Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Melinda Reed
Technology Coach, Oakland Middle School
Subject/Course: Math Date: N/A
Grade Level: 7th Time: N/A
Topic: Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers Length of Period: 45 minutes
Standards: 7.NS.A.2c Demonstrate knowledge of multiplying and dividing rational
numbers, specifically fractions.
Success Criteria:  Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the rules of
multiplying and dividing fractions as they solve problems and rotate
through stations.
 Students will analyze sample work to determine who solved a
problem correctly.
 Students will justify the answer, which problem is solved correctly,
what was the mistake, and how do you solve the problem.
 Students will create a word problem and justify that answer is
correct.
Grouping of Review of the bell ringer and instructions for station work will be presented
Students: whole group. Review of the previous days exit slip will occur in a mix of
small group discussion and whole group. Students will be placed in groups
of 3 or 4 to complete the station work.
Accommodations  Differentiated instruction is used to meet the needs of various
for Individual learning styles; auditory (spoken instruction, discussion with other
Student Needs: students), visual (PowerPoint and printed materials). kinesthetic
(rotating through the stations and sorting activity).
 Extension of the lesson by asking students to create their own
equivalent expression and justify why it is equivalent.
Materials and  Teacher Computer
Technology  Projector
 PowerPoint
 Laptops/desktops/student personal devices
 Pencil and Math Folder/Paper
 Dry Erase Boards and Markers
 Graphic Organizers
 ‘Sample Student Work’
 Cards for Matching Expressions Activity
 Exit Slip

Opening, Rotations, Wrap Up

Whole Group Opening The previous day’s exit ticket included two questions: “What is one
(Introduction) thing you have learned?” and “What is one question you still have?”
For bell work, the teacher will present statements from various
student responses to the question “What is one thing you have
learned?” Statements chosen will reflect incorrect or incomplete
understanding, and a group discussion will begin to figure out how to
‘correct’ or ‘complete’ the statements. Then, the teacher will present
various student responses to the question “What is one question you
still have?” TLW will be asked to answer the questions.
Lesson Procedures:  TTW begin the lesson with a class discussion of the bell work
and the objective (learning intention and success criteria)
 TTW guide a discussion regarding student responses to the
previous day’s exit ticket questions “What is one thing you
have learned?” and “What is one question you still have?”.
 TTW introduce the three stations, and give directions
 The students will work with their tablemates, as the teacher
rotates the activity.

Stations:

1. Students will analyze ‘sample student work’ to determine who

correctly simplified various expressions and justify who solved them
correctly and who didn’t. Early finishers will create their own real
word application problems for their peers to analyze and solve.
Individual dry erase boards and markers will be provided for this
activity.

2. Students will sort various expressions involving multiplying and

dividing rational numbers, matching the product/quotient as less than
one, greater than one or neither on a graphic organizer. With their
group, they will check their work. Early finishers will extend their
thinking by creating their own equivalent expression for each original
problem, and justifying their new expression is equivalent to the
original. Exceptional equivalent expressions may be presented in class
the following day. Paper and pencil will be used for this activity.

3. Students will complete a PlayPosit activity based on the video

found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_ATRawpm4c .

 TTW maintain the timer for student rotations through the two
stations, and facilitate student learning as they work through
the stations.
 TTW guide discussion concluding the lesson.
 TTW reflect on their own learning and understanding of the
standard and ‘level’ themselves.
 TLW complete an exit ticket before leaving class.

Whole Group Close The teacher will guide a class review of the objective and reflect on
(Reflect) their understanding of our objective and ‘level’ themselves. The class
will finish with students completing an exit slip reflecting on their
work in stations.
Assessment Plan Based  Students will complete the bell work and the teacher will
on Objectives: assess understanding and mastery during review of the bell
work.
 The teacher will question the students from the previous days
exit ticket as well as throughout the lesson to assess
understanding and mastery.
 Students will work with their group in various stations to
assess student work, and sort expressions.
 Students will reflect on their own understanding of the
objective and ‘level’ themselves, complete an exit ticket
answering questions and reflecting on their work in the
stations.
