SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING AND DESIGN

BACHELOR OF QUANTITY SURVEYING (HONOURS)

Project Management (MGT 60704)

Group Project (maximum 7 members)

Total percentage: 30%

Deadline: 26th Nov 2018

Presentation: 26th Nov 2018

Background
The proposed site for this study is at Pulau Langkawi. Langkawi is an archipelago made up
of 99 islands on Malaysia’s west coast. Surrounded by turquoise sea, the interior of the main
island is a mixture of picturesque paddy fields and jungle-clad hills.

The proposed resort development site features crystal clear seawater, white beaches and an
untouched tropical jungle. Hence it is an appropriate site for student to study environment
protection and environment preservation before, during and after the resort development
process.

Alternative Site
For students who can’t make it to the trip, the alternative site will be at Pulau Ketam. Pulau
Ketam, literally translated, means "crab island". It is a small island located off the coast of
Klang. The island is easily accessible from the Port Klang jetty by ferry. The "floating
houses" that come to view as visitors approach the island is a sight to awe any city slickers.
Perching casually on long wooden stilts, these dwellings are suspended about one to ten (1-
10) meters above sea level.

Methodology
In this study trip, students are required to observe, record and analyze the island. From the
point of view of an investor who intent to build a resort, students should prepare a business
proposal which includes (but not limited to) the following items:

a. Project Background
b. Project Proposed Design
c. Project Time Management
d. Project Cost Estimation
e. Project Quality Management
f. Project Risk Management
g. Project Procurement Management
h. Project Environment Protection Management
i. Project Summary
Expected Outcomes

At the end of this study trip, the students will produce the following:
a) A written report on the stated items above.
b) A presentation of the project.

The students and the lecturers will experience the following impact:

a) As an on-site study, students will expose themselves to the project site for
observation. More insight will be installed to the students compare to an on-the-paper
assignment.
b) As a role-play exercise, students will gain perception on the role and responsibilities
of an investor.
c) Students will be trained to research and propose constructive suggestion for project
improvement.
