READING SKILLS FOR RESEARCH
ACADEMIC YEAR 2018/19

Taught postgraduate students in the Arts & Humanities frequently encounter texts in a foreign
language, both academic and non-academic, related to their studies or research. Whilst English
currently remains the language of publication for the majority of academic texts, there is an
important body of work published in other languages, especially French and German.

To support MA students in their studies, and for their potential future research, Durham University
offers 4 bespoke credit bearing modules in developing Reading Skills for Research in foreign
languages

MELA10030 German Reading Skills for 30 Assumes no prior study of German, or
Research 1 limited prior knowledge
MELA10130 French Reading Skills for 30 Assumes no prior study of French, or
Research 1 limited prior knowledge
MELA10230 German Reading Skills for 30 Assumes prior knowledge of German
Research 2 equivalent to a UK AS level or level B1
of the Common European Framework
(CEFR)
MELA10330 French Reading Skills for 30 Assumes prior knowledge of French
Research 2 equivalent to a UK AS level or level B1
of the Common European Framework
(CEFR)

These modules may be especially attractive to MA students of Archaeology, Classics & Ancient
History, English Studies, History, Philosophy, Theology & Religion and Music.
