Structure of sodium chloride. It is shown the cubic geometry

of this mineral. In this example, it is easy to see one sodium ion (at top right
back corner of blue cube) surrounded by six chloride ions (Ions are
not drawn to scale, from Press & Siever 2000 and Grotzinger et al. 2007).

Perfect crystals. A
perfect crystal is rare, but
no matter how irregular the
shapes of the faces may be,
the angles are always
exactly the same. (a)
Halite, a cubic crystal:
sample of crystals and
structural diagram. (b)
Quartz, a hexagonal
crystal: sample of a nearly
perfect crystal and
structural diagrams. The
cross section at right angles
to the long dimension of the
crystal shows a regular
hexagon with “a” faces at
120º angles (from Press &
Siever 2000).

The relative sizes of sodium and chloride ions allow them to

pack together in a cubic structure. Ions here are shown in their correct
relative sizes (from Press & Siever 2000). Geología General, S. Rosas

Sizes of ions as they are commonly found in
rock-forming minerals. Ionic radii are given
in 10-8 cm (from Grotzinger et al. 2007).

Silicate ion. (a) A model showing the structure of the silicon-oxygen
tetrahedron. In the center of this model is one silicon ion carrying a positive
charge of 4. It is surrounded by four oxygen ions, each carrying a minus
charge of 2. After bonding, the resulting silicate ion carries a negative charge
of 4 (4 minus 8 equals – 4). (b) A more realistic model of the silicate ion with
the atoms drawn to scale and filling space (from Press & Siever 2000).

The crystal structures of silicate minerals, which are classified according to
the different ways in which silica tetrahedra can be linked: (a) isolated tetrahedra
(example: olivine); (b) single chains (example: pyroxene); (c) double chains
(example amphibole); (d) sheets (example: mica) (from Press & Siever 2000).

Acid test. One easy but effective way to iddentify certain minerals is to drop diluted
hydrochloric acid (HCl) on the substance. If it fizzes, indicating the escape of carbon
dioxide, the mineral is likely to be calcite (from Grotzinger et al. 2007). Geología General, S. Rosas

Cleavage of mica. The diagram shows the cleavage planes in the mineral structure,
oriented perpendicularly to the plane of the page. Horizontal lines mark the interfaces of
silica-oxygen tetrahedral sheets and sheets of aluminium hydroxide bonding the two
tetrahedral layers into a “sandwich”. Cleavage takes place between composite tetrahedral-
aluminium hydroxide sandwiches. The photograph shows thin sheets separating along the
cleavage planes (from Grotzinger et al 2007). Geología General, S. Rosas
