May 28
3. What experience was used by Jesus to give unmistakable evidence that He
had power to forgive sins? Luke 5: 18-26.

"The paralytic found in Christ healing for both the soul and the body. The
spiritual healing was followed by physical restoration. This lesson should not be
overlooked. There are today thousands suffering from physical disease, who, like the
paralytic, are longing for the message, 'Thy sins are forgiven.' The burden of sin,
with its unrest and unsatisfied desires, is the foundation of their maladies. They can
find no relief until they come to the Healer of the soul. The peace which He alone
give would impart vigor to the mind, and health to thebody." -The Desire of Ages,
p.270.

-30-
4. What must be always associated with forgiveness? What shows that God
does not consider man from the legalistic point of view but from the spirit-
ual? Psalm 86:5; Micah 7: 18.

"We should not try to lessen our guilt by excusing sin. We must accept God's
estimate of sin, and that is heavy indeed. Calvary alone can reveal the terrible enor-
mity of sin. If we had to bear our own guilt, it would crush us. But the sinless One
has taken our place; though undeserving, He has borne our iniquity....Glorious
truth!-just to His own law, and yet the Justifier of all that believe in Jesus. [Micah
7:18 quoted.]" -The Mount of Blessing, p. 116.

Fruit of True Penitence o Tuesday

May 29
5. How did Christ show unmistakably that forgiveness does not lessen the sin-
ner's obligation and consciousness of his debt? Matthew 18:21-35.

"How many are today manifesting the same spirit. When the debtor pleaded
with his lord for mercy, he had no true sense ofthe greatness of his debt. He did not
realize his helplessness. He hoped to deliver himself. 'Have patience with me,' he
said, 'and I will pay thee all.' So there are many who hope by their own works to
merit God's favor. They do not realize their helplessness. They do not accept the
grace of God as a free gift, but are trying to build themselves up in self-righteous-
ness. Their own hearts are not broken and humbled on account of sin, and they are
exacting and unforgiving toward others. Their own sins against God, compared with
their brother's sins against them, are as ten thousand talents to one hundred
pence-nearly one million to one; yet they dare to be unforgiving." -Christ's Object
Lessons, pp. 245-247.
"But the teaching of this parable should not be misapplied. God's forgiveness
toward us lessens in no wise our duty to obey Him. So the spirit of forgiveness toward
our fellow men does not lessen the claim of just obligation." -Ibid.

6. What does the sinner need? How far are sins removed from one who for-
sakes sin and does not return to a sinful life? Psalms 51:10; 103:12.

"When we feel that we have sinned and cannot pray, it is then the time to pray.
Ashamed we may be and deeply humbled, but we must pray and believe." -The
Mount of Blessing, p. 115.

Human Forgiveness o Wednesday

May 30
7. When a sinner is forgiven what must he also do? What is the measure of
forgiveness? Luke 11 :4.

"[Luke 11:4 quoted.] He who is unforgiving cuts off the very channel through
which alone he can receive mercy from God. We should not think that unless those
who have injured us confess the wrong we are justified in withholding from them our
forgiveness. It is their part, no doubt, to humble their hearts by repentance and con-
fession; but we are to have a spirit of compassion toward those who have trespassed
against us, whether or not they confess their faults. However sorely they may have

-31-
wounded us, we are not to cherish our grievances and sympathize with ourselves
over our injuries; but as we hope to be pardoned for our offenses against God we are
to pardon all who have done evil to us." -The Mount of Blessing, pp. 113, 114.

8. To what extent should we forgive those who have offended against us?
What must he do to be entitled to forgiveness? Luke 17:3,4.

" ...Nothing can justify an unforgiving spirit. He who is unmerciful toward

others shows that he himself is not a partaker of God's pardoning grace. In God's for-
giveness the heart of the erring one is drawn close to the great heart of Infinite Love.
The tide of divine compassion flows into the sinner's soul, and from him to the souls
of others. The tenderness and mercy that Christ has revealed in His own precious
life will be seen in those who become sharers of His grace...." -Christ's Object
Lessons, p. 251.

The Golden Rule D Thursday

May 31
9. When church order necessitates correction or discipline, what spirit must
control those who judge? Matthew 7: 12.

"In your association with others, put yourself in their place. Enter into their
feelings, their difficulties, their disappointments, their joys, and their sorrows. Iden-
tify yourself with them, and then do to them as, were you to exchange places with
them, you would wish them to deal with you....
"The golden rule is the principle of true courtesy, and its truest illustration is
seen in the life and character of Jesus. Oh, what rays of softness and beauty shone
forth in the daily life of our Saviour! What sweetness flowed from His very pres-
ence! The same spirit will be revealed in His children.... -The Mount of Blessing,
pp. 134, 135.

10. What example was set by Jesus and what did He do when reviled or made
to suffer? 1 Peter 2:21-23.

"Christ came to the earth, taking humanity and standing as man's representa-
tive, to show in the controversy with Satan that man, as God created him, con-
nected with the Father and the son, could obey every divine requirement." -
Selected Messages, book 1, p. 253.

Lesson 10 Sabbath, June 9, 1979

TWO KINGDOMS

Those born again spiritually enter the kingdom of God, but those belonging to
the kingdom of the world manifest outward power, and continue an open war-
fare against the spiritual kingdom

KEY TEXT: "I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that
thou shouldest keep them from the evil." John 17:15.

A Foreign Element Enter o Sunday

June 3
1. What simple parable illustrates the nature and destiny of the two king-
doms among men? What are the dominant characteristics of the subjects of
each? Matthew 13:36-39; Revelation 12:7-12.

"When Satan rebelled, there was war in heaven, and he, with all his sympathiz-
ers, was cast out....Satan became the avowed antagonist of Christ. On the earth he
planted the standard of rebellion, and round it his sympathizers rallied." -The
SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 973.

2. How was the first family on earth able to understand the principles of
salvation and the way in which righteousness could be attained?
Hebrews 11 :4.

"[Hebrews 11:4 quoted.] Abel grasped the great principles of redemption. He

saw himself a sinner, and he saw sin and its penalty, death, standing between his
soul and communion with God. He brought the slain victim, the sacrificed life, thus
acknowledging the claims of the law that had been transgressed. Through the shed
blood he looked to the future sacrifice, Christ dying on the cross of Calvary; and
trusting in the atonement that was there to be made, he had the witness that he was
righteous, and his offering accepted." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 72.

Two Heritages o Monday

June 4
3. Although both transgressed, what difference was between that of Adam
and that of Seth? What did each have by inheritance? Genesis 4:25, 26;
Luke 3:38 (last part).

" ...While Adam was created sinless, in the likeness of God, Seth, like Cain,
inherited the fallen nature of his parents. But he received also the knowledge of the
Redeemer and instruction in righteousness. By divine grace he served and honored
God; and he labored, as Abel would have done, had he lived, to turn the minds of
sinful men to revere and obey their Creator." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 80.

-33-
4. What is very much present in the kingdom of this world and will not be in
the Eden restored? What will predominate in the new earth? Revelation
20: 14; 21 :4; 15:3, 4.

"Pain cannot exist in the atmosphere of heaven. There will be no more tears, no
funeral trains, no badges of mourning." -The Great Controversy, p.676.
"There the redeemed shall know, even as also they are known. The loves and
sympathies which God Himself has planted in the soul shall there find truest and
sweetest exercise." -Ibid., p.677.

Inward and Outward D Tuesday

June 5
5. How did Jesus show impressively the difference between those of the
heavenly kingdom and those of the kingdoms ofthis world? Luke 17:20,21.

"But in heaven, service is not rendered in the spirit of legality. When Satan
rebelled against the law of Jehovah, the thought that there was a law came to the
angels almost as an awakening to something unthought of. In their ministry the
angels are not as servants, but as sons. There is perfect unity between them and
their Creator. Obedience is to them no drudgery. Love for God makes their service a
joy. So in every soul wherein Christ, the hope of glory, dwells, His words are re-
echoed, 'I delight to do Thy will, 0 My God: yea, Thy law is within My heart.'
Psalm 40:8." -The Mount of Blessing, p. 109.

6. What is the prominent characteristic of subjects of the kingdom of God?

How are the good deeds from the kingdom of earth regarded in the sight of
heaven? Job 29:14; Psalm 132:9; Isaiah 61:10; 64:6.

" ...Because it [the kingdom of heaven] is not attended by worldly pomp, you
are in danger of failing to discern the glory of My mission....
"Because of their selfishness and earthliness, even the disciples of Jesus could
not comprehend the spiritual glory which He sought to reveal unto them." -The
Desire of Ages, pp. 506, 507.

The Spirit of God Demonstrated D Wednesday

June 6
7. Why is it difficult for ordinary men to understand the spiritual kingdom?
What should those that explain the gospel always remember? 1 Corin-
thians 2:14-16; Hebrews 5:13, 14.

" ...Minds beclouded with evil cannot appreciate the value of the truth as it is
in Jesus. When iniquity is cherished, men do not feel the necessity of making dili-
gent effort, with prayer and reflection, to understand what they must know or lose
heaven...." -Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 188.
"Those who become co-workers with Jesus Christ, and who have spirituality to
discern spiritual things, will feel their need of virtue and of wisdom from Heaven in
handling His work." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 169.

-34-
8. When the righteousness of Christ controls how should it be known? How
does this open the eyes of the unspiritual? Galatians 5: 13, 14; 2 Corinth-
ians 2: 14, 15.

"By their good works, Christ's followers are to bring glory, not to themselves,
but to Him through whose grace and power they have wrought. It is through the
Holy Spirit that every good work is accomplished, and the Spirit is given to glorify,
not the receiver, but the giver...." -The Mount of Blessing, p.80.

Keep From The World o Thursday

June 7
9. What shows clearly the difference existing between those who accept Christ
as their Saviour and those who do not? What is the attitude of the world to
righteousness and holiness? John 15:18, 19, 21-24.

"A legal religion is insufficient to bring the soul into harmony with God. The
hard, rigid orthodoxy of the Pharisees, destitute of contrition, tenderness, or love,
was only a stumbling block to sinners. They were like the salt that had lost its savor;
for their influence had no power to preserve the world from corruption. The only true
faith is that which 'worketh by love' (Galatians 5:6) to purify the soul. It is as leaven
that transforms the character." -The Mount of Blessing, p. 53.

10. What was the burden of Christ for His disciples at the close of His min-
istry? For what did He pray particularly? John 17:6-8, 13-18.

"In Christian homes a bulwark should be built against temptation....

" ...But, parents, we can get a good way out of the world, if we choose to do so.
We can avoid seeing many of the evils that are multiplying so fast in these last days.
We can avoid hearing about much of the wickedness and crime that exist." -The
Adventist Home, p. 406.

Lesson 11 Sabbath, June 16, 1979

CHRIST OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS IN VERITY

The restoration of the Law of God and true Sabbath-keeping as the standard of
righteousness is to prepare and unite a people for the final judgement
KEY TEXT: "And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault
before the throne of God." Revelation 14:5.

Basic Truths Restored o Sunday

June 10
1. What is the eternal purpose of God? What relationship exists between the
threefold message of Revelation 14:6-12 and the righteousness of Christ?
Ephesians 3:9-12; Revelation 14:6.

"Several have written to me, inquiring if the message of justification by faith is

the third angel's message, and I have answered, 'It is the third angel's message in
verity.' " -Review and Herald, April 1, 1890.

2. What important doctrine was restored following the second Advent Move-
ment? What did these people become? Isaiah 56: 1, 2; 58: 12.

" ...The Lord has sent us messages for this time to establish Christianity upon
an eternal basis, and all who believe present truth must stand, not in their own wis-
dom, but in God; and raise up the foundation of many generations. These will be
registered in the books of heaven as repairers of the breach, the restorers of paths to
dwell in. We are to maintain the truth because it is truth, in the face of the bitterest
opposition.... " -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 4,
p.1152.

Unity of Faith o Monday

June 11
3. What gifts enable the sincere Advent believers to discern the special truths
for these times? 1 Corinthians 12:28.

"God is leading a people out from the world upon the exalted platform of eter-
nal truth, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. He will discipline and
fit up His people. They will not be at variance, one believing one thing and another
having faith and views entirely opposite, each moving independently of the body.
Through the diversity of the gifts and governments that He has placed in the
church, they will all come to the unity of the faith...." -Testimonies to Min-
isters, p. 29.

4. What would have been possible if the believers had in full faith accepted the
gift of the righteousness of Christ? Ephesians 4: 13.

" .. .It is the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, which Jesus said he would send into
the world, that changes our character into the image of Christ; and when this is

-36-
accomplished, we reflect, as in a mirror, the glory of the Lord. That is, the character
of the one who thus beholds Christ is so like his, that one looking at him sees Christ's
own character shining out as from a mirror. Imperceptibly to ourselves, we are
changed day by day from our own ways and will into the ways and will of Christ, into
the loveliness of his character. Thus we grow up into Christ, and unconsciously
reflect his image." -Review and Herald, April 28, 1891.

The Judgement 0Tuesday

June 12
5. What great scene was shown to the prophet Daniel and when did it begin?
How is the ministry of Christ associated with it? Daniel 7: 13, 14; I John 2: I;
Daniel 8: 14.

" ... [Daniel 7: 13, 14 quoted.] The coming of Christ here described is not His
second coming to the earth. He comes to the Ancient of Days in heaven to receive
dominion and glory and a kingdom, which will be given Him at the close of His work
as a mediator. It is this coming, and not His second advent to the earth, that was
foretold in prophecy to take place at the termination of the 2300 days in 1844.
Attended by heavenly angels, our great High Priest enters the holy of holies and
there appears in the presence of God to engage in the last acts of His ministration in
behalf of man-to perform the work of investigative judgment and to make an
atonement for all who are shown to be entitled to its benefits." -The Great Con-
troversy, p. 480.

6. If we have accepted Christ's imputed righteousness and lived by the power

of His imparted righteousness, how should we stand in this judgment?
Ecclesiastes 12:14; Matthew 12:36,37.

"All who have truly repented of sin, and by faith claimed the blood of Christ as
their atoning sacrifice, have had pardon entered against their names in the'books of
heaven; as they have become partakers of the righteousness of Christ, and their
characters are found to be in harmony with the law of God, their sins will be blotted
out, and they themselves will be accounted worthy of eternal life...." - The Great
Controversy, p. 483.
"Sins that have not been repented of and forsaken will not be pardoned and
blotted out of the books of record, but will stand to witness against the sinner in the
day of God. He may have committed his evil deeds in the light of day or in the dark-
ness of night; but they were open and manifest before Him with whom we have to
do. Angels of God witnessed each sin and registered it in the unerring records. Sin
may be concealed, denied, covered up from father, mother, wife, children, and
associates; no one but the guilty actors may cherish the last suspicion of the wrong;
but it is laid bare before the intelligences of heaven...." -Ibid., p.486.

The Blotting out of Sin 0

Wednesday
June 13
7. What is revealed of the condition and character of those who have been
sanctified during this sealing time? Revelation 14:1-5.

" ...The spotless robe of Christ's righteousness is placed upon the tried,
tempted, yet faithful children of God. The despised remnant are clothed in glorious
apparel, nevermore to be defiled by the corruptions of the world. Their names are

-37-
retained in the Lamb's book of life, enrolled among the faithful of all ages. They
have resisted the wiles of the deceiver; they have not been turned from their loyalty
by the dragon's roar...." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 475.

8. What wonderful transaction takes place during the judgment in the

heavenly sanctuary of the righteous dead and then the righteous living?
Acts 3:19.

"I saw that many were neglecting the preparation so needful and were looking
to the time of 'refreshing' and the 'latter rain' to fit them to stand in the day of the
Lord and to live in His sight. Oh, how many I saw in the time of trouble without a
shelter! They had neglected the needful preparation; therefore they could not
receive the refreshing that all must have to fit them to live in the sight of a holy
God...." -Early Writings, p. 71.

The Righteous Overcomers o Thursday

June 14
9. What solemn warning is given to guard God's people from the deceptions of
the papacy and the protestant churches? What responsibility rests on those
with this knowledge? Revelation 14:9-11; Ezekiel 33:2-4.

"The third angel's message is to be regarded as of the highest importance. It is a

life and death question. The impression made by this message will be proportionate
to the earnestness and solemnity with which it is proclaimed." -The SDA Bible
Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 980.

10. What is the only standard for the church that will be acceptable when
Christ comes? Exactly what kind of faith is mentioned? Revelation
14:12.

"God's denominated people-those who on this earth have witnessed to their

loyalty. Who are they? Those who have kept the commandments of God and the tes-
timony of Jesus Christ; those who have owned the Crucified One as their Saviour."
-The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 981.
" .. .It is not enough to believe about Christ; we must believe in Him. The only
faith that will benefit us is that which embraces Him as a personal Saviour; which
appropriates His merits to ourselves. Many hold faith as an opinion. Saving faith is
a transaction by which those who receive Christ join themselves in covenant rela-
tion with God. Genuine faith is life. A living faith means an increase of vigor, a con-
fiding trust, by which the soul becomes a conquering power." -The Desire of Ages,
p.347.

RIGHTEOUSNESS AND THE FOURTH ANGEL

The light and power of the fourth angel is to arouse a Laodicean people to
obtain the righteousness of Christ to be fitted to give the loud cry and be fitted
for the time of trouble
KEY TEXT: "But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech
thee, the voice of the Lord, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well
unto thee, and thy soul shall live." Jeremiah 38:20.

A Solemn Warning o Sunday

June 17
1. In what way does the fourth angel (Revelation 18) magnify the threefold
message of Revelation 14? Revelation 18: 1, 2.

"The Lord God of heaven will not send upon the world His judgments for dis-
obedience and transgression until He has sent His watchmen to give the warning. He
will not close up the period of probation until the message shall be more distinctly
proclaimed. The law of God is to be magnified; its claims must be presented in their
true, sacred character, that the people may be brought to decide for or against the
truth. Yet the work will be cut short in righteousness. The message of Christ's right-
eousness is to sound from one end of the earth to the other to prepare the way of the
Lord. This is the glory of God, which closes the work of the third angel." -Testi-
monies, vol. 6, p. 19.

2. What twofold work does this angel have to do? Who must be first warned
and what must then follow? Isaiah 58: 1, 2; Revelation 18:4.

" ... [Isaiah 58: 1 quoted.] The Lord says of these people: 'They seek Me daily,
and delight to know My ways, as a nation that did righteousness.' Here is a people
who are self-deceived, self-righteous, self-complacent; and the minister is com-
manded to cry aloud and show them their transgressions. In all ages this work has
been done for God's people, and it is needed now more than ever before." - Testi-
monies, vol. 5, p. 299.
"I saw angels hurrying to and fro in heaven, descending to the earth, and again
ascending to heaven, preparing for the fulfillment of some important event. Then I
saw another mighty angel commissioned to descend to the earth, to unite his voice
with the third angel, and give power and force to his message. Great power and glory
were imparted to the angel, and as he descended, the earth was lightened with his
glory. The light which attended this angel penetrated everywhere, as he cried
mightily, with a strong voice, 'Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become
the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean
and hateful bird.' The message ofthe fall of Babylon, as given by the second angel, is
repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which have been entering
the churches since 1844. The work of this angel comes in at the right time to join in
the last great work of the third angel's message as it swells to a loud cry. And the
people of God are thus prepared to stand in the hour of temptation, which they are
soon to meet. I saw a great light resting upon them, and they united to fearlessly pro-
claim the third angel's message." -Early Writings, p. 277.

A Preparatory Work o Monday
June 18
3. What are some of the things which this angel does?

a) Awakens the Laodicean from his lethargy and self-righteousness.

b) Restores the true understanding of the original principles of truth given to
the pioneers of the Third Angel's Message.
c) Quickens the consciences of the sincere believers with reference to his true
relationship with God.
d) Stimulates the zeal of the enlightened members to seek for the lost sheep.
e) Purifies and exalts the true character of God's remnant church.
f) Reemphasizes the importance of the gift of Christ's righteousness which is
manifested in obedience to the law of God.
g) Prepares the people of God for the latter rain and the loud cry.
h) By his light and power enables the everlasting gospel to penetrate every-
where.
i) Helps in the final gathering of the honest and sincere believers yet in Baby-
lon who will be sealed and numbered with the 144,000.

4. While this preparatory work continues, what must be done? What will
bring them into unity and give supernatural power for evangelism? Isaiah
60:2; 40:9, 10.

" .. .I know that a work must be done for the people, or many will not be
prepared to receive the light of the angel sent down from heaven to lighten the whole
earth with His glory. Do not think that you will be found as vessels unto honor in the
time of the latter rain, to receive the glory of God, if you are lifting up your souls
unto vanity, speaking perverse things, in secret cherishing roots of bitterness. The
frown of God will certainly be upon every soul who cherishes these roots of dissen-
sion, and possesses a spirit so unlike the Spirit of Christ." -Life Sketches, pp. 327,
328.
"God rebukes His people for their sins, that He may humble them, and lead
them to seek His face. As they reform, and His love revives in their hearts, His loving
answers will come to their requests. He will strengthen them in reformatory action,
lifting up for them a standard against the enemy. His rich blessing will rest upon
them, and in bright rays they will reflect the light of heaven. Then a multitude not
of their faith, seeing that God is with His people, will unite with them in serving the
Redeemer." -Review and Herald, February 25, 1902.
Failure of the Human Agent 0 Tuesday
June 19
5. When this angel began his work in 1888 with the revelation of the right-
eousness of Christ, how was it received by the leaders and later by the
people? Matthew 23: 13; Isaiah 9: 16; Ezekiel 33:31, 32.

"The perils of the last days are upon us. Satan takes the control of every mind
that is not decidedly under the control of the Spirit of God. Some have been culti-
vating hatred against the men whom God has commissioned to bear a special mes-
sage to the world. They began this satanic work at Minneapolis. Afterward, when
they saw and felt the demonstration of the Holy Spirit testifying that the message
was of God, they hated it the more, because it was a testimony against them...."
-Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 79, 80.

-40-
"The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people
through Elders Waggoner and Jones. This message was to bring more prominently
before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It
presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive
the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the com-
mandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus....This is the message that God
commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel's message, which is to be
proclaimed with a loud voice, and attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a
large measure." -Ibid., pp. 91, 92.

6. Due to the delay in finishing the work, what will the Lord do? Romans 9:28.
What is the reason for this delay?

" ...The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which lightens the whole earth
with his glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people, that know by
experience what it means to be laborers together with God. When we have entire,
whole-hearted consecration to the service of Christ, God will recognize the fact by an
outpouring of his Spirit without measure; but this will not be while the largest por-
tion of the church are not laborers together with God...." -Review and Herald,
July 21, 1896.

Dependent on God's Mercy o Wednesday

June 20
7. What two great spiritual elements blend under the reformatory power of
this angel? What is demanded by real conversion? Psalm 85: 10; Ezekiel
11 :19.

"A revival and a reformation must take place, under the ministration of the
Holy Spirit. Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival signifies a
renewal of spiritual life, a quickening of the powers' of mind and heart, a resur-
rection from spiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change in
ideas and theories, habits and practices. Reformation will not bring forth the good
fruit of righteousness unless it is connected with the revival of the Spirit. Revival
and reformation are to do their appointed work, and in doing this work they must
blend." -Review and Herald, February 25, 1902.
" ... Real conversion is a decided change of feelings and motives; it is a vir-
tual taking leave of worldly connections, a hastening from their spiritual atmo-
sphere, a withdrawing from the controlling power of their thoughts, opinions, and
influences. The separation causes pain and bitterness to both parties. It is the vari-
ance which Christ declares that He came to bring. But the converted will feel a con-
tinual longing desire that their friends shall forsake all for Christ, knowing that, un-
less they do, there will be a final and eternal separation. The true Christian cannot,
while with unbelieving friends, be light and trifling. The value of the souls for whom
Christ died is too great." -Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 82, 83.

8. What particular significance is there for our day in the striking of blood on
the doorposts and lintels just before the children of Israel left Egypt? Ex-
odus 12:21-23.

"Our present position is interesting and perilous. The danger of refusing light
from heaven should make us watchful unto prayer, lest we should any of us have an

-41-
evil heart of unbelief. Whim the Lamb of God was crucified on Calvary, the death
knell of Satan was sounded; and if the enemy of truth and righteousness can obliter-
ate from the mind the thought that it is necessary to depend upon the righteousness
of Christ for salvation, he will do it. If Satan can succeed in leading man to place
value upon his own works as works of merit and righteousness, he knows that he can
overcome him by his temptations, and make him his victim and prey. Lift up Jesus
before the people. Strike the doorposts with the blood of Calvary's Lamb, and you
are safe." -Review and Herald, September 3, 1889.

Danger of Neglecting Christ's Righteousness D Thursday

June 21
9. What danger arises when a church compares itself with others and neg-
lects to the specific conditions given in Scripture? 2 Corinthians 10: 12, 13;
Jeremiah 38: 20.

"The church cannot measure herself by the world nor by the opinion of men nor
by what she once was. Her faith and her position in the world as they now are must
be compared with what they would have been if her course had been continually
onward and upward. The church will be weighed in the balances of the sanctuary. If
her moral character and spiritual state do not correspond with the benefits and
blessings God has conferred upon her, she will be found wanting...." -Testi-
monies, vol. 5, p. 83.

10. How does the fourth angel provide for those who have a solid experi-
mental knowledge of the righteousness of Christ? Revelation 18:1-4.

"Thus the substance of the second angel's message is again given to the world
by that other angel who lightens the earth with his glory. These messages all blend
in one, to come before the people in the closing days of this earth's history. All the
world will be tested, and all that have been in the darkness of error in regard to the
Sabbath of the fourth commandment will understand the last message of mercy that
is to be given to men." -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 116.

Lesson 13 Sabbath, June 30, 1979

GOD'S CHURCH IN THE LAST DAYS

The Lord has made every provision through the impartation of His spirit and
righteousness that the remnant church will be perfect individually and collec-
tively

KEY TEXT: "That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having
spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and
without blemish." Ephesians 5:27.

True Righteous-A True People D Sunday

June 24

1. What name given in Scripture characterizes the true remnant church

recognized by God at the close of probation? Jeremiah 33:16.

" ...Of the church of Christ it is written, 'This is the name wherewith she shall
be called, The Lord our Righteousness.' Jeremiah 33:16. This name is put upon
every follower of Christ. It is the heritage of the child of God. The family are called
after the Father. The prophet Jeremiah, in the time of Israel's sore distress and
tribulation, prayed, 'we are called by Thy name; leave us not.' Jeremiah 14:9." -
The Mount of Blessing, pp. 106, 107.

2. What made it impossible for the Jewish nation to fulfill their divine trust
and carry the gospel of salvation to the world? Romans 10:3.

"While the law is holy, the Jews could not attain righteousness by their own ef-
forts to keep the law. The disciples of Christ must obtain righteousness of a dif-
ferent character from that of the Pharisees, if they would enter the kingdom of
heaven. God offered them, in His Son, the perfect righteousness of the law. If they
would open their hearts fully to receive Christ, then the very life of God, His love,
would dwell in them, transforming them into His own likeness; and thus through
God's free gift they would possess the righteousness which the law requires. But the
Pharisees rejected Christ; 'being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to
establish their own righteousness.' (Romans 10:3), they would not submit them-
selves unto the righteousness of God." -The Mount of Blessing, pp. 54, 55.

A Perfect Church D Monday

June 25
3. What special provision was made to perfect the church? What standard
must it reach? Ephesians 4:8-16.

" ...When the apostle Paul, through the revelation of Christ, was converted
from a persecutor to a Christian, he declared that he was as one born out of due
time. Henceforward Christ was all and in all to him. 'For me, to live is Christ,' he

-43-
declared. This is the most perfect interpretation in a few words, in all the Scrip-
tures, of what it means to be a Christian. This is the whole truth of the gospel. Paul
understood what many seem unable to comprehend. How intensely in earnest he
was! His words show that his mind was centered in Christ, that his whole life was
bound up with his Lord. Christ was the author, the support, and the source of his
life." -Review and Herald, October 19, 1897.

4. What divine plan will enable the church to attain to God's ideal? What is
the agency of purification? Ephesians 5:26, 27.

"Those only who through faith in Christ obey all of God's commandments will
reach the condition of sinlessness in which Adam lived before his transgression.
They testify to their love of Christ by obeying all His precepts." -The SDA Bible
Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1118.

Renewal of Ephesus Experience D Tuesday

June 26
5. What condition did the church reach in the period named after Ephesus?
What great blessings came on it at that time? Acts 2:47; 4:32, 33.

"At first the experience of the church at Ephesus was marked with childlike
simplicity and fervor. The believers sought earnestly to obey every word of God, and
their lives revealed an earnest, sincere love for Christ. They rejoiced to do the will of
God because the Saviour was in their hearts as an abiding presence. Filled with love
for their Redeemer, their highest aim was to win souls to Him ...." -Acts of the
Apostles, pp. 578, 579.

6. What is the great need of the remnant from the period named after Laodi-
cea? Why must the remnant feel a great need, individually and col-
lectively? Zechariah 4: 1-6.

"But no man can impart that which he himself has not received. In the work of
God, humanity can originate nothing. No man can by his own effort make himself a
light bearer for God. It was the golden oil emptied by the heavenly messengers into
the golden tubes, to be conducted from the golden bowl into the lamps of the sanctu-
ary, that produced a continuous bright and shining light. It is the love of God con-
tinually transferred to man that enables him to impart light. Into the hearts of all
who are united to God by faith the golden oil of love flows freely, to shine out again
in good works, in real, heartfelt service for God.
"In the great and measureless gift of the Holy Spirit are contained all of
heaven's resources. It is not because of any restriction on the part of God that the
riches of His grace do not flow earthward to men. If all were willing to receive, all
would become filled with His Spirit.
"It is the privilege of every soul to be a living channel through which God can
communicate to the world the treasures of His grace, the unsearchable riches of
Christ. There is nothing that Christ desires so much as agents who will represent to
the world His Spirit and character. There is nothing that the world needs so much as
the manifestation through humanity of the Saviour'slove. All heaven is waiting for
channels through which can be poured the holy oil to be a joy and blessing to human
hearts." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 418, 419.

-44-
Unity in Christ o Wednesday
June 27
7. What should the remnant always remember even if they are poor and few in
number? 1 Chronicles 29: 11, 12; Zephaniah 3: 12.

"Christ has made every provision that His church shall be a transformed body,
illumined with Light of the world, possessing the glory of Emmanuel. It is His pur-
pose that every Christian shall be surrounded with a spiritual atmosphere of light
and peace. He desires that we shall reveal His own joy in our lives." -Christ's Ob-
ject Lessons, p. 419.

8. What is the bond that unites believers with one another and the throne of
God? Revelation 3:20-22.

"Men are bound in fellowship, in dependence, to one another. By the golden

links of the chain of love they are to be bound fast to the throne of God. This can be
done only by Christ's imparting to finite man the attributes which man would ever
have possessed had he remained loyal and true to God.
"Those who, through an intelligent understanding of the Scriptures, view the
cross aright, those who truly believe in Jesus, have a sure foundation for their faith.
They have that faith which works by love and purifies the soul from all its hered-
itary and cultivated imperfections." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 238.

Dependence on Divine Grace o Thursday

June 28
9. As God's people are united in church capacity with Him through "the faith
once delivered to the saints," what will result? Isaiah 52:1, 7, 8.

"God has united believers in church capacity in order that one may strengthen
another in good and righteous endeavor. The church on earth would indeed be a
symbol of the church in heaven if the members were of one mind and of one faith. It
is those who are not moved by the Holy Spirit that mar God's plan. Another spirit
takes possession of them, and they help to strengthen the forces of darkness. Those
who are sanctified by the precious blood of Christ will not become the means of
counterworking the great plan which God has devised. They will not bring human
depravity into things small or great. They will do nothing to perpetuate division in
the church." -Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 238, 239. .

10. What security will the church have during the "time of trouble"? What
will be seen upon God's people when He comes? Isaiah 52:11, 12; Hebrews
2:14.

"The glory that shone on the face of Moses was a reflection of the righteousness
of Christ in the law." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments,
vol. 1, p. 1109.
" ... Because of their [Israelites 1trangressions, the people were unable to look
upon his face, and he wore a veil that he might not terrify them ....

-45-
"Had the Israelites discerned the gospel light that was opened to Moses, had
they been able by faith to look steadfastly to the end of that which was abolished,
they could have endured the light which was reflected from the countenance of
Moses...." -Ibid., p. 1110.
