Priming
Apply RHEOMIX 121 to the dry substrate by
roller, brush, low pressure spray or squeegee.
On very porous or absorbent substrates, 2 coats
may be required to effectively seal the substrate.
Take care to avoid ponding of the primer. Allow
to fully dry before application of MASTERTOpe
528.
Mixing
Mechanical mixing is required for MASTERTOpe
528. For small areas, a slow speed stirrer of not
more than 600 rpm fitted with a helical paddle, Is
suitable. Mixing time is 3 minutes.
Place the required quantity of water into the
mixing vessel. Whilst mixing, slowly add the
powder to the water within 2 minutes then mix
for a further 1 minute. Allow mixed
MASTERTOpe 528 to stand for 3 minutes and
then remix prior to application. Use chilled water
at high temperatures for longer application time.
For improved efficiency and continuous
production of MASTERTOpe 528, it Is
recommended to use at least two mixing
buckets.
For larger jobs, the use of a mechanical
mixer/pump unit is recommended. Refer to your
local BASF Construction Chemicals Technical
Representative for suitable machines.
Method of use
Pour mixture over substrate or pump through a
suitable pump to desired thickness.
Whether pouring from a mixing vessel or using a
mechanical mixer with an application hose, the
discharge point should be approximately 200mm
from the floor to prevent splashing and air
entrapment.

Progress should be steady and even.
Application should take place continuously Into
the preceding wet material to ensure even
thickness and flow. Do not make new edges and
'fill in' the middle.
The fresh wet topping can be rolled immediately
with a suitable long spiked roller to release all air
retained within the underlayment. Do not roll
material that has been applied for more than 2-3
minutes.
Maximum thickness should be 20mm. If greater
thickness Is required MASTERTOpe 528 shall
be mixed with MASTERTOpe SRA NO. 3 at a
ratio of 1:1 by weight. This can be applied upto
a thickness of 50mm.
Curing
MASTERTOP® 528 is self-curlng, but as with all
cementltious products in hot weather, take
adequate measures to protect It from exposure
to direct sunlight and hot winds. DO NOT use
water spray or liquid membrane curing
compounds as these may affect the surface
texture or prevent bonding of subsequent
adhesives used with floor coverings.
Coverage
A 25kg bag of MASTERTOpe 528 mixed with
5.5 Iitres of water will yield 15.2 Iitres of mixed
product.
A 25kg bag of MASTERTOP® 528 with 25kg of
MASTERTOpe SRA NO. 3 and 5.5 litres of
water will yield 24 Iltres of mixed product.

Cleaning
Tools should be cleaned with water before the
material hardens. Hardened material will need to
be mechanically removed.
Shelf life
MASTERTO~ 528 can be stored in tightly
sealed original bags for 6 months if kept dry and
at a moderate temperature.

Precautions
MASTERTO~ 528 is not toxic, but as with other
products containing cement it has an alkaline
nature and thus can be Irritating to skin and
eyes. Wear simple dust masks and gloves when
handling. Keep out of reach of children. Wash off
splashes of material with clean water. If irritation
persists, seek medical advice.

Method statement (Hand Application) - Mastertop 528

THIS METHOD STATEMENT COVERS THE SURFACE PREPARATION, MIXING & HAND APPUCATION
OF MASTERTOP 528, A SINGLE COMPONENT, SELF SMOOTHING, FAST SETTING, CEMENT BASED
FLOOR UNDERLAYMENT. (THICKNESS 2mm - 30mm).

APPLICATION METHOD

1. SUBSTRATE PREPARATION:
1.1. Identify the area to be treated with the MASTERTOP 528.
1.2. Repairs to the floor substrates Qf required) should be carried out before the application of the
MASTERTOP 528.
1.3. Repairs at joints (If present) should be carried out as per the BASF Joint Repair Procedure.
1.4. The surface must be mechanically prepared to remove laitance or contaminants such as oil,
grease, adhesives or resin coatings /compounds.
1.5. This is best achieved by abrasive tools such as diamond grinders for small areas or captive shot
blasting for larger areas
1.6. Vacuum the surface prepared area to remove dust and other debris.

2. SEALING I PRIMING
2.1. Pre-wet floor with clean water and completely remove any standing water.
2.2. Roller apply the first seal coat of RHEOMIX 121 (at a rate of 0.25 Itr/m2), to the pre-wet floor,
mixed at a ratio of 1:4 with water, to seal to the concrete surface.
2.3. NB: Do not allow the material to "pond" and once applied allow to surface dry.
2.4. Roller apply the second sealer coat of RHEOMIX 121 (at a rate of O.15Itr/m2) mixed at a ratio of
1:3 with water.
2.5. NB: Do not allow the material to "pond" and once applied allow to surface dry.

3. MIXING I APPUCATION
3.1. Install temporary barrier strips to prevent the compound from overflowing into perimeter joints or
drains and close any windows and doors to ensure a draught free environment. In warm or hot
weather ensure cool water is available for mixing. Store the bags of MASTERTOP 528 in a cool
dry area.

3.2 Once the primer / sealer coat is dry, the MASTERTOP 528 can be mixed and applied as per the
table below:

3.3. Place the required amount of mixing (chilled/potable) water (5.5 litres) into a suitable container.
Using a suitable slow speed (350 - 500 rpm) drill fitted with a mixing paddle, start mixing while
slowly adding the powder within 2 minutes and then mix for another 1 minute.

Allow the mixed MASTERTOP 528 material to stand for another 3 minutes and then remix for I
minute prior to application.
3.4. NB: A minimum of 2 mixing containers is required and a spare mixing drill should also be
available in case of breakdown.
3.5. Once mixed, apply the MASTERTOP 528 to the prepared sealed substrate floor by pouring out to
the required thickness by notched trowel/notched surface scraper or pin screed.
(2mm - 30mm maximum)
3.6. Spike roller the applied material to assist air release and to minimize pinholes.
3.7. Allow to dry naturally (no curing is required), but at all times protect from drying through exposure
to surface winds and sunlight.
3.8. Final floor flnish can be applied over MASTERTOP 528 when it can be walked on. This time is
dependent on thickness, substrate and ambient temperatures but generally should be around 6-8
hours.
N.B. MASTERTOP 528 Is not designed for external / semi-external applications and it is not
chemically resistant and should not be left in prolonged contact with water or any liquid.
3.9. Do not apply MASTERTOP 528 at substrate temperatures below 5°C.
3.10. In conditions of low humidity; high ambient temperatures; direct sunlight or draught, the
installation must be shaded or sheltered and the surface covered as soon as it is firm enough to
walk on to prevent it drying to fast.
3.11. Sudden temperature changes during application must be avoided.
