Idioms – a phrase that means something different from the
individual words in it
Alliteration – same beginning sound
 Onomatopoeia – words that imitate real sounds
Personification – give human qualities to non-human things
Hyperbole – extreme exaggeration to make a point

(10 minutes) Hand out worksheet and have students work on it. They may work
on it with a partner.

Have students hand in worksheet. Due Thursday if they have not

(25 minutes) Read chapters 27 – 32 silently.

 Idioms – a phrase that means something different from the

 Simile – compare two things using “like” or “as” (example: you shine

 Metaphor – compare two things without using “like” or “as”
(example: life is a highway)
 Alliteration – same beginning sound (example: Sally sold seashells by
the seashore)
 Onomatopoeia – words that imitate real sounds (example: BAM!)
 Personification – give human qualities to non-human things
(example: the leaves dance in the wind)
 Hyperbole – extreme exaggeration to make a point (example: I told
you a million times)
