20th Senate Meeting Minutes


August 4th, 2010

1. Called to order at 2:00 pm.

a. Senator Abbott- absent

3. Additions or Corrections to Agenda
a. None
4. Approval of Minutes
a. Passed 7-0-0
5. Executive Reports
a. Senator Muniz asked if we could have a brief update from the executive members.
b. President O’Lennick
i. Retreat- Working on finalizing the agenda and team building activities.
ii. Attended the all Student Government Council- discussed what should be done
with the Bookie Revenue Account and how it should be distributed among the
four campuses.
iii. Health Services- Met with Vice Chancellor Youlden and Assistant Dean of
Nursing Dr. Guido to talk about what they can do together in working towards
having health services on campus.
c. Director of Activities- Shavey Winter
i. Has been working on organizing trips to Pullman for upcoming football
games. First trip will be September 10th -12th.
ii. Welcome back barbeque will be September 1st & 2nd, 11:00-2:00.
iii. Outdoor concert on August 27th in the amphitheater 6:00-8:00. She needs
volunteers to help with multiple tasks.
d. Event Assistant- Nadia Mousleh
i. Has been working on planning the bowling nights. First bowl night will be
September 9th.
ii. Is in the process of planning a beach trip that will take place on
September18th.
e. Director of Public Relations- Meg Bartosovsky
i. Finished getting the logos and advertisements done for the water bottles and
ROAR
ii. Working on the finishing touches to the ASWSUV news letter which should
be distributed this month.
f. Public Relations Assistant- Jeb Bradwell
i. Has been busy this summer getting all of the needed updates done for the
computers in the senate and executive branch offices

 
 

ii. Also working on organizing and updating the ASWSUV Website.


g. Director of Academic Affairs- Audrey Miller
i. Work on creating a survey for student about advising. Hopes to find what
improvements can be made to advising.
h. Director of Legislative Affairs- Max Ault
i. Attended a town meeting where Governor Gregoire was present. He was able
to testify about higher education’s needs.
ii. Working on establishing connections with local representatives. Has been able
to do much as it is an election year.
6. New Business
a. Senatorial Confirmation # 1
i. Robert Miller

ii. Amanda Washington
1. High school’s newspaper editor and mentor for freshmen students.
Currently volunteering at a health clinic.
a. Senator Guzman asked her how she would deal with being
misquoted.
b. Washington stated she would meet with the person about being
misquoted and see proper actions are taken.
c. Senator Smith asked what did she learned from being a mentor
which would help her as a senator.
d. Washington stated she learned how to help people find answers
to their questions.
iii. Jenna Nelmark
1. She is a freshman this year. She was actively involved with dance
team and freshman mentoring in high school.
a. Senator Smith asked what did she learned from being a mentor
which would help her as a senator.
b. Nelmark stated she learned how to manage her time. A big
challenge was keeping students involved.
c. Senator Guzman asked how she would correct a mistake she
had made.
d. Nelmark stated she wrote an apology letter to the committee.
iv. Jenna Nelmark was voted in with a vote of 2-2-3
e. Senatorial Confirmation # 2
v. Larsson Gepford
1. He was actively involved with many clubs while attending Clark
College.
a. Senator Bruckner asked him what worked well for getting
students involved at Clark College.
b. Gepford stated what worked best for him was being friendly
and outgoing. Clark College did not have as many activities as
WSUV.
c. Senator Guzman asked him what improvements in student life
would he like to see happen.

 
 

d. Gepford stated he would like to see the ASWSUV Website to


have more information about events on and off campus.
e. Senator Won asked him what his strengths and weaknesses are.
f. Gepford stated his weakness is talking in front of people. He is
a punctual person.

vii. Amanda Washington
a. Senator Nelmark asked her what her strengths and weaknesses
are.
b. Washington stated her weakness is she has a soft voice and her
strength is her ability to work with others.
c. Senator Bruckner asked what she learned from an experience
when the plan fell through.
d. Washington stated she learned to ask for help and not to take
on so much.
viii. The senate vote came to a tie of 4-0-4.
ix. Vice President Moore broke the tie by selecting Amanda Washington.

x. Alexander Cady
1. He was involved with wrestling and the freshmen mentoring program
in high school.
a. Senator Bruckner asked how he would determine if the money
was going to be well spent.
b. Cady stated by seeing how well the event was planned and
thought out.
c. Senator Muniz asked him which events he had attended.
d. Cady stated that he attended some of the bowling nights.
e. Senator Guzman asked him what his strengths and weaknesses
are.
f. Cady stated that his strength is his ability to remain claim in
stressful situations.
g. Senator Smith asked him if there was a challenge he faced as a
mentor.
h. Cady stated getting students to participate in activities.

xii. Larsson Gepford
a. Senator Bruckner asked him how he would deal with a person
who had conflicting views.
b. Gepford stated he would debate the matter respectfully.
xiii. Larsson Gepford was voted in with a vote of 2-0-7.
g. Judicial Board Confirmation

 
 

xiv. Jes Dimas


1. He has served as a club president and worked for Coug Radio.
a. Senator Guzman asked him how he would get the Judicial
Board active.
b. Dimas stated he is a proactive kind of person and would use
this resource to get others involved.
c. Senator Gepford asked him what his strengths and weaknesses
are.
d. Dimas stated he is proactive, assertive and can remain
objective about conflicts.
e. Senator Muniz asked him how he deals with group conflict.
f. Dimas stated he stays clear of the group gossip and drama. He
had to be objective with his past work as a union grievance
investigator.
xv. Jes Dimas was confirmed to the Judicial Board with a vote of 10-0-0.
h. Magazines
xvi. The Campus Affairs Committee will be responsible for handling magazines
subscriptions.
7. Announcements
a. Strengths Finder will be the book used this year for leadership training at the retreat
and all student government trainings throughout the year.
b. The ASWSUV Retreat is August 6th-8th. Everyone needs to be here at 9:30 Friday
morning.
8. Recognitions
a. Senator Bruckner wanted to welcome the new senators.
b. Senator Guzman recognized Senator Muniz and Won for organizing a meeting.
9. For the Good of the Order
a. Jes Dimas mention there are many companies within the community who are willing
to offer student discounts.
b. It was determined the External Affairs Committee will follow up on this.
10. Meeting was adjourned at 3:10 pm.
