La nueva ruralidad en America Latina

C ONLAGLOBALIZACION,
LAStransformacionesdel campo lati-
noamericano son tan profundas que no solamente hay que
hablar de cambio, sino de transicion de una sociedad
agraria organizada en torno a la actividad primaria hacia una so-
ciedad rural mas diversificada.1 La relaci6n campo-ciudad es ahora
mucho mas compleja que la vieja relaci6n dicot6mica, caracte-
rizada por el intercambio desigual y la migraci6n de los pobres del
campo hacia las ciudades para conformar el ejercito industrial de
reserva. La conceptualizacion de lo rural, como espacio ocupado por
grupos sociales relacionados con la producci6n agropecuaria, en
contraste con lo urbano como espacio ocupado por grupos sociales
relacionados con la industria y los servicios, ya no tiene valor expli-
cativo en el marco de la globalizaci6n del capital (Garcia Bartolome,
1996). La vida rural, tradicionalmente asociada con la actividad
agropecuaria, abriga ahora una diversidad de actividades y rela-
ciones sociales que vinculan estrechamente las aldeas campesinas
con los centros urbanos y la actividad industrial. Ahora el campo no
puede pensarse sectorialmente, s6lo en funci6n de la actividad
agropecuaria y forestal, sino que debe tomar en cuenta las demas

Todo parece indicar que este concepto es en especial una forma
distinta de percibir los espacios rurales y sus problemas contempo-
raneos, y no necesariamente la emergencia de nuevos fen6menos
(Riellay Romero,2003:157).
