1. INTRODUCTION & PLOT OF THE MOVIE: CHAK DE! INDIA

INTRODUCTION
Chak De! India is a 2007 Indian sports film, directed by Shimit Amin and
produced by Aditya Chopra, with a screenplay written by Jaideep Sahni, sports scenes
choreographed by Rob Miller, and music by Salim–Sulaiman.

It tells a fictional story about the Indian women's national field-hockey team,
which was inspired by the team's win at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and explores
themes such as feminism and sexism, the legacy of the partition of India, racial and
religious bigotry, and ethnic and regional prejudice.

The film stars Shahrukh Khan as Kabir Khan, former captain of the Indian men's
national field-hockey team. After a disastrous loss to Pakistan, Khan is ostracized from
the sport and he and his mother are driven from the family home by angry neighbours.
Seven years later, to redeem himself, Khan becomes the coach of the Indian national
women's hockey team and aims to turn its sixteen contentious players into a
championship unit.

Chak De! India won a number of awards, including the National Film Award for
Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. On 30 August 2007, the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences requested a copy of the film's script for a
place in its Margaret Herrick Library. When the Indian Hockey Federation was
reorganised in April 2008, former player Aslam Sher Khan said that he wanted "to
create a 'Chak De' effect" in Indian hockey. The film was screened in New Delhi on 17
August 2016, as part of the week long Independence Day Film Festival. The festival was
jointly presented by the Indian Directorate of Film Festivals and Ministry of Defence,
commemorating India's 70th Independence Day.

Chak De! India premiered on 9 August 2007 at Somerset House in London to an

audience of over 2,000 during the Film4 Summer Screen and India Now festivals. It was
released globally in theatres on 10 August 2007, playing on only 400 screens in India
because of the commercial failure of Yash Raj Film's two previous films.

Due to the film's strong critical response, theatres reported 80-percent

occupancy for its opening weekend. The Movie topped the Indian box office during its
first two weeks, and played to full houses during its first two months. The film was
particularly successful in large cities. By the end of its theatrical run Chak De! India was
the third-highest-grossing film of 2007 in India, with domestic earnings of Rs.
50,54,00,000.

PLOT

Chak De! India opens in Delhi during the final minutes of a Hockey World Cup
match between Pakistan and India, with Pakistan leading 1–0. When Indian team
captain Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) is fouled, he takes a penalty stroke. His shot just
misses, costing India the match. Soon afterwards, media outlets circulate a photograph
of Khan shaking hands with the Pakistani captain. The sporting gesture is
misunderstood, and the Muslim Khan is suspected of "throwing" the game out of
sympathy towards Pakistan. Religious prejudice forces him and his mother (Joyshree
Arora) from their family home.

Seven years later Mr. Tripathi (Anjan Srivastav), the head of India's hockey
association, meets with Khan's friend—and hockey advocate—Uttamaji (Mohit
Chauhan) to discuss the Indian women's hockey team. According to Tripathi, the team
has no future since the only long-term role for women is to "cook and clean". Uttamaji,
however, tells him that Kabir Khan (whom no one has seen for seven years) wants to
coach the team. Initially sceptical, Tripathi agrees to the arrangement.

Khan finds himself in charge of a group of 16 young women (each representing a

different state), divided by their competitive nature and regional prejudices. Komal
Chautala (Chitrashi Rawat), a village girl from Haryana, clashes with Preeti Sabarwal
(Sagarika Ghatge) from Chandigarh; short-tempered Balbir Kaur (Tanya Abrol) from
Punjab bullies Rani Dispotta (Seema Azmi) and Soimoi Kerketa (Nisha Nair), who are
from remote villages in Jharkhand. Mary Ralte (Kimi Laldawla) from Mizoram and Molly
Zimik (Masochon "Chon Chon" Zimik), from Manipur in North-East India, face
widespread racial discrimination and sexual harassment. Team captain Vidya Sharma
(Vidya Malvade) must choose between hockey and the wishes of her husband Rakesh's
(Nakul Vaid) family, and Preeti's fiancé—Abhimanyu Singh (Vivan Bhatena), vice-
captain of the India national cricket team—feels threatened by her involvement with
the team.

Khan realizes that he can make the girls winners only if he can help them
overcome their differences. During his first few days as coach his benches several
players who refuse to follow his rules—including Bindiya Naik (Shilpa Shukla), his most
experienced player. In response, Bindiya repeatedly encourages the other players to
defy Khan. When she finally succeeds, Khan angrily resigns; however, he invites the staff
and team to a farewell lunch at McDonald's. During the lunch, local boys make a pass at
Mary; Balbir attacks them, triggering a brawl between the boys and the team. Khan,
recognizing that they are acting as one for the first time, prevents the staff from
intervening; he only stops a man from hitting one of the women from behind with a
cricket bat, telling him that there are no cowards in hockey. In an about-face, after the
fight the women ask Khan to remain as their coach.

The team faces new challenges. When Tripathi refuses to send the women's team
to Australia for the World Cup, Khan proposes a match against the men’s team. Although
his team loses, their performance inspires Tripathi to send them to Australia after all.
Bindiya is upset with Khan for choosing Vidya over her as the Captain of the team. The
result sees a loss in the tournament with a 7-0 to Australia. When Khan confronts
Bindiya about her behaviour on the field, Bindiya responds by seducing Khan to which
he rejects her advances and asks her to stay away from the game. Khan goes on to train
the girls and again which is followed by victories over England, Spain, South Africa, New
Zealand, Argentina. Just before their game with Korea, Khan approaches Bindiya to go
back in the field and break the strategy of 'Man to Man' marking by Korean team so they
can win the match. Bindiya goes on to the field and with the help of Gunjan Lakhani
manages to beat South Korea. They are again matched with Australia for the final; this
time, they defeat the Hockeyroos for the World Cup. When the team returns home their
families treat them with greater respect and Khan, his good name restored, returns with
his mother to their ancestral home.

2. THE MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVES RECOGNIZED IN THE MOVIE

MAKING IMPOSSIBLE THE POSSIBLE

Take a look on one statement "JO HO NAHI SAKTA WOHI TO KRNA HAI" in the
movie. As winning world cup for Indian women's hockey is like impossible. But
Kabir khan takes it as a challenge and conveys his vision to the team members
though he is opposed by many but he is sure what he is doing.

TEAMING THE SUCCESS STORY

It could be observed that neither player nor the administrator were sure of
playing and winning the game but Kabir khan stimulated this zeal and developed
enthusiasm to win not as individual but as a team.

Great amount of attention has been paid to the players, the diversity in culture,
and their language and team dynamics. As it is very compulsory because, first the
diversity should be converted in the single identity. That Kabir khan tried by
saying "Say India" "We the Indian" rather than telling the name of state.

Espirit - de - corps.

Developing us feeling.

Priority to common goal.

LEADERSHIP STYLE

In the beginning he used the policy of negative motivation by firing and

suspending the players who were not giving the desired behaviour, than he tries
to come close to them to provide positive motivation and tries to develop
acceptance for him. It is true that a leader could be successful if he/she is
accepted by the followers.

Page | 5
TAKING THE CHALLENGE AS AN OPPORTUNITY

In the movie Kabir khan was selected as a coach of Indian women's hockey team
which has to play in world cup. Because it was already declared as impossible.
This he takes an opportunity to answer Indian viewers against the blames which
were made on him and with that he tried to prove that under his guidance things
could be possible.

DREAM BIG AND DEFINE THE GOAL

When Kabir Khan takes the challenge for word cup his total concern was on
world cup. It may have seemed unrealistic or even improbable, but then that's
what dreams are. Dreaming is about imagining a different future. In the case of
Kabir, he not only dreamt big but also put in place a strategy to make that a
reality. Another name for Dream is Vision. To make things happen the way we
want, we have to envision the future, and paint a picture in front of the others of
what we want to achieve.

BE DETERMINED IN FACE OF OPPOSITION

This comes many times but when the team was playing against Russia Kabir
know that Russians was playing roughly against every team and injured players
but still he was determined and made a strategy against team n result of this is
Indian team won the match. It is true that problem makes us strong and
determined.

SOMETIME WINNING IS EVERYTHING

IDENTIFY COMPETENCIES AND UTILIZING

In the movie Bindiya Nayer is only a player who know how to play against
Russian team that’s why Kabir meet him personally and motivate her to come
and play and she does the same.

Page | 6
LEADERSHIP IS ALL ABOUT SPELLING CLARITY IN CHOICES

Choices that clarify vision, values, expectation and optimize strength, resources
opportunities and challenge. In the movie we can observe that Mr. Kabir khan is
having the idea of all the mentioned issues.

COMMITMENT

It is the committed endeavour of committed team that brings fruition to the

powerful seeds of individual creativity. The essence of leadership with his
followers lies in the purpose that holds them together.

CREDIBILITY

A leader to effective has to demonstrate high levels of technical expertise. The

power drawn from expertise sources makes a leader much more acceptable to
his folks.

3. THE MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVES GIVING DETAILS OF THE
SCENES FROM THE MOVIE

BUILDING A TEAM

 Initially the group was a bunch of sixteen girls who had come with their own
agenda. However, the coach, Kabir Khan, realised that they wouldn’t succeed
with this attitude and so, he went on help them build a close-knit team. They
were not happy with his methods of training and soon made him their enemy
but this move was also strategized by him as the common enemy brought them
closer.

Page | 8
STRATEGY IS THE KEY TO SUCCEEDING

 The coach was aware of the fact that the hockey team couldn’t win all the
matches with a single strategy. To defeat South Korea, which was an aggressive
team, he devised a plan where the strongest player would fight to keep the route
clear for the forwards and he let the most experienced player, Bindiya play in a
very difficult match only because she was his trump card.
 An entrepreneur needs to learn that all situations aren’t the same and tweak his
strategy according to the situation.

Page | 9
MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM

 The coach says “JO NAHI HO SAKTA, WAHI TOH KARNA HAI” which shows that
he trusts his team completely to achieve what they think they can’t. Also, the
“SATTAR MINUTE” speech before the World Cup final was his way to motivate
his team and supercharge them to give their best on the field. He also motivated
an arrogant Bindiya to play a match against Russia because he knew that she was
the only one who could dodge a man-to-man marking.

Page | 10
LEADERSHIP ASPECTS

 Leadership is one of the main aspects of management and only an able leader is
able to drive his team towards success. The leader cannot always afford to be the
nice guy in every scenario and go on pleasing everyone. In the movie, the coach
was often stern with the girls if they made a mistake or broke a rule. This
ensured that they wouldn’t repeat their folly. However, he was also
understanding when it was required; he told Vidya that she could go back home
for a couple of days as she was under familial pressure.

Page | 11
4. EXPLANATION OF THE MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVES AND ITS
RELATION TO THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

MOTIVATION CONCEPTS
 Theory X – Bindia Niak
 Theory Y – Vidya Sharma
 Social Learning Theory
 Self Efficacy Theory
 Goal Setting Theory
 Intrinsic

When they played against men’s team, the negative comments given by
committee motivated them and raised their pulse and confidence.

 Extrinsic

The coach telling Preeti and Koumal about how they can make or ruin the
match, as he was trying to explain to play the match in the team instead of
thinking individually. The crucial 90 minutes just before the final match
motivated and helped them to get best out of them and created a “do or die”
situation.

 Motivation is linked with good working environment and high level of

compensation.
 The organization should must understand that type of work environment can
motive their employees and they can become loyal employees of the
organizations should develop such a compensation structure that fulfil the needs
of the employees in a best possible way and they don’t look around to meet their
needs.

DECISIONS MAKING
 Reluctant Decisions
 Rational Decisions
 Strategic Decisions
 Intuitive Decisions

Page | 12
GROUP BEHAVIOUR
 Prominence of 5 Stage Theory
 Group-think and Group Polarization
 Status hierarchy as per experience
 Need for Conformity
 Social Identity Theory

LEADERSHIP & TRAITS

 Leaders are visionary. The statement of “what is thought to be impossible is to be

done” i.e. “JO HO NAHI SAKTA WOHI TO KRNA HAI” shows the vision is the coach
and further taking that challenge and conveying that same vision to all the group
members shows the leadership and visionary trait of the coach, Khan.
 Leaders take the challenge as an opportunity. In the movie Kabir Khan’s first
challenge is to get into the job of the coach of Women’s Hockey Team and the
second challenge is to lead them to the World Cup victory and he takes such an
impossible challenge and converts it into an opportunity to answer Indian
viewers against the blames which were made against.
 Leaders are able to understand the situations and act accordingly. As in the
beginning Kabir Khan used the negative motivation by suspending the players.
However in the later part of the movie he has used the other motivational tools
to inspire the team and bring out the desired outcomes.
 Leaders should recognize individual strengths and weaknesses and assign tasks
accordingly for the fulfilment of organizational goals.
 The leader should be fair am impartial while dealing with team members of
organization. For an instance when Kabir Khan selects the new comer as a
captain rather than then selecting senior experienced player (Bindiya).
 Leaders are self motivated in organization, because they are experienced well.
The first and foremost of the motivation has to start from oneself. Only when one
is able to self motivate he/she can motivate the whole team he is leading towards
the goal.
 Production Oriented Leadership
 Transformational Leadership
 Charismatic Leadership & Authentic Leader & also a Mentor

5. SUMMARIZATION OF THE FINDINGS OF AT TWO RESEARCH
PAPERS BASED ON THE MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE/S
RECOGNIZED

 In the Research article Named : Chak De India Movie demonstrates the

values of Scrum Team & Scrum Master – A Case Study; done by Vandana
Gaikwad and Dr. Prasanna Joeg, they mentioned that about management
perspectives from the movie are many but also they mentioned the roles of one
person (called Scrum Master) who manages his life in different situations with
different roles.

CONCLUSION from the research article is seeing below:

The movie "Chak De India" demonstrates few of the people qualities of what a
Scrum Master plays for a Scrum team. In this paper we demonstrate how a
Scrum Master who is acting as Facilitator, a Coach, an Agile leader and a
Change Agent helps shape up a self-motivated & self-organized team. We
draw parallels from the scenes in the movie with the best practices prescribed by
the agile principles in the Scrum framework. Main objective of our study is to
better understand role of Scrum Master through the illustrations in the movie.
There are lot of things to be learnt from the movie to develop and understand
role of Scrum Master. Finally, it is strongly recommend that examples from this
paper should be included in the Agile training classes with help of video clips
from the movie.
 In another researched assignment done by Reshma on Behavioural
Communication & Relationship Management on the Movie, she conclude that
"Chak De" helps us understand concepts like human resource management,
strategy, motivation, determination, leadership skills and to be ambitious.
Movie also taught us how to work out best from the worst situation. We have our
chance till the last moment, so never to lose hope till the last moment. There are
lot of things to be learnt from the movie to develop our skills.

6. LEARNING FROM THE PROJECT

 The first motive of this project is to learn, how we analyze the movie from the
management point of view.
 Second is that about increase our accuracy in grammar and vocabulary in
business context.
 Next motive is that to increase the level of communication skills by writing and
also speaking means oral communication.

7. EXHIBITS- SNAPSHOTS OF THE SCENE FROM THE MOVIE/
DIALOGUES FROM THE PLAY USED FOR ANALYSIS

 Shah Rukh Khan's sattar minute monologue or the girls coming together as a
team after resolving their differences, the film was truly inspiring.

 One of the film's most memorable scenes was the one where the team is
introduced to their coach Kabir Khan for the first time. Each player introduces
herself followed by the state they represent and that's when Kabir Khan says,

"ISS TEAM KO SIRF VOH PLAYERS CHAHIYE JO PEHLE INDIA KE LIYE KHEL RAHE HAIN."

Page | 16
 “Har team me sirf ek hi gunda ho sakta hai, aur is team ka gundad main hoon!!”
said by Kabir Khan.
