What is IELTS?
• The International English Language Testing System
• Measures the language proficiency of people who want study or work where
English is the primary language
• Candidates receive a score for each skill and then all 4 are added up for the final
score (with Reading weighted the most and Speaking weighted the least)
• Accepted by over 9,000 organisations worldwide, more than 600 of which are in
the UK, and an approved language test for UK citizenship and visa purposes
• IELTS tests can now be taken at over 1,100 locations worldwide and 100+ locations
across the UK
• Expansion of testing network follows rise in demand for secure English language
tests for higher education and global migration
• In 2014, 76% of candidates took the Academic IELTS test, and 24% General IELTS -
the Academic version of the exam is required for university entry
• Average scores of level 6 for Academic range (Timesavers are carefully levelled at
5.5 to 7.5)
• IELTS Starter: ‘entry’ level material for lower level students who are preparing for
the IELTS exam – they need a score of 5 to gain entry into a UK course
