M o r e i m p l i c i t i d e o l o g i c a l shifts a r e r e v e a l e d b y t h e p i c t o r i a l
stvles o f t h e two e d i t i o n s o f Dan McDougall and the Bulldozer i n
the r e p r e s e n t a t i o n o f t h e l a n d s c a p e , t h e a r c h i t e c t u r e , a n d t h e
c h a r a c t e r s . T h e p i c t o r i a l style o f t h e î g b o s e d i t i o n s uses flat
c o l o u r a n d s i m p l e l i n e d r a w i n g . T h e r e is l i t t l e a t t e m p t to suggest
a n i l l u s i o n i s t i c s p a c e a n d t h e figures a r e g i v e n a c a r t o o n - l i k e
t r e a t m e n t . Dan McDougall and the Bulldozer ( 1963) also d e p i c t s
some fairly o b v i o u s i c o n i c m a r k e r s o f A u s t r a l i a n n e s s (kangaroos,
koalas, a n d a b o r i g i n e s ) i n a n o t h e r w i s e n o n - s p e c i f i c l a n d s c a p e .
T h e t h r e e A b o r i g i n a l figures w h o g r e e t D a n a n d D o z e r o n t h e i r
r e t u r n to t h e b u s h a r e n o t m e n t i o n e d i n t h e text. I n t h e p i c t u r e ,
they r e c e i v e s t e r e o t y p i c a l r e p r e s e n t a t i o n ( n a k e d a n d c a r r y i n g
s p e a r s ) , a n d they a p p e a r as a p a r t o f t h e l a n d s c a p e . ( I n t h e 1 9 8 7
e d i t i o n they a r e r e p l a c e d by t h r e e d a i r y c o w s — a c u r i o u s effect,
w h e r e b y p o l i t i c a l l y i n c o r r e c t i l l u s t r a t i o n is r e m o v e d , b u t w h i c h
t h e n r e m i n d s us h o w A b o r i g i n e s a r e effaced f r o m s u c h t e x t s ) .
T h e s e i c o n i c features c o n n o t e a n i m a g e o f " A u s t r a l i a " as a g e n e r -
a l i z e d c o n c e p t — l a c k i n g i n p a r t i c u l a r i t y . T h e p i c t o r i a l style o f
the 1987 e d i t i o n is m o r e n a t u r a l i s t i c . T h e i l l u s t r a t o r uses n a t u -
ralistic p e r s p e c t i v e , a n i m a l s a n d p l a n t s a p p e a r i n d e t a i l , a n d
t h e r e is a w i d e r a n g e o f types o f p l a n t s , a n i m a l s , a n d b i r d s . T h e
" A u s t r a l i a n " features a r e a m o r e i n t e g r a l p a r t o f t h e p i c t o r i a l
design a n d are m o r e p a r t i c u l a r i z e d . I a m n o t suggesting that the
p i c t o r i a l style o f t h e 1 9 8 7 e d i t i o n o f Dan McDougall and the
Bulldozer is d o i n g a n y t h i n g new, n o r t h a t t h e 1 9 6 3 e d i t i o n is a l l
that o u t d a t e d i n its style. T h e t o k e n i s m o f t h e 1 9 6 3 text is o f
c o u r s e still p r e v a l e n t i n c o n t e m p o r a r y p i c t u r e b o o k s — f o r e x a m -
p l e v e g e m i t e s a n d w i c h e s , p a v l o v a , a n d l a m i n g t o n s i n Possum
Magic ( 1 9 8 9 ) . A n d n a t u r a l i s m was also u s e d i n e a r l i e r t e x t s —
stylistically, t h e 1 9 8 7 e d i t i o n o f Dan McDougall is s i m i l a r to Shy the
Platypus ( 1 9 4 5 ) . H o w e v e r , t h e p i c t o r i a l styles u s e d i n these re-
e d i t i o n s o f P e n d e r ' s w o r k d o s h o w h o w n a t u r a l i s m has b e c o m e a
d o m i n a n t a n d privileged m o d e for representing the country o r
b u s h l a n d s c a p e a n d f o r r e p r e s e n t i n g t h e past. B y c o n t r a s t , w h e r e
