1. INTRODUCTION
One important aspect to build a building is to know the density of soil where the building
will be built. The sand cone apparatus is used to determine the density of any soil that can
be excavated to a stable condition with hand tools.

2. SCOPE AND PURPOSE

Sand Cone test method is commonly used to determine the density of compacted soil.
Sand cone test for PLTMG 20 MW, Langgur is done to all buildings.

3. PROCEDURES
3.1 Select a location that is representative of the area to be tested.
3.2 Seat the base plate in the surface, make sure there is contact with the ground surface.
Secure the plate against movement by using nails pushed into the soil adjacent to the
edge of the plate.

3.2 Dig the test hole through the center hole in the base plate, being careful to avoid
disturbing or deforming the soil that will bound the hole. Depth of the hole minimal
10 cm.

3.3 Weight the bottle cone with the sand (W1).

3.4 Clean the flange of the base plate hole, invert the sand cone apparatus and set the sand
cone funnel in to the flanged hole. Open the valve and allow the sand fill the hole,
funnel and base plate. When the sand stop flowing, close the valve.

3.5 Determine the mass of the residual sand and the bottle cone (W2).

3.6 Determine the mass of the moist soil material and can that was removed from the test

3.7 Determine the water content of the soil. Here is the steps:
1. Determine mass of can (W4)
2. Determine the mass of wet sample soil. Weight for wet sample soil is 1 kg (W5).
3. Dry the wet sample soil.
4. After that weight the dry sample soil (W6).

4. CALCULATION
4.1 Water Content
Determine weight of water (W7) = ( W5 – W6)/W5 x 100 %
W5 = weight of wet sample soil (gr)
W6 = weight of dry sample soil (gr)

4.2 Sand Cone Test

1. Weight of use sand (W8) = W1 – W2
W1 = weight of bottle cone + sand (gr)
W2 = weight of bottle cone + residual sand (gr)
2. Weight of sand on hole (W9) = W8 – Weight of sand on cone plate
W8 = weight of use sand (gr)
3. Gross Volume of Hole (cc)
W9

W9 = Weight of sand on hole
