Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Direct Digitizer REGIUS SIGMA2 (called "this device" hereinafter).
This device reads exposed X-ray image data saved to a plate within a cassette, then outputs it as diag-
nosis image data to the connected console.
In order to operate this device, a medical image processing workstation called the ImagePilot is required
as a console. The ImagePilot is sold separately. Additionally, the cassette and plate dedicated to this de-
vice must be used.
General X-ray images are the intended diagnostic images of this device. Mammographic images are not
included.
This manual covers cautions to be observed during usage, device operation methods, and cassette/plate
handling methods. Make sure to obtain a thorough understanding of the content within this manual, and
the ImagePilot operation manual, before using this device. Even after reading through this manual, keep
it stored near the device for reference to ensure that the device is used at maximum efficiency.
*If this manual becomes illegible due to wear and tear, replace it with a new one. (fee required)
1) Medical purposes
• Provision of images for diagnosis of disease and injury.
2) Patient groups
• No patients groups that operate or touch the device.
• No identification of patient groups of read X-ray images.
3) Parts of body or organizations to which the device is mounted or that contact with the device.
• No appropriate points.(Device does not come in contact with the patient.)
4) Operating principle
• Insert the REGIUS cassette (hereinafter called the cassette) with a REGIUS plate (hereinafter
called the plate) inside which latent images were formed by X-ray exposure.
• The plate is pulled out from the opened tray, and while conveying the plate, scan the excitation la-
ser to the plate.
• Photostimulated luminescence emitted from the plate by the excitation laser is focused and detect-
ed, and detected signals are digitized and output as image data.
• By applying erase light to the plate scanned by the excitation laser, remaining latent images will be
erased.
• The plate is reloaded, which had its latent images erased, into the cassette. Take the cassette out
from the insertion slot.
5) Significant physical characteristics
• Refer to " Specification"(p. 68) in the Appendix.
6) Significant performance characteristics
• Refer to " Specification"(p. 68) in the Appendix.
7) User of this device
• There is no need for special training for using this device. This device is intended for the following users:
Healthy technicians of sound body who fully understand the information contained in this manual
and have specialized knowledge and a license (e.g., doctors or radiological technologists).

Guidance and manufacture’s declaration - electromagnetic immunity
The unit is intended for use in the electromagnetic environment specified below.
The customer or the user of the unit should assure that it is used in such an environment.
IEC 60601 Compliance
Immunity test Electromagnetic environment - guidance

Portable and mobile RF communications
equipment should be used no closer to any
part of the unit, including cables, than the
recommended separation distance calculated
from the equation applicable to the frequency
of the transmitter.
[NOTE] At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the higher frequency range applies.
[NOTE] These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by absorption and
reflection from structures, objects and people.
a Field strengths from fixed transmitters, such as base stations for radio (cellular/cordless) telephones and land mo-
bile radios, amateur radio, AM and FM radio broadcast and TV broadcast cannot be predicted theoretically with
accuracy. To assess the electromagnetic environment due to fixed RF transmitters, an electromagnetic site survey
should be considered. If the measured field strength in the location in which the unit is used execeeds the appli-
cable RF compliance level above, the unit should be observed to verify normal operation. If abnormal performance
is observed, additional measures may necessary, such as reorienting or relocation the unit.
b Over the frequency range 150 kHz to 80 MHz, field strength should be less than [3] V/m.
15
1.2 Safety Precautions
CAUTION
(10) EMC Statement
Recommended separation distance between portable and mobile RF communications equipment and the
unit.
The unit is intended for use in and electromagnetic environment in which radiated RF disturbances are controlled. The
customer or the user of the unit can help prevent electromagnetic interference by maintaining a minimum distance
between portable and mobile RF communications equipment (transmitters) and the unit as recommended below, ac-
cording to the maximum output power of the communications equipment.
Separation distance according to frequency of transmitter

For transmitters rated at a maximum output power not listed above, the recommended separation distance d in me-
tres (m) can be estimated using the equation applicable to the frequency of the transmitter, where P is the maximum
output power rating of the transmitter in watts (W) according to the transmitter manufacturer.
[NOTE] At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the separation distance for the higher frequency range applies.
[NOTE] These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by absorption and
reflection from structures, objects and people.

2.1 Device Summary
An explanation of the device's functions and features, along with system configuration examples using this device.
This device (a reader) is used for reading X-ray image data taken on an exclusive plate.
The exclusive plate is bent like film, and this device reads images from it as they are fed in. Therefore, this device is
miniaturized so that it can be installed on a table.
Receiving and all setting conditions for read image data is performed by a console called the "ImagePilot," which is
sold separately.
CAUTION
• This device can only use an exclusive cassette and plate combination. The cassette and plate are designed specifically for
use with this device, so they cannot be used with other readers.

• If the cassette's shape is altered due to being dropped etc., this may cause problems to exposed images, so immediately
stop using it and replace it with a new cassette.

Make sure a plate is not loaded in the cassette, then perform the following steps to make sure there is no dust or debris
inside.
-- Open the tray, place the tray's opening face down, then lightly tap the cassette to remove any dust or debris.
-- Use a vacuum, etc. to suck out any dust or debris that might remain inside the tray's opening.
Perform a test exposure after cleaning, and if a diagnosis problem occurs, immediately stop using it and replace it with a
new one.
• If scratches, dirt, altered shape, discoloration, reduction in sensitivity, etc. lead to a reduction in diagnosis image quality,
or interfere with device operation, immediately stop using it and replace it with a new one.

5.1 Troubleshooting
IMPORTANT
• If a problem occurs during the image read process, reexposure of the image is required after discarding it and performing
the image erase process for the plate.
If a warning or error occurs for this device, the Error Lamp (yellow) will light up or start blinking. Also, a message will
be displayed on the ImagePilot.
Messages will either be displayed in the center of the screen, or on the task tray.
Check the following for reference, and take appropriate action.
If taking measures as described here does not solve the problem, contact Konica Minolta technical representatives.

5.2 Dealing with Plate Jams
If a plate jam occurs, check the plate status inside the device as outlined in "5.2.1 Check the Plate Status (Do This
First)"(p. 53), then remove it according to any of the following procedures:
• “5.2.2 If the Plate is Not Visible From the Top Door’s Opening”(p. 54)

• “5.2.5 If the Plate’s Mid-section is the Only Portion Visible From the Top Door’s Opening”(p. 58).
After removing the plate, check its condition. If its shape has been altered, replace it with a new one
If there are no problems, load it in the cassette and perform the image erase process.
CAUTION
• Make sure to perform this process with clean hands, so as not to get the plate, guide, roller, etc. dirty inside of the device.
• Do not touch the yellow filter inside of this device.
• Do not let foreign objects, dust or debris get inside of the device.
