INTRODUCTION
• System of springs, shock absorbers and linkages that
connects a vehicle to its wheels.
• Dual purpose – contributing to the car's handling and
braking.
• The basic functions :
i. Provide comfort to passengers.
ii. Maximize the friction between the tyres and the
road surface.
iii. Provide steering stability with good handling.

5
MAGIC BODY CONTROL
 World’s first suspension system with eyes.
 Like riding on a flying carpet.
 Magic body control suspension system is an
hydraulically controlled active suspension system.
 A stereo camera on the wind screen continually
monitor the road surface.

6
HISTORY
Introduced in the year 2007.
In a concept car by Mercedes Benz
– Mercedes Benz F700.
Mercedes Benz F700
Used laser sensors.
Equipped in 2013 in Mercedes
Benz S-CLASS.
Used stereo cameras instead of
laser sensors. Mercedes Benz S-CLASS

7
COMPONENTS

Sensors
Stereo camera
Electronic control unit
Reservoir
Hydraulic servo mechanism
Coil springs and shock absorbers

8
LAYOUT OF SUSPENSION SYSTEM

9
ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT
Electronic control unit is central element of the system.

Mainly used in engine controls to ensure optimum

performance.

Gets inputs from sensors.

Calculates the current driving status.

Selection of dampening characteristics.

Independent control of shock absorbers on each wheel.

10
STEREO CAMERA
Stereo camera act as the "eyes" of the MBC system.
Placed on the wind screen.
Continuously monitor the road surface 15 metres in
front and report to ECU
The stereo camera is a infrared camera.
This camera is also used in intelligent drive system
and parking assistance.
11
RESERVOIR
 Used to store oil.
 Supplies the oil to the servomechanism as per the command
of ECU.

Reservoir

12
SENSORS
 The sensors continually monitor body movement and
vehicle level and supply the controller with new data
every ten milliseconds.
 Four level sensors, one at each wheel measure the ride
level of the vehicle.
 Three acceleration sensors used : longitudinal, lateral,
and vertical acceleration sensors .

13
SENSORS Contd..

Longitudinal acceleration sensor reports acceleration and

deceleration.
Lateral acceleration sensor detects transverse or side-to-
side movements.
Vertical Acceleration Sensors detect lifting motion and
pitch and roll of the body.

14
HYDRAULIC SERVO MECHANISM
It is a mechanism that uses automatic feedback and
hydraulics to correct the performance of a machine.
ECU directs the hydraulic servomechanisms on how to
correct the car's positioning.
Consist of a valve called as electrohydraulic servo
valve (EHSV)
Electrically operated valve that controls how hydraulic fluid
is sent to an actuator.
Controls powerful cylinders with very small electric signal.
15
COIL SPRINGS & SHOCK ABSORBERS

Coil spring is the most common type of spring found

on modern vehicles.

The suspension spring's task is to absorb the vibration

and carry the wheels back to a condition of
equilibrium.
Low cost and compact size.

16
WORKING
The stereo camera scan the road surface and provide
corresponding signals to the ECU.
The system scans the road surface up to 15 meters ahead of
the vehicle with an accuracy of up to 3mm.
Active up to 130 km/h (81 mph), and it adjusts the shock
damping at each wheel to account for imperfections in the
road.
 ECU determines the amount of pressure to be built in servo
mechanism according to various signals from sensors.
17
 The sensors and hydraulic servo mechanism generates forces
to counteract the effects of the road surface.
 By these combination the suspension take action before the
wheels reach them.

Working of magic body control

18
DRIVING MODES
COMFORT MODE :
i. Sensitive response and soft damping
characteristics.
ii. The suspension level is automatically adjusted
depending on the road speed.
iii.Vehicle is lowered by ten millimetres at speeds
over 120 km/h .

19
SPORTS MODE:

 Shock absorbers have more stiffer response than

comfort mode.
 Vehicle is lowered by10 millimetres at speeds below
80km/h.
 Rolling action is effectively reduced.
 Provide more sporty performance at corners.

20
COMPARISON OF PITCHING

Reduced pitching
21
COMPARISON OF ROLLING

Reduced rolling
22
MERITS
Stability at all time.
High level of ride comfort.
Minimizing uncomfortable body movements.
Successful elimination of roll and pitch.
Added safety and security.
Keeps tyres pressed to the ground.
Increases life of the vehicle.

23
DEMERITS
High initial cost.
Malfunctioning can lead to big collapse.
Require super quick micro-computers.

24
CONCLUSION

 Mercedes-Benz created a revolutionary change in

suspension system.
 Development of magic body control suspension
system has made it possible the dream of vehicle with
optimum comfort.
 Reduced the rolling and pitching tendency of vehicle
in various situations.
