Lesson Idea Name: Mastering Adding and Subtracting
Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE2.OA.2: Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By
the end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Technology Standard Addressed: Standard 1: Empowered Learner

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
• Available on all devices
• Shows students the correct answer after answering
• Can be played individually or as a team
• Gives students a chance to express and demonstrate what they know

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the Kahoot! activity students will have already learned and practiced all of their addition and
subtraction facts for two one-digit numbers throughout the year. This game will be introduced at the point
that all students should know these facts. The teacher will then introduce Kahoot if it has not yet been used.
The students will then get their devices out and finally, they will log in using the class code and wait patiently
until everyone is logged in and ready.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Student Response and Assessment Tools
During the activity, all students will be on their own device. In this case, the device being used will be the
class laptops or tablets, whichever is available. The teacher will have the Kahoot! activity on the board for all
students to see and will also read the question and the answer choices off to the students. The students will
put in their answer choices on their device. Once they put in their answer, they will be able to see if they got
it right or wrong. For each question that they get correct they will gain points, so this game will be used as a
class competition, but students do not have to use their real name for the activity. This activity will last about
20 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10): N/A

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to the questions and display correct
response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will preselect correct answers because for this activity it is required. Students will be able to see the correct
answer once everyone has answered the question.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity I will quickly look at the data as students are putting their device away. If there are any
problems that were commonly missed for students we will go over those. However, this activity is fast-paced
so there will always be a few accidental errors. Once we go over any missed problems, if needed, we will
move on to another lesson.
How will the data be used?
As a result of this activity, I will be able to see which problems seemed to be more difficult for students based
on the data that Kahoot! gives me at the end of the game. I will use this data to determine if students need
more practice with two one-digit addition and subtraction. problems. There will be no grade for this activity,
this will just be a fun game for students and a way for me to test their knowledge. The only data that will be
shared with the class are the problems, if any, that was missed most frequently by the class. Before this game
is played, student progress will have already been monitored in other ways that are more reliable which will
tell me if I need to differentiate instruction for any students. This game is just a fun way to wrap up one-digit
addition and subtraction.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
For this activity, I am working with students on knowing one-digit addition and subtraction problems from
memory since this game is fast-paced. In previous activities, students have had more time to think about the
answer, but for this activity students only have about 20 seconds to get the answer to each problem. This will
help me determine if students know these problems.

Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea, I feel like students will enjoy it and they will be able to see for themselves
what they know. I think this could have also been used as an introductory activity since I am not taking any

official data with students’ names, but I also think this is a fun way for students to wrap up a lesson and
quickly test their knowledge of the content.
