SPsc (single crochet spoke stitch) – the spoke stitch is almost the same as single
crochet but placed one round below the working round (if not otherwise stated in the
pattern)and drawn up to the height of a working round. Insert a hook in indicated st,
draw up a loop to the height of the stitches at a working rnd, yo, pull through both lps on
hook. Skip the sc of current rnd which is located behind a SPsc just made.

Important notes___________________________________

1. Reading the pattern. This pattern uses some elements from overlay crochet
technique. The whole idea of an overlay crochet is to create a base, background with

simple stitches (Tatsiana
(single Kupryianchyk).
crochet stitches Copyright
are used most often), and at the2014. All rights
same time r
add long, complex stitches above. The only important (and basic) thing about overlay
crochet is that the stitches of the background are always crocheted in back loops only
(if not otherwise is stated in the pattern) while the overlay stitches are added
(“anchored”) in the front loops of stitches of underlying rounds/rows.
This pattern contains written instructions and a lot of pictures showing where the
new yarn should be attached and to which sts the overlaid stitches should be added
(these sts (front loops) are marked by arrows). I would strongly recommend to use
both kinds of instructions. It will be easier to read and understand the written
instructions after looking at the pictures.
2. Attaching new yarn. This mandala is crocheted in rounds with color changes on
every round (if nothing else is stated in the pattern). To avoid unstable knots and
follow the stitch count it is very important to understand how new yarn should be
attached. It is attached by simple pulling a loop of new color in indicated st and
making a ch, which will count as the first st of the round (if not otherwise stated in
the pattern).
3. Crochet in back loops. As already mentioned stitches (sc) of a background are
always crocheted in back loops only (if not otherwise is stated in the pattern) while
the overlaid long stitches are added (“anchored”) in the front loops of sts of previous
rounds. If you crochet the background sts through the FL you won’t get any chance
of placing long stitches.
4. Finishing rounds (NJ). The rounds are finished with a needle join (NJ) in the
first st of the round (if not otherwise stated in the pattern). I use a hook instead of a
needle to join, it saves a lot of time. (I also use a hook to weave in all yarn tails).

2
a) Fasten yarn off leaving an approx. 5 cm long tail. Insert hook under “V”
(both loops) of the indicated st from the back to front, yo the yarn tail and
pull it through lps. (Pic. 1)
b) Insert hook under BL of the last stitch of the last rnd from back to front, yo
the yarn tail and pull it through BL. (Pic. 2)
If you use this technique, you give the chain stitch at the beginning of the round
its “V”. (Pic. 3) Weave in the end and clip it close to the surface of the piece.
I prefer NJ on every rnd (even if there is no color change) because it makes join
sections invisible. But you can of course join in a way you like (for example with a
slst), just be aware of following stitch count.

5. Skipping sts. Overlaid stitches “hide” the stitches of background and this is the
reason, why sc of the working round should be skipped. But please note that the

number of skipped AllItrights r
helps to increase the quantity of sts on each round without making increases. You
should be very attentive while following the instructions. A stitch count is included at
the end of instructions for every round to help you avoid mistakes.
6. Inserting hook. It might be tricky to understand how the hook should be inserted
while adding (“anchoring”) overlaid stitches. When the overlaid stitch is anchored in
the front loop of the st of some underlying rnd, then the hook is inserted from
bottom to top.
7. Crochet on right side. This pattern is written for right-handed people And all
rounds are worked on the right side.

TIPS___________________________________________
 If you choose to crochet this mandala in different colors than offered in this
pattern, it would be very helpful if you make a color key before you start to
work, and mark your own colors on every round in the pattern. Though the
instructions are written in such a way that you don’t need to refer to a certain
color, it is much easier to read the pattern with colors already marked.

 You can choose any yarn for this pattern. But please be aware that yarn’s
weight will influence the size of finished mandala. You can change the colors
of this pattern according to your taste. You can achieve great effects and every
mandala will look different.

Enjoy this pattern!

Decorate your mini mandala with surface slst

To work surface slst, insert your hook from front to back between two sts of 4th rnd with
yarn of the same color as you used for rnd 7, yo, draw up a lp. Then again insert hook
from front to back in a spot where you want to make a slst (in our case – after the post of
the next st on the same rnd), yo, draw yarn up. Now you have two lps on a hook. Pull
second lp through the first one. Repeat for every st till the end of the rnd. Don’t pull the
stitches too tight, otherwise it will warp your work!
In the end of the rnd cut the thread, pull a tail to the wrong side and fasten off.

Congratulations! Your mini mandala is finished!
