The cardiovascular block will present an integrated case-based view of the anatomy,
histology, physiology, and cell biology of the cardiovascular system. This block will emphasize
electrophysiology of the heart, biochemistry of cardiac muscle, hemodynamics of the circulation,
structure/function of smooth muscle, microcirculation, and the overall regulation and control of the
cardiovascular system. State-of-the-art information on gene therapeutic approaches to
cardiovascular disease will be presented.
The Cardiovascular Block is designed to provide an integrated basic and clinical scientific
understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and treatment of major cardiovascular diseases.
The block begins with a mini-block of material focused on the pharmacology of the autonomic
nervous system that serves as an introduction to the cardiovascular material.
All topics include a discussion of treatment modalities, including a complete review of
pharmacologic interventions as well as other medical and/or surgical interventions. In addition, a
series of cardiovascular pathology and histopathology laboratories are included in the
Cardiovascular Block.

Description:
The Cardiovascular Block provides a basic overview of an integrated and clinical scientific
understanding of the underlying pathophysiology processes and treatment of major cardiovascular
diseases, including case representation. The purpose of the cardiovascular block is for the student to be
able to learn about the development of the heart and the consequences of mal development, normal
physiology of the heart, regulation of blood vessels and the consequences of abnormal regulation,
determine pathophysiology of ischemic heart disease, assess cardiac electrical function and
dysfunction, identify and define clinical approach and management of heart failure.

I. Attendance requirements
Problem Based learning is an important and integral component of the UPH curriculum. This
instructional method emphasizes cooperative behavior and small group learning which for many
students, is a new way of learning. Consequently for groups to function successfully, regular full
attendance at tutorials is essential.
Attendance expectations as requirements and prerequisites to sit the examinations:
a. 100% for PBL tutorials and Clinical Skills sessions.
b. 70 % for all other activities.
c. Exemptions permitted with Doctor’s certificate, event of Family crisis, disaster or
extraordinary reason with prior permission from tutor. Further criteria according to UPH
criteria for exemption.
2. Knowledge Assessment
Student’s applied knowledge will be assessed at the end of each block using:
a. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
b. Objective Structure Practical Examination (OSPE)
Standard setting
All assessment process such as MCQ, OSPE, OSCE, Extended matching are subjected to a
rigorous standard setting process. Methods such as Angoff, modified Angoff and Hofstee will be
used.
3. Standardization of Scores:
Passing grade at UPH is 60.00% (C) and will be determined through recognized Standards
Setting processes. Relationship to the Grading system and GPA is as indicated in the table.
