1. Explain the processes below using the information in the diagrams.

Process Explanation
Simple diffusion
(diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide gas
between blood capillary and alveolus)

Facilitated diffusion
2
(absorption of glucose and amino acids in small
intestine)

Active transport and osmosis

(absorption of water and minerals by root hairs of
a plant)

2. Compare and contrast passive transport and active transport in human body.

Passive transport Similarities Active transport

Passive transport Differences Active transport

Concentration gradient

Cellular energy

Outcomes of the process

Takes place in living organism Location Only takes place in living cells.
and non-living physical
conditions.

3. There are three types of solution on plant and animal cells.

a) Hypotonic solution: a solution in which [solute] outside the cell < [solute] inside the cell
b) Isotonic solution: a solution in which [solute] outside the cell = [solute] inside the cell
c) Hypertonic solution: a solution in which [solute] outside the cell > [solute] inside the cell

Based on diagram below, explain what would happen to an animal cell and a plant cell when
immersed in different types of solution.

Normal size 4

Please use the keywords (KW) in the table to help you explain.
(KW: equal rate, maintain normal Isotonic solution (KW: equal rate, maintain normal
size) size)

(KW: osmosis, expand, burst, Hypotonic solution (KW: osmosis, vacuole, cytoplasm,
haemolysis) cell wall, cell turgid)

(KW: osmosis, shrink, crenation) Hypertonic solution (KW: osmosis, vacuole, cytoplasm,
flaccid, plasmolysis)
