In tihis globalization era, English is a language that often used as

communication tool among people in many countries, because it is an international

language. Although in Indonesia English is as foreign language, but the most people

want to learn it. In learning english there are four skills that have to be mastered such

as listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Therefore learning english will never be

successful without learning and understanding vocabulary. According to Hirai (2010,

p. 45) “Without knowing the vocabulary of a language, higher level language use

(grammar, syntax, expository writing) is difficult, if not impossible”. Having good

knowledge of vocabulary can support students to English mastery, because through

vocabulary students can express their feeling, emotion, ideas and desire.

In teaching English, vocabulary is an important element of language. It is an

important aspect at mastery all skill in learning and teaching English. According to

Cameron (2001, p. 75) “Vocabulary teaching can be focused to help learners build up

a knowledge of words in ways that will enable them to use the language efficiently

and successfully”. For instance in listening, students’ vocabulary mastery influencing

their understanding toward teachers’ speech, native speaker,and other speech. It is

also can affect in speaking, students’s vocabulary should be clear to deliver and catch

a message well. Meanwhile, in reading,students’ vocabulary affect their ability to

ward understanding on text, interpreted words in text reading. Furthermore dealing

with writing, students’ vocabulary can affect their imagination toward creativity of

writing skill, in order the reader can understand what purpose of the writer.
According to Nation (2002, p. 12) said “Vocabulary seem to suggest that second

language learners need to know very large numbers of words”. It means students have

to mastering vocabulary in learning English well. Especially in junior high school,

SMP Yaspita, all of the students have to mastering vocabulary.
