FOREWORD
There are those who claim that doctrines are not important, and
that it does not matter what you believe, so long as you believe in Christ
and your life is right. "The position that it is of no consequence what
men believe is one of Satan's most successful deceptions" (The Great
Controversy, p. 520). The Bible teaches that no one can have Christ while
holding to false doctrines:
"Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of
Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath
both the Father and the Son" (2 John 9).
We have the assurance that the Father and the Son will be with
us, through the Holy Spirit, on condition that we love the Lord and
keep His words (that is, His doctrine). Read John 14:23,16-18. If we
accept Christ, submitting our hearts to the control of the Holy Spirit,
we will be guided "into all truth" (John 16:13). Only the truth is "sound
doctrine" (Titus 1:9; 2:1), and only sound doctrine is the "doctrine of
Christ." The Lord said, "My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me"
(John 7:16; italics supplied). Believing, teaching, and practicing the
doctrines of the Lord-this is what ensures His presence with us. And
this has a lot to do with our salvation. Paul wrote to the Corinthian be-
lievers: "I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, ...
by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto
you" (1 Corinthians 15:1, 2; italics supplied).
Not all gospels are true gospels, and not all doctrines are doctrines
of Christ. The Bible warns us against a perverted gospel (Galatians
1:6, 7), against "doctrines of men" (Colossians 2:22), and against
"doctrines of devils" (1 Timothy 4:1). The warning, "Be not carried
about with divers and strange doctrines" (Hebrews 13:9), means that
acceptance of error always involves rejection of truth (where "dam-
nable heresies" are adopted "the way of truth shall be evil spoken of," 2
Peter 2:1, 2), and that those who are guilty of such a dangerous
substitution must be considered as "false prophets" who are bringing
"destruction" upon themselves and upon those that follow them. (See
2 Peter 2:1; 2 Corinthians 4:3.) In these last days, when many souls
are being "tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of
doctrine" (Ephesians 4:14), this important admonition is brought home
to us: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"
(John 8:32).
May the guidance of God be with the teachers and students of our
Sabbath schools!

A CHAPEL IN
VALLE CEYLAN, MEXICO

The brethren of the Aztecan Mission Field have requested a

thirteenth Sabbath offering for the purchase of land and construc-
tion of a church in Valle Ceylan, Mexico.
For quite a long time, the house of a leading brother has been
used for the church gatherings. However, the number of be-
lievers has now grown to the point where his house is no longer
suitable for the ever increasing number. Therefore, the brethren
of Valle Ceylan have requested assistance for their church build-
ing project.
During the last conference held in Mexico, several brethren
from the General Conference went out with some of our Mexican
brethren to see several properties which might be suitable for
the proposed church building project in the Valle Ceylan area.
We must express gratitude for the goodwill and sacrifice of
our brother for permitting the church to use his house as a place
of worship for such a long time and for the inconvenience which
this might have caused him and his family. We believe that the
Lord has richly blessed him and his family for their sacrifice.
Now we call for a worldwide sacrifice from our believers
everywhere. All may share in this project by liberal and willing
donations through the thirteenth Sabbath offering designated
for this purpose. The brethren in Mexico have asked for your
help and support in their time of need.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOUND DOCTRINE

The knowledge of, and adherence to, doctrinal truth serves as a shield against
the delusions of the enemy.
KEY TEXT: Satan works "with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that
perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might
be saved" (2 Thessalonians 2:10).
True Doctrines V8. False Doctrines D Sunday
June 26
1. What is the Bible definition oftruth? Psalm 119:142; John 17:17. What does
the Spirit of Prophecy say about the consistency of the truth?

"All truth, whether in nature or in revelation, is consistent with itself in all its
manifestations." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 114.
"The truth for this time is broad in its outlines, far reaching, embracing many
doctrines; but these doctrines are not detached items, which mean little; they are
united by golden threads, forming a complete whole, with Christ as the living center.
The truths we present from the Bible are as firm and immovable as the throne of God."
-Selected Messages, book 2. p. 87.

2. What is often the source of false doctrines? Matthew 15:9. How are minds af-
fected by traditions?

"The traditions of men, like floating germs, attach themselves to the truth of God,
and men regard them as a part of the truth. Through false doctrines Satan gains a
foothold, and captivates the minds of men, causing them to hold theories that have no
foundation in truth. Men boldly teach for doctrines the commandments of men, and
as traditions pass on from age to age, they acquire a power over the human mind."- The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, pp. 1094, 1095.
"It is through false theories and traditions that Satan gains his power over the hu-
man mind. We can see the extent to which he exercises his power by the disloyalty that
is in the world. Even the churches that profess to be Christian have turned from the
law of Jehovah, and have erected a false standard. Satan has had his hand in all this."-
Evangelism, pp. 589, 590.

Prove All Things D Monday

June 27
3. What danger will surround the people of God, more and more, in these last
days? What duty is enjoined on us in connection with accepting new doc-
trines? 1 Thessalonians 5:21; 1 John 4:1. By what pattern should we prove
all doctrines? Isaiah 8:20.

"Our people need to understand the reasons of our faith and our past experiences.
How sad it is that so many of them apparently place unlimited confidence in men who

-5-
present theories tending to uproot our past experiences and to remove the old land-
marks! ...
"Every conceivable fanciful and deceptive doctrine will be presented by men who
think that they have the truth." -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 25.
4. What means and gifts have been placed in the church and for what purpose?
Ephesians 4:11-14. How can we distinguish between the word of God and
the word of man? John 7:17. Why is it so important to have a deep
knowledge of the Holy Scriptures?

"The time has come when we cannot depend upon the doctrine which comes to
our ears, unless we see that it harmonizes with the Word of God. There are
dangerous heresies that will be presented as Bible doctrines; and we are to become
acquainted with the Bible so that we may know how to meet them. The faith of every
individual will be tested, and everyone will pass through a trial of close criticism."-
Evangelism, pp. 590, 591.

Inexcusable Attitude D Tuesday

June 28
5. What attitude have lovers of sin always taken toward the truth? What
substitute do they try to find? 2 Timothy 4:3, 4; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-11.

"Those who are unwilling to accept the plain, cutting truths of the Bible are con-
tinually seeking for pleasing fables that will quiet the conscience." - The Great Controversy,
p.523.
"We think of the words of the apostle, They shall 'heap to themselves teachers
having itching ears.' As soon as the truth is brought to the place the ministers of the
different churches become alarmed and send at once for ministers to come in and
commence revival meetings. Here they are called conferences. These meetings will
continue for weeks, and no less than ten ministers will be on hand; the very best talent
will be enlisted, and warnings and threatenings will be poured out from the churches
against the seventh-day people." -Evangelism, p. 410.
6. Why do many reject the plain truths of the Bible? John 3:19-21. What do
they forfeit? What neglect is tantamount to rejecting the truth?

"Those who have an opportunity to hear the truth, and yet take no pains to hear
or understand it, thinking that if they do not hear, they will not be accountable, will be
judged guilty before God the same as if they had heard and rejected. There will be no
excuse for those who choose to go in error when they might understand what is
truth."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1145.
"Let us consider our condition before God; let us heed the counsel of the True
Witness. Let none of us be filled with prejudice, as were the Jews, that light may not
come into our hearts. Let it not be necessary for Christ to say of us as He did of them,
'Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life' (John 5:40)."-SelectedMessages, book 1, p.
358.

Power in the Truth D Wednesday

June 29
7. What do we know about the power of the gospel? Romans 1:16.

"Wherever the word of God has been faithfully preached, results have followed
that attested its divine origin. The Spirit of God accompanied the message of His ser-
vants, and the word was with power. Sinners felt their consciences quickened....

-6-
"These souls brought forth fruit meet for repentance. They believed and were
baptized, and rose to walk in newness of life-new creatures in Christ Jesus; not to
fashion themselves according to the former lusts, but by the faith of the Son of God to
follow in His steps, to reflect His character, and to purify themselves even as He is
pure. The things they once hated they now loved, and the things they once loved they
hated. The proud and self-assertive became meek and lowly of heart. The vain and
supercilious became serious and unobtrusive. The profane became reverent, the
drunken sober, and the profligate pure. The vain fashions of the world were laid
aside."- The Great Controversy, pp. 461, 462.

8. What promise was given to the disciples for the success of the gospel work?
Luke 24:49; John 14:16,26.

"The Saviour knew no argument, however logical, would melt hard hearts or
break through the crust of worldliness and selfishness. He knew that His disciples
must receive the heavenly endowment."- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 31.

Test of Discipleship o Thursday

June 30

9. Under what condition can we become true disciples of Jesus? John 8:31,32.

"Those who preach the word of the Lord must live that which they teach. If we
receive the grace of God in the heart, we must reveal to others this grace in every
word and act. Those who dwell upon the long-sufferance and mercy of Christ must
practice His patience and forbearance, and never reveal a spirit of high-handed in-
justice toward their brethren." -Medical Ministry, p. 255.

10. What privilege will be granted to those who have kept the truth? Isaiah 26:2.
Why is obedience to the commandments of God so important in the light of
the judgment?

"The only question asked in the judgment will be, 'Have they been obedient to
My commandments?' "-Gospel Workers. p. 315.
"Jesus raised His mighty, glorious arm, laid hold of the pearly gate, swung it back
on its glittering hinges, and said to us: 'You have washed your robes in My blood,
stood stiffly for My truth, enter in.' We all marched in and felt we had a perfect right
there." - Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 61.

Recapitulation o Friday
July 1

a. How does Satan gain control over human minds and professed Christian
churches?
b. Why is it essential for us, at this time, to understand the reasons of our faith?
c. If we neglect the opportunity to hear and understand the truth, how shall we
be accounted in the judgment?
d. Describe the fruits of genuine repentance and conversion wrought by the
gospel.
e. If the truth has made us free, and we have the grace of God in our hearts, how
shall we reveal it to others? •

Lesson 2 Sabbath, July 9,1983

THE PRESENT TRUTH

In every age there has been a present truth applicable especially to the time in
which it was preached. So, today, God has revealed to us the present truth which
is necessary particularly for our time.

KEY TEXT: "Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance
of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the pres-
ent truth" (2 Peter 1:12).

A Truth for Every Age D Sunday

July 3

1. As God did not reveal the whole truth to His children from the beginning,
what plan has He followed in His dealings with His people? Romans 16:25,
26; John 16:12.

"Different periods in the history of the church have each been marked by the
development of some special truth, adapted to the necessities of God's people at that
time. Every new truth has made its way against hatred and opposition; those who
were blessed with its light were tempted and tried. The Lord gives a special truth for
the people in an emergency. Who dare refuse to publish it?"- The Great Controversy, p. 609.

2. What did Peter call the truth that was especially important in his days? 2
Peter 1:12. What is the most important truth for our time?

"There are many precious truths contained in the Word of God, but it is 'present
truth' that the flock needs now. I have seen the danger of the messengers running off
from the important points of present truth, to dwell upon subjects that are not calcu-
lated to unite the flock and sanctify the soul. Satan will here take every possible advan-
tage to injure the cause." -Early Writings, p. 63.

Importance of the Truth D Monday

July 4

3. How much should we value the truth that God has revealed to us? Proverbs
23:23.

"Our salvation depends upon our knowledge of God's will as it is contained in His
word. Never cease asking and searching for Truth. You need to know your duty. You
need to know what you must do to be saved. And it is God's will that you shall know
what He has said to you. But you must exercise faith. As you search the Scriptures,
you must believe that God is, and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.

-8-
"0 search the Bible with a heart hungry for spiritual food! Dig into the word as a
miner digs into the earth to find the veins of gold. Do not give up your search till you
have learned your relation to God and His will concerning you." -Messages to Young People,
pp. 260, 261.

4. How powerful is the conviction of truth among the true followers of Christ? 2
Corinthians 13:8.

"He who has a knowledge of God and His word through personal experience has
a settled faith in the divinity of the Holy Scriptures. He has proved that God's word is
truth, and he knows that truth can never contradict itself."- The Ministry ofHealing. p. 462.
God's Truth Revealed D Tuesday
July 5
5. How does the knowledge of God's truth come to us? Amos 3:7; Matthew
11:25.

"The whole Bible is a revelation; for all revelation to men comes through Christ,
and all centers in Him. God has spoken unto us by His Son, whose we are by creation
and by redemption." -The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7. p. 953.

6. How do many remain blind to the truth? 2 Corinthians 4:3, 4.

"As we near the close of this world's history, the prophecies relating to the last
days especially demand our study. The last book of the New Testament scriptures is
full of truth that we need to understand. Satan has blinded the minds of many, so that
they have been glad of any excuse for not making the Revelation their study. "-Christ's
Object Lessons, p. 133.

The Truth for Today D Wednesday

July 6
7. Which is one of the most outstanding truths shining from God's word? Isaiah
56:2. Why was this truth not a test for past generations?

"Special truths have been adapted to the conditions of the generations as they
have existed. The present truth, which is a test to the people of this generation, was
not a test to the people of generations far back. If the light which now shines upon us
in regard to the Sabbath of the fourth commandment had been given to the genera-
tions in the past, God would have held them accountable for that light."- Testimonies. vol.
2, p. 693.
"Since Jesus has opened the door into the most holy place, which contains the ark,
the commandments have been shining out to God's people, and they are being tested
on the Sabbath question." -Early Writings, p. 42.

8. What constitutes the last part of the "everlasting gospel" to be proclaimed

to the world in our days? Revelation 14:6-12.

"The time has come, the important time, when, through God's messengers, the
scroll is being unrolled to the world. The truth comprised in the first, second, and
third angels' messages must go to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people; it must
lighten the darkness of every continent and extend to the islands of the sea." -Evange-
lism, p. 19.

-9-
"Christ is coming the second time, with power unto salvation. To prepare human
beings for this event, He has sent the first, second, and third angels' messages. These
angels represent those who receive the truth, and with power open the gospel to the
world."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, pp. 978, 979.

Obeying the Truth o Thursday

July 7

9. What will the truth do for us if we obey it wholeheartedly? 1 Peter 1:22. How
has this work been neglected?

"I am alarmed for the people of God who profess to believe solemn, important
truth, for I know that many of them are not converted nor sanctified through it. Men
can hear and acknowledge the whole truth, and yet know nothing of the power of
godliness. All who preach the truth will not themselves be saved by it."- Testimonies, vol.
1, p. 262.
"We need a thorough reformation in all our churches. The converting power of
God must come into the church. Seek the Lord most earnestly, put away your sins,
and tarry in Jerusalem till ye be endowed with power from on high. Let God set you
apart to the work. Purify your souls by obeying the truth." - Testimonies to Ministers. p. 443.

10. How can we be fitted for translation? Acts 3:19; Revelation 3:18; Daniel
12:10. What will happen to those who do not strive for perfection of
character?

"If any will not be purified through obeying the truth, and overcome their
selfishness, their pride, and evil passions, the angels of God have the charge: 'They
are joined to their idols, let them alone,' and they pass on to their work, leaving these
with their sinful traits unsubdued, to the control of evil angels. Those who come up to
every point, and stand every test, and overcome, be the price what it may, have heed·
ed the counsel of the True Witness, and they will receive the latter rain, and thus be
fitted for translation."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 187.

Recapitulation o Friday
July 8

a. What is meant by "present truth"? What is the difference between the

general truths contained in the Bible and "present truth"?
b. How earnestly should we search the Holy Scriptures?
c. What subject, especially, demands our study as we near the end of time?
d. Whom do the three angels of Revelation 14 represent?
e. Why is it that many who preach the truth will not be saved by it? •

THE SANCTUARY

The correct understanding of the sanctuary service and of the ministration of

Jesus in the most holy place in heaven is the foundation of our faith.
KEY TEXT: "And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in
his temple the ark of his testament" (Revelation 11:19).
God's Dwelling Place With Men o Sunday
July 10
1. What provision was to ensure a dwelling place for God among His people on
earth? Exodus 25:8.

"Henceforth the people were to be honored with the abiding presence of their
King. 'I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God,' 'and the taber-
nacle shall be sanctified by My glory' (Exodus 29:45, 43), was the assurance given to
Moses. As the symbol of God's authority and the embodiment of His will, there was
delivered to Moses a copy of the Decalogue engraved by the finger of God Himself
upon two tables of stone (Deuteronomy 9:10; Exodus 32:15, 16), to be sacredly en-
shrined in the sanctuary, which, when made, was to be the visible center of the na-
tion's worship." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 314.
2. Name the successive sanctuaries erected in Israel.

a) The tabernacle set up in the wilderness (Exodus 40: 17) and later established in
Shiloh (Judges 18:31)
b) The temple of Solomon (1 Kings 6:1) in Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 6:10)
c) The temple of Zerubbabel (Zechariah 4:9)
d) The temple of Herod (John 2:20)
The Sanctuary Service 0 Monday
July 11
3. Describe the two compartments of the sanctuary. Exodus 40:21-26;
Hebrews 9:2-5. What was the main function of the priests officiating in the
sanctuary? Leviticus 4:20 (second part).

"In the first apartment, or holy place, were the table of showbread, the candle-
stick, or lampstand, and the altar of incense....
"Beyond the inner veil was the holy of holies, where centered the symbolic ser-
vice of atonement and intercession, and which formed the connecting link between
heaven and earth. In this apartment was the ark. ... It was made as a depository for
the tables of stone, upon which God Himself had inscribed the Ten Commandments.
Hence it was called the ark of God's testament, or the ark of the covenant, since the
Ten Commandments were the basis of the covenant made between God and Israel."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 348.

-11-
4. Give a brief description of: (a) the daily service (Hebrews 9:6; Leviticus 4:2, 3,
6, 13, 14, 17), (b) the yearly service (Hebrews 9:7; Leviticus 16:6-8, 15-22).

"The ministration of the earthly sanctuary consisted of two divisions; the priests
ministered daily in the holy place, while once a year the high priest performed a
special work of atonement in the most holy, for the cleansing of the sanctuary. Day by
day the repentant sinner brought his offering to the door of the tabernacle and, placing
his hand upon the victim's head, confessed his sins, thus in figure transferring them
from himself to the innocent sacrifice.... By this ceremony the sin was, through the
blood, transferred in figure to the sanctuary. "-The Great Controversy, p. 418.
"Once a year, on the great Day of Atonement, the priest entered the most holy
place for the cleansing of the sanctuary. The work there performed completed the
yearly round of ministration. On the Day of Atonement two kids of the goats were
brought to the door of the tabernacle, and lots were cast upon them, 'one lot for the
Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat' (Lev. 16:8). The goat upon which fell the lot
for the Lord was to be slain as a sin offering for the people. And the priest was to bring
his blood within the veil and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat.
The blood was also to be sprinkled upon the altar of incense that was before the veiL"
-Ibid., p. 419.

The Heavenly Sanctuary D Tuesday

July 12
5. What parallel can be drawn between the two covenants? Hebrews 9: 1. Ex-
plain the similarity between the earthly sanctuary and the heavenly sanc-
tuary. Exodus 25:40; Hebrews 8:5.

"The tabernacle, or temple, of God on earth was a pattern of the original in

heaven. All the ceremonies of the Jewish law were prophetic, typical of mysteries in
the plan of redemption."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1095.
"And what was done in type in the ministration of the earthly sanctuary is done in
reality in the ministration of the heavenly sanctuary."- The Great Controversy, p. 420.
6. When and how was the way opened into the heavenly sanctuary? Hebrews
9:8-12.

"Type has met antitype in the death of God's Son. The great sacrifice has been
made. The way into the holiest is laid open. A new and living way is prepared for all.
No longer need sinful, sorrowing humanity await the coming of the high priest.
Henceforth the Saviour was to officiate as priest and advocate in the heaven of
heavens."- The Desire of Ages, p. 757.
Christ Our High Priest D Wednesday
July 13
7. Where did Christ begin His ministry when He was able to offer His own blood?
Hebrews 8:1-6; Revelation 4:2, 4, 5.

"For eighteen centuries this work of ministration continued in the first apartment
of the sanctuary. The blood of Christ, pleaded in behalf of penitent believers, secured
their pardon and acceptance with the Father, yet their sins still remained upon the
books of record."- The Great Controversy, p. 421.
8. State the twofold purification by blood: (a) under the old covenant (Leviticus
16:16,17); (b) under the new covenant (Hebrews 9:13,14; Revelation 7:14,
last part; Hebrews 9:23).

-12 -
"As anciently the sins of the people were by faith placed upon the sin offering and
through its blood transferred, in figure, to the earthly sanctuary, so in the new cove-
nant the sins of the repentant are by faith placed upon Christ and transferred, in fact,
to the heavenly sanctuary. And as the typical cleansing of the earthly was accomplish-
ed by the removal of the sins by which it had been polluted, so the actual cleansing of
the heavenly is to be accomplished by the removal, or blotting out, of the sins which
are there recorded. But before this can be accomplished, there must be an examina-
tion of the books of record to determine who, through repentance of sin and faith in
Christ, are entitled to the benefits of His atonement. The cleansing of the sanctuary
therefore involves a work of investigation-a work of judgment."- The Great Controversy,
pp. 421, 422.

The Judgment D Thursday

July 14
9. Which apartment of the sanctuary in heaven was opened when the nations
began to be angry? Revelation 11:18, 19. For what purpose was it opened?
Daniel 7:7-10, 13; 8:14; Matthew 22:11.

"In the ministration of the earthly tabernacle, which served 'unto the example
and shadow of heavenly things,' this apartment was opened only upon the great Day
of Atonement for the cleansing of the sanctuary. Therefore the announcement that
the temple of God was opened in heaven and the ark of His testament was seen points
to the opening of the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary in 1844 as Christ en-
tered there to perform the clos'ing work of the atonement."- The Great Cont1'Oversy, p. 433.
"As in the typical service there was a work of atonement at the close of the year,
so before Christ's work for the redemption of men is completed there is a work of
atonement for the removal of sin from the sanctuary. This is the service which began
when the 2300 days ended." -Ibid., p. 421.
10. What should every true believer be doing while our High Priest is performing
the final work of atonement? Isaiah 22:12; Joel 2:12, 13, 15-17.

"Weare now living in the great day of atonement. In the typical service, while the
high priest was making the atonement for Israel, all were required to afflict their
souls by repentance of sin and humiliation before the Lord, lest they be cut off from
among the people. In like manner, all who would have their names retained in the
book of life should now, in the few remaining days of their probation, afflict their
souls before God by sorrow for sin and true repentance. There must be deep, faithful
searching of heart." - The Great Controversy, pp. 489, 490.
Recapitulation D Friday
July 15
a. What and where was the visible center of worship in Israel?
b. Describe: (1) the two compartments of the sanctuary; (2) the daily service
and the yearly service.
c. How can you prove, by the Bible, that the earthly sanctuary was a copy of the
sanctuary in heaven?
d. How are sins transferred to the heavenly sanctuary? How is the heavenly
sanctuary to be cleansed?
e. What is indicated by the announcement that the second apartment of the
temple of God in heaven was opened? •

THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD

In the work of restoration predicted for these last days, prophecy draws our at-
tention, especially, to the downtrodden law of God.

KEY TEXT: "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the com-
mandments of God, and the faith of Jesus" (Revelation 14:12).

The Law of God in Heaven o Sunday

July 17

1. What was the testimony that was placed in the ark, in the tabernacle? Ex-
odus 31:18; 40:20. As we look from the earthly copy to the original in
heaven (Hebrews 8:1-5), where do we see God's testimony under the new
covenant? Revelation 15:5.

2. What does the ark of the covenant contain as indicated by its name? Exodus
34:28 (second part); 2 Chronicles 6:11. Since the sanctuary in heaven was
opened to our understanding, where are we able to see the holy law of God?
What does the psalmist say with reference to the Ten Commandments (see
Deuteronomy 5:5, 6) in the heavenly sanctuary? Psalm 119:89.

"In the Revelation, John says, 'The temple of God was opened in heaven, and
there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament.' Rev. 11:19. John saw in vision
the Lord's people looking for His coming and searching for truth. As the temple of
God was opened unto His people, the light of the law of God, which was in the ark,
shone forth. Those who receive this light are brought to view in the proclamation of
the third angel's message."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1152.

God's Holy Character o Monday

July 18

3. How do we know that the law of God is a transcript of His character? Give
three points of identity.

a) the truth: Deuteronomy 32:4; John 14:6; Psalm 119:142, 151

b) perfection: Matthew 5:48; Psalm 19:7
c) immutability: James 1:17; Deuteronomy 4:2; Luke 16:17

"The character of God is expressed in His law; and in order for you to be in har-
mony with God, the principles of His law must be the spring of your every action."-
Christ's Object Lessons, p. 391.

-14 -
4. Where is the will of God revealed? Psalm 40:8; Romans 2: 18. On what condi-
tion can we enter into the kingdom of heaven? Matthew 7:21.

"God has set forth in His word the conditions upon which every soul will be
elected to eternal life-obedience to His commandments, through faith in Christ. God
has elected a character in harmony with His law, and anyone who shall reach the stan-
dard of His requirement will have an entrance into the kingdom of glory."-Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 207.

Sin: Transgression of the Law o Tuesday

July 19

5. Which is the only moral code that clearly defines and specifies sin? 1 John
3:4; Romans 3:20 (last part); James 2:10-12.

"The law reveals sin to us, and causes us to feel our need of Christ, and to flee unto
Him for pardon and peace by exercising repentance toward God and faith toward our
Lord Jesus Christ."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1110.

6. In the plan of salvation, what is to be destroyed? Hebrews 9:26 (second part);

1 John 3:8 (second part). And what is to be established? Isaiah 42:21; Mat-
thew 5:17-20; Romans 3:31.

"In the precepts of His holy law, God has given a perfect rule of life; and He has
declared that until the close of time this law, unchanged in a single jot or tittle, is to
maintain its claim upon human beings. Christ came to magnify the law and make it
honorable. He showed that it is based upon the broad foundation of love to God and
love to man, and that obedience to its precepts comprises the whole duty of man. In
His own life He gave an example of obedience to the law of God. In the Sermon on the
Mount He showed how its requirements extend beyond the outward acts and take
cognizance of the thoughts and intents of the heart." - The Acts 0/ the Apostles, p. 505.

Under the New Covenant o Wednesday

July 20

7. If we are saved, from what are we actually saved? Matthew 1:21; John 5:14;
Hebrews 10:26.

"Jesus died, not to save man in his sins, but/rom his sins. Man is to leave the er-
ror of his ways, to follow the example of Christ, to take up his cross and follow Him,
denying self, and obeying God at any cost."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 251.

8. When we are saved from sin, where does the Lord write His law? Jeremiah
31:31-33 (Hebrews 8:10). What does the apostle call the law of God written
in our hearts? 2 Corinthians 3:3. What evidence will show that we have been
saved by grace? Ephesians 2:8-10; Hebrews 5:9.

"The law is an expression of God's idea. When we receive it in Christ, it becomes

our idea. It lifts us above the power of natural desires and tendencies, above tempta-
tions that lead to sin." -The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 6, p. 1110.

-15 -
A, Work ofRestoration o Thursday
July 21

9. Which of the laws given through Moses is to be restored in these last days?
Compare Deuteronomy 5:1-7 with Malachi 4:5.

"In this time of well-nigh universal apostasy, God calls upon His messengers to
proclaim His law in the spirit and power of Elias. As John the Baptist, in preparing a
people for Christ's first advent, called their attention to the Ten Commandments, so
we are to give, with no uncertain sound, the message: 'Fear God, and give glory to
him; for the hour of his judgment is come.' With the earnestness that characterized
Elijah the prophet and John the Baptist, we are to strive to prepare the way for
Christ's second advent."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1184.

10. What is the result of the last message of warning (Revelation 14:6-10) to be
given to the world? Revelation 14:12.

"A banner has been placed in our hands, upon which is inscribed, 'Here is the pa-
tience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith
of Jesus.' This is a distinct, separating message,-a message that is to give no uncer-
tain sound. It is to lead the people away from the broken cisterns that contain no
water, to the fountain of living waters." -Counsels to Writers and Editors, pp. 102, 103.

a. When the temple of God in heaven was opened, what light began to shine
forth upon the true believers?
b. Where is the character and will of God expressed?
c. How do you prove that Christ came into the world to: (a) destroy sin, and (b)
to establish the law of God?
d. If we are willing to follow Christ's command, "Go and sin no more," how will
our life relate with the law of God?
e. What stand will be taken toward the law of God by those who are preparing
the way for the Lord's second coming? •

THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS

Bible prophecy makes it plain that the gift of prophecy would be restored to the
last generation of true Christians.

KEY TEXT: "The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy" (Revelation 19:10).

The Gift ofProphecy in the True Church o Sunday

July 24

1. How would Christ bless the church with His presence? John 14:16. Which is
one of the most important gifts of the Spirit? 1 Corinthians 14:1. What is to
be accomplished by the help of this gift? Ephesians 4:11, 12.

"In harmony with the wordof God, His Spirit was to continue its work through-
out the period of the gospel dispensation. During the ages while the Scriptures of both
the Old and the New Testament were being given, the Holy Spirit did not cease to
communicate light to individual minds, apart from the revelations to be embodied in
the Sacred Canon. The Bible itself relates how, through the Holy Spirit, men received
warning, reproof, counsel, and instruction, in matters in no way relating to the giving
of the Scriptures. And mention is made of the prophets in different ages, of whose ut-
terances nothing is recorded. In like manner, after the close of the canon of the Scrip-
ture, the Holy Spirit was still to continue its work, to enlighten, warn, and comfort the
children of God."- The Great Controversy, p. 10.

2. How did Hosea illustrate the imparting of truth through the gift of prophecy?
Hosea 6:3-5. In what words does Paul refer to this gift in Ephesians 1:17?

"In all ages God has given human beings divine revelations, that thus He may
fulfill His purpose of unfolding gradually to the mind the doctrines of grace. His man-
ner of imparting the truth is illustrated by the words, 'His going forth is prepared as
the morning.' He who places himself where God can enlighten him, advances, as it
were, from the partial obscurity of dawn to the full radiance of noonday."-Sons and
Daughters of God, p. 335.

The Gift ofProphecy in the Last Days o Monday

July 25

3. How can we prove that the gift known as "the testimony of Jesus Christ"
would be present with the last generation of true Christians? 1 Corinthians
1:6,7; Revelation 12:17 (second part).

"God is continually working for us that we may come behind in no gift.... Jesus
has pointed out the way of life, He has made manifest the light of truth, He has given

-17 -
the Holy Spirit, and endowed us richly with everything essential to our perfec-
tion." -Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 218.
"The word of the Lord comes to us all who have not resisted His Spirit by deter-
mining not to hear and obey. This voice is heard in warnings, in counsels, in reproof.
It is the Lord's message of light to His people. If we wait for louder calls or better op-
portunities, the light may be withdrawn, and we left in darkness."-Testimonies, vol. 5. p.
69.

4. What is the testimony of Jesus Christ that is to be restored in these last days?
Revelation 19:10 (last part).

"We must love and obey the truth for this time. This will save us from accepting
strong delusions. God has spoken to us through His word. He has spoken to us
through the testimonies to the church, and through the books that have helped to
make plain our present duty and the position we should now occupy. The warnings
that have been given, line upon line, precept upon precept, should be heeded. If we
disregard them, what excuse can we offer?"-Gospel Workers, p. 308.

The Gift ofProphecy in the Last Days (continued) o Tuesday

July 26

5. What prophecy is to have a special application shortly before the second

coming of the Lord? Joel 2:28; Acts 2:16, 17.

"In immediate connection with the scenes of the great day of God, the Lord by
the prophet Joel has promised a special manifestation of His Spirit. Joel 2:28. This
prophecy received a partial fulfillment in the outpouring of the Spirit on the Day of
Pentecost; but it will reach its fun accomplishment in the manifestation of divine grace
which will attend the closing work of the gospel." -The Great Controversy, p. 11.

6. Addressing the last generation of Christians (1 Thessalonians 5:4), what ex-

hortation does Paul make concerning the gift of prophecy? 1 Thessalonians
5:20. Why is this gift so necessary in our days?

"The Lord designs to warn you, to reprove, to counsel, through the testimonies
given, and to impress your minds with the importance of the truth of His word. The
written testimonies are not to give new light, but to impress vividly upon the heart the
truths of inspiration already revealed. Man's duty to God and to his fellow man has
been distinctly specified in God's word, yet but few of you are obedient to the light
given. Additional truth is not brought out; but God has through the Testimonies sim-
plified the great truths already given and in His own chosen way brought them before
the people to awaken and impress the mind with them, that all may be left without ex-
cuse."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 605.

The Purpose of the Gift o Wednesday

July 27

7. For what purpose did the Lord restore the gift of prophecy in our days? 1
Corinthians 1:7,8; 1 Thessalonians 5:20, 23.

"The Spirit of the Lord will be in the instruction, and doubts existing in many
minds will be swept away. The testimonies themselves will be the key that will ex-
plain the messages given, as scripture is explained by scripture. Many will read with

-18 -
eagerness the messages reproving wrong, that they may learn what they may do to be
saved.... Light will dawn upon the understanding, and the Spirit will make an im-
pression on minds, as Bible truth is clearly and simply presented in the messages that
since 1846 God has been sending His people. These messages are to find their place
in hearts, and transformations will take place." -Selected Messages, book I, p. 42.

8. What will finally be the moral and spiritual condition of the remnant church
that is to be benefited by the Spirit of Prophecy? Ephesians 5:26, 27.

"Those only who through faith in Christ obey all of God's commandments will
reach the condition of sinlessness in which Adam lived before his transgression. They
testify to their love of Christ by obeying all His precepts."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments). vol. 6. p. 1118.

The Fullness of the Spirit o Thursday

July 28

9. What fullness did the early disciples have? John 1:16. Give examples: Luke
1:15; Acts 4:8; 6:5 (first part).

10. What fullness will the true believers have for the finishing of the work? Ephe-
sians 3:19 (second part); 5:18 (second part). What gifts are associated with
the fullness of the Spirit? 1 Corinthians 12:7-11.

"Not until through faith and prayer the disciples had surrendered themselves ful-
ly for His working was the outpouring of the Spirit received. Then in a special sense
the goods of heaven were committed to the followers of Christ. 'When He ascended
up on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.' Eph. 4:8, 7. 'Unto
everyone of us is given grace, according to the measure of the gift of Christ,' the
Spirit 'dividing to every man severally as He will.' 1 Cor. 12:11. The gifts are already
ours in Christ, but their actual possession depends upon our reception of the Spirit of
God." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 327.

Recapitulation o Friday
July 29

a. What work has the Spirit of God been doing besides giving revelations to be
embodied in the Sacred Canon?
b. How does the Lord send us warnings, counsels, and reproof apart from the
Bible?
c. The Bible contains all the light we need for our salvation. Why, then, does the
Lord still send us testimonies through the Spirit of Prophecy?
d. What will take place if we heed the messages that God has sent to us through
the Spirit of Prophecy?
e. When the Holy Spirit is present in His fullness, through what gifts does He
operate? •

Lesson 6 Sabbath, August 6, 1983

THE THREE ANGELS' MESSAGES

The threefold message is the last part of the everlasting gospel to be proclaimed
to all the world before the end.

KEY TEXT: "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for
a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come" (Matthew
24:14).
The Everlasting Gospel D Sunday
July 31
1. What work was assigned to the disciples? Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8; Colossians
1:23.

"Thus Christ gave His disciples their commission. He made full provision for the
prosecution of the work, and took upon Himself the responsibility for its success. So
long as they obeyed His word, and worked in connection with Him, they could not fail.
Go to all nations, He bade them. Go to the farthest part of the habitable globe, but
know that My presence will be there. Labor in faith and confidence, for the time will
never come when I will forsake you."- The Desire of Ages, p. 822.
2. What work is to be carried out in our days? Revelation 14:6; Matthew 24:14.

"To prepare a people to stand in the day of God, a great work of reform was to be
accomplished. God saw that many of His professed people were not building for eter-
nity, and in His mercy He was about to send a message of warning to arouse them
from their stupor and lead them to make ready for the coming of the Lord."- The Great
Controversy, p. 311.

The First Angel's Message D Monday

August 1
3. What is the first angel's message and when was it to be proclaimed? Revela-
tion 14:7.

"The message itself sheds light as to the time when this movement is to take place.
It is declared to be a part of the 'everlasting gospel;' and it announces the opening of
the judgment. The message of salvation has been preached in all ages; but this message
is a part of the gospel which could be proclaimed only in the last days, for only then
would it be true that the hour of judgment had come." - The Great Controversy, pp. 355, 356.
"The first angel's message of Revelation 14, announcing the hour of God's judg-
ment and calling upon men to fear and worship Him, was designed to separate the
professed people of God from the corrupting influences of the world and to arouse
them to see their true condition of worldliness and backsliding."-Ibid., p. 379.

- 20-
4. What is the meaning of the words "give glory to Him" and "the hour of His
judgment is come"? Psalm 86:12; Daniel 7:9, 10, 13.

"To give glory to God is to reveal His character in our own, and thus make Him
known. And in whatever way we make known the Father or the Son, we glorify
God."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 979.
"The coming of Christ here described [in Daniel 7:13, 14] is not His second coming
to the earth. He comes to the Ancient of Days in heaven to receive dominion and glory
and a kingdom, which will be given Him at the close of His work as a mediator. It is
this coming, and not His second advent to the earth, that was foretold in prophecy to
take place at the termination of the 2300 days in 1844."- The Great Controversy, p. 480.

The Second Angel's Message D Tuesday

August 2

5. What is the second angel's message, and to whom does it apply? Revelation
14:8.

"Babylon is said to be 'the mother of harlots.' By her daughters must be symbolized

churches that cling to her doctrines and traditions, and follow her example of sacri-
ficing the truth and the approval of God, in order to form an unlawful alliance with the
world. The message of Revelation 14, announcing the fall of Babylon must apply to
religious bodies that were once pure and have become corrupt. Since this message
follows the warning of the judgment, it must be given in the last days; therefore it
cannot refer to the Roman Church alone, for that church has been in a fallen condition
for many centuries."-The Great Controversy, pp. 382, 383.
"The second angel's message of Revelation 14 was first preached in the summer
of 1844, and it then had a more direct application to the churches of the United States,
where the warning of the judgment had been most widely proclaimed and most
generally rejected, and where the declension in the churches had been most rapid. But
the message of the second angel did not reach its complete fulfillment in 1844." -Ibid.,
p.389.

6. What is the sin of Babylon, both the mother and daughters? Revelation
17:3-6; 18:2, 3.

"Babylon is also charged with the sin of unlawful connection with 'the kings of
the earth.' It was by departure from the Lord, and alliance with the heathen, that the
Jewish church became a harlot; and Rome, corrupting herself in like manner by seek-
ing the support of worldy powers, receives a like condemnation." - The Great Controversy.
p.382.
"Many of the Protestant churches are following Rome's example of iniquitous
connection with 'the kings of the earth' -the state churches, by their relation to
secular governments; and other denominations, by seeking the favor of the world.
And the term 'Babylon' -confusion-may be appropriately applied to these bodies, all
professing to derive their doctrines from the Bible, yet divided into almost in-
numerable sects, with widely conflicting creeds and theories." -Ibid., p. 383.

The Third Angel's Message D Wednesday

August 3

7. What does the third angel's message announce and when did it begin?
Revelation 14:9-12.

- 21-
"As the ministration of Jesus closed in the holy place, and He passed into the
holiest, and stood before the ark containing the law of God, He sent another mighty
angel with a third message to the world....
"I saw the third angel pointing upward, showing the disappointed ones the way to
the holiest of the heavenly sanctuary. As they by faith enter the most holy, they find
Jesus, and hope and joy spring up anew. I saw them looking back, reviewing the past,
from the proclamation of the second advent of Jesus, down through their experience
to the passing of the time in 1844. They see their disappointment explained, and joy
and certainty again animate them. The third angel has lighted up the past, the pres-
ent, and the future, and they know that God has indeed led them by His mysterious
providence." -Early Writings, pp. 254, 255.

8. What will be the result of the proclamation of the third angel's message?
Revelation 14:12; Ezekiel 20:12.

"The third angel's message calls for the presentation of the Sabbath of the fourth
commandment, and this truth must be brought before the world." -Selected Messages, book
1, p. 383.
"These truths, as presented in Revelation 14 in connection with 'the everlasting
gospel,' will distinguish the church of Christ at the time of His appearing. For as the
result of the threefold message it is announced: 'Here are they that keep the com-
mandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.' And this message is the last to be given
before the coming of the Lord." -The Great Controversy, pp. 453, 454.

The Sealing Work D Thursday

August 4

9. What is the work of the third angel? Revelation 7:1-4. How can we benefit
by this work? John 16:13 (first part).

"I then saw the third angel. Said my accompanying angel, 'Fearful is his work.
Awful is his mission. He is the angel that is to select the wheat from the tares, and
seal, or bind, the wheat for the heavenly garner. These things should engross the
whole mind, the whole attention.' "-Early Writings, p. 118.
"The mighty angel is seen ascending from the east (or sunrising). This mightiest
of angels has in his hand the seal of the living God, or of Him who alone can give life,
who can inscribe upon the foreheads the mark or inscription, to whom shall be
granted immortality, eternal life. It is the voice of this highest angel that had authority
to command the four angels to keep in check the four winds until this work was per-
formed, and until he should give the summons to let them loose.
"Those that overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil, will be the favored ones
who shall receive the seal of the living God. Those whose hands are not clean, whose
hearts are not pure, will not have the seal of the living God. Those who are planning
sin and acting it will be passed by. Only those who, in their attitude before God, are
filling the position of those who are repenting and confessing their sins in the great
antitypical day of atonement, will be recognized and marked as worthy of God's pro-
tection."-Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 444, 445.

10. What is the seal of the living God? Ephesians 1:13 (last part); 2 Thessalonians
2:13 (last part); John 17:17; Ezekiel 20:12. What is the mark of the beast?
What test is coming upon the world, and how will this test divide mankind
into two parties? Revelation 13:16, 17.

- 22-
"What is the seal of the living God, which is placed in the foreheads of His people?
It is a mark which angels, but not human eyes, can read; for the destroying angel
must see this mark of redemption."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 4,
p. 116l.
"Just as soon as the people of God are sealed in their foreheads-it is not any seal
or mark that can be seen, but a settling into the truth, both intellectually and spiritual-
ly, so they cannot be moved-just as soon as God's people are sealed and prepared for
the shaking, it will come. Indeed, it has begun already."-Ibid.
"The change of the Sabbath is the sign or mark of the authority of the Romish
church.... The mark of the beast is the papal sabbath, which has been accepted by
the world in the place of the day of God's appointment."-Evangelism, p. 234.
"In the issue of the great contest two parties are developed, those who 'worship
the beast and his image,' and receive his mark, and those who receive 'the seal of the
living God,' who have the 'Father's name written in their foreheads.' "-The SDA Bible
Commenlary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 980.

The Urgent Need and the Promised Help D Sunday

August 7
1. What condition called for the coming of the angel of Revelation 18? Revela-
tion 3:15-17.

"Satan had devised a state of things whereby the proclamation of the third angel's
message shall be bound about. We must beware of his plans and methods. There
must be no toning down of the truth, no muffling of the message for this time. The
third angel's message must be strengthened and confirmed. The eighteenth chapter
of Revelation reveals the importance of presenting the truth in no measured terms but
with boldness and power. ... There has been too much beating about the bush in the
proclamation of the third angel's message. The message has not been given as clearly
and distinctly as it should have been." -Evangelism, p. 230.
"In the Revelation John says of the heavenly messenger who unites with the third
angel: 'I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the
earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice.' Revela-
tion 18:1,2. We are in danger of giving the third angel's message in so indefinite a
manner that it does not impress the people. So many other interests are brought in
that the very message which should be proclaimed with power becomes tame and
voiceless.... While the churches profess to believe in Christ, they are violating the •
law which Christ Himself proclaimed from Sinai. The Lord bids us: 'Show My people
their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.' "-Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 60, 61. J
2. What is the first work to be done by the angel of Revelation 18? Where and in
whose behalf must this work be done? Isaiah 58:1; Revelation 3:18-20.

"A great work is to be done, and God sees that our leading men have need of
more light, that they may unite with the messengers whom He sends to accomplish
the work that He designs shall be done. The Lord has raised up messengers, and en-
dued them with His Spirit, and has said, 'Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a
trumpet, and show My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins'
(Isa. 58:1)." -Gospel Workers, p. 304.
"The prophet [John] declares, 'And after these things I saw another angel come
down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.'
Brightness, glory, and power are to be connected with the third angel's message, and

- 24-
conviction will follow wherever it is preached in demonstration of the Spirit. How will
any of our brethren know when this light shall come to the people of God? As yet, we
certainly have not seen the light that answers to this description. God has light for His
people, and all who will accept it will see the sinfulness of remaining in a lukewarm
condition; they will heed the counsel of the True Witness."- The Review and Herald, April 1,
1890.
"It [the counsel of the True Witness] is designed to arouse the people of God, to
discover to them their backslidings, and to lead to zealous repentance, that they may
be favored with the presence of Jesus, and be fitted for the loud cry of the third
angel."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 186.

3. What is written about the beginning of the work of the fourth angel? With
what message did he begin his work? Revelation 18: 1 (first part); 3: 18 (white
raiment); Jeremiah 33:16.

"I saw another mighty angel commissioned to descend to the earth, to unite his
voice with the third angel, and give power and force to his message.... The work of
this angel comes in at the right time to join in the last great work of the third angel's
message as it swells to a loud cry."-Early Writings, p. 277.
"The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already
begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer.
This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth."-

faith to be revealed in us? Romans 3:31; 6:16-18.

"This message [of justification by faith] was to bring more prominently before the
world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented
justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteous-
ness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God."
-Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 91, 92.

A Present Duty D Tuesday

August 9

• 5. What is the question of most vital importance for this time? Exodus 32:26
(first part).

"The question of most vital importance for this time is, 'Who is on the Lord's
side? Who will unite with the angel [of Revelation 18] in giving the message of truth to
the world? Who will receive the light that is to fill the whole earth with its glory?' "-
The Review and Herald, November 5, 1889.

6. What must we do at this time if we want to be prepared to meet the great

issue which is coming upon the world? Isaiah 2:5.

"Mystic Babylon has not been sparing in the blood of the saints and shall we [not]
be wide awake to catch the beams of light which have been shining from the light of
the angel who is to brighten the earth with his glory." -Selected Messages, book 3, p. 426.

- 25-
A Present Duty (continued) o Wednesday
August 10

7. What preparation does the receiving of the light of Revelation 18:1 require?
Acts 3:19; James 4:7-10.

"If we would receive the light of the glorious angel that shall lighten the earth with
his glory, let us see to it that our hearts are cleansed, emptied of self, and turned to-
ward heaven, that they may be ready for the latter rain. Let us be obtaining a fitting
up to join in the proclamation of the angel who shall lighten the earth with his glory."-
The Signs of the Times, August 1, 1892.

8. What position in connection with Revelation 18: 1 and Jude 3 will be taken at
this time by those who want to be acknowledged as laborers together with
God? What is the faith once delivered to the saints? Jude 3.

"The power and glory with which the law was given reveal its importance. It is
the faith once delivered to the saints by Christ our Redeemer speaking from Sinai."-
Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 198.
"All who are laborers together with God will contend most earnestly for the faith
once delivered to the saints. They will not be turned from the present message, which
is already lightening the earth with its glory."-Seleeted Messages, book 2, p. 114.

Second Phase: External Work o Thursday

August 11

9. When the internal work is completed (preparation: revival and reformation),

what external work will be accomplished by the "movement symbolized by
the angel" of Revelation 18? Revelation 18:2-4.

"Thus the substance of the second angel's message is again given to the world by
that other angel who lightens the earth with his glory." -Selected Messages, book 2, p. 116.
"Of Babylon, at the time brought to view in this prophecy, it is declared: 'Her sins
have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.' Revelation 18:5.
She has filled up the measure of her guilt, and destruction is about to fall upon her.
But God still has a people in Babylon; and before the visitation of His judgments these
faithful ones must be called out, that they partake not of her sins and 'receive not of
her plagues.' Hence the movement symbolized by the angel coming down from heaven,
lightening the earth with his glory and crying mightily with a strong voice, announcing
the sins of Babylon. In connection with his message the call is heard: 'Come out of her,
My people.' These announcements, uniting with the third angel's message, constitute
the final warning to be given to the inhabitants ofthe earth." - The Great Controversy, p. 604.

10. What will be the result of the final warning? Isaiah 11:11; John 10:16.

"At the commencement of the time of trouble, we were filled with the Holy Ghost
as we went forth and proclaimed the Sabbath more fully. This enraged the churches
and nominal Adventists, as they could not refute the Sabbath truth. And at this time
God's chosen all saw clearly that we had the truth, and they came out and endured the
persecution with us."-Early Writings, p. 33.
"I saw that God has honest children among the nominal Adventists and the fallen
churches, and before the plagues shall be poured out, ministers and people will be call-
ed out from these churches and will gladly receive the truth. Satan knows this; and

-26 -
before the loud cry of the third angel is given, he raises an excitement in these
religious bodies, that those who have rejected the truth may think that God is with
them. He hopes to deceive the honest and lead them to think that God is still working
for the churches. But the light will shine, and all who are honest will leave the fallen
churches, and take their stand with the remnant."-Ibid., p. 261.
"Notwithstanding the agencies combined against the truth, a large number take
their stand upon the Lord's side."-The Great Controversy, p. 612.

Lesson 8 Sabbath, August 20, 1983

CHRIST OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

The righteousness of Christ, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice to the

whole world, is the character of Christ reflected in His people.

KEY TEXT: "Christ Jesus ... is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and
sanctification, and redemption" (1 Corinthians 1:30).

Self-Justification o Sunday
August 14

1. What did our first parents substitute for the heavenly garments that they
had lost? Genesis 3:7. How did they try to justify themselves? Genesis 3:12,
13.

"After Adam and Eve had eaten of the forbidden fruit, they were filled with a
sense of shame and terror. At first their only thought was how to excuse their sin and
escape the dreaded sentence of death. When the Lord inquired concerning their sin,
Adam replied, laying the guilt partly upon God and partly upon his companion: 'The
woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.' The
woman put the blame upon the serpent, saying, 'The serpent beguiled me, and I did
eat.' Genesis 3:12,13. Why did You make the serpent? Why did You suffer him to come
into Eden? These were the questions implied in her excuse for her sin, thus charging
God with the responsibility of their fall. The spirit of self-justification originated in the
father of lies and has been exhibited by all the sons and daughters of Adam." -Steps to
Christ, p. 40.

2. How have sinners tried to establish their own righteousness ever since the
fall of our first parents? What is all self-righteousness? Isaiah 64:6.

"This is what the transgressors of God's law have done ever since the day of
Adam and Eve's disobedience. They have sewed together fig leaves to cover the
nakedness caused by transgression. They have worn the garments of their own devis-
ing, by works of their own they have tried to cover their sins, and make themselves
acceptable with God." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 311.

Christ's Righteousness in Us o Monday

August 15

3. What provision did God make to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve?
Genesis 3:21. What does this provision symbolize? Philippians 3:9.

"Only the covering which Christ Himself has provided can make us meet to ap-
pear in God's presence. This covering, the robe of His own righteousness, Christ will
put upon every repenting, believing soul. ...

- 28-
"This robe, woven in the loom of heaven,. has in it not one thread of human devis-
ing. Christ in His humanity wrought out a perfect character, and this character He of-
fers to impart to uS."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 311.

4. Through whom alone can the righteousness of the law be fulfilled in us?
Romans 8:3, 4. How?

"If you are God's children, begotten by His Spirit, you live by the life of God. In
Christ dwells 'all the fullness of the Godhead bodily' (Colossians 2:9); and the life of
Jesus is made manifest 'in our mortal flesh' (2 Corinthians 4:11). That life in you will
produce the same character and manifest the same works as it did in Him. Thus you
will be in harmony with every precept of His law; for 'the law of the Lord is perfect,
restoring the soul.' Psalm 19:7, margin. Through love 'the righteousness of the law'
will be 'fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.' Romans
8:4."- Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 78.
Righteousness Specified D Tuesday
August 16
5. What is the relationship between righteousness and obedience to the law of
Ten Commandments? Isaiah 48:18; Matthew 5:18-20; Romans 2:26, 27.
How is righteousness defined by the Spirit of Prophecy?

"Righteousness is right doing, and it is by their deeds that all will be judged. Our
characters are revealed by what we do. The works show whether the faith is genuine."
-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 312.

6. On what condition can a person be considered righteous in the eyes of God?

John 8:11; Romans 2:13.

"But while God can be just, and yet justify the sinner through the merits of
Christ, no man can cover his soul with the garments of Christ's righteousness while
practicing known sins, or neglecting known duties. God requires the entire surrender
of the heart, before justification can take place; and in order for man to retain justifica-
tion, there must be continual obedience, through active, living faith that works by love
and purifies the soul.
" ... In order for man to be justified by faith, faith must reach a point where it
will control the affections and impulses of the heart; and it is by obedience that faith
itself is made perfect." -Selected Messages, book I, p. 366.

Distinction Between Justification and Sanctification D Wednesday

August 17

7. What is justification and how can we obtain it? Romans 3:23-25. What must
we give up before we can obtain Christ's righteousness? Zechariah 3:3, 4.

"Justification is a full, complete pardon of sin, The moment a sinner accepts

Christ by faith, that moment he is pardoned." - The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
mentsl, vol. 6, p. 1071.
"What is justification by faith? It is the work of God in laying the glory of man in
the dust, and doing for man that which it is not in his power to do for himself."-Testi-
monies to Ministers, p. 456.

8. What is sanctification and how are we sanctified? John 17:17; 16:13.

- 29-
"Bible sanctification ... is truth received in the heart, and practically carried out
in the life."-Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 339.
"Righteousness within is testified to by righteousness without. He who is
righteous within is not hard-hearted and unsympathetic, but day by day he grows into
the image of Christ, going on from strength to strength. He who is being sanctified by
the truth will be self-controlled, and will follow in the footsteps of Christ until grace is
lost in glory. The righteousness by which we are justified is imputed; the righteous-
ness by which we are sanctified is imparted. The first is our title to heaven, the second
is our fitness for heaven." -Messages to Young People, p. 35.

The White Raiment o Thursday

August 18

9. What invitation is extended to God's people in the period of Laodicea?

Revelation 3: 18. What does the raiment of white linen represent? Revelation
19:8 (last part).

"The white raiment is purity of character, the righteousness of Christ imparted to

the sinner. This is indeed a garment of heavenly texture, that can be bought only of
Christ for a life of willing obedience."- Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 88.
"The fine linen, says the Scripture, 'is the righteousness of saints.' Eph. 5:27. It is
the righteousness of Christ, His own unblemished character, that through faith is im-
parted to all who receive Him as their personal Saviour."-Christ's Object Lessons. p. 310.

10. What promise is given to the overcomers? Revelation 3:5. What is our only
hope? Jeremiah 23:6; 1 Corinthians 1:30.

"When we submit ourselves to Christ, the heart is united with His heart, the will
is merged in His will, the mind becomes one with His mind, the thoughts are brought
into captivity to Him; we live His life. This is what it means to be clothed with the gar-
ment of His righteousness. Then as the Lord looks upon us He sees, not the fig-leaf
garment, not the nakedness and deformity of sin, but His own robe of righteousness,
which is perfect obedience to the law of Jehovah.' '-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 312.

Lesson 9 Sabbath, August 27, 1983

TRUE SABBATHKEEPING-A TEST

The Sabbath is to be a sign of distinction between the world and God's people. It
is a test for us now, and it will be the final test for the whole Christian world.

KEY TEXT: "Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of
rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath
of the Lord in all your dwellings" (Leviticus 23:3).
A Golden Link D Sunday
August 21
1. What explicit command, given to the children of Israel, has been in force
even to this day? Leviticus 19:30; Mark 2:27.

"The Sabbath is a golden clasp that unites God and His people. But the Sabbath
command has been broken. God's holy day has been desecrated. The Sabbath has
been desecrated. The Sabbath has been torn from its place by the man of sin, and a
common working day has been exalted in its stead. A breach has been made in the
law, and this breach is to be repaired. The true Sabbath is to be exalted to its rightful
position as God's rest day."-Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 351, 352.
"Those who truly believe in Christ will openly conform to the law of Jehovah.
The Sabbath is the sign between God and His people; and we are to make visible our
conformity to the law of God by observing the Sabbath. It is to be the mark of distinc-
tion between God's chosen people and the world."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 7, p. 949.

2. What promise is given to the faithful Sabbathkeepers in the Christian era?

Isaiah 56:4-7.

"To those who reverence His holy day the Sabbath is a sign that God recognizes
them as His chosen people. It is a pledge that He will fulfill to them His covenant.
Every soul who accepts the sign of God's government places himself under the
divine, everlasting covenant. He fastens himself to the golden chain of obedience,
every link of which is a promise."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 350.
A Work ofRestoration D Monday
August 22
3. How was the seal removed from the law of God? Daniel 7:25. What are the
true followers of Jesus called to do? Isaiah 8:16.

"When the Sabbath was changed by the papal power, the seal was taken from the
law. The disciples of Jesus are called upon to restore it by exalting the Sabbath of the
fourth commandment to its rightful position as the Creator's memorial and the sign of
His authority." - The Great Controversy, p. 452.

- 31-
4. What is the special work of God's remnant people concerning the Sabbath?
Isaiah 56:1, 2; 58:12, 13; 61:4.

"The Sabbath has been torn from its place by the man of sin, and a common
working day has been exalted in its stead. A breach has been made in the law, and
this breach is to be repaired. The true Sabbath is to be exalted to its rightful position
as God's rest day. In the fifty-eighth chapter of Isaiah is outlined the work which God's
people are to do. They are to magnify the law and make it honorable, to build up the
old waste places, and to raise up the foundations of many generations." - Testimonies, vol.
6, pp. 351, 352.
"The prophet [Isaiah] here describes a people who, in a time of general departure
from truth and righteousness, are seeking to restore the principles that are the founda-
tion of the kingdom of God. They are repairers of a breach that has been made in God's
law-the wall that He has placed around His chosen ones for their protection, and
obedience to whose precepts of justice, truth, and purity is to be their perpetual safe-
guard." -Prophets and Kings, pp. 677, 678.

God's People Tested o Tuesday

August 23

5. When did the Sabbath become a test to the children of Israel? Exodus 16:26-
28. Since 1844, when the temple of heaven was opened and the ark contain-
ing the Ten Commandments was seen, what has the Sabbath been for us?

"There was something to be done in preparing the heaven-sent bread for the
children of Israel. The Lord told them that this work must be done on Friday, the
preparation day. This was a test to them. God desired to see whether or not they
would keep ,the Sabbath holy."- Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 355.
"The Sabbath of the fourth commandment is the test for this time, and all con-
nected with this great memorial is to be kept before the people." -Evangelism, p. 213.
"Since Jesus has opened the door into the most holy place, which contains the
ark, the commandments have been shining out to God's people, and they are being
tested on the Sabbath question.
" ... Because so many good Christians have fallen asleep in the triumphs of faith
and have not kept the true Sabbath, they were doubting about its being a test for us
noW."-Early Writings, pp. 42, 43.

6. How are the people of God tested in this sealing time? Exodus 20:9, 10;
James 2:10.

"Those who discuss business matters or lay plans on the Sabbath are regarded by
God as though engaged in the actual transaction of business. To keep the Sabbath holy,
we should not even allow our minds to dwell upon things of a worldly character."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 307.
"Those who neglect to prepare for the Sabbath on the sixth day, and who cook
food upon the Sabbath, violate the fourth commandment, and are transgressors of
God's law. All who are really anxious to observe the Sabbath according to the com-
mandment, will not cook any food upon the Sabbath." -Spiritual Gifts, vol. 3, pp. 253, 254.
"When your temporal circumstances seem to require attention, you [Brother K]
violate the fourth commandment without compunction. You make the keeping of
God's law a matter of convenience, obeying or disobeying as your business or inclina-
tion indicates. This is not honoring the Sabbath as a sacred institution. You grieve the
Spirit of God and dishonor your Redeemer by pursuing this reckless course.

- 32-
"A partial observance of the Sabbath law is not accepted by the Lord and has a
worse effect upon the minds of sinners than if you made no profession of being a Sab-
bathkeeper." - Testimonies. vol. 4, p. 248. .

The Final Test D Wednesday

August 24

7. Who will be tested on the question of Sabbathkeeping in the near future?

Acts 17:30.

"The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty; for it is the point of truth especially
controverted. When the final test shall be brought to bear upon men, then the line of
distinction will be drawn between those who serve God and those who serve Him
not."- The Great Controversy. p. 605.
"None are condemned until they have had the light and have seen the obligation
of the fourth commandment. But when the decree shall go forth enforcing the
counterfeit sabbath, and the loud cry of the third angel shall warn men against the
worship of the beast and his image, the line will be clearly drawn between the false
and the true. Then those who still continue in transgression will receive the mark of
the beast." -Evangelism. pp. 234, 235.
"There are many with whom the Spirit of God is striving. The time of God's
destructive judgments is the time of mercy for those who have had no opportunity to
learn what is truth. Tenderly will the Lord look upon them. His heart of mercy is
touched; His hand is still stretched out to save, while the door is closed to those who
would not enter."- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 97.

8. How many classes of people will exist in the time of the final test, at the close
of human probation? Malachi 3: 18.

"In the issue of the contest all Christendom will be divided into two great classes
-those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and those who
worship the beast and his image and receive his mark."- The Great Controversy. p. 450.
"While one class, by accepting the sign of submission to earthly powers, receive
the mark of the beast, the other choosing the token of allegiance to divine authority,
receive the seal of God." -Ibid.• p. 605.

Sealed in the Forehead D Thursday

August 25

9. Although there are millions of professed Sabbathkeepers today, how many

will receive the seal of God? Romans 9:27; Revelation 7:4.

"'Many are called, but few are chosen.' Many hear the invitation of mercy, are
tested and proved; but few are sealed with the seal of the living God."-Testimonies. vol.
5. p. 50.
"The great mass of professing Christians will meet with bitter disappointment in
the day of God. They have not upon their foreheads the seal of the living God."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 970.
"Not all who profess to keep the Sabbath will be sealed. There are many even
among those who teach the truth to others who will not receive the seal of God in their
foreheads. They had the light of truth, they knew their Master's will, they understood
every point of our faith, but they had not corresponding works."-Testimonies. vol. 5. pp.
213,214.

- 33-
10. What will be the alternative for those who do not receive the seal of the living
God? Ezekiel 9:5, 6. What should be our continual desire and endeavor?

"Our own course of action will determine whether we shall receive the seal of the
living God or be cut down by the destroying weapons."-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 212.
"The seal of God will never be placed upon the forehead of an impure man or
woman. It will never be placed upon the forehead of the ambitious, world-loving man
or woman. It will never be placed upon the forehead of men or women of false tongues
or deceitful hearts." -Ibid., p. 216.
"Those who are distrustful of self, who are humbling themselves before God and
purifying their souls by obeying the truth-these are receiving the heavenly mold and
preparing for the seal of God in their foreheads." -Ibid.
"Let us strive with all the power that God has given us to be among the hundred
and forty-four thousand."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 970.

THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY

A happy family is one of the greatest blessings among Christians. It exerts a tell-
ing influence on the ungodly, showing that the sacred marriage institution is to
be restored by the gospel.

KEY TEXT: . "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the
great and dreadful day of the Lord: and he shall turn the heart of the
fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers,
lest I come and smite the earth with a curse" (Malachi 4:5, 6).

Marriage - A Divine Institution D Sunday

August 28

1. What institution came into existence with the celebration of the first mar-
riage? Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:6.

"Then, as the Creator joined the hands of the holy pair in wedlock, saying, A man
shall 'leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be
one' (Genesis 2:24), He enunciated the law of marriage for all the children of Adam to
the close of time. That which the Eternal Father Himself had pronounced good was
the law of highest blessing and development for man." - Thoughts From the Mount ofBlessing,
pp. 63, 64.
"God celebrated the first marriage. Thus the institution has for its originator the
Creator of the universe. 'Marriage is honorable' (Hebrews 13:4); it was one of the first
gifts of God to man, and it is one of the two institutions that, after the Fall, Adam
" brought with him beyond the gates of Paradise. When the divine principles are recog-
nized and obeyed in this relation, marriage is a blessing; it guards the purity and happi-
ness of the race, it provides for man's social needs, it elevates the physical, the intel-
lectual, and the moral nature." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 46.

2. How do we know that Jesus, while on earth, recognized the marriage institu-
tion? John 2:2.

"He who gave Eve to Adam as a helpmeet, performed His first miracle at a mar-
riage festival. In the festal hall where friends and kindred rejoiced together, Christ
began His public ministry. Thus He sanctioned marriage, recognizing it as an institu-
tion that He Himself had established. He ordained that men and women should be
united in holy wedlock, to rear families whose members, crowned with honor, should
be recognized as members of the family above.
"Christ honored the marriage relation by making it also a symbol of the union be-
tween Him and His redeemed ones."- The Ministry of Heating, p. 356.

- 35-
Degraded by Sin D Monday
August 29
3. What happened to the marriage institution after the fall? Luke 17:27;
Genesis 4:19.

"It was Satan's studied effort to pervert the marriage institution, to weaken its
obligations and lessen its sacredness; for in no surer way could he deface the image of
God in man and open the door to misery and vice." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 338.
4. What sin led and is still leading to the degradation of mankind? Genesis 4:23,
24; 6:1, 2.

"In the beginning, God gave to Adam one wife, thus showing His order. He never
designed that man should have a plurality of wives. Lamech was the first who departed
in this respect from God's wise arrangement. He had two wives, which created discord
in his family. The envy and jealousy of both made Lamech unhappy." -Spiritual Gifts. vol.
3, p. 99.
"Polygamy was practiced at an early date. It was one of the sins that brought the
wrath of God upon the antediluvian world. Yet after the Flood it again became wide-
spread." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 338.
"How often marriages are formed between the godly and the ungodly, because
inclination governs in the selection of husband or wife! The parties do not ask counsel
of God, nor have His glory in view."-Ibid., p. 563.
Marriage Institution Restored D Tuesday
August 30
5. What specific work must be accomplished in these last days? Matthew
17:11; Malachi 4:5,6.

"In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored." -Prophets and Kings,
p.678.
"Like every other one of God's good gifts entrusted to the keeping of humanity,
marriage has been perverted by sin; but it is the purpose of the gospel to restore its
purity and beauty." -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 64.
6. What is the rule in case of separation between husband and wife? 1 Corin-
thians 7:10,11.

"Men are not at liberty to make a standard of law for themselves, to avoid God's
law and please their own inclination. They must come to God's great moral standard
of righteousness."- The Adventist Home. p. 342.
A Lifelong Tie D Wednesday
August 31
7. For how long does the marriage vow unite husband and wife? Romans 7:1-3.

"This [marriage] vow links the destinies of the two individuals with bonds which
nought but the hand of death should sever."- Testimonies. vol. 4. p. 507.
"Both the man and the woman should carefully consider whether they can cleave
to each other through the vicissitudes of life as long as they both shall live. "- The Ad-
ventist Home. p. 340.

- 36-
8. How does God regard the action of a party who remarries while the other
spouse is living? Mark 10:11, 12; Luke 16:18. How will God deal with those
who profess to keep the law yet break the seventh commandment?

"They [God's commandment-keeping people] profess to be standing upon the ele-

vated platform of eternal truth, keeping all of God's commandments; therefore, if they
indulge in sin, if they commit fornication and adultery, their crime is of tenfold greater
magnitude than is that of the classes I have named, who do not acknowledge the law
of God as binding upon them."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 451.

The Family - A Stronghold o Thursday

September 1

9. What counsel is given to husbands, wives, and children? Colossians 3:18-20.

"The home circle should be regarded as a sacred place, a symbol of heaven, a mir-
ror in which to reflect ourselves. Friends and acquaintances we may have, but in the
home life they are not to meddle."- The Adventist Home, p. 177.
"Society is composed of families, and is what the heads of families make it. Out of
the heart are 'the issues of life' (Proverbs 4:23); and the heart of the community, of
the church, and of the nation is the household. The well-being of society, the success
of the church, the prosperity of the nation, depend upon home influences."- The Ministry
of Healing, p. 349.

10. What is a well-ordered home? How can true happiness be attained? Psalm
128:1-4.

"We must let Christ into our hearts and homes if we would walk in the light. Home
should be made all that the word implies. It should be a little heaven upon earth, a place
where the affections are cultivated instead of being studiously repressed." 7" Testimonies,
vol. 3, p. 539.
"The presence of Christ alone can make men and women happy. All the common
waters of life Christ can turn into the wine of heaven. The home then becomes as an
Eden of bliss; the family, a beautiful symbol of the family in heaven."-The Adventist
Home, p. 28.

JESUS' GLORIOUS COMING

The second coming of Jesus, as the great link in the prophetic chain, fulfills the
dearest aspiration of every true child of God.

KEY TEXT: "I go to prepare a place for you. And if 1 go and prepare a place for
you, 1 will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where 1 am,
there ye may be also" (John 14:2, 3).

The Keynote of the Scriptures o Sunday

September 4

1. Since when have holy men been looking forward to the coming of Christ in
glory? Who was favored with the first vision about Christ's second coming?
Jude 14, 15.

"The doctrine of the second advent is the very keynote of the Sacred Scriptures.
From the day when the first pair turned their sorrowing steps from Eden, the children
of faith have waited the coming of the Promised One to break the destroyer's power
and bring them again to the lost Paradise. Holy men of old looked forward to the ad-
vent of the Messiah in glory, as the consummation of their hope. Enoch, only the
seventh in descent from them that dwelt in Eden, he who for three centuries on earth
walked with his God, was permitted to behold from afar the coming of the Deliverer.
'Behold,' he declared, 'the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, to execute
judgment upon all.' Jude 14, 15."-The Great Controversy, p. 299.

2. What is the coming of Christ called by the apostle Paul? Titus 2:13.

"The coming of the Lord has been in all ages the hope of His true followers. The
Saviour's parting promise upon Olivet, that He would come again, lighted up the
future for His disciples, filling their hearts with joy and hope that sorrow could not
quench nor trials dim. Amid suffering and persecution, 'the appearing of the great
God and our Saviour Jesus Christ' was the 'blessed hope.' "-The Great Controversy, p. 302.

Jesus' Promise o Monday

September 5

3. What promise, made by Jesus to the disciples, was repeated by the angels at
His ascension? John 14:3; Acts 1:10, 11.

"The promise of Christ's second coming was ever to be kept fresh in the minds of
His disciples. The same Jesus whom they had seen. ascending into heaven, would
come again, to take to Himself those who here below give themselves to His service."
- The Acts of the Apostles, p. 33.

- 38-
4. While Jesus is preparing a place for us, what is our duty in this waiting time?
Matthew 24:42-44.

"I saw that watch after watch was in the past. Because of this, should there be a
lack of vigilance? Oh, no! There is the greater necessity of unceasing watchfulness, for
now the moments are fewer than before the passing of the first watch. Now the period
of waiting is necessarily shorter than at first. If we watched with unabated vigilance
then, how much more need of double watchfulness in the second watch. The passing
of the second watch has brought us to the third, and now it is inexcusable to abate our
watchfulness. The third watch calls for threefold earnestness. To become impatient
now would be to lose all our earnest, perservering watching heretofore. The long night
of gloom is trying; but the morning is deferred in mercy, because if the Master should
come, so many would be found unready."- Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 193, 194.

The Object ofHis Coming D Tuesday

September 6

5. What change will the living saints experience at the coming of Jesus? Philip-
pians 3:20, 21.

"Sin defaced and almost obliterated the divine image; but Christ came to restore
that which had been lost. He will change our vile bodies and fashion them like unto
His glorious body. The mortal, corruptible form, devoid of comeliness, once polluted
with sin, becomes perfect, beautiful, and immortal. All blemishes and deformities are
left in the grave. Restored to the tree of life in the long-lost Eden, the redeemed will
'grow up' (Malachi 4:2) to the full stature of a race in its primeval glory....
"The living righteous are changed 'in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.' At
the voice of God they were glorified; now they are made immortal and with the risen
saints are caught up to meet their Lord in the air."-The Great Controversy, p. 645.

6. What desire of Jesus will be fulfilled at His coming? John 17:24.

"Before the ransomed throng is the Holy City. Jesus opens wide the pearly gates,
and the nations that have kept the truth enter in. There they behold the Paradise of
God, the home of Adam in his innocency. Then that voice, richer than any music that
ever fell on mortal ear, is heard, saying: 'Your conflict is ended.' 'Come, ye blessed of
My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.'
"Now is fulfilled the Saviour's prayer for His disciples: 'I will that they also, whom
Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am.' 'Faultless before the presence of His
glory with exceeding joy' (Jude 24), Christ presents to the Father the purchase of His
blood, declaring: 'Here am I, and the children whom Thou hast given Me.' 'Those that
Thou gavest Me I have kept.' "- The Great Controversy, p. 646.

Indifference and Carelessness D Wednesday

September 7

7. What characterizes the general attitude of professed Christians in the time

of the end? Luke 17:26-30.

"In the days of Noah the overwhelming majority was opposed to the truth, and
enamored with a tissue of falsehoods. The land was filled with violence. War, crime,
murder, was the order of the day. Just so will it be before Christ's second coming."-
The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Commentsl, vol. 1, p. 1090.

- 39-
8. What did the apostle Peter say regarding scoffers in the last days? 2 Peter
3:3,4.

"When these things [the signs of the times pointing to Christ's soon coming] are
dwelt upon as they should be, scoffers will be developed who walk after their own
lusts, saying, 'Where is the promise of His coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all
things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.' But 'when they shall
say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them.' 'But ye, brethren,
are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.' Thank God, all will
not be rocked to sleep in the cradle of carnal security. There will be faithful ones who
will discern the signs of the times. While a large number professing present truth will
deny their faith by their works, there will be some who will endure unto the end."-
Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 10.
"The scoffers mock the waiting, watching ones, and inquire: 'Where is the promise
of His coming? You have been disappointed. Engage now with us, and you will prosper
in worldly things. Get gain, get money, and be honored of the world.' The waiting ones
look upward and answer: 'We are watching.' And by turning from earthly pleasure
and worldly fame, and from the deceitfulness of riches, they show themselves to be in
that position. By watching they become strong; they overcome sloth and selfishness
and love of ease." -Ibid., vol. 2, p. 195.
Be YeReady D Thursday
September 8
9. What special warning is for those who live close to the time of Christ's com-
ing? Mark 13:33-37.

"I saw that the remnant were not prepared for what is coming upon the earth.
Stupidity, like lethargy, seemed to hang upon the minds of most of those who profess
to believe that we are having the last message. My accompanying angel cried out with
awful solemnity, 'Get ready! get ready! get ready!"-Early Writings, p. 119.
10. Whom will the coming of the Lord catch unawares? 1 Thessalonians 5:2-4;
Revelation 16:15.

"I saw some becoming weary; their eyes were directed downward, and they were
engrossed with earthly things, and were unfaithful in watching. They were saying: 'In
the first watch we expected our Master, but were disappointed. We thought surely
He would come in the second watch, but that passed, and He came not. We may be
again disappointed. We need not be so particular. He may not come in the following
watch. Weare in the third watch, and now we think it best to lay up our treasure on the
earth, that we may be secure against want.' Many were sleeping, stupefied with the
cares of this life and allured by the deceitfulness of riches from their waiting, watching
position."-Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 192.

Lesson 12 Sabbath, September 17,1983

ONE THOUSAND YEARS OF PEACE

The millennium is a period of one thousand years mentioned in Revelation 20.

Many believe that during this period Christ will reign on earth. Hence, they regard
it as a period of great happiness, good government, freedom from wickedness,
and such like. But the Bible teaches something different.

KEY TEXT: "And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given
unto them ... and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years"
(Revelation 20:4).
The Earth Emptied D Sunday
September 11
1. What will be the destiny of the saints and the wicked at the coming of Jesus?
1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17; 2 Thessalonians 1:9; 2:8.

"At the coming of Christ the wicked are blotted from the face of the whole earth
-consumed with the spirit of His mouth and destroyed by the brightness of His
glory. Christ takes His people to the City of God, and the earth is emptied of its in-
habitants."-The Great Controversy, p. 657.

2. What will be the condition of this earth during the millennium? Jeremiah
4:23-26.

"The whole earth appears like a desolate wilderness. The ruins of cities and
villages destroyed by the earthquake, uprooted trees, ragged rocks thrown out by the
sea or torn out of the earth itself, are scattered over its surface, while vast caverns
mark the spot where the mountains have been rent from their foundations." - The Great
Controversy, p. 657.

Satan in Prison D Monday

September 12
3. What will happen to Satan when the righteous are taken to heaven and the
wicked are destroyed by the glory of Jesus? Revelation 20:1, 2.

4. What restriction will be imposed on Satan during the millennium? Isaiah

14:18-20.

"Here [this earth reduced to a state of chaos and desolation] is to be the home of
Satan with his evil angels for a thousand years. Limited to the earth, he will not have
access to other worlds to tempt and annoy those who have never fallen. It is in this
sense that he is bound: there are none remaining, upon whom he can exercise his
power. He is wholly cut off from the work of deception and ruin which for so many
centuries has been his sale delight."- The Great Controversy, p. 659.

- 41-
The judgment in Heaven D Tuesday
September 13
5. What is written concerning the judgment of the wicked? 1 Corinthians 6:2,
3; Revelation 20:4.

"During the thousand years between the first and the second resurrection the judg-
ment of the wicked takes place. The apostle Paul points to this judgment as an event
that follows the second advent."- The Great Controversy, p. 660.
6. What is the standard by which Satan and the wicked will be judged? Romans
2:12; James 2:10-12.

"Then I saw thrones, and Jesus and the redeemed saints sat upon them; and the
saints reigned as kings and priests unto God. Christ, in union with His people, judged
the wicked dead, comparing their acts with the statute book, the Word of God, and
deciding every case according to the deeds done in the body. Then they meted out to
the wicked the portion which they must suffer, according to their works; and it was
written against their names in the book of death. Satan also and his angels were judged
by Jesus and the saints." -Early Writings, pp. 290, 291.
The judgment in Heaven (continued) D Wednesday
September 14
7. How would the wicked behave if they were given a second chance? Isaiah
26:10.

"As the wicked went into their graves, so they come forth with the same enmity
to Christ and the same spirit of rebellion. They are to have no new probation in which
to remedy the defects of their past lives. Nothing would be gained by this. A lifetime
of transgression has not softened their hearts. A second probation, were it given them,
would be occupied as was the first in evading the requirements of God and exciting
rebellion against Him."- The Great Controversy, p. 662.

8. What will take place after the judgment in heaven is finished? Revelation
20:7; 21:2.

"After the judgment of the wicked dead had been finished, at the end of the one
thousand years, Jesus left the city, and the saints and a train of the angelic host followed
Him. Jesus descended upon a great mountain, which as soon as His feet touched it,
parted asunder and became a mighty plain. Then we looked up and saw the great and
beautiful city, with twelve foundations, and twelve gates, three on each side, and an
angel at each gate. We cried out, 'The city! the great city! it is coming down from God
out of heaven!' And it came down in all its splendor and dazzling glory and settled in
the mighty plain which Jesus had prepared for it." -Early Writings, p. 291.
The End of the Controversy D Thursday
September 15
9. What will be the last and the greatest effort of Satan? Revelation 20:8, 9.

"Now Satan prepares for a last mighty struggle for the supremacy. While deprived
of his power and cut off from his work of deception, the prince of evil was miserable
and dejected; but as the wicked dead are raised and he sees the vast multitudes upon

- 42-
his side, his hopes revive, and he determines not to yield the great controversy....
With fiendish exultation he points to the unnumbered millions who have been raised
from the dead and declares that as their leader he is well able to overthrow the city
and regain his throne and his kingdom." - The Great Controversy, p. 663.

10. What will be the destiny of Satan, his angels, and all the wicked? Revelation
20:9 (last part); Malachi 4:1, 3.

"Satan rushes into the midst of his followers and tries to stir up the multitude to
action. But fire from God out of heaven is rained upon them, and the great men, and
mighty men, the noble, the poor and miserable, are all consumed together. I saw that
some were quickly destroyed, while others suffered longer. They were punished ac-
cording to the deeds done in the body. Some were many days consuming, and just as
long as there was a portion of them unconsumed, all the sense of suffering remained."
-Early Writings, p. 294.
"The sins of the righteous having been transferred to Satan, he is made to suffer
not only for his own rebellion, but for all the sins which he has caused God's people to
commit. His punIshment is to be far greater than that of those whom he has deceived.
After all have perished who fell by his deceptions, he is still to live and suffer on. In
the cleansing flames the wicked are at last destroyed, root and branch-Satan the
root, his followers the branches."- The Great Controversy, p. 673.

long pilgrims and wanderers, shall find a home."-The Great Controversy. p. 675.

rinthians 2:9, 10.

"The prophets to whom these great scenes were revealed [of the things to come
in the earth made new] longed to understand their full import. They 'inquired and
searched diligently: ... searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ
which was in them did signify.... Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto them-
selves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you.' 1
Peter 1:10-12.

- 45-
"To us who are standing on the very verge of their fulfillment, of what deep mo-

a level, extensive plain. God's entire universe was clean, and the great controversy was
forever ended."-Early Writings, p. 295.

the capital city? Isaiah 65:17, 21, 22; Revelation 21:2.

"There is no disappointment, no sorrow, no sin, no one who shall say, I am sick;
there are no burial trains, no mourning, no death, no partings, no broken hearts; but

them? Isaiah 11:6, 7, 9.

"Then we entered a field full of all kinds of beasts-the lion, the lamb, the leopard,
and the wolf, all together in perfect union. We passed through the midst of them, and

- 46-
they followed on peaceably after. Then we entered a wood, not like the dark woods
we have here; no, no; but light, and all over glorious; the branches of the trees moved
to and fro, and we all cried out, 'We will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the
woods.' We passed through the woods, for we were on our way to Mount Zion." -Early
Writings, p. 18.

21:7.

"Weare homeward bound. He who loved us so much as to die for us hath builded
for us a city. The New Jerusalem is our place of rest. There will be no sadness in the
city of God. No wail of sorrow, no dirge of crushed hopes and buried affections, will
evermore be heard. Soon the garments of heaviness will be changed for the wedding
garment. Soon we shall witness the coronation of our King. Those whose lives have
been hidden with Christ, those who on the earth have fought the good fight of faith,
will shine forth with the Redeemer's glory in the kingdom of God.
"It will not be long till we shall see Him in whom our hopes of eternal life are
centered. And in His presence, all the trials and sufferings of this life will be as
nothingness. 'Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense
of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye
might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come,
and will not tarry.' Hebrews 10:35-37. Look up, look up, and let your faith continually
increase. Let this faith guide you along the narrow path that leads through the gates
of the city of God into the great beyond, the wide, unbounded future of glory that is
for the redeemed."-Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 287, 288.

10. How will the redeemed use vocal music to express their happiness? Revela-

"The prophet [Isaiah] caught the sound of music there, and song, such music and
song as, save in the visions of God, no mortal ear has heard or mind conceived. 'The
ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy
upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee
away.' 'Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of mel-
ody.' 'As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there.' 'They shall lift
up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the Lord.' Isaiah 35:10; 51:3; Psalm
87:7; Isaiah 24: 14."-Prophets and Kings, p. 730.
