Introduction

Smarter management builds on the notion that sensor technology can be used to better
inform daily work practices. At the city scale, combining standard receptacles with sensor
technology creates an opportunity -- inform receptacle data in real-time. Thus, deploying a
network of smart receptacles carries the potential to re-configure out-dated work practices,
measure performance, and optimize operational efficiencies.

A Starting Point For Smarter Management

Managing waste receptacles is a labor intensive practice that is governed by schedules, calendars,
and fixed routes. Operationally, these methods are inefficient, and exhaust available resources.
However, with access to relevant data in real-time, operators can make better informed decisions,
improve quality of service, and transform outdated work practices.

Demand Response, and Anomalies!

Under ordinary circumstances you may find anomalies, and being able to detect, map, and inform
those instances in real-time creates opportunity, such as: reducing costs, improving services, and
increasing overall accountability. Take for example Figure 1 over-performance with anomaly; by
ignoring the empty receptacle, there is an immediate 25% increase in efficiency that can be
reallocated or optimized. Oppositely, Figure 3 an example of under-performance with anomaly; here,
deploying a schedule or routine based approach may result in a 75% decrease in effeciency. Now
consider, at the city-scale, that real-time data could be used inform overall decision making, and
allow managers to create new strategies to reclaim efforts.

Round Trip Data
The data that needs to travel on-site to cloud can be understood in two datasets: container I.D.
and address. By pairing these two units, all measured weight will automatically be associated to
the appropriate person and their usage can be monitored over time.
