CAYLIE BUHAGIAR

Caylie Buhagair, a recent hight school graduate, grips her backpack tight. She

has experienced 12 of these already but this was the most exciting and the most gut-

wrenching. She was attending her first day at California State University, Fullerton. On

August 25 2014, Caylie Buhagiar became the first member in her family to attend a four-

year university to pursue a Bachelor's degree. Slowly, her anxiety became excitement. “I

kept thinking to myself that this is where my future starts. I need to make my family

proud.”

Going to college is something that she has prepared for her whole life through

hard work. From dance lessons and starting baseball when she was 5 to ASB and

Commissioner of Communications in high school, she has been dedicated to being

successful. She also did travel ball until her sophomore year of high school and was

Commissioner of Homeroom. As if that wasn’t enough, she got her first job when she

was 16. “My parents raised me to work hard, to be involved in my community, and get

involved in extracurricular activities at school,” says Caylie. All this hard work didn’t go

unnoticed. With over 1,200 students in her graduating class, she was personally

chosen by the Vice President of her high school to receive a four-year scholarship. “It

was a very proud moment for me,” explains Cayie, “the school administration, my

friends, and my family, recognized the hard work I had been putting in and motivated

me to be successful in life.” The scholarship served as another motivation for her to

successful. “I want to prove that I did deserve the scholarship.”

As a child, she spent a lot of time in hospitals because of asthma and severe

allergies. She says, “Because the medical field has been a big part of my life, I would

love to work in a hospital. However, anytime I see blood I pass out, so I knew that being

a nurse or doctor wasn't for me.” These regular trips to the hospital as a child inspired

her to do public relations for a hospital. “Communication is a vital aspect to society

especially when it comes to health, so I would love to help a hospital by providing

information to patients, staff [and] media.”

“I love talking to others and just getting to learn about them.” Her passion to help

others and to learn about communication is what drives her everyday at school. College

has its ups and downsAs the first child in her family to attend a four-year university, she

is making her family proud.
