◎ PRINCIPLE
The infrared energy emitted from the measured object is converted into an electrical signal by
the imaging sensor (microbolometer) and displayed as a color or black & white thermal image.
The measuring principle is explained next.

<What is an infrared ray?>

The infrared ray is a form of an electromagnetic wave as well as a visual light or a radio wave.
The wavelength band is 0.78 to 1000[μm] that is longer than visual light yet shorter than radio
wave, and the wavelengths are classified from the near infrared to the far infrared region.
However, it shall be considered as various classifications have been proposed.
The infrared ray is also energy radiated by motions of atoms and molecules on the surface of
object, in case the temperature of the object is more than absolute zero degree.

<Blackbody radiation>
Blackbody is an object which absorbs all the incident energy and the radiant intensity becomes
maximum at full wavelengths and temperatures.
In a blackbody, Absorptance α equals Emissivity ε, and α = ε = 1.
Practical existing object is not like this, but it is described with transmittance τ and refrectance ρ
as follows,
α+ρ+τ=1
Energy radiated from the blackbody is described as follows and called “Plank’s law”.

c1
Wλ = ...( 1 )
⎧ ⎛ c2 ⎞ ⎫
λ 5 ⎨ exp ⎜ ⎟ − 1⎬
⎩ ⎝ λT ⎠ ⎭
In order to obtain whole radiant emittance of the blackbody, integrate the equation (1) through
the full the full wavelengths (0 to infinity). The result is as follows and called
“Stefan-Bolzmann’s equation”.

W = σT 4 ...( 2 )
The temperature of blackbody can be obtained directly from the radiant energy of blackbody by
this equation. In order to find out the wavelength on the maximum spectral radiant emittance,
differentiate lank’s law and make the value to 0.

λ mT = 2897 .8[ μ m ⋅ K] ...( 3)

This equation is called “Wien’s displacement law”.

Where in above (1) to (3),

Wλ : S pectral radiant emittance per unit wavelength and unit area

λm : Wavelength of maximum spectral radiant emittance [ μ m ]
λ : Wavelength [ μ m ]
h : Plank’s constant = 6 . 6 2 6 1 × 1 0 - 3 4 [ W · s 2 ]

Chapter 7 Appendix

In radiation of normal object, as the emissivity is ε (<1) times of the blackbody, multiply above
equation by ε. Following Fig. 7.2 is spectral radiant emittance of a blackbody.
(a) is shown by logarithmic scale and (b) is shown by linear scale.
Spectral radiant emittance

Spectral radiant emittance

Fig. 7.2 Spectral radiant emittance of a blackbody

The graphs in Fig. 7.2 shows that wavelength and spectral radiant emittance vary with the
temperature.
Fig. 7.2 shows, as the temperature rises, the peak of spectral radiant emittance is shifting to
shorter wavelength side. This phenomenon is some in the visual light region, an object at low
temperature appears red, and as the temperature increases, it changes to yellowish and then
whitish color.

Chapter 7 Appendix

<Blackbody type source and emissivity>

Although a blackbody is actually only a theoretical ideal, an object can be formed which
approximates it. A law closely related to the blackbody is Kirchhoff's law that defines reflection,
transmission, absorption and radiation.

α +ρ+ τ =1
where, α : absorptance
( = ε : emissivity)
ρ: reflectance
τ : transmittance

Also, absorptance equals emissivity, and so emissivity can be described by reflectance and
transmittance.
In order to obtain a true temperature of an object, it is necessary to obtain the emissivity
correctly. Therefore, the emissivity of the object has to be measured by using of blackbody-type
source which is nearest to a blackbody as much as possible. So it is necessary to design a
blackbody-type source.
The blackbody-type source can be designed to meet the conditions pointed out by Kirchoff that
“the radiation within an isothermal enclosure is a blackbody radiation”. As a blackbody-type
source for a measurement must radiate outside of the enclosed surface, a small hole is cut
through the wall of the enclosure not to disturb the condition of blackbody. The radiation
leaving this hole should closely simulate that from a blackbody. When the diameter of the hole
is as 2r and the depth is as L, if L/r is equal or more than 6, it is used as a blackbody –type
source for practical use.
Following Fig. 7.3 is an example of a blackbody-type source according to conditions of
blackbody.

Uniform temperature

Ideal blackbody Blackbody-type source

Fig.7.3 Example of blackbody-type source
(The larger L/r ratio closer to a blackbody)

Emissivity is the ratio of energy radiated from an object to the exterior and energy radiated from
blackbody. The emissivity varies with the surface condition of the object and also with
temperature variation and wavelength. If this value is not accurate, then the true temperature
95691-2935-0000

8-4
Chapter 7 Appendix

cannot be measured. In other words, a variation or change in emissivity will cause a change in
the indications on the Thermo Gear.

To approach the true temperature therefore,

(1)The emissivity must approximate 1. (→ The measured object must be nearly a blackbody.)
(2)The emissivity must be corrected. (→ The emissivity of the measured object must
approximate to 1 by way of calculation.)
Therefore, in order to perform correct measurement for true temperature, the emissivity is
determined as follows,

1) Check by way of literature

Various literature carries a physical constants list, but if the measuring condition at that time is
not satisfied, the constants will not be usable. In such case the literature should be used only for
reference.

2) Determination by ratio (1)

Confirm that the measured object in thermal equilibrium and the blackbody-type source is at the
same temperature by using a contact-type thermometer. Then measure the object and the
blackbody-type source with the radiation thermometer, and the energy ratio at that time will give
the emissivity.
EK : ES = 1 : X….. (5)
EK : energy of blackbody-type source
ES: energy of measured object
X: emissivity of measured object
*Indicated here is the ratio, not the temperature.

3) Determination by ratio (2)

Attach an object resembling a blackbody (blackbody part) to a heater, unify the temperatures of
the measuring object and the blackbody part, and obtain the ratio of infrared radiation energies
at that time. [* Same as in 2) above]

4) Comparison with blackbody surface

Make a very small hole in the measured object to satisfy the aforementioned blackbody
conditions, and make the temperature of the entire object uniform. Then, using the emissivity
correcting function of Thermo Gear, reduce the emissivity until the temperature of the point to
be measured equals the temperature of the small hole measured at an emissivity of 1.The
emissivity setting should be the emissivity of the object. (This applies only when the conditions
are the same as at measurement.)

Chapter 7 Appendix

5) Comparison with blackbody surface

If a small hole cannot be made in the object, then the emissivity can be obtained by applying
black paint to the object and reaching a thermal equilibrium through similar procedures. But
since the painted object will not provide a complete blackbody, first set the emissivity of the
painted object and then measure the temperature. Following Fig. 6.1 shows examples of
blackbody paint.

CAUTION
· As the heat-resistive paint (black) contains an organic solvent, please follow the operation
manual of the manufacturer for the handling.

Comment s )
· Measuring wavelength of G100/G120 series is 8 to 14 [μm].

7.1.4 Background noise

What to be careful in measuring a temperature of an object by a radiation thermometer is not
only above mentioned emissivity correction but also measuring environment conditions.
Infrared rays enter into the Thermo Tracer from not only measuring object but also the other.
Therefore, in order to avoid from this influence, function of environment reflection correction,
etc. is required. Also, when an accurate data is required, it is necessary to minimize the
influence such as shortening the transmission route of infrared day.

Following methods may be considered to remove the background noise.

(1) To shorten distance between a measuring object and the incident window of the Thermo
Tracer as much as possible. However it is necessary to keep safety distance for
measuring person.

(2) To be no high temperature object behind the measuring object.

Examples,
· No high temperature object such as the sun exists behind.
· Change position of measuring person within safety range.

(3) Not to get direct sunlight in the Thermo Tracer.

(4) Not to put obstacles such as dust or vapor which attenuates infrared radiation (signal)
between the measuring object and the incident window of the Thermo Tracer.

◎ PRACTICAL MEASUREMENT
There are a number of methods for correcting emissivity in order to obtain the true temperature.
The correction procedure with each method will be explained next. But note that this procedure
is unnecessary when the emissivity is already known. Set the Thermo Gear for emissivity
correction and carry out measurement directly.

(1) Method of comparison or direct measurement with emissivity at nearly 1

[1] Unify the temperatures of the measured object or similar material.
[2] Open a very small hole (hereafter called blackbody part) in the object which the Thermo
Gear can detect so as to satisfy the blackbody conditions.
[3] Then set the emissivity correcting function of Thermo Gear so the temperature of the
blackbody part and the measured surface will be the same. The obtained emissivity will
be the emissivity of the measured surface.
[4] Thereafter when measuring found the same conditions, it is unnecessary to change the
emissivity setting.

(2) Method of direct measurement of emissivity

If a hole cannot be made as in [1], then apply black paint or the like and carry out the same
procedures to obtain the emissivity. But since the black paint will not provide a perfect
blackbody, first set the emissivity of the black paint and then measure the temperature.
(Refer to Fig. 7.1 Examples of blackbody paint)

(3) Indirect measurement

Make a sample similar to the measured object, and place it in a condition able to be heated by a
heater, etc. Then measure the object and the sample alternately with the Thermo Tracer and
when the indicated values are identical, measure the sample with a contact-type thermometer.
This enables measuring the temperature indirectly.

(4) Measuring by Wedge effect

With this method, the emissivity of the measured surface itself is enhanced through use of the
wedge or semi-wedge effect. But one must be careful about the number of reflections and/or the
measuring angle.
