2. Write your answer to each question in the space provided in this book.
3. Answer all the questions with a blue or black ballpoint or ink pen. Do not use red ink.
Use a pencil only for drawing.
4. If you use extra sheets of paper, be sure to write clearly the question number(s) being answered
and to tie each sheet securely in this book in the appropriate places.
5. You may use a calculator, provided it is silent, battery-operated and non-programmable.
6. Working should be shown in questions involving calculations and final answers are to be
expressed in two decimal places.
7. There are eight questions altogether in this paper. All the questions are compulsory and each
one is worth five marks.
8. Spend approximately seven minutes on each question.

QUESTION 1

(a) Explain why each of the following is considered as a good laboratory practice.

(i) Always add acid to water with constant stirring.

QUESTION 2

(a) A group of Year 13 students investigated the effect of intermolecular forces on


different liquids. They took equal volumes of water and cyclohexane in two
different test tubes and solidified them. The diagram below shows the result
obtained after warming the two test tubes in a water bath.

(a) One of the important properties of transition metals is their ability to form coloured
compounds.

QUESTION 6

Esters are organic compounds with a sweet fruity smell. They can be hydrolysed under
an alkaline medium. The following extract shows the hydrolysis of methyl salicylate.

Step 1 Place 2 ml of methyl salicylate in a round bottomed distillation flask.

Step 2 Add 25 ml of sodium hydroxide and some ____________.

Step 3 Reflux the mixture gently for about 30 minutes, at which time any oily
drops of the ester should have disappeared.

Step 4 Distil the mixture slowly to collect about 1ml of distillate and retain this

(a) The dissociation constant of 0.1 molL–1 acetic acid (CH3COOH) was determined
by a group of students using a pH meter. The pH was found to be 3.4.
