The Association's chief aim is to help its members to improve the efficiency and quality of their work. CIRIA identifies the needs ofits members and initiates and manages projects designed to rect these needs. The areas covered at present include: structural design: civil engineering construction: building design and construction; earthworks and foundations: underground construction: hydraulic and public health engineering: offshore engineering and underwater technology. ‘The Association is controlled by its members through an elected Council which is advised by Finance and Research Committees. Six Sectional Committees, which together represent the full range of the technical interests of members, are responsible for preparing and supervising the programme of work undertaken. Membership is open to professional practices, firms, civil engineering and building contractors, local authorities, regional water authorities. public utilities and other bodies concerned with construction or underwater engineering. ‘The Association has an Underwater Engineering Group (UEG) which deals with work in the rapidly expanding area of offshore engineering, The Group has its own membership and is controlled by its own elected committee, but itis otherwise a part of the CIRIA organisation ‘The Piling Development Group was set up with financial support from the Property Services, Agency of the Department of the Environment. end the Building Research Establishment is, sharing the cost of the research programme. Structural action in box girders Construction Industry Research and Information Association Guide 3, April 1977 ‘A discussion of linear elastic analysis of box girders shows how it can be used t0 determine shear lag, torsional warping, stresses due to distortion, stresses in multi-box systems, and the limits of elastic behaviour. ‘Next, elastic buckling and post-buckling of plates, caused by longitudinal ‘compression and shear, are dealt with. The determination of buckling strength of panels and webs stiffened by flange plates is explained. ‘Stress distribution in bearing diaphragms is discussed, and the reasons for failure are siven, Secondary stresses caused by interaction between flanges and diaphragms, and due to restraint of warping, are explained. The effect of imperfections and residual welding stresses is discussed. Finally, general considerations in applying structural analysis to design in relation to the Merrison Rules are presented.
